    Notes:

He went by Donald, his middle name.

His widow was Evelyn according to the Oregon death index.

In the 1920 census, he was a yard clerk for a railroad.

In the 1930 census, he was no longer living with his mother and step-father. In that census, he is living with his dead wife’s brother, Edward Haines, in a rented house on South Riverside in Klamath Falls. He is a widower and works as a salesman for a railroad. No children are living with him. Collette and Colleen are shown as “boarders” in the household of Gertrude and Phil Schroeder in Klamath Falls.

The city directories indicate that he lived in Klamath Falls when he was married to Myrtle. He was a traveling agent for the Great Northern Railroad. (A 1932 article in The Oregonian agrees with this.) He was with Evelyn in the 1949 directory, he was still with Myrtle in the 1938 directory.

A somewhat odd article about him appeared in The Klamath News, 27 Aug 1938, under the heading of Klamath Railroaders, Salesman:

“The gentleman above is L. D. Boyle, traveling freight agent for the Great Northern. Boyle’s favorite food is lamb. He eats a lamb chop for the first course, another for the main part of the dinner, and for dessert he eats still another chop. He doesn’t care for those sweet desserts and always takes an extra piece of meat instead.

“Leo Donald Boyle was born at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, May 12, 1901. At least that’s what jis parents say. He just can’t seem to remember much about it himself. When Don was 6 years old his family moved to Portland, Oregon, and the boy attended school there.

“In his fifteenth year while he was still going to high school Don decided that he was tired of asking his father for a dime all the time. He was going to make his own money. So he got a job with the SPS railway in the operating department, going to school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and working from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m.

“After his graduation Boyle still worked for the SPS, keeping this job until 1925. Then he was employed by the Great Northern railway in the traffice department in Portland. In September, 1927, Don was transferred to Klamath Falls. That was before the line had yet operated here.

“But Boyle opened offices in the Slater building here with C. N. Christopherson and prepared for the building of the Great Northern railway into Klamath Falls.

“In 1935, Boyle, who then had two children and whose wife had died in 1929, decided that he wasn’t a very good mother to his two sons so on January 2 of that year he marrried Miss Myrtle Bye, a school teacher here.

“The next year Don was promoted to traveling freight agent, which position he has held since. The duties of a traveling freight agent are practically the same as that of a traveling salesman. Boyle solicits for livestock and general shipments from central Oregon. His territory is quite a large one, from Bieber, California, to The Dalles in Oregon and Don is traveling almost all the time.

“The Boyles have three children, Robert 15, Floyd, 13, and Patsy Mae, 5. The family lives on Pacific Terrace.

“Don likes railroading, hunting, and fishing. He says he isn’t home often enough to have any favorite pastime around the house but according to his wife he is a wonderful “fixer.” He does all the kalsomining, painting, and furniture repair around the house.

“Boyle has a reddish complexion (his hair used to be red but it turned brown with hard work, he claims), is bery energetic and has a million-dollar disposition. He his always happy and carefree and never gets really angry.”

In the 1940 census, Leo, Myrtle, Robert, Floyd, and Patsy lived at 10305 Skidmore in Parkrose in Oregon. Leo had four years of high school, Myrtle had four years of college. Five years earlier, everyone in the family had lived in Klamath Falls. Leo was a business manager for a (something) Line.

He registered for the draft on 15 Feb 1942 in Portland. He was described as 5 ft 9 in tall and weighing 150 lbs. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. The little finger on his left hand had a bent end. He and Myrtle lived at 39th and Alberta Court in Portland. He was employed by the S.P. and S. Railroad at its car office at 11th and Hoyt in Portland.

In the record of his marriage to Evelyn in 1943, he listed it as his third marriage. His father was born in Ireland and had been employed as a butcher. His mother was born in Canada.

In the 1950 census, he and Evelyn and their blended family (Robert Bye, Mary Lou Bye, and Michael Boyle) live in Klamath Falls. He is a tallyman for a wholesale lumber manufacturing facility. His address is 4780 Peck Drive.

In the 1955 Klamath Falls city directory, he and Evelyn and Evelyn’s children from her previous marriage lived at 4680 Peck Drive. Leo, and his step-son Robert, worked for Klamath Basin Pine Mills.

Graduated from Parkrose High School in Portland, Oregon. Patricia was “a hospice RN who still works part time in Sandy, Oregon.”

    She had seven children.

Pat Brown passed away peacefully the morning of November 30, 2022 in Sandy, Oregon. Family and friends had just celebrated her 90th birthday in October.

Pat was born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, to parents Leo (Don) and Myrtle Boyle, joining brothers Robert (Bob) and Floyd. The Boyle family moved to Portland in 1940 and Pat graduated from Parkrose High School ten years later. A high school cheerleader, Pat was popular and was voted Homecoming Queen.

Pat met Robert (Bob) Taylor in 1949, marrying in 1951. Pat and Bob moved to Oceanside, California, in 1951 after Bob joined the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1953, Michael (Mike) Taylor, the first of seven children, arrived.

After Bob’s honorable discharge in 1954, the family moved to Portland and Mike was soon joined by brothers Jeffery (Jeff) in 1954, Daniel (Dan) in 1956, Christopher (Casey) in 1957 and Joseph (Joe) in 1960. The first of two daughters, Rachel, was born in 1963. The Taylor family moved to Gresham in 1967 and the last of the Taylor children, Katherine (Katie) was later born.

Bob was a career educator, high school principal and curriculum consultant, and Pat’s mother was a first grade teacher. All the Taylor children could read and write before they entered school, and they all learned to play at least one musical instrument. Bob was able to bring home the latest movies, on reels, to play for family movie night, with Pat providing popcorn and refreshments for the children.

Pat and Bob divorced in 1981 and Pat returned to college in 1983, ultimately earning a her degree as a Registered Nurse. Her nearly 21-year career at Mt. Hood Hospice began in 1987. Pat served as a Patient Care Coordinator, and from 2000-2011 in quality care. Pat’s kindness and gentle loving nature allowed her to provide exceptional care to hospice patients.

In 1991 Pat met widower Duane Brown, a long-time Hoodland resident with four adult children. They married in 1992 and resided in Brightwood where they shared a love of family, art and nature.

Duane passed away in 2009. Pat later moved to a Sandy senior living community where she resided until her death. Mt. Hood Hospice provided end of life care.

She enjoyed family vacations to the Oregon coast and mountains, and she returned to the coast to vacation with her friends each year in her later life.

Pat was an accomplished artist, her acrylic and watercolor paintings often winning at local art shows. Her beautiful art graces the homes of many, including those of her children. Her sons remember her creating custom-painted lunch boxes for them that were the envy of other children at school.

Pat dedicated herself to her family and was an exceptional wife, mother, neighbor and friend. Despite her large family, Pat always made time for everyone. She cared deeply for her family and friends. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. Pat was always beautiful, both inside and out, and will long be remembered for her elegant appearance and kind, graceful manner. Pat was a friend to all, a counselor to most, and “Mom” to many.

Her gentle, loving spirit, sense of humor and optimism will be missed by all.

Pat is survived and lovingly remembered by her children Mike, Dan (Julie), Casey (Jayne), Joe (Maggie), Rachel (Jay) and Katie; daughter-in-law Karen; step-children Mary, David, Dan (Naheed) and Trudy (Russ); nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pat is predeceased by her parents, first husband Bob, second husband Duane, son Jeff, and brothers Bob and Floyd.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Peace Lutheran Church, 2201 N. Rosa Parks Way, Portland on Saturday, January 28 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat’s memory may be made to Mt. Hood Hospice.
