  1. 1.  Jonas Petter JONSSONJonas Petter JONSSON was born on 7 Aug 1871 in Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden; died on 17 Mar 1949 in Milltown, Polk County, Wisconsin; was buried on 19 Mar 1949 in Milltown Cemetery, Polk County, Wisconsin.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Stone cutter, farmer
    • Confirmation: Aug 1887, Kläppe Marby, Jämtlands län, Sweden

    Notes:

Jonas Petter was confirmed in 1887 according to Kläppe Marby parish records (August 23 or 26 according to the Hösen of Frappnäs 87-94 Household Exam). He was still living at home (Hösen, Marby Annex) at the time of the 1890 Swedish census.

From the Brunflo parish records, as translated ineptly by DRC:

January 21, 1900 previously mentioned Jonas Petter moved from Oviken to Östersund for work, what kind of work we don’t know

    {This is consistent with what is shown in the 1900 Swedish census in which Jonas is shown as one of two bachelor farmhands living on the farm owned by Olof Huldberg at Gård N:o 53 in Östersund Jämtlands län.}

May 10 to December 3, 1908, Märta Greta worked in Östersund where they met

October 13, 1908 the newlyweds moved to Berge No. 1 in Brunflo at a farm owned by A. Genberg in Östersund

1909 Jonas Petter and Märta Greta moved to No. 1 Åkre where their first children were born

1914 According to information, they then lived in No. 2 Åkre for there Anna was born

After that they moved to Viken, but what year can not be determined, because that move was not reported. The emigration certificate was printed from Åkre to North America on July 11, 1917.

Jonas (46) and Marta (36) emigrated to the US from Sweden in August, 1917, with Rudolph (7), Karin (6), and Anna (3). According to EmiHamn, the family emigrated on August 18th, bound for Amery, WI. They crossed the Atlantic north of the German submarine zone during the World War. They arrived at Amery on September 25, 1917, via Ellis Island and Chicago.

    The Ellis Island records show:

Bergensfjord, "sailing from Christiana," arrived at Ellis Island on September 22, 1917. Among the passengers were:

    Jonsson, Jonas Petter 45y
    Jonsson, Marta Greta 36y
    Jonsson, Jon Rudolf 7y
    Jonsson, Karin Margareta 6y
    Jonsson, Anna Teresia 2y

and further down the page, just as Rudolph remembered:

    Ordell, Gustaf Vilhelm 25y

All 6 were listed as "Sweden-Scand." for ethnicity and "Brunflo, Sweden" as place of residence.

Here's the URL for a page on the Bergensfjord: http://www.museumsnett.no/mka/ssa/ber-fjor.htm

The Jonssons (“Johnsons”) were renting a farm in Apple River township east of Balsam Lake at the time (March 31) of the 1920 Census. They had a boarder: a 36 year old Norwegian man named Nils Hildrum. They couldn’t have lived at the Apple River Twp farm for very long if Lizzie Swanson had to have lived nearby to be the midwife for the birth of Carl. (See next paragraph.)

The Johnsons were renting a farm in Balsam Lake township at the time of the census in 1930. The household consisted of John P Johnson, 58, Martha, 49, Rudolph J, 20, Anna T, 15, and Carl R, 9. They did not have a radio. Karin is not listed so was not living at home. Their neighbors were the Axel Greens on one side and the Lester Fullers on the other. Oscar and Lizzie Swanson lived next to the Fullers.

In the 1940 census, he was still John P Johnson. He and Martha, Rudolph, and Carl, lived in Balsam Lake Twp, “on south town line road near east end.” It was the same house that they lived in in 1935. John P is still a citizen of Sweden. A few entries down the form is the entry for Shirley Engels (#640) and his wife and daughter. John P and Martha had fifth grade educations, Rudolph and Carl were high school graduates.
