According to an article in the Minneapolis Tribune’s October 10, 1890, edition, Moses Ripley, Charles’s son, had questioned the older man’s sanity. “Charles Ripley has been pronounced sane by Judge Bailey, after a few hours’ visit. Moses Ripley, the son, claimed that the old man was incapable of manging his own business but the judge thought differently.”

Charles died in 1891 leaving an estate of $75,000. He had real property that was considered quite profitable. This was mostly temement blocks on Washington Avenue south, near 12th and 13th Avenues, which yielded a monthly rental income of $400 to $600.

One Ancestry source has him as Moses Harrison Ripley, born 29 Aug 1840 in Civil, Chesterville, Maine.

In the 1860 census, he is Moses H Ripley, a farmer in Maple Grove Twp in Hennepin County.

In the 1865 state census, he is listed in Minneapolis, Hennepin County. As Bonnie points out, Moses would have been still serving with Hatch’s battalion at the time the census was taken if, indeed, Moses was mustered out of service in January of 1866. Moses and Ophelia’s son Charles was born in 1865 or 1866 so Charles must not have been away from home for the whole two-and-a-half years. There is no indication in the 1865 census that Moses is absent. Bonnie notes that Moses may have been injured during his military service because an 1883 list of pensioners in Anoka County includes Moses who is receiving $4 per month pension for a spine injury.

In the 1870 census, he and his family live in West St. Paul, Dakota County. His occupation is carpenter.

In the 1873 Minneapolis city directory, he is a carpenter residing at “19th Av S betw 2½ and 3d.”

In the 1875 state census, he and his family are listed in Minneapolis, Hennepin County.

In the 1880 census, he and his family lived in Blaine Twp, Anoka County, Minnesota. Moses was a farmer.

According to Bonnie, Moses was elected the first chairman of the Blaine Township Board of Supervisors at that body’s first election in the summer of 1877 when Blaine Township was organized. Moses is credited with giving Blaine its name when he persuaded fellow board members to name the new township in honor of James G. Blaine, a popular senator from Maine.

In the 1885 state census, they were farmers in Fridley.

On 21 April 1887, the Taylors Falls Land Office granted Moses H Ripley a 160 acre homestead at 1 NE 4th PM No Township 31 N, Range 23 W, Section 22, in Anoka County. Its official description on the record over Grover Cleveland’s “signature,” was “northeast quarter of section twenty-two in township thirty-one north of range twenty-three west of the Fourth Principal Meridian in Minnesota, containing 160 acres.”

In the 1890 veterans schedule, Moses H Ripley is listed as living in Blaine and Fridley in Anoka County. He was a Private in the “Hatches Ind Battery” from August 4, 1863, to January 27, 1866, a period of service of 2 years, 5 months, and 28 days.

In the Civil War Soldiers Records and Profiles, Moses H Ripley is shown as having enlisted, as a blacksmith, in Company B, Minnesota Hatch’s Cavalry Battalion. (It was also called Hatch’s Independent Battalion, Minnesota Cavalry.) Here is the description of that battalion:

(Three Years)

Hatch's Cavalry Battalion.--Maj., E. A. C. Hatch. This battalion was organized during Aug. and Sept., 1863, and left for Pembina Oct. 5, for Indian duty, accompanied by one section of the 3d Minn. light battery. It acted as escort for a transportation train from St. Cloud, and from Pomme de Terre Oct. 24 the major portion of the troops were sent to Fort Abercrombie to obtain additional ordnance, the rest of the command under Lieut. Charles Mix, continuing with the train, a junction to be effected at Georgetown.

A sudden thaw compelled the train to rest days and travel nights and the road was lost, the command being thus several days late in reaching Georgetown. Animals and men suffered greatly, owing to the failure of contractors to deliver hay and grain as agreed, and only by most determined work did the expedition continue. Two hundred and fifty horses, mules and oxen died between Georgetown and Pembina, and as much of the stores as could be spared were left at Georgetown.

In December a small detachment surprised and captured a party of Indians and soon afterward some 200 of Little Crow's band surrendered. Others came in until Maj. Hatch had nearly 400, and early in Jan., 1864, the Sioux chiefs, Little Six and Medicine Bottle, were captured, sent to Fort Snelling and after trial were hung for their crimes in the massacre of 1862, Little Six confessing to having personally killed 50 people. In February the battalion was joined by Maj. Joseph R. Brown, with over 40 friendly Indians. Maj. Brown left for Fort Snelling with the prisoners and on April 10, Lieut. Mix and party left for Fort Abercrombie. On May 5, the entire command moved for Fort Abercrombie. Co. C was detailed to Alexandria and Pomme de Terre and Co. D to patrol duty from Fort Abercrombie to Pembina. Maj. Hatch resigned in June because of ill health, being succeeded by Lieut.-Col. C. Powell Adams, and Cos. E and F were mustered in during Aug. and Sept., 1864. Post and patrol duty was the order until 1866, when the regiment was mustered out by companies during April, May and June.

Moses Harrison Ripley was born on August 24, 1840 in Franklin County Maine, to Charles Ripley and Martha Dunsmoor Ripley. They had 6 children, born between 1838 and 1859—Moses was second-born. At age 15, his family moved to Dakota County, Minnesota and a few months later to Minneapolis. He married Ophelia M. Lightbourn, of the West Indies, on June 2, 1859. They had ten children between about 1861 and 1883, seven of whom survived them.

On August 4, 1863 Moses Ripley enlisted in Hatch’s Independent Battalion, formed in response to the 1862 Sioux Uprising. The battalion was dispatched to Pembina near the Red River on the Canadian border on October 5, 1863 and arrived on November 13, 1863, the men having marched the entire distance. After enduring a harsh Dakota winter, food shortage and the loss of most of their horses, the battalion received orders to dispatch to Fort Abercrombie in Dakota Territory. Ripley was discharged on January 27, 1866 and returned to Minneapolis.

Census records for the years 1860 and 1870 list Moses Ripley as residing in various towns around the St. Paul and Minneapolis area. His occupations included carpentry and farming.

In November, 1875 he settled on a farm in Anoka County. In 1877, Blaine Township was established and, at the suggestion of Moses Ripley, was named in honor of James Gillespie Blaine, a politician from Ripley’s home state of Maine. At the first township election Ripley was named chairman of the Board of Supervisors. He served in subsequent township offices before moving to Fridley sometime later.

In the summer of 1891, Moses contested his father’s will which left his portion of his father’s estate to Moses’s wife for the protection of Moses as well as Moses’s family. The father had concluded that “since the war [Moses] had developed intemperate habits.”

A brief article in the 24 October 1891 edition of the Tribune, p. 8, titled “A Mad Pater Familias”: Moses H. Ripley, a son of the late Charles Ripley, who died some time ago leaving property worth many thousands of dollars, was up for examination before Judge Corrigan yesterday. Some four weeks ago he developed acute symptoms of insanity and threatened to kill his family. The judge ordered Moses to be sent to Rochester. He is a married man with seven children and is 51 years of age.

Moses Ripley died in Rochester, Minnesota of influenza and pneumonia at the age of 51 on January 19, 1892 and was buried at Layman’s Cemetery in Minneapolis. In 1896, his grave was relocated to Hillside Cemetery. Ophelia died on December 12, 1893, also from pneumonia, in Minneapolis. She was buried at Hillside Cemetery along with Moses and his parents.

The Fortiers’ address at the time that Lila Joquette was born was 3027 Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis.

In the 1939 city directory, wife Sarah E, he is a painter for Shaw Motor Co. He lives at 3027 Hiawatha Avenue.

In the 1940 city directory, wife Sarah E, he is a polisher for Shaw Motor Co. He lives at 2615½ 16th Avenue S.

In the 1940 census, he and Sarah and Lilah live in the “rear, up” apartment at 3027 Hiawatha Avenue. Howard is unemployed and looking for work. He was usually a painter at an auto garage. Howard and Sarah had eighth-grade educations.

By 1941, he was the financial secretary and business agent of the United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers Union, Local 1140.

By 1948, Local 1140 was embroiled in a battle between “left-wing” forces and “regulars.” Howard was a regular, and a supporter of Hubert Humphrey who was considered at best a moderate in the ongoing battle between left wing adherents and regular union workers. Howard won a crucial election in late 1948 in which he was re-elected financial secretary of Local 1140 over a left wing candidate by a 2-1 margin.

In January of 1949, Howard was appointed by Minneapolis acting mayor Eric G Hoyer to fill a vacancy on the fair employment practices commission.

In 1949, local 1140 was expelled from the CIO for alleged left-wing domination. At that point, Howard took his local, representing garage mechanics, into the Teamsters as local 974.

Living at 8019 Cedar Lake Road in St. Louis Park at the time of his death. He had lived there for 7 years. His death certificate shows that he was the Secretary/Treasurer of the Teamsters Union Local 974. He had attended a membership meeting of the local the evening before he died. The union was then in negotiations with 46 new car dealer garages.

Died at home of a heart attack complicated by diabetes and hypertension.

In the 1940 census, he lived with his mother and step-father on Portland Avenue “between Hwy 52 & 53” in the village of Richfield. His uncle, George Christy, and wife Rachel lived next door. He was employed as a messenger for a postal telegraph company.

In the 1942 Minneapolis city directory, he is a simonizer and lives at 1822 Park Avenue, Apartment B.

In August of 1945, while serving in the U.S. Navy, he was a machinists mate 1st class aboard a seaplane tender stationed at a repair base in the Admiralty Islands.

He was the informant for his mother’s death certificate. At that time he lived at 4450 Stinson Boulevard.

Minnesota labor leader Howard Fortier was known as a gentleman and for keeping his word.

"He was one of the outstanding leaders in labor history," said Robert Fenlon of Mendota Heights, an attorney for the Greater Metropolitan Auto Dealers Association. "The thing that I admire about him was that you could always bank on his word."

Fortier, 77, ran the state Teamsters union for much of the 1980s. He died Wednesday of heart complications at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

His career with the Teamsters began in 1953, when he became an organizer for Teamsters Joint Council 32, the umbrella organization for all Teamsters locals in Minnesota. In 1960 he was hired as a business agent by Local 974, and the next year was elected secretary-treasurer.

At the state level, he was elected a trustee to the executive board of Joint Council 32 in 1963. He became secretary-treasurer in 1965 and president in 1985.

Dan Fortier of Minnetonka said his father was "an outstanding human being who brought great dignity to his job, along with candor, integrity, trust, word of honor." He said his father was on a first-name basis with many governors, mayors, legislators and judges.

"He had their ear, and he talked policy with them," Dan Fortier said. "He was so involved and he was so respected."

John Derus of Minneapolis, a former City Council member and Hennepin County commissioner, called Fortier a "tough guy" who was "thoroughly decent."

"Howard Fortier was a guy who believed there was a lot of dignity in working with your hands," he said. "He was most at home with guys who drove trucks for a living."

Al Hofstede, former Minneapolis mayor, said Fortier never forgot who he represented.

"He fully understood that you have to work with management and make sure that they grow, because then you have the opportunity to grow," he said.

In addition to his son, Fortier is survived by his wife, Sandy; four daughters, Cherie Hazel of Prior Lake, Barb Wood of Savage, Pam Rose of Shakopee and Sarah of Columbia Heights; two other sons, Sean of Grand Forks, N.D., and Scott of Little Falls, Minn.; three sisters, Barbara Fautch of Bloomington, Lila Cavanaugh of Minneapolis and Mary Petri of Finlayson, Minn.; four brothers, Rhodes Peterson of Minneapolis, Duane Peterson, and Fred and Ed Fortier, both of Plymouth; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Hase, Daniel James (May 30, 1953 - May 9, 2007), suddenly (while doing what he loved most), left us without intention. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Banks; 2 sons, Daniel (Rebekah) Banks and Jonathan (Hannah Bustin) Banks; grandson, Colton Banks; his mother, Helen Hase; brothers, Donald (Lori) and David; sisters, Anna Marie (Louie) Ferraro and Nancy Garcia; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, and the most beautiful, loving group of friends a man could ever ask for. Preceded in death by his father, Donald and brother-in-law, Augie Garcia. Dan grew up in Columbia Heights and was a 1971 Columbia Heights graduate. He was a long- standing member of the American Motorcyclist Association. He was an expert, skilled rider whose life was cut short while on his last ride. Dan enjoyed being a champion hill climber and a former District #23 member, as well as enjoying any day that offered a "friendly compete" mix with his boys or fellow dirt-bikers, regardless of location - at his home, dirt track, or some near or far away competition event... It was all he ever wanted to do: ride or play in the dirt. So many times Dan was always the first call for advice or ideas. He will be forever missed.

Fortier, Daniel L. Age 72, of Minneapolis Passed away suddenly on March 24, 2021. Dan grew up in Richfield, MN and after graduation from Benilde high school he served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-1970. Dan followed in his grandfather, Howard F. Fortier and his father, Howard G. Fortier's footsteps and played an active role in the Teamsters Union for 37 years. Dan began in 1971, as an organizer with the Teamster Joint Council 32, and held the following positions throughout his career: IBT Representative appointed by James P. Hoffa; President, Teamsters Joint Council 32; Secretary Treasurer and Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 970 until his retirement in 2008. Dan was a proud, strong union supporter and donated resources whenever he could. Dan was also an active business leader in the community and held the position of Trustee at Union Bank, Board member with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and founding member and past President of the Minnesota 100 Club. Dan was friends with many public servants and supported their cause generously. Dan is preceded in death by parents, Rita C. Fortier, Howard G. Fortier, and brother-in-law Duane T. Hazel. Survived by loving companion and best friend Kimberly Midlo; Sisters; Cheryl Hazel, Barbara (Ed) Wood, Pamela (Jeff) Koepke and Sarah (Greg) Austin; Brothers, Sean (Jen) Fortier and Scott Fortier, Kim's family; Wendy (Bill) Orr, Joey (Molly) Midlo, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a great, great nephew, Uncle Ed (Martha) Fortier; Aunts, Ginny (Vernon) Lahr and Lucy (Dick) Faust, and many dear cousins and long-lasting friends. Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf and could often be found with his partner-in-crime, Steve Hurlbert, at "Otters" participating in these activities. Dan treasured his memories of sharing stories and laughs with his many, many good friends. His kindness and generosity to others is a legacy he leaves behind.
