Orris William DANE

Notes:

An article in the Duluth News-Tribune, Februarly 23, 1916, shows that Orris was a member of the Biwabik volunteer fire department.

He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Kinney in St. Louis County. He was a locomotive engineer for the Deau Iron Company and the “Deau mine near Kinney.” He was married with one child. He was described as tall and of medium build with grey eyes and light brown hair.

In the 1920 census, he and Alma and their two children were living in Great Scott Twp, St. Louis County. Orris was a stationary engineer for an iron mine.

In the 1930 census, the family lived in Missabe Mountain Twp, St. Louis County. Orris worked in an iron mine. He was not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, Orris (indexed as Gane), Alma, and their grandson Peter and “granddaughter” Dennis Wannebo lived in Biwabik. Orris and Alma lived in the same house in 1935. Peter Wannebo had lived in Virginia in St. Louis County in 1935. Orris’s occupation was shop work in an iron ore mine.

He and Frances were living in California (Van Nuys, North Hollywood, San Fernando Valley) in 1939. He was a mechanic for Lockheed Aircraft.

In the 1940 census, he and Frances and their 3 children lived in Los Angeles in a house that he owned. Five years earlier, Richard had lived in Gilbert, St. Louis County, Minnesota, Frances had lived in Bemidji, and their oldest child, Roberta, age 6, born in Minnesota, had lived in Van Nuys, California. Richard was a mechanic for Lockheed.

Called Peter Wannebo in the 1940 census. His birth certificate shows his name as Peter Lyle Johnson, son of Russell W Johnson and Edna Marie Dane. Russell was a mechanic and had been born in North Dakota. Edna had been born in Kinney, Minnesota.

Probably a policeman in El Paso.

He married Estalena Davis in Harris County on 20 Dec 1987.

A Peter L Johnson, b. 17 Jul 1933, lived in Houston, Texas. That Peter L Johnson died in Houston on 9 Apr 1996. He was a veteran (Sgt, U.S. Army, Korea) and is buried at Houston National Cemetery.
