She was the sixth child of Adolph and Flora Gjevre, born September 18, 1924 in Decorah, Iowa. She graduated from Decorah High School in 1942. Her widowed mother, best girlfriend, and she joined her two sisters in Long Beach, California in 1943.

She worked for the Social Security Administration until her marriage to Frederick Eugene Daniels in December, 1947. They moved to West Yellowstone, Montana and ran his motel. Gene had two years of college left to complete. He returned to the University of Montana and received his BA degree in 1951.

Having sold the motel, they returned to California. Gene became a distributor for the LA Examiner in Ventura, California, where they raised their two children, son Dean and daughter Dianna. Gene changed occupations in 1955, joining Investors Diversified Services and also obtaining his realtor’s license. While residing in Ventura, Helen worked in several doctor’s offices as a medical secretary.

In 1973 her husband transferred with IDS to Northern California. They moved to Lake Wildwood. Helen worked at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital and then Beale Air Force Hospital until she retired on 1986. After retirement they made several trips to Hawaii and yearly trips to Montana. Helen also joined a health club for water aerobics, which she continued until age 80, when she could no longer drive.

After Gene’s death in 1996, Helen kept busy with exercise, Sons of Norway, NARFE and widows support group.

After moving to Lake Wildwood, both children relocated to the area and married local residents. Helen enjoyed her children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her son Dean (Robin) of Penn Valley; daughter Dianna (Cam) Suarez of Colfax; grandchildren Michelle (Alhader) Maiga of Penn Valley, Courtney (Johan) Daniels of Grass Valley, Jessie (Brendon) Suarez of Bluefield, Virginia, Donavon and Cruz Suarez of Colfax, California; great-grandchildren Kaya, Dune, Samba and Aminata of Grass Valley, and Sydney Vorheis-Hyer of Virginia. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Clara, Mildred, Arlyne, Norma and brother Herbert.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Chapel of the Angels Mortuary, 250 Race Street, Grass Valley, CA.

Arrangements are under the care of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.

Rick A. Johnson, 64, of rural Balaton died Monday, June 30, 2014, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was born June 21, 1950, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Rodney and Berneta (Block) Johnson. He was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Russell. He graduated from the Russell High School in 1968.

On Oct. 25, 1975, Rick was united in marriage to Marilyn Skolberg. To this union, two children were born, namely, Ryan and Sara.

As a licensed plumber and pipefitter, Rick owned his own plumbing and heating business. He was also engaged in farming and worked for Bisbee Plumbing and Heating for a number of years. At the time of his death, Rick was employed by the city of Marshall as a building inspector. Owning and operating Red Line Custom, a gunsmithing business, he worked with his passion, which surrounded shooting sports.

Rick was very talented and creative, kind and caring. His love for family, nature, sharing time with friends, being involved in shooting sports, enjoying watching car races and his bond with his Heeler dogs will always be remembered. Every day was a good day by Rick's standards.

Rick was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the United States Practical Shooting Association. As a certified firearms training instructor, he mentored youth to safely enjoy shooting sports.

Those who will dearly miss him are his wife, Marilyn of Balaton; son, Ryan (and Katie) of South Sioux City, Neb.; daughter, Sara (and special friend Matthew VanBuskirk) of Balaton; mother, Berneta of Ethel, Wash.; four grandchildren, Courtney, Jena, Tegan and Zoi Johnson; brother, Joel (and Sue) of Ethel, Wash.; sisters, Peggy (and Dennis) Schenck of Prior Lake and Kathy (and Daryl) Neels of Russell; brother-in-law, Raymond Skolberg of Brownton and many other relatives and friends.

Viola Teslow, age 98, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday morning, November 8, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, MN.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Mark Kvale officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 11 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Wednesday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at the church.

Esther Viola (Tollefson) Teslow was born March 6, 1916 at home in rural Calmar, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Alma ( Halvorson) Tollefson. She was baptized March 19, 1916 at Springfield Lutheran Church and confirmed June 7, 1931 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Viola attended rural country school and then graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1936, earning a Normal Teaching certificate by taking extra classes. She then did substitute teaching for a little while.

Viola was united in marriage to Francis Norman “Frank” Teslow on February 11, 1939 at the Springfield Lutheran Church parsonage. To this union, six children were born: Janet, Patricia, Susan, Gary, Debra and Dianne.

Frank and Viola farmed for many years and she was an active farm wife and homemaker, raising her family. She later worked for 18 years at Decorah Community Schools in food service at the high school. She was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church where she was very active in circle. The church was very important to her.

Viola loved spending time with her whole family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she really enjoyed their visits; she also loved to cook for her family and all of their gatherings. She was a very good lefse maker, loved to play cards, reading, embroidery, making quilts, gardening, and enjoyed dancing with Frank.

Viola became a resident of Wellington Place Assisted Living in September 2011.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Frank on January 30, 2006; one daughter, Janet Funston on October 2, 2007; one brother, Walter Tollefson; four sisters, Lillian Johnson, Helen Tollefson, Pearl Tollefson and Edna Grace Austad; two sons-in-law, Fred Gates and Marvin Manness; two grandchildren, Sherri and Kevin Funston; and a great-grandson, Cody Nikkel.

Viola is survived by one son, Gary (Sue) Teslow of Decorah; four daughters, Patricia Manness of Barstow, CA, Susan (George) Vondruska of Watersmeet, MI, Debra (Stan) Moellers of Decorah and Dianne (Vince) Story of Billings, MT; one son-in-law, Stan Funston of Cedar Rapids, IA; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Theresa Teslow of Frankville, IA.
