John Estrum, aged 80 years, died at his home in Warsaw on Friday, December, 30. Deceased was born in Valders, Norway, in 1836. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Sigrid Leite. A year later the couple came to America, settling in Wisconsin. After remaining there for a time they removed to Warsaw, where they have since made their home. Ten children blessed the union, six of whom survive and are as follows: Mrs. Eberhart of Thief River Falls; Mrs. McCurdy of Minneapolis, Nels, Gilbert, and Evan, and Mrs. George Kolstad all of the town of Warsaw. Funeral services were held Tuesday. Rev. Hauge officiating, interment being made in Vangs cemetery.

Gravestone says, quite incorrectly, that he died April 26th. Buried as John Johnson Ellingboe III.

Going by the name of J. J. Austinson and farming in Dane County at the time of the 1880 census. Sons John and Martin are shown as born in Wisconsin but son Ole is shown as born in Minnesota.

In the 1900 census, he is John J. Austinson (b. Oct 1850) with wife Emma (b. June 1855), son Martin (b. Mar 1878), daughter Bertha M. (b. Nov 1882), son William A. (b. Dec 1886), daughter Josephine O. (b. Feb 1889), Adolph A. (b. July 1892), and son Thomas A. (b. July 1894 or 1895). Ole and Bertha Strand live next door and son John M. Ellingboe lives on the other side of Ole and Bertha.

In the 1902 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, he was a mail carrier on Route #2. He lived at 614 St. Olaf Avenue.

He is John Ellingboe in the 1905 state census. He and his family live at 614 St. Olaf Avenue in Northfield. John is a mail carrier.

Listed as J. J. Austinson in the 1910 census. He is 61, is living at 614 St. Olaf Avenue, and has been married to Emma for 33 years. Emma is 53 and is shown as having had 11 children, 9 still living. Adolph is 17, Thomas is 15, and Julius is 8. J. J.’s next door neighbor is Ole Rolvaag.

In the 1911 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, he is Jno J Ellingboe, driver for Eltun & Ellingboe Bros. He lives at 614 St. Olaf.

In the 1915 Faribault city directory, which includes Northfield, he is Jno J Ellingboe, clerk for Eltun & Ellingboe Bros. He lives at 319 Plum.

He is John Ellingboe in the 1920 census, living with his wife Emma and sister-in-law Bertha Erickson, at 319 Plum Street in Northfield. John is a salesman in a clothing store. The 1921 city directory says he is a janitor with the Ellingboe Dry Goods Company.

John J. and Emma Ellingboe.  John J. Ellingboe, III, married Ambjor “Emma” Strand about 1874.  John was the son of John O. Ellingboe, II, and Margrete Klokergaarden, natives of Norway who immigrated to near Stoughton, WI, about 1849.  Emma was the daughter of Ole and Berit Strand.  Ole and Berit immigrated from Vang, Norway, when Emma was 8 years old, about 1865, to near Stoughton, WI.  John J. and Emma farmed in Wisconsin about 10 years before moving to Northfield.  At Northfield, John J. was a farmer, in addition he was a postal carrier for 20 years and worked in his son’s clothing store.  John J. and Emma had a family of:  John Morris, married Elese Hendrickson and 2nd wife, Thea Berg; Ole married Esther Elton; Martin married Lillian Harmer; Bertha married Hans Gunderson; William married Sadie Nelson and 2nd wife, Nellie Ducette; Josie married Olavus Anfinson; Osten “Adolph” married Elizabeth Rech; Thomas married Grace Thorson; and Joel married Madge Hamblin.  John M. first went into business as partner in Elton-Ellingboe general store in McGloughery Block, 4th and Division Street, Northfield.  Later, John M. and Martin started a men’s clothing store, Ellingboe Clothing located at 19 Bridge Square, which they operated for 41 years with the help of Joel and Thomas, until they sold the business to Leutholds.  About the same time, 1911, Adolph managed a men’s clothing store at Cannon Falls, MN, for John M.  Ole and William worked at Lee Furniture, in Northfield, in the middle of the McGloughery block.  Ole later moved to Ladysmith, WI, where he had his furniture and funeral home.  William had a mortuary in Crystal Falls, MI.  Bertha married Hans Gunderson in 1904.  Hans was employed many years at the Northfield Independent.  Josie worked as a clerk in the general store, Elthon-Ellinboe.  Josie married Olavus Anfinson, of Northfield, on November 16, 1908.  Olavus was a barber in Northfield for over 50 years.  Josie and Olavus had 5 living children and lived in Northfield until he passed away in 1946, at which time she went to live with one of her children in Minneapolis.  Josie passed away October 9, 1972, at the Dilley Retirement Center of Northfield.

He may have been a policeman in Crookston in the early 1890s. A newspaper account from that period, exact date not given, mentions a “policeman Ellingbo.”

Andrew and family were living in the city of Crookston in Polk County, Minnesota at the time of the 1900 census. The children were still in school and Andrew was a saloon-keeper. (He was a bartender in the 1895 state census.)

In the 1905 state census, the family is living in Crookston. Andrew is a teamster. Tillie is a clerk.

In the 1910 census, the family is living at 511 Woodland Avenue in Crookston. Julian is a machinist in the automobile industry and Matilda is a saleslady at a dry goods store. Andrew is a bartender in a saloon.

In the 1920 census, he is Andrew J. Ellingboe, 62, living in the city of Crookston, Lowell Twp, Polk County. He is retired. Living with him is his wife Emily, single son Julian, 27, a race-car driver, and his daughter Mathilda, 34, and her husband, William L. Gilbert, 36, a railroad conductor.

In the 1930 census, he and Emily are living with their daughter Matilda and her husband in Crookston.

The informant for his death certificate was Jules Ellingboe. Andrew died of heart exhaustion.

In the 1900 census, he was Mathew Ellingboe, a house painter living in Stoughton with his wife Maggie and their daughter Minnie. They also housed three boarders.

On August 14, 1903, he attempted to beat his wife to death and then kill himself by hanging. As the headline to the story in the State Journal says, he failed at both. The article says that he was jealous of his wife and had been drinking heavily recently although witnesses said he was not drunk when he tried to murder his wife. The article also said that he “has a wife and one child, a married daughter, and the family conducts a boarding house on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Stoughton.

He called himself, and signed himself, “M.A. Ellingbo” in documents related to his first wife’s estate.

In the 1910 census, he was Matthew M Ellingbo, a house painter living in Stoughton with his second wife Anna. They also have six lodgers.

Seems to be referred to as Nels Ellingbo in a few brief articles in the Janesville Daily Gazette in 1917.

An article in the April 22, 1922, edition of the Capital Times notes that communication with Northfield had been received of the death of Matt’s brother John. The article mentions a sister of Matt and John, Mrs. Jens Cold, also of Stoughton.

In the 1930 census, he and Andrina were living in Stoughton. Matt was a carpenter.

Matt Ellingbo inherited $6,000 from the estate of his wife Andrena, an extraordinary sum in 1934. Also named in her will: $50 to the Martin Luther Orphan’s home, $50 to the United Lutheran Church for mission work in China, and $100 each to Mrs. Emma Eggum, Chicago, Emma Iverson, Dunkirk, and Josie Ruer, Stoughton.

Attending his funeral were his niece and nephew, Bertha Ellingboe Gunderson and John Ellingboe of Northfield. An obit in the Capital Times says that he was the last survivor of “the family of Johan and Margaret Ellingbo, Stoughton pioneers of covered wagon days.”

Shown as a merchant in the 1905 state census at which time he and his wife lived either with or next door to her parents and siblings in the village of Dennison. John had lived in the area for only a year and three months at that time.

In the 1910 and 1920 censuses, he and his family live in Dennison where he is a merchant in general merchandise. He is probably in partnership with his brother-in-law Austin.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as J E Norsving of Dennison. His father was G K Norsving. J E was a member of the Samband in 1909.

NORTHFIELD--Funeral services for John E. Norswing, 75, former prominent businessman in Dennison and Northfield, who passed away at the Lincoln Rest Home on Sunday, October 17, following an illness which has extended over eight years, will be held Thursday, October 21, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Schumm at 1:30 o'clock and at St. John's Lutheran church at 2 p. m. The Rev. Ivar Ramseth will officiate. Interment will be made in Oaklawn cemetery. The pallbearers will be Martin Nelson, Knute Leidal, William Swarts, Andrew Nelson, Olaf Broin and George Hagen. Friends may call at the Anderson and Veaux Funeral Home until Thursday morning and at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Schumm until the hour of the service. John E. Norswing was born in Holden township, Goodhue county, on January 24, 1873, the son of Gudmund and Brita Holien Norswing. He spent his young lifetime at the farm home in Holden township and attended Albert Lea and St. Olaf academies. He operated a general merchandise store at Dennison from 1904 until 1923. At that time the Tri-County Oil Company was organized and he became manager and operated the Northfield station from 1926 to 1940 when his health began to fail. He made his home in the Dennison and Northfield communitites throughout his lifetime. On June 6, 1903, he was united in marriage to Miss Sigrid Austinson in Minneapolis. She passed away several years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John Schumm (Inez), Northfield, and Mrs. Floyd Leidal (Bernice) of Harrisburg, Pa., and one son, G. T. Norswing of New Richland. There are also three grandchildren and one brother, O. M. Norswing of Seattle, Wash., surviving.

Date of death provided by Orville Anfinson is 10 Jan 1959. This is also the date on the gravestone (which is for John Morris) or cemetery records. However, his funeral was reported in the Northfield News in its January 13, 1958 edition.

John Maurice and his brother Martin were the partners in the Ellingboe Brothers businesses in Northfield in the early 1920s. The businesses were a dry goods store at 401 S. Division Street and a clothing store at 19 Mill Square. In the 1899 Northfield directory, Martin and John Maurice were both clerks for C. W. Gress & Son so that may be the predecessor business. A Northfield News headline referring to Martin was in the October 6, 1922 edition: “Sold Stores.” John Ellingboe’s occupation is listed as “clothing, 19 Mill Square” in the 1926 Northfield directory and there was also a clothing business called Steele & Ellingboe at 327 S. Division in that directory. According to a headline in the Northfield News, John sold the clothing store and business to Leonard Peterson in March of 1945.

“St. Olaf's small ground space presented scant opportunity for participation in sports. The land south of Mr. John M. Ellingboe's present residence on Division Street south served as an improvised baseball diamond, rarely used....”

John M. Ellingboe was born November 30, 1874, near Stoughton, Wisconsin.  His parents, John J. and Ambjor (Strand) Ellingboe, moved the family to a farm located 3 miles east of Northfield on the Wall Street road in 1882.  John attended a small rural school, Northfield High School for one year and then went back to help on the farm until 1882 when the family moved to town.  It was then that John Ellinboe began his long and successful career in local sales.  His first job placed him behind the counter of the Skinner and Drew general merchandise store (located where the Northfield Variety Store is now).  During this time he was able to raise the money necessary to support a wife and married Elise Hendrickson June 25, 1893.  Elise was born April 2, 1872, in Solor, Norway.  She came to America at the age of 12 when her parents, John and Karen Hendrickson, immigrated and settled in the Christiana neighborhood north of Northfield.  John and Elise eventually moved into a large house at 811 Division Street where they raised a family which included Alice (Mrs. Oscar Simonson) who died in 1922, Louelle (Mrs. Herschel Reich), Mildred (Mrs. Elmer S. Hjortland) and John L.  All the children graduated from St. Olaf College.  John Ellingboe had hoped his son, John, would follow him in the retail business, but instead he became a noted artist of the southwest.  Elise died of a stroke January 13, 1937.  He married Thea Berg July 16, 1940.  In 1897 John left his job at the general store for a step up as clerk in the first “exclusive” store in Northfield, the C. W. Gress clothing store (located where the Mitchell Store is now).  His brother, Martin, was also employed there, and the two began to plan for a store of their own, “Ellingboe’s” men’s clothing store at 19 Bridge Square (now an office section of the First Bank of Northfield) opened in 1903.  John Ellingboe continued that business for the next 42 years.  In 1907 John and Martin Ellingboe formed a partnership with john Eltun and bought the Skinner and Drew general store which had by this time been moved to the building at the southeast corner of E. 4th and Division Street.  For 17 years John worked at both stores.  In 1922 John purchased his brother Martin’s interest in both the Northfield stores.  The following year he sold the general store but continued to operate the “Ellingboe’s” men’s store.  In 1945 John sold his store and retired after 51 years of serving the citizens of Northfield from behind the counter.  An interesting fact is that the sale of the store was made without the usual requirement of an inventory of wares; for the buyer knew Mr. Ellingboe’s reputation for honesty and accepted his word for the value of the stock.  The store retained the name of “Ellingboe’s” for several years thereafter.  John enjoyed an active retirement until his death in 1958, at age 83.  In 1973 a granddaughter of John’s, Elaine Hjortland Feroe and her family moved to Northfield where she is on the staff of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  This church is the one John Ellinboe joined in 1883.

In the 1935 directory, he has no special entry for himself. He is simply a “collr” and lives with Lillian J at 153 North Western Ave, apartment 9.

In the 1937 St. Paul city directory, he is a salesman for Rothschild’s. He and Ada L live in Newport.

In the 1940 census, he and Ada live in Newport in Washington County in a house they own worth $7500. In 1935, Martin had lived in Cook County, Wisconsin (there is no such county in Wisconsin), and Ada had lived in LeSueur County, Minnesota. Martin was a clothing salesman. Ada was a saleslady of furs. Martin had made $1489 in 1939, Ada had made $1380.

In the 1941 St. Paul city directory, he is a salesman for Rothschild’s. He lives in Newport.

In the 1952 St. Paul city directory, his was the only entry for an Ellingboe. He lived on 2nd Avenue in Newport.

His obituary was in the November 12, 1953 edition of the Faribault Daily News: “Martin Ellingboe, 75, former Northfield businessman, passed away Sunday in St. Paul after a brief illness. He had his home there since 1920. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilberscheid Funeral Parlors in St. Paul. Mr. Ellingboe is survived by his widow of St. Paul and by six brothers and two sisters.”

“Bill” Ellingboe, 25, an undertaker, was the victim of her defense. A bullet from a 38.55 calibre hunting rifle entered his jaw and came out at his temple. Physicians say he will recover.

Mrs. Crandall was lying on the bed crooning her two small children to sleep Tuesday night. Her husband, garage and livery owner, had driven to Courderoy Lake. The house was open.

At about 9 o’clock, according to police, Ellingboe, who is married and has two children, entered the bed chamber. He made advances and Mrs. Crandall grabbed her husband’s rifle. In the scuffle which followed, Ellingboe was shot. Mrs. Crandall fled downstairs, shouting that she was going for her husband. Ellingboe staggered after her. She leaped into the family sedan, hatless and coatless, and drove away. Ellingboe was found in the yard by Fred Crandall, brother-in-law of the woman. He took Ellingboe home.

Some time later, Mrs. Crandall staggered into a restaurant at Cameron Junction and collapsed. She was taken to a hospital at Rice Lake.

At the hospital she was hysterical and not until late yesterday was she identified. Her husband was notified and came for her.

Ellingboe was placed in the Sisters hospital here and will recover it was said today.

Both principals in the affair were respected citizens. Fred Crandall said Ellingboe was intoxicated.

County Attorney D. H. Huckhart was not decided whether charges will be brought against either.

A different article on the incident noted, “Ellingboe … was said to have admitted to Ladysmith authorities that he had persistently annoyed Mrs. Crandall for more than a year and that he last night entered her apartment and attempted assault.”

The Ellingboe and Crandall families had been friendly for a long time and much of Crandall’s auto livery business came through funeral work which he secured from Ellingboe.

Ellingboe claimed that he had called at the Crandall home and when no one answered the door he entered and was engaged in conversation with Mrs. Crandall when the shot was fired by her.

In the 1930 census he and his family lived in Crystal Falls, Michigan, where he was an undertaker at a furniture and undertaking store. Both boys were single and living at home.

In the 1940 census, he and Sadie and Harold lived in Crystal Falls where William worked for an “undertaking establishment.” They lived in a rental residence, the same house in which they had lived in 1935. William earned $1500 in 1939. He was a high-school graduate, Sadie had an eighth-grade education.

In his World War II draft registration, he gave as the person who would always know his address his son Lloyd. William’s employer was L. A. Henry of Crystal Falls.

In the 1950 census, he and his wife Ellen live in Crystal Falls. He is 63 and works as a mortician in a funeral parlor.

According to the history of her parents, Josie lived in Northfield until Olavus passed away in 1946, at which time she went to live with one of her children in Minneapolis.  Josie passed away October 9, 1972, at the Northfield Hospital.    

Mrs Josie O Anfinson, 83 of St. Louis Park, formerly of Northfield, died on Monday October 9, 1972 at Northfield Hospital. She had spent about a month in the Dilley Convalescent unit before being transferred to the hospital last Saturday.

The funeral service was held on Wednesday, October 11, at 11:00am at the Benson-Anderson Funeral Home. Mrs Donald Klinfelter was the organist and Sigurd Fredrickson the vocal soloist.

Interment was in Northfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Page and LeRoy Page of Northfield, Percy Page of Castle Rock, Dale Crosby of River Falls, WI, Edwin Hed of St Louis Park and Roger Page of Lakeville.

Mrs. Anfinson, nee Josie Ellingboe, was born on August 23, 1889 in Northfield, the daughter of John and Emma (Strand) Ellingboe. She attended public schools in Northfield and in 1908 was married to Olavus Anfinson. She lived most of her married life in Northfield where her late husband operated a barber shop. After his death in 1946, she made her home much of the time with her children in St. Louis Park. She was a member of St Johns Lutheran church here.

Survivors include two sons, Maurice of St Louis Park and Orville of Bellevue, WA, three daughters, Mrs Eleanor Page of Northfield, Mrs Norman Eide, (Esther) of Redding, CA, Mrs Edwin Hed (Bertha) of St Louis Park, and two brothers, Thomas Ellingboe of St Paul, and Joel Ellingboe of Calif.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, three children, nine brothers and sisters.

That house was built in 1892. The building is a 1 3/4 story, three bedroom, one bathroom, one half-bathroom, 1449 square foot, frame house, with a detached garage.

In the 1931 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He and Grace live at 34 S Lexington Parkway.

In the 1935 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He and Grace live at 955 Lombard.

In the 1937 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He lives at 1049 Goodrich, apartment C. Grace isn’t included in his listing.

In the 1940 census, he and Grace and Wenonah live in St. Paul at 1838 Laurel, a rented residence. Thomas and Grace each had two years of high school. He was a salesman in a retail clothing store and had earned $1920 in 1939. Living with them was their daughter Marilyn and her husband and daughter.

In the 1941 St. Paul city directory, he is still with Rothschild. He lives on a rural postal delivery route.

Their rural Ramsey County home, described as “at Labore Road and Edgerton Street” had a fire in April of 1945. The 3:30 a.m. fire had been discovered by Grace’s brother Lawrence who was staying with the Ellingboes while serving on a jury in St. Paul.

In November of 1946, he was a passenger in, and the owner of, a car driven by his daughter Marilyn Stapleton (who would have been pregnant at the time and married to Howard Paynter) which was involved in a collision with a car owned and driven by Roy D. Guerin. Marilyn’s daughter Jacqueline was also a passenger in the car. The damages to the vehicles, and injuries to the occupants of those vehicles, while apparently minor, were the subject of a lawsuit in which Thomas was the plaintiff. The case was of some significance because it resulted in conflicting verdicts arising from a questionable instruction to the jury and had to be resolved on appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1949.

Northfield News:

Ellingboe Joel Northfield News Apr/1981 Brothers who once lived in Northfield died within a day of each other. They were Joel Ellingboe, 79, who died in Mountain View, Calif., on April 28, 1981, and Thomas O. Ellingboe,? 86, who died in St. Paul on April 29. Both had worked in the Ellingboe Clothing store in Northfield, (in the building now occupied by Northfield Insurance on Bridge Square) when it was owned by their late brothers, John and Martin Ellingboe. Joel is survived by his wife, Madge of Cupertino, Calif., but she was taken seriously ill just a couple of days after his death. Their only child, Roger Ellingboe, died two or three years ago. Two grandchildren survive, Richard Ellingboe of Cupertino and Stephen Ellingboe of Renton, Wash., also eight great-grandchildren.

Ellingboe was born in Northfield on Sept. 24, 1901. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church of Los Altos, of Masonic orders including the Osman Temple Shrine in St. Paul. The Ellingboes had lived in the Twin Cities from the time they left Northfield until they retired to California. The memorial service was held Monday evening, May 4, at the Union Presbyterian Church in Los Altos, the Rev. Kent Meads officiating.

Tom Ellingboe had always lived in St. Paul since leaving Northfield. He is survived by three daughters, Betty Peters (Mrs. Wallace) of St. Paul, Marilyn Paynter (Mrs, Howard) of Shreveport, La, Nona Hoffman (Mrs. Robert) of Liberty, Mo.; also six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Private interment was held in Forest Lawn Cemetery, St. Paul. There was no visitation. The arrangements were made by the Willwerscheid & Peters Mortuary.

John M. Ellingboe, who continued the clothing business here after other members of the family had moved away, died on Jan.10, 1958. He was then 83 and had been retired since 1945. He had been in business in Northfield for 42 years since 1903. Martin Ellingboe had already died at the time of Johns death. The brothers were sons of John J. and Ambjor (Strand) Ellingboe. The older members of the family were born in Stoughton, Wis., and the family moved to Northfield in 1882. They settled on the Wall Street road on the farm that has for many years now been in the Miller family.

A note in the “Bemidji” section of the Duluth Evening Herald’s Saturday, August 27, 1904, edition said, “Miss Tillie Ellingbo, who has been the guest of Miss Cora Ralston for the past three weeks, returned Tuesday to her home in Crookston.”

An article on Tillie Ellingboe’s wedding to William Gilbert, a “well known Great Northern railroad man”, appeared in The Evening Times, later called the Grand Forks Herald, in its 2 Feb 1911 edition. “The bride had been visiting her parents who are spending the winter on a claim near Kelliher for a few weeks and returned to the city unannounced for the marriage ceremony. It was performed Friday evening at the home of her aunt by Rev. T.T. Ove and the happy couple are now cozily settled in apartments in the Rauch block.”

The marriage was recorded in the records of the Crookston United Lutheran church. The witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Austin.

He was still single and claimed exemption on the grounds that he was supporting his mother and father. He is described as of medium height and build wth blue eyes and light hair.

According to the OldRacingCars website, Jules Elllingboe was dirt track champion of Canada in 1918. “He often took part in events at fairgrounds and special occasions.”

In the 1918 city directory for Joliet, Illinois, Jules Ellingboe, machinist, rooms at 205 Cagwin Avenue.

In the 1920 city directory for Memphis, Tennessee, he is Jules Ellingboe, engineer for Ellingboe Motor Corp. He rooms at 897 Nellie Bly.

A headline for the account of a June, 1921, race in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, is “Ellingboe is Probably Fatally Hurt When Machine Overturns at Uniontown.” The article describes how, in an accident in which his car was “thrown up over the track,” Ellingboe’s body was “catapulted out of the car upon the track and rolled down in front of other cars.” Jules had “internal hemorrhages” and “is said to be dying.”

In the 1924 Memphis city directory, he was Jules Ellingboe, representative for Mem Motor Car Co. He lived at 2271 Union Ave.

As Jules Ellingboe, he raced in the Indianapolis 500 six times in the 1920s (’21, ‘22, ‘24, ‘25, ‘26, and ‘27). He finished all 200 laps only once when, in the 1924 race, he finished 11th and won $1,049. In all he raced 362 laps at Indianapolis. He was usually a reserve driver.

He was seriously injured in the 1927 Indianapolis 500 race. He sustained a crushed chest and internal injuries, and, according to some reports, two broken legs. He was injured when his car, the front-wheel drive Cooper Special No. 18, bit the inside of the south turn early in the race, on his 60th mile, and he lost control of his car which pinned him down. Other reports say that he hit the northwest turn wall and overturned.

In the 1928 Memphis directory, he was Jules Ellingboe, auto mechanic, living at 175 Granville Place, apartment 409.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, he was Jules Ellingboe, district representative for Kimball Motor Co. He lives at 32 N 12th.

In the 1937 St. Paul city directory, he was Jules A Ellingboe, salesman, residing at 145 South Chatsworth, apartment 104.

AT the time of his World War II draft registration, he was Jules Arthur Ellingboe of 3522 E Slauson Ave, Maywood, Los Angeles, California. He was employed by Consolidated Steel Corp. The person who would always know his address was H. B. Hoffman, 676 S. Rampart St., Los Angeles.

Ramona Jean Norsving (Bjorson) was born October 2, 1932 in Ortenville, Minnesota to George and Ruth Norsving. She graduated to heaven on May 19, 2020 at age 87. She was at the Villages of Rockville (formerly National Lutheran Home) in Rockville, Maryland.

She lived in Montevideo, Minnesota until after she graduated high school then moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI. She was on the midnight shift which she loved… she was a “night owl”! After working there for a year or so she got a job at O’Boyle’s Tank Lines working for the owner as an Executive Secretary until early 1956.

She went to Augustana Lutheran Church in Washington, D.C. She met Charles August Bjorson while they were singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” in the choir (he sang bass and she soprano). They were married at the church on April 16, 1955. At the time of her death they had been married 65 years.

In February of 1958, they moved to Rockville, Maryland and have been at this house ever since.
They had three (3) children:
Theresa (Terri), Donnaruth, and George Martin

She worked part time as a dental receptionist and a telephone answering service. She also did a lot of community volunteer service positions.

We joined Crusader Lutheran Church in Rockville, MD in 1957. She worked on the council, led Bible Studies, main speaker on women’s retreats and sang in the choir.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws.

In the 1930 Minneapolis city directory, he is John L Ellingboe, an artist for the Bureau of Engraving. He and Margaret live at 2555 Bryant Avenue S.

John and Margaret were renting an apartment at 2555 Bryant Avenue S. in Minneapolis at the time of the 1930 census. John L. Jr. is listed (age zero) but Mary Margaret is not. John is 25, Margaret is 21. They were married at ages 22 and 19, respectively. All three are shown as having been born in Minnesota. Both of Margaret’s parents were born in Norway. John’s mother was born in Norway but his father was born in Wisconsin. John’s occupation is shown as artist in the engraving or engineering industry. Margaret has no occupation listed. (She would have just graduated from St. Olaf.)

The Ellingboes’ address is simply 26th and Bryant on Mary Margaret’s birth certificate.

John, Margaret, and 17 month-old John visited Europe in 1931. They arrived back in the U.S. in New York on April 16th aboard the S.S. Lafayette which had departed Le Havre, France, on April 8th. All three of them were travelling under U.S. passport 313558. Their address in the U.S. was Northfield, Minnesota.

In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, he was an artist for Augsburg Publishing House. He and Margaret lived at 5329 35th Avenue S.

He was listed in the 1933 Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition with a woodcut, Saint Luke.

In the 1935 and 1936 Minneapolis city directories, he was an artist for Augsburg Publishing House. He and Margaret lived at 129 E 56th.

In the 1938 Minneapolis directory, he is still an artist with Augsburg. He resides in Robbinsdale.

His work at Ausburg included illustrating Sunday School textbooks and other publications for children, including The Boy Who Fought with Kings, A Life of Martin Luther, and Little Koto, A Boy of Madagascar.

Inthe 1940 census, he and his family live in Robbinsdale. John was a college graduate, Margaret claimed two years of college. John was the art director for a publishing house. They owned their house, worth $5500, at 3363 France Avenue. (He gave the address as 3263 France in his draft registration on 16 Oct 1940.)

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was a commercial artist at 423 5th Avenue S. He resided at RD 4, Richfield.

They lived at 7806 S 78th Street in Bloomington at the time the engagement of their son to Sonya was announced in September of 1951.

In the 1958 Glendale city directory, he was an advertising artist. He and Margaret lived at 4661 Lowell Avenue.

A November, 1959, article in the Star had him in Hollywood, California.

He designed the altar cross in the little chapel in Agnes Melby Hall at St. Olaf College in Northfield. He also did the painting of the St. Olaf woman guided by the spirit of Christ which hangs in the chapel.

According to the Minneapolis city directory, John Ellingboe was employed as an artist by The Bureau of Engraving, “a large Twin Cities printing company,” according to Crump’s Minnesota Prints and Printmakers. By the late 1930s, he was at Augsburg Publishing.

A Helen Ellingboe attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and was a member of the Beta Phi Alpha fraternity in the class of 1928.

She is probably the “Hellen G.”, age 24, single schoolteacher, living in Winnebago County, Iowa, in the 1930 census.

Helen Geneva Schiotz, 98, Ladysmith, died April 9, 2004, at Ladysmith of pneumonia after an illness of six days.

She was born on July 7, 1905, in Rice County, Minn., the daughter of O. B. and Esther Ellingboe.

She had lived in Iowa three years, Tony six years, Cameron for two years and the balance at Ladysmith.

She and Harold Schiotz were married in 1933, at Fairbault, Minn. He preceded her in death.

She was involved with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Hospital and Nursing Home Auxiliary volunteers, Rusk County Historical Society, and Kinship of Rusk County.

She belonged to Hope Lutheran Church, Ladysmith, and was a lifelong devoted member of the Hope Lutheran Women's Club, and belonged to the Eastern Star.

She was a loving mother and grandmother to seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She devoted her life to her family, church and community.

Survivors include a son, Dave (Karen) Schiotz of Menomonie; two daughters, Randy (Bernie) Von Wald of Lindstrom, Minn., and Bev (Mike) Thom of Madison; seven grandchildren, Kristi Stout, Duke Von Wald, Starcey Arco, Jenny Grooms, Andy Grooms, Mark Schiotz and Matt Schiotz; and six great grandchildren;

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Cloyde Ellingboe.

Funeral services were on Tuesday, April 13, at Hope Lutheran Church with Pastors Dick Klabunde and Ed Zaiser officiating and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Ladysmtih.

Nash-Jackan Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Claude Soine, 94, a longtime Wildrose resident, lately of Minot, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

His memorial service will be held Tuesday morning, Feb. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Wildrose. Pastoral Assistant Kathy Paulson will officiate and interment of the cremated remains will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Ray in the spring.

Claude Vernon Soine was born on March 6, 1914, to Alfred and Sneva "Lula" (Nygaard) Soine. He was raised and educated in Ray and graduated from Ray High School in 1934.

Claude married Adelle Larson of Ray on Feb. 19, 1940, in Seattle, Wash. They eventually made their home in Wildrose.

Following high school, he worked at Fort Peck Dam in Montana, Washington, Corinth and Wildrose. He was owner/operator of the Wildrose Bar for several years. He later became manager for the Farmers Union Oil Company until he retired at the age of 65. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1945.

He was a member of the Ray Lutheran Church until transferring his membership to Grace Lutheran Church of Wildrose in 1963.

Claude was active in the American Legion, serving at one time as commander and as post commander. He was active in the Masons in Wildrose and later in Ray. Claude was also a member of the Elks Lodge, a lifetime member of the Volunteer Fire Department of North Dakota, the Lions Club and the Williston Moose. He belonged to the Commercial Club in Wildrose, organized by the businesses in Wildrose. Claude also was involved in the design and maintenance of the Wildrose golf course.

Claude enjoyed golfing, dancing, playing cards, sports, hunting, fishing and reading.

Claude is survived by his sons, Terry (Rita) of Thief River Falls, Minn. and David (Susan) of Seabeck, Wash.; daughters, Judy (Terry) Halgrimson of Minot, Jane Soine (Joe Ewing) of Grand Junction, Colo., and Nancy (Jack) Kahl of Rapid City, S.D.; a special friend and companion, Ruby Melland of Williston; sisters, Muriel Meredith and Margaret Michaud, both of Washington; a sister-in-law, Donalda Tuttle, also of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Capturing the spirit of Allene Reich Robson in a few words is an impossible task. Quiet and unassuming, she nonetheless engaged fully with life from her first breath to her last, with myriad interests and a heart full of love. To describe her as a mother and homemaker and the person who managed the payroll for the family business doesn't begin to represent her. For decades, she enhanced church choirs with her beautiful voice, in addition to singing (and whistling) around the house, and also sang in a barbershop group. She didn't just sew; she quilted and tailored. She didn't just garden; she donated years of service to the Chicago Botanic Garden and, after moving to Washington in 1994, coordinated and hosted the Olympic Manor Garden Club sale, which provided scholarships for horticultural students at Edmonds Community College. She belonged to, and was an officer, in PEO, a philanthropic organization that supports women's education, aspirations, and achievement. Years of participating in Know Your Chicago programs, sponsored by the University of Chicago, gave her a wide and deep view of social issues, about which she cared profoundly. As a deacon at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ballard, she accepted a variety of responsibilities, small and large. Always open to learning, she unfailingly characterized her accomplishments as nothing special.

Born in Moravia, Iowa, Allene experienced the lows of the Depression with a family that blew out of the Oklahoma dust bowl to land in Taos, New Mexico, where they began to build a new life. Taos remained important in the family narrative, and in 2008, Allene and her older sister, Virginia Reich Martin, made a trip to Taos with their daughters. From Taos the family moved to Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where they established a restaurant called the Log Cabin Inn and later a lumberyard. After high school, she graduated from Colorado College with a degree in business affairs, money, and banking (her father's choice: she later said she would have loved to have been a children's librarian). Her background in practical matters, along with her Depression experiences, gave her the ability to manage money in two family businesses and for the household. She understood stocks as well as apples, and how to choose good ones in both cases.

Her children and grandchildren knew her as a reliable source of unconditional love, clear and thoughtful and accepting in a way that let them know she perceived their greatest potential, whether it had been manifested yet or not. We will miss her so much.

The daughter of Herschel Willard Reich and Louella Bertine Ellingboe Reich, Allene married William Wallace Robson, Jr., in 1947, and they celebrated 58 years of marriage before he died in 2005. She is survived by two daughters, Deborah Robson and Meg Robson Mahoney, her son-in-law Jake Mahoney, and three grandchildren, Rebekah Robson-May, Corey Caitlin Mahoney, and Conor Robson Mahoney. She was born April 6, 1922 in Minneapolis, MN to Elmer S. and Mildred Hjortland. Elaine spent her early years in Eau Claire and Milwaukee WI, where her father served as a Lutheran pastor. She attended St. Olaf College, graduating in 1943 in Speech Communications. She met her husband, Pastor Jennings Feroe in 1943 while playing ping pong at Lake Geneva Bible Camp, where Jennings had brought members of his congregation from Long Lake, IL.

They were married on January 21, 1945 in Milwaukee. After the end of WWII they moved to Mankato, MN where Jennings accepted a call to Bethlehem Lutheran Church. After 28 years of shared ministry in Mankato, they moved to Northfield, MN when Jennings took a job in the Development Office at St. Olaf College. During her years in Northfield, Elaine worked at St. Olaf College and St. John’s Lutheran Church. A competitive spirit, she enjoyed golfing for many years and played bridge into her 90’s. She was known for her generous gift giving, delivering a humorous speech, and getting things done-whether in the family, as a pastor’s wife or in various leadership roles over her lifetime.

She and Jennings moved to the Northfield Retirement Center in 2002 and enjoyed being active members of this special community. The family wishes to thank the NRC staff and her friends for their support and care over the many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Mark, brothers Bud and John and great granddaughter Serenity. She is survived by her children Mary (Ted) Hovey of Roseville, Bruce (Kathy) Feroe of Hoyt Lakes , Lois (Roger) Tinker of Coon Rapids and Ellen (Rick) Hedrick of St. Paul ; 6 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren.

John Gordon Hjortland, 78, of Northfield and a former Oak Park resident, died peacefully at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community.

Born on Feb. 27, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was adopted by Elmer and Mildred (Ellingboe) Hjortland as an infant. Growing up, he lived in Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, and Oak Park, graduating from Oak Park and River Forest High School with the class of 1956. John furthered his education at St. Olaf College.

He later returned to Chicago to work for Red Owl Foods and went on to work as a respiratory therapist for 37 years, most of this time spent at St. Luke's Presbyterian and Rush Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He retired in 2000.

A former member of Oak Park's United Lutheran Church where he lived and worked as the church caretaker for 15 years, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, especially going fishing with his nephew.

John Hjortland is survived by his sister, Elaine Feroe; his nephews, Bruce (Kathy) Feroe and David (Debra) Hjortland; his nieces, Lois (Roger) Tinker and Mary (Ted) Hovey; his sister-in-law, Mona Hjortland Lund; six great-nieces; and other relatives and friends. John Gordon Hjortland was born on February 27, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As an infant he was adopted by Elmer and Mildred (Ellingboe) Hjortland. John was baptized at Ascension Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, WI and confirmed in his faith at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Growing up John lived in Milwaukee, Minneapolis and lastly Chicago, where John graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School with the class of 1956. John furthered his education at St. Olaf College. He later returned to Chicago to work for Red Owl Foods. John went on to work as a respiratory therapist for 37 years, most of this time was spent at St. Luke’s Presbyterian and Rush Memorial Hospital in Chicago, retiring in 2000. Following retirement John remained in the Chicago area until moving to Northfield in 2010.

John was a former member of United Lutheran Church in Oak Park, Illinois, where he lived and worked as the church caretaker for 15 years. He was a big Chicago sports fan, he especially enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs. John enjoyed singing in the church choir. He was an avid car fan as he was race car driver for some time driving. A 57’ Chevy was his favorite. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends, especially going fishing with his nephew.

John is survived by his sister Elaine Feroe of Northfield; nephews: Bruce (Kathy) Feroe of Hoyt Lakes, David (Debra) Hjortland of North Oaks, MN; nieces: Lois (Roger) Tinker of Coon Rapids and Mary (Ted) Hovey of Roseville; sister-in-law, Mona Hjortland Lund of Northwood, ND; and 6 great nieces, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Elmer Jr. “Bud” and Beverly Rasmusson.

On Tuesday Evening, May 17, 2016, John passed away peacefully at the Care Center of the Northfield Retirement Community reaching the age of 78.

John “Jack” Ellingboe, 93, passed December 31, 2022, in Sea Ranch, California. He loved being a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all he met.

He was a natural leader, yet a quiet man, with enormous gifts that will leave an imprint on this world, and many hearts, for years to come.

He was an intellect, receiving a B.S. in Chemistry and Physics from St. Olaf College in Northfield (1947), Minnesota, earning a PhD in Chemistry from Iowa State University (1956), and then earned the position of Associate Research Director of Refining and Marketing at the Marathon Oil research lab (1956-1986). Daily, he enjoyed beating the clock while solving daily newspaper puzzles, sudoku, and crosswords until his final days.

He was a community steward, serving the Littleton, Colorado, community for over 20 years on various boards as council member and mayor pro tempore, being the Colorado president of the American Chemical Society, an serving on the Arapahoe Community College board.

He was an organizer, setting up score keeping for his daughter’s synchronized swim meets, partnered with Priss to sell yarn (1986-2006), sorting clothing for a charity boutique, and instructing those who wanted to learn bridge.

He was an adventurer, whether rafting down a river, soaring high over the landscape in a hot-air balloon (1982-1992), crossing America as part of the Columbus Discovering America event (1992), or walk the redwood trails of California, he loved life. When young, he adored the game of football and later rooting-on his favorite teams. After moving to California, he learned to ride bicycles and often joined Priss on her daily trips to the swimming pool.

He was a creative, designing gardens, making jewelry, or doodling on any available notepad.

Mostly, he was an everyday hero, offering a smile and wave to anyone who walked by, supporter of small business, and gracious giver of his time.

In the last years, Jack endured many health issues but was an eternal optimist always looking to make the “big comeback.” Despite his challenges, music continued to be a lifelong comfort and enjoyed tapping his fingers along to any snappy jazz tune.

His body may have given out but his spirit remained stubbornly strong and, as in life, he died his way.

Jack is survived by his wife, Priss, of 39 years, his children John, Kirsten, Karen, Bruce, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and Priss’s daughter Ann.

In lieu of a traditional memorial service, Jack has requested a small donation gift sent to a local charity.

Ruth Helen (Biddie) Christenson, age 87, of Laporte MN, passed away on August 17th, with her family by her side.

Biddie was a member of the Leech Lake Art Association for over 25 years, and was also a member of the Kabekona Lake Association, Kabekona Singers, and the Hope Lutheran Church choir. Her ever present smile will be missed by all who knew her.

She leaves behind children, Berit (Ric) Allison, Todd (Cally) Christenson, grandchildren Kit Christenson, Lucas (Brit) Christenson, Chris (Linda) Reed, and three great grandchildren; Avery and Isla Reed, and Njorth Lee Christenson.

He retired from Diesel Technology of Kentwood as a manufacturing engineer in the field of tool engineering. He was a member of Second Reformed Church in Grand Haven where he served as a deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; children, William and Shelly Ellingboe of Spring Lake, Peter and Brenda Ellingboe of Holland, and Paul Ellingboe of Grand Haven; three grandchildren; a brother, W.L. and Marie Ellingboe of Ferrysburg; a sister- and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Richard Peel of Spring Lake, and Peter and Mary Ann Floto of Washington, D.C.

Lois Mae Haworth, 96, of Fargo, ND, died December 25, 2022 at SMP - St. Catherine’s South in Fargo under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Lois Mae Page was born May 1, 1926 in Northfield, MN, and was the oldest of seven children (five brothers and one sister).

Lois grew up in Northfield. After high school, she worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Her best friend, who worked with her, set her up on a blind date, who then became her husband. George and Lois were married and had two daughters, Barbara and Beverly. After moving to Fargo, she worked as a switchboard operator at St. Luke’s Hospital in the business office. She continued to work for 20-plus years and then retired when the hospital became MeritCare.

Lois loved cooking, baking, and especially gardening. Lois and George were longtime members of Faith United Methodist Church. They often traveled with their good friends in retirement.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Elanor and John Page; husband, George; daughter, Barbara Davis; brothers, Rodger (June), Percy (Lois), LeRoy (Marie) and Don Page.

Mary Reda Mary Fran (Orris) Reda, 57, passed away June 8th after a brave but brief struggle with liver cancer. She leaves on earth her daughters Christal Pittman and Natalia Reda (Jimmy), their dad Leo Reda, granddaughter Grace, mother and stepfather Bernice and Bill Whitney, brother Patrick Orris (Debbie) and sister Sandy Cunningham, along with numerous friends and family.
