EmiHamn has him returning to the U.S. in 1926. Presumably he had been there on a visit. He departed from Göteborg on 14 Aug 1926, bound for New York. The New York passenger lists show him and Nellie arriving in New York on 23 Aug aboard the Drottningholm.

Nellie is a widow in the 1936 Minneapolis city directory but is shown as secretary-treasurer of Challman and Co., Inc., located at 1300 S 3rd. Her son Willard E is the president. The business is advertised as machine blacksmiths, welders, forging, tool works, and ornamental iron works.

Ernest’s business was still operating in 2016, now at 2900 14th Ave S. and now a supplier, perhaps a maker, of anchor bolts and tie rods. Ernest’s old sign from when the business was downtown hangs outside the business’s new location. George Baldwin in the president.

Ernest married Nellie PETERSON about 1900. Nellie (daughter of GUSTAFSON) was born on 4 Nov 1875 in Sweden; died on 11 May 1964 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In the 1936 city directory, he and Edith live at 3644 16th Avenue S.

They are still there in the 1940 census. It’s a rented residence. Willard is the manager of an iron works company and Edith is a public school teacher, currently not employed.

He and his wife lived at 3644 S. 16th Avenue at the time that their son Roger married Janice Helseth in 1958.

His obit in the Star on 20 Jun 1961 said that he was 59, lived at 3644 S. 16th Av. and was head of the Challman Co., steel fabricators. He had been a lifelong resident of Minneapolis and was a member of the Minnehaha Masonic Lodge 165, Scottish Rite.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota in its class of 1928. She was a member of its Phi Mu sorority.

In the 1930 census, she may be the 25 year-old public school teacher Mildred Challman living in Barnum in Carlton County, Minnesota.

The 1936 Minneapolis city directory includes her, showing her as a teacher living with her mother at 3815 Columbus.

In the 1940 census, she may be the 35 year-old Mildred Challman, a mathematcs teacher, living in Fairmont, Minnesota, in Martin County. In 1935, she had lived in St. James, Watonwan County.

She visited Sweden in the summer of 1949. At that time she lived in Monroe, Michigan.

In her brother’s obit, she is referred to as Mrs. Robert Mead of Arlington, Virginia.

She and Robertson had three childen in Hennepin County between 1958 and 1961.

In her father’s obit, she is Mrs. Donald E. Robertson of Eden Prairie.

Robertson, Elisabeth (Challman) age 80, of Golden Valley, passed away on Sept. 6, 2008. Preceded in death by parents, Willard and Edith Challman. Survived by loving husband of 58 years, Donald; children, Scott (Jackie Swenson), Mary, and Lisa Roeder (Ashley); grandchildren, Todd and Bryan Robertson, Andrew and Benjamin Lawonn; brother, Roger (Jan) Challman; niece, Laurie (Joel) Rude; and many friends. Elisabeth grew up in Mpls., graduated from Roosevelt High School and Macalester College. She lived in Eden Prairie and Edina. Elisabeth loved their home on Lake Ossawinnamakee. She and Don moved to Covenant Village in 2004. Many heartfelt thanks to Dr. George Morrison and the caregivers at Colonial Acres.
