From "History of the Chippewa Valley Wisconsin" published by A. Warner, Publisher, Chicago, Illinois, 1891-2:
John Fleming, a farmer at Pepin, the eldest of the children of James Fleming and Sarah (Everett) Fleming, was born at Bethlehem, Pa., and attended the district school a part of the time until nineteen years old. He came to Pepin with his parents in 1855 and began to work at twenty-one years of age as a farm laborer. Soon after he began supplying steamboats with cord wood. He was married August 21, 1862, to Miss Mary J., daughter of Aaron and Mary (Brown) Littell. Mrs. Fleming was born at Presque Isle, Mich., September 26, 1848. They have had ten children, namely: William H. born August 13, 1863, Milton E., May 23, 1865, John F., December 10, 1866, died December 13, 1867; Clara J. (Mrs. G. Wheeler), September 8, 1868, Eugene Bert, February 3, 1871, Effie May, May 24, 1873; Truman, February 20, 1875, James C., May 11, 1879, Arminda I., June 8, 1883, and Sherman A., May 10, 1886. In 1862, Mr. Fleming bought a farm in section seventeen, and in 1876 another where he now resides on section twenty, township twenty-three, range fourteen, and now owns 410 acres, all in a good state of cultivation. He has begun breeding short-horn cattle and Poland China hogs. He makes a specialty of dealing in cord-wood, ties, etc. He is a noted hunter and sportsman and has killed more deer than any other man in the southern part of Pepin county. Mr. Fleming is a Republican in politics and is giving his children the advantage of a good education.

John Fleming: Who is now living retired on his farm of 160 acres in Section 19, Pepin township, Pepin county, was born in Bethlehem, Penn., March 23, 1840, son of James and Susan (Pence) Fleming. He was a boy of 15 when he set out with his parents for the West, they settling on land in Pepin township in 1855.
Until he was 19 years old, he attended district school for a part of the time, but being the eldest child in the family, and for some years the only one able to be of service, as several had died in infancy, he was his father's chief assistant in helping to clear and cultivate the parental acres.
At the age of 21, he began working out as a farm laborer and was thus employed until 1862, during which time he resided at home. In the year last mentioned, he bought a farm in Section 19, Pepin township, and having married, began domestic life. From time to time he purchased more land until by 1876, he was the owner of 410 acres, and was successfully engaged in general farming and stock raising, breeding short-horn cattle and Poland-China hogs. In that work he continued until 1914, since which time has lived retired.
During his active career, he served as a member of the town and school boards, on which he rendered efficient service, working for the best interests of the community in which he lived and endeavored to improve the educational facilities of his school district. In politics, he is a Republican and he is a member of the Methodist Church in Pepin.
On August 21, 1862, John Fleming was united in marriage with Mary J. Littell, daughter of Aaron and Mary (Brown) Littell. She was born at Presque Isle, Michigan, September 26, 1848, and died in 1912. Of this union, ten children were born.
It will thus be seen that Mr. Fleming has eight living children and 28 grandchildren. On July 31, 1915, he married for his second wife, Mrs. Christina Siefert, daughter of David Hetrich of Nelson township, Buffalo County, Wisconsin, where in her girlhood she attended district school. Her mother is deceased, but her father is still living. Mrs. Christina Fleming died in 1917, and in August 1918, Mr. Fleming married for his third wife, Mrs. Jennie Gates of Arkansas, Wisconsin, daughter of Jacob S. and Margaret McCourtie, who came to Pepin from New York State and settled in Dead Lake Prairie, Waterville Township, in 1855 or 1856.
OBITUARY: John Fleming, eldest son of James and Susan (Pence) Fleming was born in Bethlehem, Penn., March 23, 1840 and died at Pepin, Wis. October 20, 1922, having reached the age of 82 years, 6 months and 27 days.
At the age of 15 years, he moved with his parents to Pepin, where he resided until his death. He was married in 1862 to Mary Jane Littell, who preceded him in death in 1913. To this union ten children were born namely: William H., now of Billings, Mont., Effie May (Mrs. O.L. Fuller) of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Truman of Glenwood City; Milton E., E. Burton, Clara J. (Mrs. G.M. Wheeler), Arminda L (Mrs. G.H. Barnes), Sherman A, all of Pepin; John Franklin, who died in 1867, and James Clinton, who died October 20, 1908. In 1915, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Christina (Hetrick) Seifert who died in 1917. In 1918 he married Mrs. Jennie Gates Ganoe, who with one sister, Eliza A. (Mrs. F. Dunn) of Wabasha, Minnesota survive. The three daughters and five sons, thirty grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren survive him. Preceding him in death in his immediate family besides his father and mother were 3 sisters and two brothers, namely: Nancy J., Elizabeth, Sarah E and Thomas M in 1845 and Milton in 1920.
