Jim’s VS notes:

He lived in different places in Vang before he settled in Ljøsno under Tveit around 1860. Frøholm writes that he had built a cabin on Slettefjell where he tended sheep in the fall. He broke into Mugnadstølen and stole butter.

A poem was composed about him: "Han Anfinn og han Ola i Bakka efter Tjuve-bruna lokka" He was divorced around 1845. After that he lived with Guri Sjugurdsdtr Remmisbrekkun and had five children with her.

In 1864 he traveled to America with his son Torstein, the documents also state that the eldest son Ola was involved, but in the census in 1865 he is listed with his grandfather.

It is possible that he joined his mother, who traveled in 1865 with his daughters and youngest son. When Guri left, their house burned down. It was called "Hell" and people then said that when "Fa'n" raised fire Hell. (After Frøholm).

Anfinn was later married and divorced and had a son Ola in 1853 with Guri Sjugurdsdatter Remmisbrekka. Ola was also with his grandfather in the 1865 census. After a time he was in Ljøsne in Tveidt.

In the 1885 Minnesota census, he was Gullick A. Rude. He and his family lived in Webster Twp, Rice County. Annie (called Annie Gullickson) is still alive. Jørgen is not listed with the rest of the family.

In the 1895 Minnesota census, he was Gullik Rudi. He and his family lived in Webster Twp. A daughter “Anbjur”, age 18, appears for the first time but she is probably George’s wife (#20839). Other children living at home with Gullk and Ingeborg in this census were Jurgen, Anders, and Knut.

Living with her are Bella Ellingboe, 27, Halvor Austin, 22, Hendriete Johnson, 17, Johan Johnson, 15, and Klara Ellingboe, 10. {??} Mary and her family are Lutheran. Bella is a dressmaker. Halvor is shown as subject to military duty and entitled to vote. Johan did not attend school in 1894.

In the 1900 census, she is Mary Ellingbo, still in Springfield Twp, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She is a divorcee and her three youngest children Halvor, Henrietta, and John are living with her. She has had 11 children, 7 still alive. She came to the U.S. in 1861.

She is I8325 in Jim’s Ellingboe tree revised on 24 Feb 2012. Jim shows no parents for her.

In his notes for her in that tree, Jim says: “She is probably the daughter of Knut Iverson Eltun and Gjertrud Thomasdotter Eltun. Knut moved to Bøkkadn (33/3) on N. Ellingbøe in 1868. Gjertrud's mother was Sigrid Ivarsdotter Kjerstein (1805-1879). Eltun is next to Kjerstein and there were many connections between the families. If she is this person, she would have been born 17 Apr 1863 and baptized 26 Apr 1863.”

She is not listed in Jim’s VS, either as Thrond’s wife or as Torstein Torsteinsen’s daughter.

Jim’s attribution of parentage to Knut and Gjertrud is not consistent with Anna’s 1884 marriage record to Thrond in which she is shown as Anna Thostensen Kjersten, age 20. It is also not consistent with the birth record for Anna and Thrond’s first child born in Maynard on 13 Jan 1886. In that Wang Lutheran Church record, the child’s mother is clearly shown to be “Anne T. Kjerstine.”

The parentage shown here is consistent with the birth record of the Anna born in Vestre Slidre (p.87, Vestre Slidre prestekontor 1856-1864). The farm name of that Anna’s father is something like Risiskeiet. That is consistent with Tosten Tostensen being on the Rusiskaaret farm in Vestre Slidre in the 1865 census. The bygdebok (Vang A, p. 239) shows that Tosten, son of Tosten Ivarsson Kjerstein, married Randi and left for Vestre Slidre in 1860.

Called Anna Thompson in MOMS when she married Trond in 1884. Called Anna Thostensen Kjerstein in the ELCA record (Our Savior’s in Sacred Heart) for that marriage.

Emigrated in 1867 according to the 1900 census. At that time she was 37 and a widow living with her family on a farm in Wang Township, Renville County. The household consisted of Anna, 37 (b. Mar 1863), Trond, 14 (b. Jun 1886 in Minnesota), Dina, 10 (b.. Jun 1889), Theodor, 8 (b. Oct 1891), Christine, 5 (b. Mar 1895), and Ida H., 2 (b. June 1897).

A 1913 land ownership map of Wang Twp, Renville County, shows that she owned an 80 acre parcel in or near the village or community of New Lisbon. Her parcel is contiguous and made up of the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter and the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9.

In the 1920 census, as “Mrs. Tom,” she was keeping house for her single, 27 year-old son Theodore in Tioga Twp, Williams County, North Dakota. She was shown, probably erroneously, as 63 years old.

Living with Helen and Helen’s husband at the time of the 1930 census. In that census, she was indicated as having come to this country in 1866.

In the 1940 census, she lived in Stoneham Twp, Chippewa County, with her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and William Kramer, in the same house in which they all had lived five years earlier. Anna had a fifth-grade education.

She died from pernicious anemia.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Vang Lutheran Church for Ole O. Hagen, 78 year old resident of Dennison. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Burial was in the Vang cemetery. Mr. Hagen, who had been in poor health for the past two years, was stricken with a heart attack shortly before noon Saturday, July 3. He made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Kasa. Ole O. Hagen, son of Ole and Marit Hagen, was born in Warsaw Township, (Goodhue County) July 12, 1876 and had spent his entire life in this community. He farmed in the Sogn area for many years and also operated a treshing machines when custom threshing was in order. He moved to Dennison 32 years ago and engaged in trucking and built the garage which now is used as the Hagen Garage. He was married August 7, 1903, at Red Wing to Tina Flom who preceded him in death several years ago. Surviving are two sons and one daughter: Delmar Hagen of Rochester; Oscar of Dennison; Mrs. Maurice (Mary Ann) Kasas of Dennison, two brothers, George and Christ of Northfield. Three brothers are dead, Erick, Martin and Edwin. One sister, Malia, died when eight years old. Three grandchildren are living and one died several years ago. Pallbearers were: Oscar Hellerud, Ole Prestegaard, Philip G. Hauge, Iver E. Ellingboe, Atle Gjerlow and Edwin K. Haugen. Mrs. Blikstad sang "Den Store Hvide Flok" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. Cyrus Midje at the organ.

Funeral services were conducted at the Vang Lutheran Church, Tuesday, July 21, at 2 p.m. for Chris O. Hagen, 78, by the Rev. B. J. Blikstad, pastor of the parish. Mrs. Blikstad sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Forbil Hos Mig" accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midje, the church organist. The pallbearers were James Haugen, Glenn Hagen, George Hagen, Delmar Hagen, Harold Hagen and Maurice Hagen. He was laid to rest in the Vang Cemetery. Chris O. Hagen, son of Ole E. Hagen and Mary Bakken Hagen, was born March 10, 1886, near Sogn in Warsaw Township, Goodhue County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Urland Lutheran Church. In 1911, he was married to Anna Haugen, who survives him. One daughter, Florence, died in childhood. Hagen spent most of his life in or near Dennison until they moved to Northfield in 1947. He was employed at Carleton College until his retirement. In 1962 they moved to St. Paul. He died at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul Saturday evening, July 18, at the age of 78 years. Besides his widow, Anna, he is survived by one brother, George Hagen of Northfield, five sisters and seven nephews.

Rudy, well known Forest township farmer, who passed away late Friday, July 27, at the Northfield Hospital, were held Monday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church, with the Rev. B. A. Benson officiating. Sever and Gilbert Dalby, Oscar Nelson, Clarence Camp, Gus Lockrem and Peter Paulson were pallbearers. Interment was in Northfield Cemetery. Mrs. Olaf Skramstad sang "I Know of A Sleep in Jesus' Name," and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Professor Carl Abrahamson at the services. Relatives and a large number of friends attended the service. Mr. Rudy had been a patient sufferer with arthritis for 12 years. He was born in Valders, Norway, April 3, 1875, to Ingeborg and Gullick Rudy and came to the United States when he was two years old. He had lived in Forest township most of his life. He was married to Miss Boletta Dalby who survives him. One daughter, Mrs. Clement Fabre (Cora) of St. Paul, also survives. A nephew, Edwin Rudy, has lived with the family since babyhood. One sister, Mrs. Anna Clark of Washington state is living, while a sister, Mrs. Mary Camp, and two brothers, George and Andrew Rudy, have preceded him in death.

In a 1913 land ownership atlas of Wang Twp in Renville County, “T. T. Ellingboe” owned two separate parcels in or near the village or community of New Lisbon. It’s likely that both parcels were owned by Tom. The two parcels were separated by an 80 acre parcel owned by his mother, Annie Ellingboe. Tom’s two parcels were: 1) a 120 acre parcel made up of the southern half of the southeast quarter-section and the southwestern quarter of the southeastern quarter of Section 4, and 2) the southern half of the northeast quarter-section of Section 9.

Registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Olivia as Thrond T. Ellingboe of Route #1, Maynard. He was born January 13, 1886, and he was a farmer. Oscar Hagen, 91, of Northfield and formerly of Sogn and Dennison, died Monday, Sept. 25, 1995, at Three Links Care Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1904, to Ole O. and Tina (Flom) Hagen on his familys farm near Sogn in rural Goodhue County. As he grew up, he helped with the farm chores and later attended the country school near their farm. Following school he began to work full time with his father, helping with the farm and dairy chores and driving the milk route, picking up the canned milk from farms and delivering it to the condensary for processing. They also did general truck hauling, picking up and delivering freight and other large items. In 1922, the Hagen family moved into Dennison to operate the trucking and milk route full time. He and his father often played with an old-time band, Hagen on the guitar and his father on the violin. Hagen later owned and operated the Hagen Garage in Dennison with his brother Delmer. The garage serviced autos and other gas-engine machines. Hagen had to stop working at the garage in the late 1960s due to his loss of sight. He continued to live in Dennison until moving to Northfield in 1972. Survivors include his brother, Delmer (and Alma) Hagen of Zumbrota; nieces Teresa Bellis of Grand Forks, N.D., and Karen Youkin of Minneapolis; and nephew Adrian Hagen of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maryann Kasa. Services were held Thursday, Sept. 28, at Bierman Funeral Home, the Rev. Gerald Gengenbach of the Dennison and Vang Lutheran Churches officiating. Pallbearers were Adrian and David Hagen, Albert Remme and Helge Kasa. Interment is at Vang Cemetery in rural Dennison.

Glenn Hagen, age 76, of Northfield died April 19, 2003, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, the Rev. Donald Bakken officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Glenn O. Hagen was born Aug. 22, 1926, to George and Inga (Ellerud) Hagen in Faribault. He grew up in Dennison and graduated from Northfield High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948 aboard a repair ship in Japan and China. On May 8, 1949, he married Jean Stechman in Zumbrota. They made their first home in Northfield and then farmed in High Prairie for 12 years, later establishing an Arabian horse farm. Along with farming, he worked for Union 76 delivering fuel. He built and operated the Caravan Motel in Cannon Falls prior to retiring and moving to Northfield in 1987. He was a member of the VFW, Northfield. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Mary (David) Anderson of Prior Lake, and Jan (Doug) Rechzigel of Cannon Falls; and two grandchildren, Angela and Justin Rechtizgel. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Ellingson. Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society for research. Arrangements are with Lundberg Funeral Home, Cannon Falls.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 16, at Hawk Creek Lutheran Church in rural Sacred Heart.??Arleen Rubell Hegna was born May 25, 1918 to Thrond and Emily (Opdahl) Ellingboe on her parents’ home farm in Wang Township, Renville County near Maynard. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard. She was an active member of the Luther League, superintendent of the Sunday school for several years, taught high school Bible classes, Vocational Bible School and also served as the organist for several years. She served as president of the Rock Valle Circuit Lutheran Daughters of Reformation and as an active member in Wang Lutheran Daughters of Reformation.??Arleen attended Hillcrest District #44 Country School and graduated from the Maynard High School. After high school, she attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

On September 30, 1950, Arleen was united in marriage to William Hegna at the Wang Lutheran Church.??She was an active member of Hawk Creek Lutheran Church serving as assistant organist for a number of years, member of WELCA and Magdaline Circle, teaching Sunday school and Vocational Bible School, and Luther League advisor along with her husband. She studied and read the Bible daily (her favorite verses are in Psalm 121). She also sang in the choir for many years. Her favorite hymns were: What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Beautiful Savior, Breathe on Me Breath of God, and Bless This House, O Lord We Pray. Arleen was also a member of the Valdres Samband, the Elvidal 509 Sons of Norway, and the Granite Falls Farmers Union Local.??She was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arleen enjoyed embroidery, quilting, sewing, cooking, canning, singing, baking, listening to her tapes, the radio and visiting with her family and friends.


She is survived by her children: Paula (Bruce) Iverson, Orlynn (Carol) Hegna, Jeannette Agre, Marcene (Roger) Lerud, and Rolland (RaeAnn) Hegna; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Joan Hildahl, Adeline Ellingboe, Mabel Johnson and Lois Hegna; and many nieces and nephews.??She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William; brothers: Eugene, Ellsworth and Marvin Ellingboe and a grandson, Lars Iverson.??Arrangements are with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Granite Falls.

Ellworth Odell 'Fats' Ellingboe, 80, of Granite Falls died Friday at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in Granite Falls.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Granite Falls and for one hour prior to services at the church.

He was born May 22, 1926, in Montevideo to Thrönd and Emily (Opdahl) Ellingboe. He attended Maynard High School and graduated in 1944.

After high school, he farmed with several local farmers until entering the Army in 1946. After attending basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., he was assigned to the 32nd Infantry, 7th Division, and served in Korea. Upon returning from Korea, he farmed with his brothers Gene and Marvin.

On Nov. 10, 1951, he married Delores Jean "Babe" Day, at the Wang Lutheran Church. He lived and worked in Woodlake, Appleton, and later in Granite Falls, where he owned and managed Standard Oil until 1969. He worked for Brown's Auto and A&J Auto until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and served as a member of the VFW/Legion Honor Guard.

He is survived by two daughters: LeeAnn (and Joe) Randall of Nashville, Tenn., and Sheila (and Wallace) Thompson, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons: Tom (and Diane) Ellingboe, of Blaine, and Brian (and Elizabeth) Ellingboe, of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister: Arlene Hegna of Granite Falls; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a son: James Ellingboe; and his brothers.

He was killed when the combine he was working on slipped off its jack and fell on him. He had been trying to repair an oil leak.
