She is Jørand Torsteinsdatter Lome, I19667, in Jim’s VS. Jim has her mistakenly born in Lome.

dwfrench1 calls her Jørand Tostensdatter Kjorlien.

In the 1900 census, she had had 5 children, all still living. She came to the U.S. in 1869.

Julia died of pneumonia. Her usual residence at the time she died was 624 East Granite, Granite Falls, which was not a farm. She had been in Granite Falls for 30 years. The informant for her death certificate was Mrs. Erland Knutson.

Jørand married Halvor LOFTSGAARDEN about 1880. Halvor was born in Feb 1848 in Norway; died on 22 Nov 1934 in Granite Falls, Chippewa County, Minnesota; was buried on 27 Nov 1934 in Wangs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  11. 21.  Kari Tostensdatter KJERSTEN Descendancy chart to this point (9.Randi3, 3.Gudbrand2, 1.Eirik1) was born on 20 Apr 1860 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway.

    Other Events and Attributes:

  12. 22.  Anna (Annie) KJERSTEIN Descendancy chart to this point (9.Randi3, 3.Gudbrand2, 1.Eirik1) was born on 26 Mar 1863 in Vestre Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 2 Dec 1941 in Granite Falls Twp, Chippewa County, Minnesota; was buried on 6 Dec 1941 in Wangs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • MN Death Cert Checked: Y
    • Minnesota Death Certificate: 1941-MN-002398
    • Baptism: 25 May 1863, Vestre Slidre i Valdres, Oppland, Norway

    Notes:

She is I8325 in Jim’s Ellingboe tree revised on 24 Feb 2012. Jim shows no parents for her.

In his notes for her in that tree, Jim says: “She is probably the daughter of Knut Iverson Eltun and Gjertrud Thomasdotter Eltun. Knut moved to Bøkkadn (33/3) on N. Ellingbøe in 1868. Gjertrud's mother was Sigrid Ivarsdotter Kjerstein (1805-1879). Eltun is next to Kjerstein and there were many connections between the families. If she is this person, she would have been born 17 Apr 1863 and baptized 26 Apr 1863.”

She is not listed in Jim’s VS, either as Thrond’s wife or as Torstein Torsteinsen’s daughter.

Jim’s attribution of parentage to Knut and Gjertrud is not consistent with Anna’s 1884 marriage record to Thrond in which she is shown as Anna Thostensen Kjersten, age 20. It is also not consistent with the birth record for Anna and Thrond’s first child born in Maynard on 13 Jan 1886. In that Wang Lutheran Church record, the child’s mother is clearly shown to be “Anne T. Kjerstine.”

The parentage shown here is consistent with the birth record of the Anna born in Vestre Slidre (p.87, Vestre Slidre prestekontor 1856-1864). The farm name of that Anna’s father is something like Risiskeiet. That is consistent with Tosten Tostensen being on the Rusiskaaret farm in Vestre Slidre in the 1865 census. The bygdebok (Vang A, p. 239) shows that Tosten, son of Tosten Ivarsson Kjerstein, married Randi and left for Vestre Slidre in 1860.

Called Anna Thompson in MOMS when she married Trond in 1884. Called Anna Thostensen Kjerstein in the ELCA record (Our Savior’s in Sacred Heart) for that marriage.

Emigrated in 1867 according to the 1900 census. At that time she was 37 and a widow living with her family on a farm in Wang Township, Renville County. The household consisted of Anna, 37 (b. Mar 1863), Trond, 14 (b. Jun 1886 in Minnesota), Dina, 10 (b.. Jun 1889), Theodor, 8 (b. Oct 1891), Christine, 5 (b. Mar 1895), and Ida H., 2 (b. June 1897).

A 1913 land ownership map of Wang Twp, Renville County, shows that she owned an 80 acre parcel in or near the village or community of New Lisbon. Her parcel is contiguous and made up of the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter and the northwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9.

In the 1920 census, as “Mrs. Tom,” she was keeping house for her single, 27 year-old son Theodore in Tioga Twp, Williams County, North Dakota. She was shown, probably erroneously, as 63 years old.

Living with Helen and Helen’s husband at the time of the 1930 census. In that census, she was indicated as having come to this country in 1866.

In the 1940 census, she lived in Stoneham Twp, Chippewa County, with her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and William Kramer, in the same house in which they all had lived five years earlier. Anna had a fifth-grade education.

    She died from pernicious anemia.

Anna married Trond Trondsson ELLINGBØE on 26 Feb 1884 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota. Trond (son of Trond Iversson ELLINGBØE (OPDAL, UVDAL) and Kjersti Helgesdotter KJERSTEIN) was born on 1 Jun 1858 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway; died on 7 Nov 1897 in Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota; was buried on 10 Nov 1897 in Wangs Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wang Twp, Renville County, Minnesota. Notes:

    Or Engwald. Or Selthune.

Or Ingwald Johnathan/Jonathan. An Ingwald with that name registered for the WWI draft in McLean County, North Dakota, in 1918. He was a self-employed farmer in Raub, North Dakota, and was born 20 Nov 1885. His closest of kin was Janette Selthun.

An 18 year-old Engwald J Salthun lived in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1905. He and his father had been born in Wisconsin, his mother had been born in Norway.

In the 1900 census, he lived in Northfield. His parents were John Selthun, age 43, and Ambjor, age 53.

In the 1930 census, he was Engwald J Seltun, a 43 year-old taxi driver in Minot. His father was born in Minnesota and his mother in Norway. 14. 76.  Hilma LARSON Descendancy chart to this point (30.Sarah5, 13.Anne4, 6.Erik3, 2.Andris2, 1.Eirik1) was born in 1897; died in Nov 1929.

    Notes:

Hilma played piano. She moved with her family to Valley City ND when she was 12. She worked at a bank in Valley City, graduated from high school there and then graduated from the music department of the state normal school. She married William Jennings Bryan Clark 13 July 1919 and moved with her husband to Grand Forks ND in 1924. They had 4 daughters.

Hilma "trained her daughters in music". The four girls were born between 1920 and 1926 in North Dakota and were named Jean Harriett Clark, Ann Elton Clark, Margaret Louise Clark and Mary Elizabeth Clark. As youngsters, they were known as the "Clark Kiddies" and were the official mascots of the Grand Forks American Legion drum and bugle corps. In October of 1929 they represented North Dakota at an elaborate vaudeville program in Louisville to which each state contributed one act. The following month Hilma died tragically after a brief illness at the age of just 32, leaving William a widower with four daughters aged 3 to 9. He remarried in 1934 to Rosella Buckley and had two additional daughters, Judy and Susan.

Hilma's daughters continued their music careers as they grew up, at one time joining Ran Wilde's band in Nicollet, Minnesota, singing under contract with USO and finally moving up to their billing with Tommy Dorsey's band as "The Sentimentalists". Dorsey hired them on the spot after an audition in their West 45th Street apartment in New York. He had had problems with his previous girl singer group and insisted on renaming the Clark Sisters as The Sentimentalists and retaining all rights to that name, an arrangement that was to cause the girls no end of grief in future years. Among their best known songs with Dorsey are "On The Sunny Side of the Street" and "Chicago". (If you click on these links to go to their songs on YouTube, you will find many other songs there in which they are featured. In some cases, the vocals don't begin until well into the piece, so be patient. You will also find their pictures there, but this is long before the era of the music video so don't expect any live performances.)

Not surprisingly, the girls dated and married musicians. Jean married Vernon ("Derf") Friley who played trombone for such notables as Duke Ellington's band. Ann married Leo Quercio, a saxophone player and five years later married Howard ("Pete") Terry, a woodwind player who was a member of the NBC orchestra and played for television's "Laugh-In" and "Dean Martin's Comedy Hour". Margaret ("Peggy") married Wilbur ("Willie") Schwartz who played lead clarinet with the Glenn Miller orchestra. Mary married Bruce Darwin Branson, a saxophonist in the Tommy Dorsey orchestra. As the sisters started to raise their families, the lifestyle that came with being big band singers must have lost some appeal. Not being able to use their connection or name from Tommy Dorsey, most carried on singing as individuals in movie and film work throughout the 1950's and 60's. Ann, for example, sang for the Andy Williams and Carol Burnett television shows. Peggy and Jean were kept busy as studio singers for many years.

Hilma married William Jennings Bryan CLARK in 1919. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Anna was born in Granite Falls, Minn., on July 28, 1927, to Theodore and Josie (Strom) Ellingboe. Anna was the oldest surviving sister to five siblings: Cledith, Joanne, Esther, DeMaris and Tom. When she was a toddler, the family moved from the Midwest to Washington state, farming first in Poulsbo, Wash., and then in Sunnyslope, Wash. The family moved into town, Port Orchard, Wash., when the U.S. entered World War II. Anna graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1946. She went to Minneapolis, Minn., to further her education. She graduated from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1949 and graduated from the Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute as a physical therapist in 1952. As a new professional, she worked with polio patients in the Midwest. Anna continued in her physical therapy occupation until she retired in 1986. She continued in her caring vocation all her life.

Special thanks go to Drs. Bowman, Garcia, Gehab, and Kumar. The heartfelt thanks of a life-long caregiver and her family go to Kim, Patty, and Tracy, and (especially) to Kate.

    Notes:

In the 1957 Bremerton city directory, he is a driver for Lloyd M Mack.

He and Linda celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 6, 2013.

Thomas (Tom) Robert Ellingboe, 80, a long time Port Orchard resident, passed from this earth and into his savior’s arms on Friday, February 26, 2016, at Saint Joseph Hospital, Tacoma, Washington.

Tom was born on April 2, 1935, in Bremerton Washington, to Theodore and Josie Ellingboe. The youngest of 7 children, he attended Givens elementary school and South Kitsap Middle/High School.

At the age of 18, Tom joined the United States Marine Corps with his good friend Jerry, completing basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot, San Diego, California. Tom served his country in Korea and then in Japan, before returning stateside. He was fiercely proud of being a United States Marine, and to the end he was “Always Faithful”; Semper Fi.

After leaving military service Tom lived in California, worked as a carpet installer, and he had daughters Beth, and Darla. While in California, Tom also met the woman who became the love of his life, Linda Lee Aston. Tom and Linda were married on April 6th, 1963, and they had three children, Martin, Trina, and Kristen.

After moving back to Port Orchard, Tom briefly co-owned Port Orchard Carpets, before working in sales and management with Floor Decorators. At home, Tom was fond of singing while providing his own accompaniment with his beloved “Martin” guitar. He was blessed with a remarkable singing voice, and he loved to sing old country songs and the gospels. In his leisure time, Tom also was very fond of detailing his big cars, working in his yard, boating and completing projects around his house. He could also often be found hanging out with his friends at Myree’s for coffee and lots of good conversation.

A man of faith, Tom showed the same dedication, loyalty, and service to his Lord as he did to the Corps and to his family. With his strong faith in his Lord, Tom congregated with the Olalla Bible Church for many years, and was later a long time member of Grace Bible Church in Port Orchard. Throughout his life, and through many difficulties, Tom never questioned the Lords goodness or discounted his blessings, and he loved his God deeply.

Tom spent his final days caring for Linda in her struggles with health issues and until his final days could be found tending to her with loving dedication, devotion, and tenderness. Tom will be deeply missed by his many friends, co-workers, fellow Marines, and his loving family. He is with his Lord now, but he is forever in our hearts.
