Han var født på Eltun, men flyttet til Lunde da han giftet seg med Anne i 1760 De flyttet til Nystuen o1783. da hadde det vært en lang sak om rettighetene til "fjellstøga". Anders Frøholm skriver om enka etter "støgomannen" Nils Oldre; Dordi Lassesdtr Ølgøgn (Hamre) (1743-1783): "Då Dordi vart enke (1777) fekk ho truleg vanskar med å greie fjellstøgopliktene. Futen ville i alle fall ha henne bort og ha Knut T Lunde til ny fjellstøgomann, og sa henne ut hausten 1778. Saka vart utsett seks gonger, men på tinget 6.7.1780 vart Dordi dømd til å flytte frå Nystøga første faredag og ryddiggjøre fjellstøga for Knut Lunde, mot at han ga henne den lova livauren på 4 tn. korn og føding av 3 kyr og 6 småkrøtter inn atura eller penger etter prisen i bygda. Ho meinte å ha rett til å bli sitjande sidan mannen hadde makebytt seg til Nystøga, men retten fann at fjellstøga var "et publique sted", dvs offentlig eigedom som mannen hadde for si levetid, og ikkje slik at at enka som på anna bygselsjord kunn e sitje ut si levetid. Futen hadde levert ei klage på henne frå 18.12.1778 for dårlig stell for dei reisande og vedlikehald av staden. Buet etter Dordi hausten 1784 var verd brutto knapt 137 rd, men gjelda var på heile 248 rd! Ved skiftet gjorde futen krav på vederlag frå buet for at veg-visarstengene på fjellet var nedbrotne og klaga over "skogens ruin", men avingane meinte de i ikkje hadde hogd meir enn dei trong sjølve, og Knut Lunde sa at stengene vart brotne ned kvar vinter det var eit årvisst forfall. På den andre sida ville ikkje Knut betale for husa, som han meinte høyrde fjellstoga til, medan arvingane hevda at støgomennene, mann etter mann, hadde innløyst husa av føremannen. det var for mykje snø til at det kunne halde takst over fjellsteng ene då retten vart satt 9. juli.

Thomas Knutson Lo, his wife Marit Olsdatter and their daughter Anne, were killed during a 4 a.m. landslide on June 2, 1837. Ole Thomason (son of Thomas and Marit) was also killed, along with his wife, Anne Olsdatter Høverstad, and 2 of their 3 children: Ola and Tomas. Ole Thomason's sister-in-law, Sigrid Olsdatter Høverstad also perished. The only survivor in the extended family was little 6 year-old Marit, daughter of Ole Thomason and Anne.

Funeral services for Mrs. Velgjer Svien, who passed away at her home Saturday morning, January 24, were held in St. John's Lutheran church this afternoon at 2 p.m. with the pastor the Rev. B. R. Biorn officiating. Burial was made in the family lot beside the graves of her husband and four children. Pallbearers were six grand-nephews, Elmer, Clarence, Luther, George, Paul and Maurice Nystuen. Velgjer Nystuen Svien was born in Norway on October 10, 1842. After the death of her mother, Mr. Nystuen came to America with his family when Velgjer was 11 years of age. The trip from Norway to Quebec, Canada in 1854 took seven weeks aboard the slow sailing ship. The Nystuens first settled in Spring Prairie, Wis. and later moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa. It was there in 1860 that Velgjer married Andrew Svien. They moved to Goodhue county, Minnesota in 1865 where they were engaged in farming until 1876 when they moved to Northfield. She and her husband operated a hotel on Division Street. Mr. Svien also served as policeman. Mrs. Svien was a charter member of the Ladies Aid society of St. John's church and a long time member of the congregation. Mr. Svien passed away inn 1927. For several years she continued to reside at the home on Washington Street. She was cared for later in a rest home and at the time of her death was being cared for by her grandson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Lockren. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Hans Bergan, Lake Mills, Iowa; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. A foster daughter, Mrs. H. E. Frazee (Susie) of Pelican Rapids, also survives.

The state’s oldest resident, Mrs. Velgjer Svien, passed away Friday, Jan. 23,1953, at the age of 110 years, 3 months, and 13 days. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. B. R. Biorn at St. Johns Lutheran church Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 2 oclock. Gertrude Boe Overby was soloist and Mrs. H. J. Westwood was organist. Burial was beside her husband in Northfield cemetery.

Velgjer Nystuen was born at Valdres, Norway, Oct. 10, 1842. After the death of her mother which occurred when Velgjer was only eight, she came with her father and his other children to the United States in 1854. The trip across the ocean was made on a sailing vessel, taking eleven weeks. The familys first home was in Spring Prairie, Wis. After three years they moved to St. Ansgar, la., and it was here in 1860 that Velgjer was married to Andrew J. Svien. She was then 18 years of age. In 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Svien moved to a farm in Goodhue county, Minnesota. Northfield became their home in 1876 and for the remaining years of their lives. Mr. Svien died in 1926, and Mrs. Svien spent 77 years as a resident here. For a time Mr. and Mrs. Svien had a hotel on Division street in the building now occupied by the Berg and Son Upholstery business, but Mr. Svien is better remembered by the generations of his day as the town policeman, an affable man faithfully walking his beat. Mrs. Svien’s recipe for long life, “Don’t hurry,” she practiced indeed. She never allowed herself to be hurried or worried, taking each moment, as well as each day, as it came, and maintaining a serenity rarely found in this mechanized day of speed. She enjoyed remarkably good health and strength for her advanced years. On her 100th birthday she sat through an afternoon of festivities in her honor given by the ladies aid at St. John’s church, and she showed no weariness from the experience. She was a charter member of the ladies aid and a member of the church. That birthday was also marked by an interview with her on the radio, as well as another party given her at her home, at which about 100 relatives and friends came to greet her. On her 105th birthday another sizable celebration was held at her home. This too she enjoyed thoroughly, making frequent trips outside to pose for pictures. Until she was 98 Mrs. Svien lived alone and took care of her home and of herself. Her daughter Carrie, Mrs. Lervik, then came to live with her. The daughter passed away after a few years. Seven years ago a grandson, William Lockren, and Mrs. Lockren came to care for Mrs. Svien. She clung to the practice of ministering to her own needs until frailty prevented, and that was only about three years ago. The Sviens had two sons and two daughters: Carrie, John, Tom, and Anna, all of whom have died; also a foster daughter, Susie, Mrs. H. E. Frazee, who lives in Pelican Rapids. There are six grandchildren,10 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Svien has one sister living, Mrs. Hans Bergan, Lake Mills, la. Mrs. Bergan is in her 90s. The pallbearers for Mrs. Svien were all grandnephews. They were all Nystuens, Elmer, Clarence, Luther, George, Paul, and Maurice. Mrs. Svien had seen in her life-time a panorama of marvelous changes—from sailing vessels to steamboats to aircraft; from prairie and woodland country to cities and paved highways; from covered wagons and horses to trains and automobiles. She had seen the wonders of science bring in the telephone, the electric light, the phonograph, the radio, and television. She had seen her country in the throes of five wars; The Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, and the present Korean conflict. She had lived in this country under 20 presidents. Franklin Pierce was president when she arrived in 1854. The Civil War was raging when she came with her husband to Goodhue county. And their arrival in Northfield was the same year the James-Younger raid invaded the city and met its Waterloo. Her life in the Midwest embraced the period of the development of this great area from its rudest beginnings.

Helge Erikson Kasa was one of the contributors to the start-up of St. Olaf College.

He was a veteran of the Civil War, Company D, 10th Regiment, Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.

As Henry, 38, he and his family were living with his parents in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County, in the 1880 census.

In the 1885 state census, he is in Warsaw Twp. Living on one side is his parents and brother Johannes and family. Living on the other side is his sister Ambjor Ellingboe, widow of Iver.

In the 1895 state census, the family lives next to the Gaasdelens (widow Guri, 58, is the head) in Warsaw Twp. In the census at least, Henry and Ingrid are listed as Erikson although all of their children are Kasas. All of the children, from Berit to Albert except for Iver, are still living with Henry and Ingrid in 1895.

In the 1920 census, Helge and Ingrid still have Berith, Helge, John, Oscar, and Albert at home, all single. In addition, they have three grandchildren living with them: Freddie (#11119), Herman, and Alice. The last two seem to be Erick’s.

He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books) but his entry specifically says he was not a member of the Samband.

He is Henry Erickson on his death certificate, for which the informant was his wife Ida. He died of stomach cancer.

"Ambjør," as her name was written in earlier records, was five years old when her family of eight immigrated to the Spring Prairie community in Columbia County, Wisconsin. In 1861 her family came to Warsaw Township in Goodhue County, where she spent the rest of her life. On May 22, 1864, Ambjor was confirmed with 13 others at Holden Lutheran Church, rural Kenyon. Her parents later joined Vang Lutheran Church in Dennison. After marriage Ambjor and Iver lived in Warsaw Township near the Kasa farm. She became a widow at the age of 32 years, and gave birth to her 5th child eight months after Iver's death. In 1911 Ambjor sold, to her son Erik, 126 acres in sections 20 and 29 of Warsaw Township for $7,000. At the time of the 1930 census, she was living with Erik and his family. Prior to her death, she lived with her daughter Christine in Dennison. Ambjor was the last surviving child of Erika and Berit Nystuen Kasa's seven children. She and Iver had five children.

Obit information from Find A Grave and Dennis C. Olson:

Gilbert Haugen, the son of Gilbert G. Haugen (from death certificate) and Anna Thasa Haugen, was born in Norway, May 21, 1849 (from death certificate) and came at a very young age with his parents to America. He married Ingeborg Isabel Estrem at Decorah, Iowa, on December 30, 1878. The names appearing on the church records for that marriage were Gilbert Nelson and Isabel Anderson.

Shortly after their marriage they moved to Boone County, Nebraska, where seven of their nine children were born. One baby died and was buried on the prairie and also a son Gustav Martinus died. During the time they lived in Nebraska they used the name Nilsen or Nelson.

It is not known exactly when the family moved to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, area but they were living there at least from 1893 to the middle of 1895. Their youngest son Knute was born while they made their home there.

After his death Ingeborg stayed on the farm and made her home with her son Talmer.

Sometime during the late 1890's the family moved to Minnesota and in 1898 settled in Webster township of Rice County, Minnesota. It was apparently during this time that they began to use the Haugen name.

Gilbert died November 19, 1915 in Webster township, Rice County, Minnesota from heart problems.

He leaves to mourn his death six children, namely, Talmar Haugen at home, Gust Haugen on a neighboring farm, Knute Haugen, Northfield, Mrs. Paul Overby, Binford, N.D., Mrs. Albert Thorpe, Minneapolis. Two brothers-in-law, Christ Estrem, Petersburg, Neb., Andrew Estrem, Decorah, Iowa, and several grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were; an infant buried on the farm in Nebraska; Gustav Martinus born December 16, 1879, died March 5, 1893 buried at Closter, Nebraska; and Albert born November 9, 1885, died July 28, 1908 buried at Binford, North Dakota.

Rev. Knut E. Bakken died at his home east of the village here on Saturday evening, Oct 23, after an illness of five months. He became ill this spring while pastor of a charge at Verndale, Minn., and was forced to resign on account of poor health, and returned to his farm in the township of Warsaw. his illness was heart trouble and he gradually grew weaker until at last succumbed on Oct 23.

Knute E. Bakken was born in Warsaw Township, Goodhue county, on July 24,1861. He attended St., Olaf College from 1880 to 1882. During the winter of 1882 he attended Decorah Institute, Decorah, Iowa. In 1883 he entered Archibald’s Business College at Minneapolis and graduated from that institution the 29th of May, 1884. in 1885 and 1886 he was engaged as a school teacher. From 1887 to 1889 he was clerk in the Minnesota legislature and during the summer of 1890 he was appointed United States Census Enumerator at St. Paul. In the fall of 1890 he entered the United Church Seminary and graduated June 3, 1893. He accepted a call from Springfield congregation in Winneshiek county, Iowa and was ordained as a minister on the 15th of June 1893, at Minneapolis. He served as pastor in this charge from 1893 to 1911.

On the 15th of November, 1894, he was joined in marriage to Miss Signe Augusta Jacobson of Winneshiek county, Iowa. Besides his wife he leaves nine children, four sons and five daughters, to mourn his death. He also leaves his aged mother, who lives at the old homestead and two brothers, Rev. G.H. Bakken of Wautomah, Wis., and Thomas Bakken of Warwas township, and also two sisters, Mrs. Ole J. Hamre of Erskine, Minn, and Miss Carrie Bakken who lives at the old homestead.

The funeral was held on Thursday oct 28, with a short service at the home and reguar service at Vangs church. Rev. H.O. Fjelstad of Holden congregation preached the funeral sermom. Rev. S. O. Simundson of Kenyon also made a short speech. Prof I.F. Grose of St. Olaf college read a resolution of thanks from the congregation in Winneshiek county, Iowa, where Rev. K.E. Vakken had been pastor for 18 years. During the service John T. Eltun of Northfield rendered a vocal solo. The paulbearers were Rev. A, Hauge, Rev. S.O. Simundsomn, Prof. I.F. Grose, David Jacobson, John Eltun and Sever Stende. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Vangs churh was filled with friends and relatives who were present to attend the funeral services of a man who was loved and respected by a large circle of friends. The remains were laid at rest in Vangs cemetery.

Gilbert Tasa, 90, of Dennison passed away at Northfield City Hospital Tuesday, Sept. 5. He had been a resident of the Dilley Convalescent unit for some time. Mr. Tasa was an 1896 graduate of Luther College and farmed most of his life. He was never married. Funeral services will be held from the Vang Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, with the Rev. John Fahning officiating. Interment will be at the Vang Cemetery. Survivors include on brother, Albert, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Albert Antoni Tasa, 85, of Dennison, were held Sept. 17 at the Vang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeno Weisz officiating. Interment took place at the Vang Cemetery. Christine Gunhus, accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midge, sang "Children Of The Heavenly Father." Pallbearers were Eric Odegaard, Lester Odegaard, Obert Musgjerd, George Langemo, Myron Heggedahl, and Robert Adamson. Albert Tasa was born on Feb. 6, 1886, to John and Ingeborg Bakken Tasa on their homestead in Holden Township. He was baptized on March 14, 1886, by the late Rev. J. N. Kildahl, and confirmed on Nov. 11, 1900, by the late Rev. A. Hauge. He was a life-long member of the Vang congregation, and lived on the homestead for most of his life. His parents, eight sisters, and three brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by 14 nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives. He passed away on Sept. 13 at the Dilly Convalescent Home in Northfield, where he had been a resident since 1964.

Funeral services for John G. Johnson 83, were held at the Vang Lutheran Church Tuesday, June 18, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. B. J. Blikstad, pastor of the Vang, Urland and Wangen Prairie parish, officiating. Mrs. Blikstad sang, "My God and I" and "Rock of Ages", with the church organist, Mrs. Cyrus Midje, accompanying. Pallbearers were six grandsons, John Olson, Richard Olson, James Johnson, Larry Johnson, Robert Johnson and Mark Johnson. Interment was in the Vang Cemetery. Mr. Johnson passed away, after a sudden illness, at the Rice County District One Hospital in Faribault Sunday, June 16. He was born in Warsaw Township, May 25, 1880. His parents were George and Berit (Nystuen) Johnson. He was confirmed in the Vang church by the late Dr. C. A. Melby. On June 26, 1907, he was united in marriage to Germine Maring. They established their home in Warsaw Township where they resided until the year 1943, when they moved to Kenyon. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive him: Morris of Lake City, Mrs. Orren (Bernice) Olson of Bode, Iowa, Lee of Keokuk, Iowa, Arlie of Dennison and Donald of Dallas, Tex. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one grandson, Paul Olson. Mr. Johnson was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was an active member of the church and his community.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 9, at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Northfield for Erick Kasa, 94, with the Rev. H. S. Bly of Kenyon officiating in the absence of the regular pastor, the Rev. B. J. Blikstad. Those present joined in singing "Nearer My God To Three" and "Beautiful Savior". Pallbearers were Arthur Ellingboe, George Vandenheuvel, Phillip Hauge, Leroy Swarts, Sr., Leonard Simonson and Bennard Ellingboe. Burial was in the Vang Lutheran Church Cemetery at Dennison. Erick Kasa was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erickson. He was born in the Dennison area on Sept. 26, 1869. Except for farming two years in Litchfield, he spent the rest of his life in the Dennison community. At one time he was engaged in the livery business in Dennison and was employed in the local creamery. He also worked on the Great Western Railroad. He was married in 1908 to Christine Thoreson. She preceded him in death. He was baptized and confirmed in the Vang Lutheran Church. He died at 7:30 a.m. Monday, July 6, at the St. Olaf Rest Home in Northfield where he had lived for several years. He had been in ill health since 1955. Surviving are three sons and one daughter: Fred of Cannon Falls, Herman and Maurice of Dennison and Mrs. Harold (Alice) Amundson of Rochester. There are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren all surviving. There are four brothers living: John Kasa of Newtown, N. D., Austin Kasa of Northfield, Oscar Kasa of Annandale and Bennie of Dennison. Three sisters Betsey, Bertha and Ingeborg and three brothers: Iver, Helge and Albert preceded him in death. Erick Kasa had been married twice. Both of his former wives are dead, the former Mollie Thoreson and the former Christine Soine.

Kasa, who passed away at his home just north of Wang's Corner in Warsaw Township on Monday, Feb. 27, at the age of 84 years and three months. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Mrs. Blikstad sang a Norwegian son, "Jeg er en Fremmend," accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midje, organist; Parnell Morck of Kenyon sang, "Does Jesus Care," also accompanied by Mrs. Midje. Pallbearers were Ludvig Soine, Cyrus Midje, Lewis P. Underdahl, John A. Underdahl, Austin Brekken and John T. Stenhaug. Burial was in the family lot in the Vang Cemetery. Iver H. Kasa, the son of Henry Erickson Kasa and Ingerid Kasa, was born in Warsaw township, November 30, 1871. He was baptized and confirmed in the Vang church by the Rev. C. A. Melby. He was united in marriage November 21 to Randi Holien at Vang church by Rev. Melby. To this union, five children were born. One daughter, Ida, died in infancy. Another daughter, Selma, passed away in 1924. He wife preceded him in death in 1937. He is survived by three sons: Helmer, at home, Melvin, of rural Dennison and Henry of Northfield. There are three grandchildren and six brothers: Erick, of Dennison, Austin of Northfield, Albert of Rosemount, John, of New Town, N. D., Oscar, of St. Cloud, Bennie of rural Dennison, and one sister, Bertha of Northfield. Kasa had farmed all his life in this neighborhood where he was well known.

DENNISON (Special)--Helge H. Kasa, 75, of this place died at his rooming house in Northfield, Tuesday, March 29. He passed away in his sleep and was found in the morning when a friend went to his room to awaken him. Mr. Kasa had suffered from heart trouble for some time but his death came unexpectedly. Funeral services were conducted at Vang church April 1, by Rev. Adolph Egge. Pallbearers were: Herman, Melvin I., Melvin B., Helge, Fred and Austin Jr. They were all Kasas and all were nephews of the deceased. Helge H. Kasa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Erickson Kasa, was born in Warsaw township on March 27, 1874 and with the exception of a short time spent in North Dakota, had spent his whole life in this community and living on the place of his birth. He was a member of the Vang congregation and never was married. Surviving are two sisters and seven brothers; Mrs. Herman Estergreen of Fargo, N. Dak., Miss Bertha of Minneapolis, Austin of Northfield, Albert of Rosemount, John of Van Hook, N. Dak., Erick, Iver and Ben of Dennison. Austin (1885-1970) was the son of Helge and Ingri (Oldre) Kasa.  He was born and raised in Holden Township, Goodhue County, near the Vang Church.  Ida (1895-1975) was the daughter of Even and Inga (Oldre) Remme.  She and Austin were both baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church which was near their homes.  Ida went to grade school in the Dennison area, but attended high school in Luverne, MN. While going to high school she lived with her father’s parents.  Austin and Ida were married in 1918.  They lived and farmed in the Northfield-Dennison area.  The last farm they lived on was the Orr farm in Section 15 of Northfield Township.  The Kasa’s main farming enterprise was dairy cattle.  Austin especially liked to work with horses.  He often trained horses for himself and also trained horses for other people in the area.  After retiring in the late 1950s, Austin and Ida moved to Northfield.  Mr. Kasa worked at Carleton College as a custodian for a number of years.  He also liked to get out in the country and do some farm work.  The Kasa children were:  Inez (Mrs. William Munckton) of Northfield; Helge Edin, died shortly after his birth; Helen (Mrs. Helen Radtke) of Northfield; Helge Even of rural Dennison; Gladys (Mrs. Ralph Koester) of rural Northfield; Austin Jr., of Cottage Grove; Avis (Mrs. Curtis Reed) of Maribel, WI; Donald of Northfield, died in 1977; Eugene of rural Northfield; Donna (Mrs. Sewell Mathre) of Northfield; and JoAnne (Mrs. Stanley Kucera, Jr.) of Houston, TX.

On December 15, 1921, he was united in marriage to Lavina Johnson, also of this neighborhood. To them were born four children: John of Farmington, Mrs. Ed Kimbrel (Beatrice) of St. Paul, Vernon of St. Peter and Edward of Cannon Falls. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Anna Tasa and three grandchildren. Mr. Svien spent his whole life in this community and leaves a large number of friends.

His will is listed in the Goodhue County Will Records, Volume 089 1945-1952, for the will year 1946.

They have been married for four years and it is the first marriage for each. Nellie has had one child, no longer living. Included in the household is Oscar Lee, 50, born in Iowa, “cousin” and a 31 year-old male, name illegible, roomer.

In the 1915 Pueblo city directory, his wife is Mary and he is a steel worker. They live at 1307 Cypress.

The 1916 directory includes a Theresa Ellingboe, clerk, also living at 1307 Cypress. She is a step-daughter of Iver’s, the daughter of Mary with John Grome.

Iver registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Pueblo County. Because the name of his employer (Colorado Fuel & Iron Co.) was stamped on the card, the company probably arranged the registration for its employees. At that time Iver and his wife Mary were living at 1027 Pine in Pueblo. He was described as tall and of slender build with brown eyes and light hair. He had lost the end of his right index finger after the second joint.

In the 1920 census, he is still working for the steel mill in Pueblo.

In the 1930 census, he is still working for the steel mill in Pueblo as a melter foreman.

In the 1931 Pueblo city directory, he is a melter for CF&I. He resides St. Charles Mesa.

In the 1940 census, he and Mary L live in Pueblo. He is a melter in a steel mill. He had been educated through the fourth grade, his wife through the fifth grade. Also part of their household was Rose Ann Southers, age 13, niece, and Peggy Ellingboe, age 7, daughter. Peggy and Rose Ann had also lived with Ivar and Mary at this house in 1935. Peggy and Rose Ann were born in Utah. The next census entry after Ivar was for his son Robert and Robert’s wife Ann E and son Robert Jr. Rose was the daughter of Van and Josephine Southers. The family was recorded in the 1930 census in Utah. Van Southers was born in Georgia and may have been a brother of Mary L. No Ellingboes were ever born in Utah so we don’t know who Peggy is. She could not have been the natural daughter of Mary L.

The 1945 Pueblo city directory shows Iver as a melter for CF&I.

His employment record at CF&I shows he worked for that company continuously between about 1902 to at least May of 1945. Along the way he lost one of his index fingers. The company employment card listed him as 5 ft 10.5 inches tall, 160.5 lbs., dark grey eyes and light brown hair.

A hymn was sung by the congregation, and Mrs. James Johnson sang two vocal selections. Mrs. Cyrus Midge presided at the organ. Six grandsons: Paul Wardell, James Johnson, Gary Wardell, Thomas Johnson, John Rodde and Alfred Brandvold, Jr., served as pallbearers. Interment took place in the Vang Cemetery. Gilma E. Underdahl passed away Wednesday morning, Oct. 18, at the Kenyon Sunset Home at the age of 71 years. The daughter of Johannes and Marit Lein Kasa, she was born May 21, 1896, in Warsaw township, Goodhue County. She was baptized June 28, 1896, in Vang Lutheran Church and confirmed on November 20, 1910, by the late Rev. A. Hauge. June 9, 1915, she was united in marriage to John A. Underdahl. They have seven children, two sons: Peter of Kenyon and Leroy of Dennison; five daughters: Clarabelle (Mrs. Alfred Brandvold), Marian (Mrs. Albion Rodde) both of Kenyon, Agnes (Mrs Arlie Johnson), Joyce (Mrs Truman Skaro) both of Dennison and Gladys (Mrs. Roland Wardell) of Minneapolis. She is survived by her seven children, twenty-five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Betsy Dalbotten of Kenyon. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, Her parents, one sister and two brothers, one of whom died in infancy.

DENNISON--(Special)--Funeral services were held at the Vang Lutheran church, Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. for Joseph Kasa, 52-year-old resident of the High Prairie area. The Rev. Adolph Egge of Northfield officiated. Interment as at the Vang cemetery. Pallbearers were Theodore Frettem, Cyrus Midje, Helmer Kasa, Selmer Gilge, Ludvig and Thomas Soine. Joseph Kasa, the son of John E. and Marit Kasa, was born December 14, 1899 in Warsaw township. He was never married. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. John A. Underdahl of the Wangs community and Mrs. Betsy Dalbotten of Kenyon. One sister, Mrs. Sever (Anna) Simonson died several years ago. One brother died in infancy. Mr. Kasa engaged in farming and also operated a truck hauling milk from the farms to the Northfield Milk Products company at Northfield. On Thursday morning while he was discussing plans for building a new garage with two carpenters, Ole Midness and Oscar Kappedahl of Cannon Falls, he was stricken with a heart attack and died a few minutes later.

Sophia Haugen was born January 19, 1890, at Petersburg, Nebraska. She was married on January 25, 1908, at Northfield, Minnesota, and the couple farmed west of here.

Abraham Bakken, 76, route 1, Dennison, passed away on friday, Dec. 15, 1972, at Northfield hospital after a brief illness. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday, Dec. 14. The funeral service was held at Vang Lutheran church at Dennison on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 2:00 P. M. , the Rev. Jeno Weisz officiating. Mrs. Cyrus Midje was the organist and Mrs. Delbert Ryberg was the vocal soloist. Interment was in Vang cemetery. Pallbearers were Edward Haugen, Herman Haugen, Joel Stenhaug, Alva King, Joseph Flom and Arlie Johnson. Mr. Bakken was born on December 20, 1896, at Decorah, Iowa, the son the Rev. Knute and Signe (Jacobson) Bakken. He moved with his family to Minnesota in 1911. On January 3, 1920, he married the former Thea Holien and he farmed in the Dennison area most of his life. Surviving are his widow, Thea; one daughter, Mrs. Olaf Huseth (Grace) of rural Dennison; three grandchldren; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.

Mary Christine's father James was the son of Helmer Sybilrud and  Almira (Myra) Leonora Tasa. Myra was the daughter of John Tasa and  Christine Soine. John apparently died, perhaps in South Dakota where Myra was born, and Christine later married Erick Kasa in Minnesota. Unfortunately, Christine died in 1914 of tuberculosis. Apparently at  this point Myra went to live with the Kildahls who were either about to move from Northfield or had already moved to St. Paul. (Mrs.  Kildahl was Bertha Soine, sister of Christine.) The 1920 census shows  Myra (as "niece") living with the Kildahls in St. Paul. Myra may have  been adopted by Johan and Bertha Kildahl and/or she may have taken Kildahl as her surname.



According to her death certificate, her father was John Tasa and her mother was Christine Soine. Myra had had 2 years of college and had been a schoolteacher. She died of dehydration and kidney failure complicated by dementia. The informant for her death certificate was Jane Sybilrud of Box 68, Elysian, Minnesota.

Clarence Benjamin Nystuen, 90, died Saturday, January 28, 2006 in Payson, Arizona. Clarence was born November 13, 1915 in Northfield, Minnesota to Eliam and Emma Nystuen. The family attended Bethel Lutheran Church, founded by his Grandfather, John T. Nystuen. He attended a neighborhood one-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and then attended Northfield High School, graduating in 1935. While still in High School, he and his older brother, Maurice, took over the family farm. Clarence was an innovative farmer, always ready to try the newest equipment and methods. Clarence married Betty Batson of Castle Rock, Minnesota on March 20, 1947. They had 3 daughters while in Minnesota. Clarence was involved in the Northfield Saddle Club, serving as President for several years. In 1959, Clarence and Betty sold the family farm, moving to Montana briefly, where their 4th daughter was born. They then settled in Casa Grande, Arizona where Clarence sold farm machinery for Bingham Equipment for the next 25 years. After retiring in 1985, Clarence and Betty moved to Payson, Arizona where Clarence spent his time collecting antiques, shopping at yard sales and visiting with friends, neighbors and out-of-town guests. He was a life-long Republican. Clarence is survived by Betty, his wife of almost 59 years; three daughters: Becky Alvizo of Casa Grande, Carol Nystuen of Tempe, and Linda Nystuen of Casa Grande; six grandchildren: Elizabeth Alvizo and Joanna Duncan of Tucson, Steve Wilson of Tempe, Sonja Wilson of Flagstaff, Bethany and Jennifer Benedict of Casa Grande; one great-grandson, Jerris Duncan of Tucson; and many favorite nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Pamela Betty Nystuen; two brothers: Elmer and Maurice Nystuen; two sisters: Mabel Arneson and Helen Miller, all of Minnesota. A memorial service is scheduled for High Noon on Saturday, February 4 at Payson United Methodist Church, 414 N Easy Street, Payson, AZ 85541.
