Deretter flyttet han fra Vang før 1767. Det ser ikke ut til at hverken Sjugurd eller den andre kona hans Marit er døde i Vang.

dwfrench1 also refers to him as Anders Syversen Østreim and has him born 28 Jun 1742 and dying 2 May 1816 on Gjevre.

The bygdebok says he was born in 1756. The 1801 census (which has him and his family on Gjevre) shows him as age 44, thus born in 1756.

Han har etterkommere i Tioga i USA VALDRESBYGDEN I GOODHUE COUNTY, MINNESOTA Det var vel helst om pioner-menn og kvinner vi skulde skrive og ikke om settlementer, men i de fleste tilfelle er de naturligvis knyttet så tett sammen at de er nærsagt uadskillelige. Vi vet også at mange av de mend som særlig har fortjent omtal e her, får en litt mer utførlig saga i avsnittet om fremskutte vardreser. Ovennevnte vardresbygd ligger ca. 25 mil vestenfor Mississippifloden i det sydestlige Minnesota. Den grunnlagdes i 1855, da nogen landsøkere fra Vang i Valdres ankom og bosatte sig. BOOK - HISTORY OF GOODHUE COUNTY, MN. PUBLISHED IN 1909 Carl N. Lien, Red Wing, who has a long and honorable record of public office holding in this and Ramsey counties, is the son of Nils G. and Martha (Holm) Lien, natives of Norway. The mother came to America in 1852 and located in Winneshiek county, Iowa. The father came a year later and settled in Manitowoc, Wis. They were married at Decorah, Iowa, in 1856, and in the spring of the following year came to Warsaw, this county, where the father carried on general farming until his death, in 1901. His widow followed him to the grave two years later. Carl N. attended the public schools and took a course in the Lutheran College at Decorah, Iowa. After a course at Northfield, Minn., at St. Olaf's College, he completed his schooling with a business training in the Curtiss Business College at St. Paul. Thus, well equipped with a classical and business education, he started out in life for himself. Between 1879 and 1889 he was justice of the peace, assessor and township chairman, and town clerk in Warsaw, and in 1883-85 was enrolling clerk in the house of representatives. From October, 1885, to June, 1886, he was transcribing clerk in the office of the United States surveyor-general, at St. Paul. He was then elected county auditor of Goodhue county, and from January, 1890, to January 4, 1909, served honorably and continuously in that position. Mr. Lien was married April 24, 1878, to Mary E. Johnson, who was educated in Carleton College and St. Olaf's College, at Northfield, Minn. She also taught school six years, four years in Iowa and two years in Goodhue county. This union has been blessed with eight children. Amanda, born July 29, 1879, married Elias Rachie, and lives at Willmar, Minn. Clara M., born October 30, 1880, married Ole J. Olson, a contractor and builder, of Sioux Falls, S. D. Anna married Edward Lidberg, of Red Wing. She was born September 11, 1882. Nels, N., born August 1, 1884, is deputy auditor of the county. Mabel C., born October 23, 1886, and Julia, born September 9, 1889, are graduates of the Red Wing high school. In the 1930 census, Marit, 69, was living with, and listed as a servant (“maid”) for, Sever Weflen, a 56 year old single farmer in Renville County. The Sever Weflen farm was located next to the residence of Iver A. Ellingboe. She is shown to have emigrated in 1866.

In the 1936 Minneapolis city directory, she lives with George and Agnes at 409 E 18th.

In the 1938 Minneapolis city directory, she lives at 1711 Portland Avenue S, apartment 23.

After the death of his father, his mother married Christopher Larson Heen in 1828, and he had five brothers and sisters. He left the family just after turning 21 in 1847. He traveled to Bergen early in 1848, and sailed on the Statsrsad Vogt to New York, arriving there on July 3, 1848. He made his way to Minnesota, where spent the rest of his life farming. He married Ingaborg Ovesdatter Kattevold in the Holden Lutheran Church in Goodhue County in 1862. Their children were: Anne Marie (1865), Ove Julius Johnsen (1867), Emma (1871), Geneva Marguerita (1877), Julia Cecilia (1878), Alfred J. (1882), and Clare Claude (1887). Jon Johan died on November 14, 1888 in Renville City, Renville County, Minnesota. From one of Lars’s descendants: "Lars Christophersen Soine was born on 14 June 1830 in Vang, Valdres Norway. He came to America with his parents in 1853, he was 23 years old. He went by the name Lars O Christophersen. He worked in the logging camps in Wisconsin. He rode the logs down the river to keep them from jumbling. Several times he was thrown, by the force of the swift current and the jerking logs, into the water. In 1856 he married Anna Ellestad. Three of their nine children were born in Wisconsin. In the early 1860's Lars and Anna went moved to Goodhue County in Minnesota where they rented a farm for a few years. Then they purchased 160 acres in Warsaw township in Goodhue County. At this time he returned to using the name Lars Soine. Lars and Anna lived in a small house on their land until 1884 when they built a 12 room house for two families. He planned this house for two families so that he would have a place of his own in their old age. Lars and Anna lived in four rooms, tworooms downstairs (12x14 and 14x16) and two rooms upstairs. Their son, Thomas, and his family of 12 lived in seven of the rooms, four big rooms downstairs and three upstairs. The room above the kitchen was used as a store room for both families. Both families used the same stairs and hallway to the second floor.Each family had their own cellar and stairs. The pump was on the porch between the two kitchens. (Don't you think many oldfolks would love this arrangement nowadays instead of the old folks home?) He came to America with his family in 1853. He was 12 years old when his parents died. Syver was taken in by an English family, where he learned to speak English, and he eventually forgot Norwegian. He joined the Union Army on August 22, 1862; he was 20 years old. He was in Company D of the 10th Regiment of the Minnesota Volunteers. He fought at Gettysburgh with Gen. Sherman on his march to the sea. Syver enlisted under the name of Chrstopherson. After the war Lars, Syver, and Ole reunited in Goodhue County and there Syver met and married Sonneva Ellingboe in 1867. They had 3 sons. They moved to Wang township in Renville County. Syver was killed by a runaway, while haying in July 1874, and he is buried in a Wang cemetery.

The Union Army was recruiting in Minnesota in the summer of 1862 when Sever Christopherson enlisted as a private in the 10th Minn. Volunteers from Warsaw, Rice Co. The Regiment, under Col. James H. Baker, had orders to travel to New York and then to the Gulf via steamer; but before recruitment was complete the Sioux Indians in western Minnesota began misbehaving and the Regiment was sent to bolster other troops fighting around New Um, Nicollet Co. The captured Indians were sent to Mankato army post where they were courtmartialed and executed in February of 1863.

The winter of 1862/1863, the Regiment spent doing guard duty on the frontier, building stockades, and training. In camp at Henderson until February when they were ordered to Mankato to participate in the execution of the Sioux Indians.

In the summer of 1863, the 10th Minn., and other regiments took the offensive against the Indians, beat them up, and chased them across the Missouri River. On both campaigns Sever marched through the area where he would later homestead (in Renville County), but which was an Indian land in 1863 and 1863.

On the 18th of September 1863, orders arrived at Ft. Snelling, which was the main army post in the Minn. District (old Ft. Snelling is located across the river from Minneapolis and south of St. Paul) for the 10th to report to St. Louis, Mo. And they traveled by boat to Dunleith, by rail to St. Louis. There the Regiment did garrison and provost duty as there were several military prisons for prisoners of war, for "stragglers" (a euphemism for deserters who got caught), 5 forts and many supply warehouses. It was at St. Louis that Col. Phelps resigned and Capt. C.L. Davis took command of Co. D.

On April 22, 1864, the 10th Minn. left for Columbus, Kentucky, and on June 19, 1864 they were sent to Memphis, Tenn. On July 13, 1864 the Rebels attacked them at Tupelo Hill, under Gen. Bedford Forrest who was protecting Gen. Hood's withdrawal. Gen. Forrest withdrew in an orderly fashion and the 10th pressed after him. Through the fall, the unit had several skirmishes in pursuit and harassment of the Rebels.

On Dec. 15 and 16, 1864, the 10th and other units assaulted Gen. Hood's earthworks and the last battle of Nashville ensued. After taking casualties, the 10th succeeded in driving out an exhausted Confederate Army. The 10th had the task of pressing on Hood's rear, which sent them up against their old foe, Gen. Bedford Forrest. The 10th pushed on to Mobile Bay participating in the battle at Spanish Fort.

The war was over and the 10th returned to Ft. Snelling via river steamer and were formally mustered out of the Union Army on August 19, 1865.

That's what Sever's unit was doing from 1862 to 1865, but what Sever was doing is another matter. His war records show that he was present at all of the Indian Wars, and that he went south from Ft. Snelling to St. Louis. However, his records show that in May of 1864 he was in the Post Hospital in Columbus, Ky. because of sickness, not specified. Half the the casualties in the Civil War died of illnesses such as typhoid smallpox, dysentery, and just plain old pneumonia. His records say he was ill through the fall of 1864/1865, and that he was forwarded to Ft. Snelling the middle of Aug. 1864 and was ill until Oct. 20th when he resumed his duties at Ft. Snelling.

His papers say that Sever was 20 years old when he enlisted, that he was 5 ft, 9 inches, his eyes- gray, his hair and complexion -light. Sever Christopherson appears on the official roster of Company D.

July 1889), Martin, 7 (b. Jun 1892), Olaf S., 4 (b. May 1896), Syver, 17 (b. Feb 1883), Olaus, 14 (b. Sept 1885), and, apparently, Sigrid’s children from a previous marriage: Anne Haugen, 26 (b. Apr 1874), and Gulbrand, 20 (b. Dec 1879). Ole’s other children, Torger, 24 (b. Apr 1876), Christ, 26 (b. Apr 1874), and Gertina, 19 (b. Oct 1880), are shown as a separate household entered next on the census form.

In the 1910 census, he and Sigrid were living in Wang Twp with Christ, Theoline, and Martin.

In the 1920 census, he and Sigrid were living in Wang Twp, probably on the original farm, with Martin and his family. Christ was also living with them.

From the age of nine years until 1857 he lived in Michigan, then in Dane county, Wisconsin until 1860, at which date he removed to Iowa; in 1862 he removed to Goodhue County, Minnesota. The year following enlisted in Company F, 2d cavalry, and served through the remainder of the war. Married, January 15, 1869, Jane T. Althon; the children are: Anna, Betsey, Christopher, Torger, Mary and Gertdane.

Candice Soine skriver: "Ole hired out to a very rough and unkind woodcutter. If he could not meet the quota for the day, he was not permitted to have supper. When he was 13 years old he cut his finger with an axe while he was chopping wood. It was cut so badly that only a small portion of flesh kept it from falling off. He put the two ends together as best he could, and bandaged the finger with strips of cloth. He did all of the aftercare himself and eventually, the cut healed and his finger remained stiff and crooked, but somewhat useful. Ole went from Michigan to Dane County in Wisconsin and was there from 1857-1869. Then he went to Iowa until 1862 and finally to Goodhue County in Minnesota in 1862. Ole enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 19 on December 12, 1863 and was mustered out on December 2, 1865. On January 15, 1869 Ole married Gertrude (Gjertrud) Elton and they had eight children. Gertrude died 21 September 1885 and Ole remarried in 1886. His second wife was Sigrid Loe Haugen who was a widow with three children. Ole and Sigrid had two children. Ole died on 13 March 1924. He was a naturalized citizen and he owned a farm, but could not speak English in 1900."

Ole's unit, the 2nd Minn. Cavalry, was fighting Sioux Indians until 1866 and was nowhere near Gettysburg.

The Vang migration records show that she left Vang for Voss in January of 1881 to get married.

Yvonne and her sources believe that Anna died after she and her children arrived in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, on May 12, 1890. Peter arrived in Quebec on Aug 10, 1889. Peter (and maybe Anna and the kids) went on to Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Called Anna Olson in her son Anton’s death certificate, the informant for which was her husband, and Anton’s father, Peter Hultgren of Clarissa.

Rose maintained that her uncle Tom Thompson and Tom’s wife Rangdi Ellestad (Andrew Ellestad’s sister) were 2nd cousins. _That_ implies that either Anne Endrisdatter Baggethun or Ole Vilhelmsen Ellestad were first cousins of Andrew Thompson or Rangdi Kvale. None of that is true.

In the 1900 census, he is probably Andrew Ellested living in Ward Twp, Todd County, born Mar 1861 in Norway. He is the husband of Ingebor and the father of Stella, John, and Cora. He came to the U.S. in 1883.

In the 1895 state census, he is living in Eureka Twp, Dakota County. The household consists of Andrew, 33, Ingebor M., 25, Estella, 4, John O., 2, and Cora, 6 months.

The informant for his death certificate was William Duda of Clarissa. (The Dudas lived one farm away from Endre and Ole in the 1910 census. William was 14 years old.) Endre had been in the U.S. for 38 years.

Endre died of stomach cancer.

Endre Olsen was confirmed in Vestre Slidre on 18 Jun 1876. The entry in church book says he was born on 14 Mar 1861, baptized on 28 Jul and there are some other notations that I don’t understand. His farm name is Bagetun Vang Ellestad and his parents were Ole Vilhelmson and Anne Endresdatter.

Sponsors for his baptism were Randi Wilhelmsdatter Lund, Gunhild Andersdatter Ellingboe, Sigrid Jørgensdatter Ellingboe, Endre Johnson Bagethun, and John Endressen Bagethun.

According to the Vestre Slidre church book, he was the son of Ole Vilhelmson and Anne Eivindsdatter (her last name is very hard to read). That Ole seems to have been born on the 20th of January and baptized on the 5th of May.

Funeral services were conducted at the Vang Lutheran Church on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 1:30 p.m. for Mrs. Marit T. Estrem, 77, who passed away Sunday afternoon at her home in Dennison after an illness of several years. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad, pastor of the Dennison Lutheran Parish officiated. Interment was at the Vang Cemetery. Pallbearers were: William Swarts, Gordon Ostenson, Even Halverson, A. J. Bestul, Phillip Hauge and L. C. Davenport. Mrs. Blikstad sand "Heaven Is My Home" and "Forbliv Hos Mig", with Mrs. Cyrus Midje as the organist. Marit Haugen, daughter of Thomas and Guri Haugen, was born November 20, 1876, in Valders, Norway and was baptized and confirmed in the Vang Church there. In 1900, at the age of 24, she came to this country and on July 3, 1905 was married to Nels J. Estrem, of Dennison, at Red Wing. They lived in Dennison and community ever since. Mr. Estrem, a son Alfred and a daughter, Mrs. Selma Carlson preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Herman (Thea) Vorlander of Dennison; two sons, Thomas of Dennison and Norman of St. Paul; one granddaughter, Bertha Carlson and one grandson, John Estrem of Dennison. He is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as “Ole Ellingboe Minneapolis.” He was a member of the Samband from 1902 to 1916.

In the 1919 city directory, he is a plumber and boards at 4428 44th Avenue S.

In the 1920 census, Ole, a widower, is living with the Henry Hanson family of 4428 44th Avenue S. in Minneapolis. He is shown as “nephew” along with his 13 year-old son Oscar who is also living with the Hansons. Ole was born in Norway and came to the U.S. in 1901. Ole is a plumber.

Ole, of 4428 44th Avenue in Minneapolis, was listed as the nearest relative of Harry Olson Ellingboe on Harry’s draft registration.

Seemingly related here is Bertha Ellingboe, b. ca 1896, in Norway, a tailoress, who lives with Conrad and Mary Hanson of 4420 43rd Avenue S. in Minneapolis. In the 1940 census, he and Bertha live at 3209 20th Avenue in south Minneapolis, a house that owns that is worth $4000. Ole is a caulker for an illuminating gas plant. This is the same house in which they both had lived five years earlier.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he is a mechanic for MGL. He and Bertha live at 3209 20th Avenue S.

He is the Ole Ellingboe, age 69, arriving in New York on September 20, 1948, aboard the S.S. Stockholm which had departed from Gothenburg, Sweden, on September 11th. Ole’s address is shown as 3209 20th Avenue South in Minneapolis. His U.S. passport was #159040.

He died leaving a widow Bertha who was the informant for his death certificate. According to that death certificate, Ole was a plumber/steam fitter for the Minneapolis Gas Company. His death date was qualified by “found” so he may have died at his residence, 3209 20th Avenue South, and Bertha may not have been living with him. His cause of death was coronary disease.

In the 1910 Norwegian census, as Marit Olsdatter Skøre, she is unmarried and living with her mother and siblings on Skøre 34/1.

She arrived in New York on April 3, 1915, aboard the S.S. Kristianiafjord which had departed Bergen on March 25th. Marit was single, age 25, occupation domestic. She gave her brother Böye Ellingboe of Vang, Valders, as her nearest relative in the country she had come from. She was traveling with her cousin Berit Andersdatter (10692).

Her obit said that she had lived in Minneapolis for 49 years and was a member of Central Lutheran Church.

Marith married Gullick BAKKEN on 17 May 1917 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Gullick (son of Augustinius Herbjornsen BJØRKHAUG and Aase Olsdatter) was born on 27 Oct 1884 in Rjukan, Tinn, Telemark, Norway; died on 21 Feb 1965 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota; was buried on 24 Feb 1965 in Sunset Memorial Park, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. According to Bjørn (per Brad), Bøye began using the surname Skøre to expedite the mail. Skøre is the name of the farm which is a part of the old Ellingbø.

The Norway Burial Index has a Bøye O Ellingbø dying in Vang on 20 May 1935.

The Vang bygdebok says that she moved to Oslo in 1912 where she first married Chr. Kvien, with whom she had 3 daughters, and later, in 1932, married Anders Stenberg, with whom she had one daughter. Nevertheless, all of her children were born in Vang.

In the 1910 Norwegian census, as Helge Olsen Skøre, he was living on Skøre 34/1 with his mother and his siblings.

In the 1916 Minneapolis city directory, he is Harry Ellingboe, a baker for Excelsior Baking Co., residing at the Hansons’ home (Harry’s aunt) at 4428 44th Avenue S. Also living at that same address was Ollie Ellingboe, a machinist at Excelsior Baking Co., who may be Harry’s brother Tollef (Tollie?). Listed elsewhere in the 1916 directory is Ole Ellingboe, the plumber (#6236), another of Harry’s brothers, who will eventually also come to live with the Hansons by the time of the 1920 census.

Harry registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Grand Rapids. He was born in Norway apparently. He listed his nearest relative as Ole Ellingboe (see #6236). Harry was a crane operator and electrician with the Olson (or Oliver) Iron Mining Company of Coleraine, Itasca County. Harry was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair.

In the 1920 census, Harry (as “Illenbo”) is a lodger with the Gullick and Mary Bakken (his sister) family at 757 8th Avenue South in Minneapolis. Harry came to the U.S. in 1916 and is a bookkeeper at a bank.

In the 1920 Minneapolis city directory, he is Harry Ellingboe, bookkeeper for the Harriet State Bank. He rooms at 757 8th Avenue S.

In the 1920 directory, he is still bookkeeper for the Harriet State Bank. He lives at 615 S 9th.

In the 1923 St. Paul city directory, he is a bookkeeper for Bannon’s. He lives at 229 Spruce.

In the 1924 St. Paul directory, he is still a bookkeeper for Bannon’s Dept. Store. He lives at 198 E 10th.

In the 1930 census, Harry is a baker in Minneapolis. He is a boarder with the Reuben Ericson family. He came to the U.S. in 1916.

In the 1930 Minneapolis city directory, he is Harry O Ellingboe, a helper at Paramount Pies Inc. He resides at 718 E 17th. That is, indeed, the address for Reuben R and Mabel Ericson. Reuben is a plumber for Bjorkman Bros.

He is included in the 1931 and 1932 St. Paul city directories as a helper for Paramount Pies Inc. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, he is a cook residing at 718 E 17th Street.

The 1933 St. Paul city directory lists him as a cook for Paramount Pies Inc. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1935 St. Paul city directory lists him as a fruit cook for Paramount Pies. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1937 Duluth city directory, he is a cleaner for N D Bort. He resides at 16 W 2nd.

In the 1940 census, he lived in Minneapolis as Harry Ellingboe, a 42 year-old single man born in Norway and having had two years of high school. He had lived in Duluth five years earlier. His occupation was bakers helper in a restaurant. He had earned $135 in 1939.

He registered for the draft on 14 Feb 1942 in Minneapolis. He worked for George Lundeen of Dassel, Minnesota.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was Harry O Ellingboe, a factory worker for Bemis. He resided at 104 Washington Avenue S.

He may have been married to #10778 although his death certificate says that he never married. (The Vang bygdebok says that he was married.)

The informant for his death certificate was Mrs. Alice Schmitz of 4946 Sherman in Minneapolis. Harry was not a veteran. He died of pulmonary edema and pneumonia. He worked at Bemus Brothers. His usual residence at the time of death was Cook Home of Rice Lake Road, Duluth, which wouldn’t seem to be the address of St. Mary’s Hospital. The SSDI says last residence was Minneapolis.

His obituary was published on p. 11A:1 of the September 14, 1977, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune:

Harry O. Ellingboe, 80, Cook Home, died Sunday in a Duluth hospital. He was born in Norway and came to Duluth in 1962 from Minneapolis. He was a retired laborer. Surviving is a niece, Alice Schmitz, Minneapolis.

He died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth.

The Vang bygdebok says that he died in 1971 and was married twice: first to Karine Sveen, who died but with whom he had one son, and second to Astrid Sørbo.

In the 1916 Minneapolis city directory, he may be the Ollie Ellingboe, a machinist for Excelsior Baking Co., who resides with his brother Harry at the Hansons at 4428 44th Avenue S.

In the 1918 city directory, Ollie Ellingboe is a plumber for Sanitor Construction Co and still lives with the Hansons at 4428 44th Avenue S.

In the 1950 census, he may be the Theodore Ellingboe, age 50, who is a lodger with a family in Minneapolis. He works, irregularly apparently, as a cab driver. His marital status is “separated.” This Theodore is shown as having been born in Minnesota, however.
