Berith is mentioned on p. 104 of the Vang B bygdebok but she is erroneously referred to there as “Randi.” The bygdebok identifies her mother as Randi Eiriksdotter Kattevøl.

In the 1880 U.S. census, she is Berit Pedersen, daughter of A. Pederson and his wife Randi of Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County. The rest of the children shown for that family are quite a bit younger although there is a daughter Kersti, age 10 (so born in 1869 or 1870) born in Norway. That implies that A. Pederson and Randi were together in Norway before coming to the U.S. in about 1870. Their 10-year-old son, Gustav, was born in Minnesota.

In the 1910 census, she is 48 years old, has been married for 29 years, and has had 15 children, 14 of whom are still living, and 13 of whom are still living at home. She came to the U.S. in 1872.

In 1933, she graduated from Benson High School in Minnesota and then attended the Minneapolis Business College. Ardel married Robert W. Dick on November 21, 1942. He was killed in Normandy, France on July 13, 1944 while serving as a medical in the United States Army. Ardel enlisted in the Women's Army Corps on September 23, 1944 and served as a nurses aid until January 26, 1946. She married Claude J. Breese on January 1, 1946 in Oak Lawn, Illinois. He died on September 24, 2000. Over the years, Ardel had numerous part-time jobs as waitress, store clerk, secretary, and nurses aid. Mostly she enjoyed being a homemaker and raising her children. She enjoyed taking family vacations, and camping. Ardel is survived by her daughter, Jenanne (Richard) Brown of Peoria, Arizona, son, Richard J. Monroeville, Ala. - Funeral services for Alvin Quale, 96, of Monroeville, formerly of Tioga, N.D., will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 5, at First Lutheran Church in Tioga. The Rev. Chris Montgomery will officiate and burial will be in United Cemetery, Tioga. Alvin Gunther Quale was born July 4, 1904, in Benson, Minn., to Ole and Julia (Overbo) Quale. He was raised on their homestead northwest of Ray, where he attended Dillon School and Ray High School, graduating in 1925. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1920 at Rainbow Valley Lutheran Church. In 1928, Alvin became the Standard Oil bulk agent in Tioga, retiring from that job in 1963. He was united in marriage to Jennie Eskeland on June 21, 1933. They subsequently made their home on north main in Tioga for 64 years and raised their three children there. During his years in Tioga, he was active in the Volunteer Fire Department, served on the Tioga School Board, was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and was active in the First Lutheran Church. After Alvin's retirement in 1963, they spent a number of years traveling to various places during the winter months. The Quales moved to Alabama to be close to their daughter, LaDonna, in 1997. Alvin died at the Englewood Health Care Center in Monroeville on Tuesday, May 29, 2001. He is survived by two daughters, Verona Skabo and her husband, Ron, of Lakewood, Colo., and LaDonna Herring and her husband, Dick, of Monroeville, Ala.; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie; son Corvin; one granddaughter; his parents; five brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services for Henry I. Kasa, 71, of 306 E. Woodley St., Northfield, were held on Oct. 30 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Northfield with the Rev. Robert Hanson and the Rev. R. C. Reinholtzenn officiating. Interment took place in the Vang Cemetery. Mrs. Roy Matheson, organist, accompanied soloist, the Rev. Robert Hansen. Henry I. Kasa was born on March 20, 1900, to Iver and Randi Holien Kasa in Warsaw Township. He attended rural schools in Warsaw Township, moved to Northfield as a young man and had resided there since. He was united in marriage to Helen Haugen on Dec. 8, 1927, at Faribault. He was employed as a custodian at Carleton College for 18 years after which he worked as a custodian at Washington School for 29 years, retiring in 1969; however working part time at the Grand Theater. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Mr. Kasa, who passed away at the Northfield City Hospital on Oct. 27, is survived by his widow, Helen; two sons, Roger Kasa of Huron, S.D., and Jerry Kasa of Northfield; seven grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Kasa of Dennison and by other relatives d friends. Signe Grace Eleanor Bakken Huseth was born in rural Dennison on Dec. 14, 1920, to Thea (Holien) and Abraham Bakken. She was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church, Dennison. She graduated from Kenyon High School in 1939. She was united in marriage to Olaf Huseth on Sept. 26, 1942. Together they raised three children on the family farm.

Grace was an inherently gifted artist and musician. She instilled her love of the arts in her children and her companions. Painting was her passion. She was inspired by the beauty in nature and painted many landscapes and still lifes. She loved to play the organ and the piano, and she continued to do so even into her 90s. Her music filled the rooms and hearts of many. She was a dedicated wife and mother. She prepared five meals a day every day of the year. She baked fresh bread every week, washed laundry with a wringer washer, and hung clothes on the line. And when the day's work was completed, she picked up her paint brushes and made time to tap the artist within. Grace loved to share her early memories with her family: what life was like when she was a young girl in the 1920s and '30s, walking to District 128 Schoolhouse, having family picnics in the woods with sketchpad in hand. She was able to pass along those memories up to the very end of her life so that the stories could be preserved for the next generations.

She is survived by son Ronald Huseth and wife Diana of Dennison; daughters Ann Percuoco and husband Michael of Avon, Minn., Marjorie Huseth and husband Brian Powers of Minneapolis; grandchildren Jonathan (Melissa) Huseth, Kristina (Kent) Wedeven, Jeremy Huseth, Emily Percuoco, Kate (Eduardo Cardenas) Percuoco, Nick (Lindsay) Percuoco; great-grandchildren Hailey, Rachel, Luke, and James Huseth, Quinn Wedeven, Felix Cardenas Percuoco, Benjamin Percuoco.

Helen Joan Hanson was born December 19, 1932, the daughter of Herbert and Evelyn Arneson in Granite Falls. She was baptized and confirmed at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church. She attended Granite Falls High School and graduated in 1950.

Helen was united in marriage to Glen Hanson on December 26, 1952 at the Granite Falls Lutheran Church. She was a wonderful mother to her three sons. She taught Sunday School, loved being a part of the Altar Guild, member of the Ladies Guild who made many quilts for both the community and for missions. She was a Den Mother for her son's Cub Scout Troops, Co-Sponsor and Sponsor for Yellow Medicine County Relay for Life Breast Cancer Awareness Rally for 4 years. Worked as a clerk during elections.

Helen was an avid sports enthusiast of all Minnesota sports teams and especially when son’s Glen, Jeff and Gary played baseball in the summers while being coached by their father Glen. She also enjoyed going for walks, working in her flower beds, loved her kitties and loved to attend her grandchildren’s activities and later years loved seeing and interacting with her 12 Great Grans.

She is survived by sons, Dr. Glen D. (Lisa), Jeffrey L., Gary L. (Kathleen); grandchildren Megan (Steve) Henry, Charlotte and Stella Scrivner; Alison (Jon) Kenny Miller; Gary T. (Olescia) Holton, Landry & Oliva Hanson; Kristina (Brandon) Dominic & Mirabelle Smith; Brenda (Travis) Barrett, Parker & Emmett Sertich; sister-in-law Marilyn Hanson; brother-in-law and sister-in law, Charles & Lois Waller; and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her close friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by Glen O. Hanson (husband), Herbert and Evelyn Arneson (parents) and Merle Arneson (brother).

She attended UW Whitewater Teachers College and MATC. She was united in marriage to Russel R. Ebert on March 19, 1953. Together they made Madison their home, where they raised 6 children.

Ruth was a loving wife, mother, sister, daughter and a loyal friend. She was gracious, generous, witty and very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Bingo, antiques & creating miniature Christmas Trees. She was known for her high fashion but also loved fishing with her husband. Ruth worked at Stevens House of Gifts & American Family Insurance.

She will be remembered & missed by her loving family & friends. She is survived by her children Daniel Ebert, Timothy (Kim) Ebert, Nancy Juckem, Laura (Pete) Armstrong, Lisa (Terry) Brennan-Choate, Bobby (Tina) Ebert. Grand-children, Michelle, Sarah, Catherine, Lindsey, Chris, Preston, Logan, Libby, Tessa & Kayla. Great-Grandchildren, Piper, Roman, Sutton, Holden and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary Alice Ehlers, age 72, of Dallas, died on Thursday evening, July 13, 2006, at her home. Mary was born in Madison on May 11, 1934, daughter of Olney and Helen Quale. Her childhood in Madison was a simple, joyful life highlighted by adventures with her brother, Paul and sister, Ruth. A National Honor Society graduate of Madison East High School, Mary went on to receive a degree in music, with honors, from the University of Wisconsin in 1955. Married in 1956 to David O. Ehlers, also from Madison, they moved their growing family to South Florida. Mary was an active participant in her six children's lives and continued her church activities as well as a fondness for ballroom dancing. Mary moved her family to Irving, Texas, in 1977 and worked as a medical receptionist for Dr. Georgia Doyle. After retiring from DeVry University in 2001, Mary became very involved in activities at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church of Dallas and traveled often to see her children and grandchildren across the country. She was a beloved sister, mother, wife, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. Survivors include former father-in-law, S.C. Ehlers of Madison; former husband, David O. Ehlers of Las Vegas, Nev.; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Judith Ehlers of Dansville, Mich.; daughter, Karen Ehlers of Euless, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Deborah Ehlers of Boca Raton, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Richard DeYoung of Houston, Texas; son, Scott Ehlers of Dallas, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Russ Ebert of Madison; former sister-in-law, Phyllis Quale of Madison; along with five nieces, four nephews and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olney and Helen Quale; her brother, Paul Quale; her son, Steven Ehlers; and her granddaughter, Nicole Morgan DeYoung. Scott Allen Quale, age 65, of Cambridge, MN, passed away on Saturday, March 12th. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Scott was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Glen and Betty Quale. The family moved to Dalbo, Minnesota, during Scott’s later grade school years where they began a dairy farm. He was the second of five boys. Scott and his brothers helped their dad with the milking every morning and evening. Scott graduated from Princeton High School in 1975. Scott was married in 1978 to Vicky Swanson at Salem Lutheran church in Dalbo. In July of 1978 he and Vicki lost their first two babies. This was devastating to them both. They later had two more children whom they raised together.

Scott worked at Federal Cartridge in Anoka for many years and then began working as a nursing assistant working with seniors and Alzheimers patients. Scott had a love for horses. He began showing Arabian horses first as a hobby then as an amateur handler. He even showed and trained professionally for a short time. Scott was later divorced. He moved to Minneapolis and worked for the State of Minnesota as a Behavioral Support Analyst, where he worked until retirement. Scott enjoyed being with animals his whole life. He loved working, training and showing horses and later training and showing his cocker spaniel. He also took up 2 step dancing and loved it and enjoyed playing the game of Cricket. Scott loved his Children and his grandchildren very much and enjoyed spending every minute he could with them. In his own words "They make my life complete".

Scott will be dearly missed by his daughter, Amanda Quale of Winter Wisconsin; son, Jeff (Monica Moore) Quale of Brook Park; grandchildren Noelle, Grace, Ethan, Avia, Alaina, Andrew, Emma and Sam; brothers Craig (Sandy) Quale of Dalbo; Todd (Michele Micheals) Quale of Milaca; Troy (Trinette Sohlstrom) Quale of Milaca; and many other family and many dear friends. Morine G. Hollen, age 83, of Sunburg, passed away at his home on Monday morning, Oct. 19 following an extended illness.

Morine Glen Hollen was born on September 8, 1937, on the family farm near Sunburg, the son of Ruben and Laura (Gunderson) Hollen. He grew up in Sunburg, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and received his education in the Sunburg community.

At the age of 17, Morine enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1958. On October 19, 1955, in Mainstockheim, Germany, Morine was united in marriage to Ingeborg Irene Schneider. They lived in Germany for one year before moving to Minneapolis where Morine was employed at Honeywell Corp.

In 1965 they moved to the family farm near Sunburg and continued the family farm operation. Morine was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and served on the church council and cemetery board for many years. Morine enjoyed hunting, fishing, classic cars, traveling to Germany to visit relatives and the simple farm life.

He is survived by his two children, Heidi Hollen (and Dave Slavens) of Shoreview and Chris Hollen of Sunburg; one sister, Ethel (and Gene) Melgren of St. Louis Park; three brothers, Gordon Hollen of Glenwood, Kermit (and Franny) Hollen of Fridley and Lowell (and Mary) Hollen of Brooten, and his beloved canine companion, Max, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ingeborg in 2018; one brother, Harold and three sisters, Audrey, Arlene and Rosella.

Lula C. Engel, 83, of Crabtree died Monday at home of natural causes.

She was born in Kenneth, Minn., to Kanut and Bergeit Oldre.

She moved as a child to South Dakota. Then in 1936, at the age of 14, she moved to Oregon with her family and settled in Albany.

She later met Donald E. Engel, and they married on May 28, 1948, in Albany. Together they had three children and Lula worked at home. From 1971 to 1998, they lived in Alsea and since then in Crabtree.

She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Albany. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, camping trips and spending time with her family.

Survivors include husband Don of Crabtree; daughters Eileen (Robert) Fligg of Troutdale and Karen (Gary) Halliwell of Crabtree; son Darrell of Crabtree; brother Melvin Oldre of Albany; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Arnold Hoyme of Wetaskiwin died peacefully in the early morning hours of November 14, 2016 with loved ones nearby.

In addition to farming, Arnold operated businesses in feedmill management, ceramics, real estate, insurance and more. He continued to work into his nineties. He was a life-long member of the Lions Club, proudly supporting their causes and community activities.

The family of Joyce Eleanor Chant announce her passing on September 11, 2019 at the age of 92 years. 

Joyce was born on November 11, 1926 to Cora and Abel Lyseng, the third child of eight. She spent her childhood on a farm in the Armena area. Joyce met and married Austin Chant in 1945. They spent most of their married life on the family farm just outside of Camrose with their four children. 

After Austin passed away, Joyce stayed on the farm for about three years and then decided to move into a mobile home in Camrose. She began to find it more difficult to live on her own so, in 2009, Joyce moved into Bethany Meadows where she remained until her passing.

Joyce always enjoyed singing and was a loyal choir member in her church for most of her adult life. She was also an active member of the Camrose Sweet Adelines chapter for several years. Joyce also loved her gardens. She took great pride in the proliferation of flowers and plants that she grew. 

For many years Joyce was a very active and involved member of the Ladies of The Loyal Order of the Moose reaching the position of Regent.

As time marched on, Joyce faced both declining physical health and advancing dementia with strength and determination. She was always a fighter and never gave up until she just couldn’t fight anymore.
 
Left to cherish her memory are her children Judy (Jeff) Voshell of Summerland B.C., Deanna (Lorne) Bragg of Ardrossan, and Greg Chant of Camrose; son-in-law George (Kelly) Jason of Ponoka; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother Gerald (Joyce) Lyseng; and sisters Marion Ostrem and Audrey Davis.
 
Joyce was predeceased by her husband Austin; daughter Linda; brother Alton Lyseng; and sisters Eunice Morris, Ruby Atema, and Berdeen Link.
