Ingeborg's entire family emigrated to America, arriving in New York on the ship Ørnen July 15, 1850. The family settled in Winneshiek county in Iowa where Knud was a farmer. From an article in the Minot Daily News, November 26, 2021:
ALEXANDER – The Haugen Ranch of Alexander was honored recently with the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association’s Rancher of the Year award.
The award was presented at a special awards banquet held during the organization’s annual convention in Fargo this past September. Seventy-five-year NDSA members and ranch proprietors Les and Shelly, along with their son Lane and daughter-in-law Kristan, run the cow-calf operation in McKenzie County.
In 1912, Lars and Christine (Dahl) Haugen homesteaded Haugen Ranch, 15 miles south of Alexander. They had made the voyage from Vang, Valdres, Norway, unwed at the time, and arrived at the port in Boston, Mass., one month apart from each other. In November 1912, Lars filed for land in Bowline Township in northwestern North Dakota and he began living on the land shortly after. Lars and Christine were married March 17, 1915. They began their married life on an empty prairie with empty hands, ready to work. In 1916, the land was officially patented as their own.
“One-hundred-and-five years later, Haugen Ranch lives on,” said Shelly, noting the family’s centennial celebration, which took place in 2016. “It has been fun and honorable to see Lars’ and Christine’s vision when they settled here mold into something they could only dream of. We keep building and we strive to be better each day.”
Lars and Christine had three children, all born on the homestead. Their sons, Orville and Luther, were farmers and ranchers living south of Alexander and their daughter Inga became a nurse and moved to town.
Luther Haugen married Florence and, in 1946, they purchased the family’s ranch and became North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) members. In 1949, Luther relocated the ranch to its present location, two miles north of the original homestead. The homestead’s outbuildings still function as usable facilities today.
Luther passed away at the age of 50 in 1972. Florence and their four children, Les, Judy, Laura and Kay, continued to live and work on the ranch after Luther’s death. Florence retired in 1980 and, in 1981, Les and Shelly began purchasing the ranch from Florence and Les’s sisters. Les and Shelly continued to expand the ranching and farming operations, growing and adding acreage with each generation. They made it a point with their three children, Callie, Lane and Tess, to instill the tight-knit, hardworking family values of the western heritage. Les and Shelly give a lot of credit to the success of the ranch to their children for their hard work and continued dedication to the operation.
Les and Shelly introduced Charolais cattle into the commercial herd. The cattle herd presently consists of black and black baldy cows and still uses Angus and Charolais genetics. They calve in April, wean in the fall and sell to repeat private buyers. In addition, they keep black replacement females when able.
The Haugen family also hosts a large branding each year. “We do it the traditional way — with a rope and drag,” said Les. “Our neighbors come from all around. They play a vital part in our operation on branding day, and every other day of the year.” The Haugens credit not only the family for good help, but the indispensable and strong neighbor relationship the community around them has. “We are family-oriented and neighbor-oriented,” said Kristan. “Everyone around here helps each other and makes the world go round. It’s truly special.”
Today, Les, Shelly, Lane and Kristan operate Haugen Ranch and hold the Haugen Ranch’s NDSA membership. They’ve been a member for many years because the NDSA has the best of North Dakota cattle producers in mind, Les said.
Before returning to the ranch full-time, Lane received a welding degree and worked in the oilfield, while staying active on the family’s operation. Now, that education serves as a means for making the ranch more self-sufficient. “From being able to do the repairs that are necessary to raising our own feed and making our own hay, we prefer to be self-sufficient in every way possible,” said Lane. “Everyone has a hand in the operation to do so, including our children, Henri and Ledger.” The family also said, with self-sufficiency, comes the ability to be sustainable and push the ranch’s goals to the next level. “We improve every day and strive to make things better,” said Lane.
“Being a rancher is a proud way to live,” said Les. “You make the best of your cattle, make a living and spend time with your family that is alongside you every day.” The next generation agreed as Kristan noted, “We are able to set our own goals and be self-motivated. We take pride every day in what we do.”
Les and Shelly look forward to seeing the next generation — their eight grandchildren, Hadley, Harley, Rio, River, Henri, Ledger, Tay and Rye — playing their own roles on the ranch and in life.
The Haugen Ranch is a North Dakota Centennial Heritage Ranch, receiving the honor in 2016. The Haugen family is a member of the NDSA, MonDak Stockgrowers Association, McKenzie County Grazing Association, North Dakota Farm Bureau, American Quarter Horse Association and MonDak Quarter Horse Association.
“The Haugen Ranch embodies North Dakota’s ranching spirit and work ethic,” said NDSA President Jeff Schafer, a New Rockford, N.D., cow-calf producer and feeder. “They are deserving of this prestigious award. Congratulations, Haugen Ranch.”

BEN KNUDTSON FROZEN TO DEATH
The Christmas festivities of our neighboring town of Carpenter were sadly broken into by the tragic death of one of her citizens, Mr. Ben Knudtson, who died about noon from the effects of having spent the night out - lying beside the railroad track in that awful cold.
Mr. Knudtson came back from Lyle on the 8:20 train Christmas Eve. He had not been up to Lyle to buy either hardware or dry goods, but had already celebrated too much for his own good. When he got off the train he started for his home, which was about a mile northwest of Carpenter; but instead of going around the road, he started cross lots intending to go north on the railroad till he crossed the bridge, then take a path through the woods for home. He only got across the bridge when he fell and rolled down the high embankment, striking on a lot of rocks which lay at the bottom. It is quite evident that he was considerably injured by the fall or he could have managed to have gotten up and out of there. But there he lay during all that bitter, cold night.
At about eleven o'clock Knudtson's son, Ed, about 17 years of age, in company with Ed Edwarson, a boy of about his own age crossed the bridge and heard someone calling to them to hold on but they thought it was a tramp trying to waylay them and they ran as fast as their legs could carry them, and went over to Gilbert Severson's close by and stayed all night. The next morning Severson and Edwards went back to the bridge and, alas, there lay Knudtson, not dead but pretty near it, though he was still conscious and in fact, remained so until just before he died.
They took him home and immediately called Dr. Culmsee. The doctor arrived there about eleven o'clock, but alas he was beyond the reach of medical aid. His injuries were too severe to be helped and he died within an hour. His hands, face and legs were frozen terribly, and he was suffering from internal injuries, evidently caused by falling down the embankment.
The funeral was held on Saturday, conducted at the Deer Creek N. L. Church by Reverend J. Olsen.
It was just eight years ago to a day, that his brother, Theo, came to an untimely death in the same woods, and not a mile from the same place.

Knute used the surname, Lee, a shortened version of Lien. He married Synneva Olsdatter Borsheim (Susan) on September 21, 1875, in Springfield Township. They had eight children: four sons and four daughters. The first four were born in Iowa. In 1882, the family moved to the Village of Ada in Norman County, Minnesota, which is where the younger four children were born.
Knute was elected as the third sheriff of Norman County, Minnesota. He served in that role from 1884 to 1890.
In church records, Knute's first name is spelled "Knud" and his last name is "Lien," which is his original Norwegian surname. (His family acquired this name in Norway by virtue of residence on the Lien farm.)
The name of the Septon farm where he was born changed officially to "Lien" in 1830. The meaning of the name "Lien" is a grassy or wooded hillside. (The root word is "li.") The farm name has also been called "Lii," "Lié," or "Lia."
Gullik's sons, Knud (Knute) and Ole, used and passed down the surname as "Lee."

103. | Bertha (Betsy) LIEN (51.Berit4, 18.Knut3, 6.Berit2, 1.Ingeborg1) was born on 2 Dec 1857 in Winneshiek County, Iowa; died on 1 Aug 1929 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Notes:
In the 1900 census, she had had five children, four still living.
The following is from her Find A Grave entry, as created by her great-granddaughter, Connie:
Bertha Lien was born on a small farm near Decorah, Iowa, the sixth child of 14 born to Gullik Knutsen Lien (1815-1903) and Berit Knusdatter Austreim (1826-1904). Her parents had emigrated in 1850 from Vang, Valdres, Norway. Bertha attended public schools in the area and the local parish school. She later attended the Breckenridge Normal School at Decorah for two years and then taught school for one year in the district schools of Springfield township.
While attending school at the parsonage in Decorah, Ole Joris Norby may have worked at the Lien farm. After his graduation and a call to Dakota Territory, Ole left for Yankton County and sent for Bertha. Bertha got on the train, bringing all of her belongings in trunks, mostly clothes and a few quilts, and left Iowa to meet him. Once she arrived, they rode forty miles on Indian ponies, riding in grass over their heads, to the minister's house in Websterville, Dakota Territory, to be married on 14 Sep 1879. The day following the wedding they traveled on in a "single-seated" buggy drawn by two small Indian ponies to the pioneer settlement where they would live in Turner County.
As the years passed, she became reconciled to frontier conditons, but Bertha never wholly accepted the view of those who professed to see beauty in the prairie. She gained experience and greater assurance in her role as pastor's wife. Parish work was not then a highly organized system so her functions were largely those of an ever-ready hostess, Sunday School teacher, leader of the Ladies' Aid Society, parish visitor, friend and confidant. In 1893, she and Ole left the frontier to move closer to good schools for their four children, leaving one infant son buried in the cemetery at Sims, North Dakota. They moved first to Chicago and then to Winchester, Wisconsin, before returning again to the west where O. J. served as minister in Havre, Montana, and Aberdeen, South Dakota. In 1923 he retired and they moved to Minneapolis to be near their son, Joseph and his family.
Bertha's health had been poor with heart trouble for several years but her strong will had sustained her. In the end, her strength failed and Bertha died on 1 Aug 1929 at 71 years old. Her obituary states, "Her natural inclination and devotion to service made her an ideal pastor's wife and all with whom she came in contact remember her as the embodiment of the precepts which her husband taught from the pulpit. She was an ideal wife, a loving mother, and a true servant of the Master."
Bertha married Ole Joris NORBY in 1879. Ole was born on 26 May 1855 in Klæbu, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway; died on 26 Apr 1930 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
