    Vang C, p. 331.

Jim calls this person Ole Trondsen Ellingbøe, I5827, in his Ellingboe tree.

Jim calls this person Ola Trondsen Tørstad (Bunde) (Ellingbøe), I1856, in his VS.

The researcher finneylinda on Ancestry calls him Ole Thompson Ellingbo.

Listed right before Ole Evensen (#3683) in the Vang churchbook birth records.

On 6 Jan 1838 Ole Tronson Torstad, 32, married Ingebor Andersdatter Ellingboe, 23, in Vang. His father was Tron Olssen Torstad and her father was Anders E. Ellingboe.

He is called Ole Thronsen Torstad in the birth records of all of his children except Ingeborg. For her he is called Ole Thronsen Tvedt. He is called Ole Thronsen Torstad in his family’s emigration record.

The Vang church book shows that Ole, 53, and Ingeborg, 45, emigrated from Vang with their children in March of 1858. The children leaving with them are: Marith, 18, Sigrid, 16, Anders, 11, Randi, 8, Endre, 4, and Ingeborg, 3/4. (Sigrid must have changed her mind or else the scribe got confused. Sigrid did not emigrate. Nor did Marith.)

In his letter to Norway in 1866 (see Jim Ellingboe’s site), Ole offered to pay for Helge Olsson’s (#6218) passage to America by guaranteeing any loan that Helge had to secure. Helge never emigrated. In the letter, Ole Thronsen signed his name Ole Throndsen Ellingböe.

In the 1870 census, he, as Ole Thompson, and his family are farming in Silver Lake Twp, Worth County, Iowa. Ole’s real estate is worth $1500 and his personal property $860. The family consists of, Ole, 68, Isabel Thompson, 57, Andrew Thompson, 22, Rachel Iverson, 19, Nels Iverson, 22, Henry Thompson, 16, Isabel Thompson, 13, and Nels Anderson, 9. Everyone had been born in Norway.

Ole’s agricultural holdings are recorded in the 1870 census’s “non-population” schedule. He owns a total of 115 acres, 30 of which are “improved.” The cash value of his farm is $1500 and, for its implements, $200. He has four horses, 2 “milch” cows, 1 other cattle, 9 sheep, and two swine, the total value of which is $550. For the year ending June 1, 1870, he produced 259 bushels of spring wheat, 100 bushels of Indian corn, 80 bushels of oats, 35 lbs. of wool, 50 bushels of Irish potatoes, 100 lbs. of butter, 30 tons of hay, and 8 gallons of molasses. The value of animals slaughtered or sold for slaughter was $40 and the total estimated value of all farm production was $480. This value was neither particularly high nor particularly low when compared to other farms on the same page of the Silver Lake Twp census schedule.

Katherine locates Ole and Ingebor Thompson in Rock County in the 1875 Minnesota state census. The family lives in Martin Twp, not far from the farm of Nels and Randa Iverson. Ole, 73, and Ingebor, 64, are living with Henry Thompson, 21, Viljir, a 19 year-old female, and Belle Thompson, 17.

In the 1880 census, Ole, 87, and Isabelle, 67, are living in McCook County, South Dakota, with their daughter Isabelle, 22, and next to or with their son Andrew and his family.

In the 1885 Minnesota state census, he is probably the 84 year-old Ole Thompson living with or next door to H O Thompson in Nunda Twp, Freeborn County.

The following was originally prepared by Katherine and can be found at Find A Grave:

Ole Thurston Trondsen & his wife Engeborg Andersdatter both lived at Vang in Valdres, Norway. He worked as a farm hand and at the carpenter trade in this area.

In the month of June 1858, Ole and his family sailed from Christiana (Oslo) to America. The children who made the trip were Anders (Andrew), Henry, Rachael and Engeborg. A daughter Mary remained in Norway. Their sail ship furnished its passengers only with water and no fires for cooking were permitted, so all food had to be cooked or prepared before boarding and was eaten cold. When they arrived at Milwaukee, WI, via Quebec, the St Lawrence river and the Great Lakes, their food and money was all gone and the parents had to work at anything and for what they could get to sustain the family. The entire family walked by stages to Calmer, Iowa, working for food as they journeyed.

At Calmer, Ole found steady work and here they remained until in 1869, when the family moved by oxcart to Worth County Iowa, near the Minnesota line and northwest of the present village of Northwood, Iowa. Ole took up a claim on government land. It is near that farm that the Silver Lake Lutheran Church is located and the family were probably charter members of the original church.

The children in the family decided that they needed a more Americanized name so they called themselves "Thompson" from their fathers "Trondsen", while Ole took the name Ellingboe from the estate in Norway from which he came. This was often done by Norwegian immigrants on the premises that it helped identify them with others from the same area and also added some importance to the bearer of the name.

About 1874, the family moved on to Rock County (Hills), Minnesota, in the southwestern part of the state. Here Ole bought a farm and remained until his death. Henry Thompson remained in Iowa where he became a prosperous farmer with lands and elegant farm home near Northwood, Iowa.

Ole was over six feet tall and a large boned powerful man. He had curly dark brown hair and blue eyes. He was an easy going, pleasant and always helpful individual.

Two Pioneer Settlers Called by Death – Grandma Nels Iverson died at her home Wednesday morning…Obit. Next week.

    December 5, 1929
GRANDMA IVER LAID AT REST NOVEMBER 30: Hills and community are again called upon to mourn the death of a pioneer mother, Mrs. Nels Iverson, who passed away at her home on November 27, 1929, at the age of 81 years and 23 days.
Grandma was born in Vang, Valders, Norway on November 4, 1848, and at the age of eight came to his country.
Mrs. Iverson, whose maiden name was Rangdi Olson-Ellingboe, was united in marriage to Mr. Nels Iverson, at St. Ansgar, Iowa, on July 16, 1868. From this time until 1871 the family lived in Winnesbeik County, Iowa, when her husband made the long journey to Martin township and took up a homestead one mile southeast of Hills in 1871, then returned east and brought his family here the next year - 1872.
Truly, the title "Grandma" belongs rightly to Mrs. Iverson as they were the first family to settle in this vicinity, and were charter members of the former Synod Church in Hills.
Her husband died on Christmas Eve, 1926, and she is survived by the following children - Mrs. Anna Jensen, Hills; Iver, of Montrose, S.D., Ole N., of Hills; Mrs. John Larson, of Westport, Minn; Rudolph, of Hills; Mrs. P. Severtson, and Mrs. Iver Wangsness of Sioux Falls.
All the children were present at the funeral.
Grandma, up until three days before her death, was able to attend to household duties when she was stricken with heart trouble that was the cause of her passing away.
Rev. Theo. Rodsater conducted services in the home at 1:30 pm., on November 30, and at 2:00 pm services were held at Bethlehem Church, when Rev. Rodsater spoke in English and Norwegian.
The Hills Glee club was also present at the Church and rendered two songs appropriate for the occasion.
The remains were carried to their final resting place in Bethlehem Cemetery by six grandsons, namely Nathan, Earnest and Lawrence Iverson of Montrose, S. Dak., Kenneth and Eugene Iverson, and Nels Jensen, of Hills.
Relatives from a distance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Larson, of Westport, Minn., Mrs. L. H. Larson, of Colton, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Iver Iverson, of Montrose, S. Dak, Mrs. Earl Charles of Omaha.
It is impossible for the younger generation to realize the hardships these pioneers had to endure. The telephone, radio, auto, electric lights and hundreds of other conveniences we enjoy today were then unknown. Much of their trading was done at Sibley, Iowa, and today we think it quite a little journey in a swift moving auto, then to look back at the time when the Iverson’s and other early settlers had to make the journey during the winter months either with horses or ox team to Sibley for the necessities of life.
As we have said before, and in time it will surely come to pass, that monuments will be erected in honor of the early pioneers. This is not much, but it's the only method whereby we can, in a small way, show our respect and esteem to the early settlers who came here and opened the country that we might live in ease and comfort.
Long live the memory of Grandma Iverson

Katherine has this life story of Henry (originally posted by Shirl2sg):

This is the life of Henry O. Thompson. Henry O. Thompson, native of Valders, Norway, came to the new world with his parents in the early '50s, when he was a lad of five years, the voyage being made in one of the old-time sailing ships which was nine weeks upon the water ‘ere anchor was dropped in the harbor of Quebec. They made their way westward by way of the Great Lakes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and for a short time were residents of that state, but Iowa proved their ultimate destination. They located in Decorah, Iowa, where they remained for a year, and then traveled across the country with ox teams to Silver Lake township, Worth county, where they purchased one hundred and twenty acres of land. It was a wild tract, entirely destitute of buildings or improvements of any kind. A log cabin was built and the family began life in true pioneer style, sharing in all the hardships and privations incident to settlement on the frontier. After a time the grandfather sold the property in Worth county and removed to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, there purchasing a farm upon which he lived for a number of years. He afterward took up his abode in Munda township, Freeborn county, Minnesota, where the grandparents died at the home of their son, Henry Thompson. The latter was a youth of seventeen years when he started out in the business world on his own account. He left Silver Lake township, Worth county, to make his way to the territory of Wyoming, traveling partly by rail and partly on foot. At length he reached Cheyenne, where he was employed as a cook in the government mess house for eleven months. He afterward returned to Silver Lake township and was married to Miss Velger Olson. He next removed to Rock county, Minnesota, where he took up a claim of one hundred and sixty acres of government land that as yet had not known the touch of the plow. Upon that place he built a sod house, which he occupied for two years. He then returned to Silver Lake township and his wife soon afterward became ill and passed away. Later Mr. Thompson wedded Isabel Johnson and bought a farm in Silver Lake township comprising ninety-one acres, upon which he lived for three years. He then traded that property with Ryer Johnson for his present farm of two hundred and forty acres in Munda township, Freeborn county, Minnesota, where he still makes his home. He has devoted practically his entire life to general agricultural pursuits and is still engaged in the cultivation and development of his farm. He has reached the age of sixty-seven years, while his wife is now sixty-four years of age.

Katherine has this obit for Henry (originally posted by Shirl2sg). As Katherine clarifies: “There is another Henry Thompson of the same birth year resident near Lake Mills who is married to a Betsy Leikvold. This may be the source of the confusion.”

In the 1880 census, she is living with her parents in McCook County, South Dakota, next to, probably contiguously with, the Andrew Thompson family. One of the boarders on Andrew’s farm is Lewis Larson, 25, her future husband.

Shown in the 1910 census as having had 9 children, all 9 still living.

Katherine has this life story of Ingeborg (originally posted by Shirl2sg):

Ingeborg (Isabelle) Thomson was born in Vang in Valders, Norway July 18, 1857. Her parents were Ole Thurston Trondsen and Ingeborg Anders daughter.  Her parents are interred in cemetery of the Silver Lake Lutheran church about 4 miles east of Emmons, Minnesota. Ingeborg was about one year old when her parents migrated to America and she was with them on their westward trek across Wisconsin to Calmer, Iowa. The family lived there during the Civil War and she told her children about the Union soldiers passing through on their way south.

When Ingeborg was about twelve (1869) the family moved to Worth County, Iowa, and she later recalled fishing in nearby lakes (Silver Lake being one) and playing with the Winnebago Indian children, that tribe being nearby. When she was about seventeen the family moved on to Rock County, Minnesota, where she found work with the family of a lumber man named Roderick and with them she later moved to the new town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where work had begun on a railroad to link that town with the east. She was governess to the Roderick children.

At the age of twenty-three Ingeborg took up a claim next to one of her brothers, Andrew, about two miles southeast of the present village of Montrose, South Dakota. This place was about one and one-half miles north of the claim of her future husband. Ingeborg, having had schooling in America, did much in helping Lars with his education. Besides mothering nine children she spent long hard hours at keeping house, gardening, raising chickens and at times even helping with the farm work by mowing or driving the horses pulling the reaper.

Despite low prices on farm produce, grasshoppers and sometimes serious droughts, the couple prospered. Their principal source of income was from sale of livestock. By leasing grazing land on the nearby hills they would run up to 150 cattle and they also raised sheep, and hogs.

Lars’s health began to fail about 1904 and the doctors could not diagnose his ailment so, in September, 1909, the couple and younger children moved to Colton a village about twenty-one miles east of Montrose. Lars seemed to overcome his ailment and finally died when he was almost ninety-three years old. He was proceeded in death by Ingeborg by about twelve years. She was then seventy-nine.

Ingeborg was about 5 ft 8-1/2 in tall and was always slim. She had reddish brown hair and blue eyes. Cause of death - cancer of digestive organs. She was always quiet, tolerant and mild mannered to all except in rare occasions in defense of her children, all of whom were born at home without aid of a medical doctor and only a midwife to attend. While Lars was given to outburst of sometimes violent temper, she always remained calm and although she permitted him, as head of the family, to think that his was the final say in family and business matters, there was no doubt that her subtle influence was ever present. She doctored and nursed her children to healthy adulthood and still found time to spend many days and nights watching over and nursing ailing neighbors. Both Lars and Ingeborg were of the Lutheran faith and with the nearest church of that denomination about eight miles distant, the father often held Christian services at home while they lived on the farm. All the children were baptized and confirmed as Lutherans.

Katherine has this obit for Ingeborg (originally posted by Shirl2sg):

In the 1880 census, he was a farmer in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County.

From the book - RICE COUNTY FAMILIES. PUB. 1981:

Flaten Families, 1868--. Ole Flaten and Maren Wangensten Stelle migrated from Valdres, Norway, to Dennison, Minnesota, just on the line between Rice and Goodhue counties, with their one year old son, Nils, in 1868. Shortly after Maren's death in 1891, Ole moved to Northfield with his family of 6 children: Nils, Randi, Sigrid, Ingvald, Dorothea and Ole Jr. In the early 1900s Ole married Anna Martin. They had a son, Rudolph, born in 1904. Ole Jr. has written of his father: "He was a poor farmer with 2 beautiful hobbies, books and violins. Whenever he had money with which to acquire those treasured possessions he would make a trip to Minneapolis. In addition to buying violins and books, father never failed to bring bananas home. This we considered a treat fit for the Gods." Ole continued "In his spare moments, father would work on his violin, affixing the strings and adjusting the bridge and tuning post. Then he would price and sell them, always keeping one for himself. Father played the violin very well. Often he would go into the parlor at night and there in the dark he would play Norwegian folk tunes. As a child I sat quietly. Some of the livelier tunes, such as the ‘Halling' would awaken bright emotions in me and I would then interpret the music by dancing. Perhaps I'd look up and see my father watching me and I'd run quickly to a corner." The elder Ole Flaten had received his education in a teacher's seminary in Norway. He taught parochial schools for 30 years in the Dennison and Northfield areas. He established the first bookstore at St. Olaf College and the first bookstore in Northfield. As the family grew up they scattered to homes elsewhere. Only 1 son, Nils, returned to make his home in Rice County. His story of working his way through college is a poignant one. He received his B.A. in Classical Studies from the University of Minnesota in 1893. He interrupted his studies for 2 years, working and teaching in Buxton, ND. He had retained his father's interest in the violin. As a violinist, he organized and directed a touring band in Buxton. He returned to work there following his graduation. In 1894 he met his future wife, Inez Ruth Olson, who was then teaching in nearby Hillsboro, ND. They were married in 1896. Nils writes, "Of our 3 boys, Olav and Arnold were born in Minneapolis, Olav October 18, 1897, and Arnold May 18, 1900. Sigurd was born in Northfield April 3, 1907." From 1896-1900, Nils taught at U.C. seminary and continued his graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, receiving his Ph. D. in Romance Languages, Latin and Arabic in 1900. In 1900 he was elected to head the Department of Latin at St. Olaf College at a salary of $1,000 a year. It was said that Nils was born with an "itchy foot." Thus, in addition to the urge to improve and use his foreign languages, he found traveling to be a tonic both mentally and physically. He spent the year 1909-1910 as a student in Spain, Italy and France. He returned in 1913, touring by bicycle. He financed this trip by writing daily for Decorahposten (at $3.00 a column). He was stationed in Italy in 1918-1919 as a secretary to the YMCA to teach English to Italian officers. In 1921 he began his trips to Europe as conductor of tourist groups, continuing this routine every summer for 11 consecutive summers. In 1925, Inez consented, for the first time, to accompany him on one of his tours. Inez took pride in organizing ladies aids in several Lutheran churches of southern Minnesota. She died in 1964. Nils translated and published a number of books and numerous articles during the year 1924-1934. He continued to teach at St. Olaf College until 1947. Their oldest son, Olav Nicolas, spent his adult life in the lumber business in Wyoming and Nebraska. He established a small community named Northfield near Gering, Nebraska. The youngest, John Sigurd, graduated from St. Olaf College in 1929. While working in Wyoming he contracted TB. Complications of his illness remained with him for the rest of his life. He returned to make his permanent home in Northfield. He died in 1974. Arnold Wangensten Flaten came to Northfield in the year of his birth, 1900. His years in the public schools and at St. Olaf College were marked by his interest and participation in athletics and in the visual arts. The latter was inspired by his mother who studied oil painting and by his father's descriptive letters and cards from European art centers. Arnold earned his way through St. Olaf "College, largely by making posters. He graduated in 1922 and entered Luther Theological Seminary. During those years in Minneapolis he took courses at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Following his graduation in 1925 he accepted a call to a mission congregation in Laurel, Montana. There his art was put to use in transforming a former laundry into a church. These were rich years for Arnold. In 1928 he returned to Minneapolis as assistant pastor to Dr. J. A. O. Stub at Central Lutheran Church. It was here that he met his future wife, Evelyn Solberg. At this time, Dr. L. W. Boe, President of St. Olaf College, asked Arnold to start a department of Art at the College. This involved a 2-year study period in Italy and France. Evelyn and Arnold were married in France. They returned to Northfield in 1932. Arnold immediately went to work designing and helping in the construction of the first Art building on the campus, called "The Art Barn." This was the first Art department in a college of the American Lutheran Church, and second department of Art in a private college in Minnesota. Former students from those early years were to go on to graduate schools and return to establish art departments in other Lutheran colleges. The St. Olaf work began as a one man department in 1932 where it was necessary for Arnold to teach many aspects of art, such as drawing, painting, sculpture and the history of art and architecture. Soon the program grew and Arnold welcomed additions to his staff. Being on the ground floor with a knowledge of art and architecture as well as the theology of our church, Arnold accepted an invitation to teach a course at Lutheran Seminary. In addition, he was invited to lecture and to meet with building committees throughout the Midwest. Thus, as the need became apparent, he as an Architectural Consultant founded, with Edward Sovik (a former student), what is now Sovik, Mathre, Sathrum, Quanbeck Architectural firm located in Northfield. As Arnold's philosophy demanded that all art teachers should "produce," he supplemented his teaching with his work in sculpture. In 1974 his work as sculpture was summarized in a book entitled "Arnold Flaten, Sculptor." His early interest in athletics continued. He was admitted to the St. Olaf Hall of Fame as a result of his years of active participation in football, track and tennis. Arnold died June 1, 1976. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, who lives in Northfield, and their children: Anne Flaten Pixley, Claremont, CA, exhibiting artist in USA and European galleries; Robert Arnold, Arlington, VA, Deputy Assistant, Secretary of State for Congressional Relations; Mary Evelyn, Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico, French teacher and stained glass craftsman; David Nils, LaVerne, CA, Director, Designer, Actor and Professor of Theatre.

At eleven o’clock a.m. today at the Synod Church, occurs the marriage of Miss Ingebor Iverson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Nels Iverson to Hans A. Grimsoe, Rev. J.H. Lunde officiating. The event will be witnessed by a large concourse of invited guests and a reception will be given at the home of the bride’s parents immediately after the ceremony, when a bounteous wedding dinner will be served. The bride has been a resident of this township since her childhood and is an accomplished young lady, who numbers her friends by her acquaintances, while the groom is a popular young man with excellent habits, who graduated from Luther Normal School in Sioux Falls last spring and is at present engaged in teaching on the second floor of the Qualley residence opposite the Merchants Hotel. The Cresent joins the many friends of this popular young couple in wishing them a happy and prosperous future.

    October 4, 1900
The Grimsoe/Iverson nuptials referred to in our last issue were largely attended and the happy young couple received many costly as well as useful presents, also quite a sum of money. The reception at the bride’s home was a very enjoyable affair and Mr. Grimsoe wishes to thank the Hills Ekko for their part in making the occasion one long to be remembered.

    July 30, 1903

  9. 45.  Anna IVERSON Descendancy chart to this point (19.Rangdi5, 7.Ole4, 3.Trond3, 2.Randi2, 1.Trond1) was born on 26 Jun 1872 in Martin Twp, Rock County, Minnesota; died after 1929.

    Notes:

The Howard/Messing family tree identifies Anne as the first white child born in Martin Twp, Rock County, Minnesota.

In the 1900 census she had had 2 children, both still living.

She and her three children were living with her parents in Martin Twp at the time of the 1910 census. She is shown as married for the 2nd time but there is no husband with her. She had only had the three children. Her occupation is shown as dressmaker.

She was Anna Anderson in September of 1903. She was Mrs. Anna Jensen at the time of her father’s death.

In the 1930 census she was single and was living with her daughter Dora and her family in Hills. She was employed as a servant for a private family.

G.B. Anderson left Monday morning for the Twin Cities to be absent for some time.
Mrs. G. B. Anderson is at present staying with her parents Mr. & Mrs. Nels Iverson, southeast of town.

    April 30, 1903
Anna Anderson whose maiden name was Iverson has been granted a decree of divorce from her husband, George B. Anderson. The parties were married at Sioux Falls Nov. 8, 1893 and lived together until Aug. 2, 1900. Two children were born to them. The plaintiff alleged in her complaint that the defendant had threatened to kill her, that he had not contributed toward her support or the support of the children and that the separation had been brought about by his conduct. Personal service of the complaint and summons were had on Anderson at Albert Lea on September 26. Anderson is said to be employed at that place as a bartender. The decree was granted by Judge Brown Saturday and gives the plaintiff custody of the children and puts the costs of the case on the defendant. E.H. Canfield, Esq. represented the plaintiff and the defendant was unrepresented.

    September 20, 1903
A deal was closed on Monday where Iver Iverson sold the City Restaurant to his sister Mrs. Anna Anderson who took possession the same day.
Mr. Iverson is undecided as to his plans for the future, but will continue to reside in Hills if he can secure a residence. Mrs. Anderson was formerly connected with the City Restaurant in partnership with her brother Ole Iverson, the business being conducted under the firm name of Anderson & Iverson, and the many patrons of this establishment will be pleased to learn that she is again in charge. Mrs. Anderson will give special attention to the baking of bread, cakes and all kinds of pastry, in which line she needs no recommend. She will also continue to handle the well known Hazelwood ice cream. Board furnished by the day or week at reasonable prices.
We bespeak for the City Restaurant under its new management a liberal and growing patronage.

A Large Crowd Helps Mrs. Anna Jensen Celebrate Birthday at Old Home. One of the largest gatherings that has taken place in or around Hills, for many years, occurred at the fine old country home of Mr. & Mrs. Nels Iverson last Sunday afternoon. The occasion for such a large crowd was the 41st birthday of their daughter, Mrs. Anna Jensen.
It was planned to give a surprise party on Mrs. Jensen, and in order to not cause any confusion the “surprisers” met at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ole Iverson and drove or marched in a body to the old Iverson home.
It is estimated that at least 300 friends partook in this event and it seemed that nearly every available space on the big lawn was occupied.
About five o’clock the crowd was treated to a number of selections by the Hills Cornet Band,…
Mrs. Jensen was born on the old homestead in a sod house on June 26, 1872, one week after they had moved into their new home….
Mrs. Jensen… bears the distinction of being the first white child born in Martin Township that is living today…
About seven o’clock the company dispersed feeling that they had spent a most enjoyable day.

In the 1930 census, she, as Anna Jensen, is single and is living with her daughter Dora and family in Hills.

A 1912 land ownership map of Lake George Twp, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, shows an “O. W. Ellingboe” owning a 160 acre parcel, the northwest corner of Section 33.

In a 1914 land ownership atlas of Martin Twp, Rock County, Minnesota, “O W Ellingboe” owned an 80 acre parcel adjoining, and complementing, the two 80 acre parcels owned by “W O Ellingboe.”

Single and now head of the farm in the 1920 census. Living with him are his mother and sisters Bertha and Ida. The farm above his on the census sheet is Hans Nerison’s.

In the 1930 census, he is probably the Ole W. Ellingboe living on the Hans Nerison farm in Hills Village, Rock County. He is a farm laborer. He is erroneously shown as 51 years old (actually he was 61).

In the 1940 census, he is Ole W Ellingboe, a 71 year-old single man living in Hills. He’s a church janitor. He earned $200 in 1939. Ole had an 8th grade education.

In the 1950 census, he is a resident at the Bethesda Home for the Aged in Lincoln County, South Dakota.

    Notes:

An Elizabet O. (Betsy O.) Ellingboe b. 27 Jan 1871 in Iowa, mother’s maiden name Boe, died in Los Angeles County, California, on 16 Oct 1961.

She is probably the Bessie Ellingboe, dressmaker, recorded in the 1900 Sioux Falls, South Dakota, city directory. She rooms at the Odd Fellow block.

She is probably the Miss Bessie Ellingbo recorded in the 1911 and 1912 Denver city directories. In the latter, she is a fitter for the Daniels & Fisher Stores and rooms at 30 20th Avenue.

The 1913 Los Angeles city directory has a “Mrs.” Bessie O Ellingbo, dressmaker, residing at 823½ West 3rd.

In the 1918 Los Angeles city directory, Bessie Ellingboe lives at 348 S Figueroa.

In the 1930 census, A Bessie Ellingboe, age 59 and single, lived in Los Angeles as a “lodger.” Her occupation is something like modist (?). This Bessie was born in Wisconsin, her parents in Norway.

In the 1940 census, she is Bessie O Ellingboe, age 69, a lodger at the Ingraham Hotel in Los Angeles.

She is still living at the Hotel Ingraham, 1046 Wilshire Boulevard, at the time of the 1950 census.

  52. 88.  Emma ELLINGBOE Descendancy chart to this point (26.Ambjor5, 9.Ove4, 4.Ola3, 2.Randi2, 1.Trond1) was born on 31 Jul 1873 in Iowa.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Confirmation: 14 Oct 1888, Minnesota

    Notes:

At least according to the records on Ancestry for the ELCA, her confirmation is recorded in the church books for both the Beaver Creek church in Beaver Creek, Minnesota, as well as the Brandon Lutheran Church in Brandon, South Dakota.

She does not live with her parents in the 1900 census. “Of Sioux City” at the time of her father’s death. Not mentioned in her mother’s obituary although she was the informant for her mother’s death certificate.

    Birth:
There are at least two church book entries for her confirmation. At least one says that she was born 31 Jul 1874.

  53. 89.  Julia Maren ELLINGBOE Descendancy chart to this point (26.Ambjor5, 9.Ove4, 4.Ola3, 2.Randi2, 1.Trond1) was born on 26 Oct 1875 in Minnesota; died on 29 Mar 1964 in Orange County, California.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Baptism: 3 Dec 1875, Minnesota
    • Confirmation: 18 Oct 1891, Hills, Rock County, Minnesota

    Notes:

Entered in the church book as Julia Maria.

In the 1898 Sioux Falls, South Dakota, city directory, she may be the Julia Ellingboe, stenographer, who rooms at 332 West 12th.

In the 1900 Sioux Falls directory, she is probably the Julia Ellingboe, stenographer, rooming at the Odd Fellow block.

In the 1905 Minnesota state census, she is age 28 and living with her parents and siblings in Martin Twp, Rock County.

Her father’s obit referred to her as Mrs. Sherman Coxe of Denver.

She was a 44 year-old widow living in Assembly District 63, Los Angeles County, with her son in the 1920 census. She has no occupation.

She was a 54 year-old widow living in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles County, California, with her son in the 1930 census. She has no occupation.

It is likely that Julia did not marry Sherman Richard Cox. In the 1910 census, Sherman R. Cox, 41, born in Illinois, was living in Denver with his wife of two years Bertha M., 31, born in Iowa. Living with the couple was his mother, Carrie M. Sherman. He appears to be a livestock merchant. In the 1920 census, Sherman R. Cox, 52, born in Illinois, was living in Los Angeles Assembly District 63 with his wife Bertha M., 41, born in Iowa, and their children, Jean C., 6, and William S., 5. Both children were born in Colorado. Sherman is a livestock grower. In the 1930 census, Sherman R. Cox, 61, born in Illinois, was living in Los Angeles Assembly District 58 with his wife, Bertha M., 50, born in Iowa, and their children Jean, 16, and William S., 15. Sherman had no occupation. So it would seem that, unless Sherman Richard divorced Bertha, married Julia, and then divorced Julia and remarried Bertha, Julia and Sherman Richard were not married and that Julia followed Sherman Richard to California and was dependent on him for support.

    Birth:
The 26th is the date shown in the church book. Other sources say October 27th.

Or Ida Frances, the name by which she was called in articles about her death.

She is probably the Ida Ellingbo, age 18, school teacher in Lake Johanna Twp, Pope County, Minnesota, in the state’s 1905 census.

In the 1915 Iowa state census, there is an Ida Ellingbo, a 25 year-old bookkeeper living at 3239 Jackson in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. This Sioux City Ida is shown as born in Minnesota, 25 years in the U.S., 3 years in Iowa. She earned $900 in 1914 and has had an 8th grade education. Both of her parents were born in Norway.

  64. 100.  Ole P FLATEN Descendancy chart to this point (30.Peder5, 10.Randi4, 4.Ola3, 2.Randi2, 1.Trond1) was born on 18 Dec 1863 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway.

    Notes:

From a history of Chippewa and Lac qui Parle Counties, written in 1916:

Ole P. Flatin, one of the well-known and highly respected residents of Chippewa county, Minnesota, was born in Valders, Norway, on December 18, 1863, being the son of Peder I. and Marit (Grythen) Flatin.

Peder I. and Marit Flatin were born at Valders, Norway, where they were educated and there grew to manhood and womanhood and married. It was there that Peder Flatin engaged in farming, having owned a farm, which in time went to the eldest son, who being first-born of the sons, came into possession of the tract of land, owned by his father. After having cultivated the place for a number of years, Peder Flatin decided to leave the home of his birth and young manhood and come to America. In 1870, he and his family set sail for the new world, and after having landed in this country, they came direct to Minnesota and located near Northfield, in Rice county, and here they remained until 1882, at which time they moved to Chippewa county, where he hoped to make a home for himself and family. Being a carpenter he did much work in that line. He now owned eighty acres in Rice county and the prospects for a home were at that time bright. After coming to Chippewa county, be lived but a short time, having died in 1883. The widow is now living at Granite Falls. They were the parents of the following children: Ingvald, Ole P., Ole, Marit, John, Randi, Marit, Will and Gertrude. Ingvald is now retired and lives at Granite Falls; Ole is a farmer and lives in Missouri; Marit died when but a small girl; John lives at Pine City, where he is a butter maker; Randi is the wife of Ole M. Arga, of Renville county; Marit lives with her mother and is a dressmaker; Will is a farmer and lives in Missouri and Gertrude is the wife of Winfred W. Hayes and lives at Farmington, Minnesota, where Mr. Hayes is engaged as a railroad engineer.

Ole P. Flatin was educated in the public schools of Rice county and there grew to manhood, on the home farm. In 1882 he came to Chippewa county and here engaged in farming with his brother, Ingvald, by renting an uncle’s farm for five years. After that time, Ole P. Flatin managed the farm in Granite Falls township, alone until 1890. He then bought one hundred and twenty acres in the township and in time added eighty acres to the tract. Here he made many improvements on the farm, including the remodeling of the granary, rebuilding the house and building a new barn. He did much in the way of development, making the farm one of the best in the township. It was here that he engaged in general farming and stock raising. In 1906 he purchased a home overlooking Granite Falls and retired from the farm. He later sold this property to the railroad company, and bought where he now lives, on the corner of Miller and Orange streets. For many years Mr. Flatin has been identified with the Republican party, and has always taken an active interest in local affairs. He served as supervisor of his township for many years and was filing that position at the time of his retirement from the farm. In 1908 he was elected a member of the board of county commissioners and is still a member of that body. He has always been faithful to the duties entrusted to him and continues to hold the honor and the respect of the people of his county. He and his wife are members of the First Lutheran church of Granite Falls, and have always taken an active interest in all church work, Mr. Flatin having served as trustee of the local society for a number of years.

On May 22, 1890, Ole P. Flatin was united in marriage to Maria Thorkelson, a native of Goodhue county, Minnesota, and the daughter of Andre Thorkelson, who came to the county in the early seventies. To this union two children were born, Hilda, who died at the age of sixteen, and Peder Melvin, now twenty-four years of age. Maria Flatin, the wife and mother died in 1893. After the death of his wife, Ole P. Flatin was united in marriage on June 2, 1896, to Mrs. Helen (Rude) Wollan, a native of Renville county, Minnesota, and the daughter of Knut Rude and wife, who were old settlers in the county, having located there in 1868.

Ole P. Flatin has devoted much of his time and ability to the development of the community in which he has lived and is recognized as one of the foremost men of the county in the way of meeting the growing needs of the district. With the other commissioners of the county, he had much to do with the establishment of the Riverside sanatorium, and when the same was organized, he was elected a member of the sanatorium committee, and by them elected secretary of the commission. His life has been an active one and he has accomplished much that has had to do with the development and the social welfare of the county.

After returning to the family farm, he earned a commercial pilot's license and became an exceptional aviator, conducting charter flights all over the United States and Canada while winning a number of flying competitions and using his planes for hunting trips in his spare time. Although farming was his vocation, he was equally passionate about his avocation - the art of flying.
