Hun var en meget dyktig bondekone og passet godt sammen med "Patriarken" Trond. De måtte få kongens tillatelse til å gifte seg fordi de var søsken- barn. Da hun døde 63 år gammel, giftet Trond seg, som da var 68 år med den 10 år yngre Anne K Bøe (1754-1829)fra Bøe 43/1 (Nerrebø). Hun hadde vært gift to ganger tidligere. Trond og Anne hadde ikke barn.

Trond og Kjersti hadde også datteren INGELEV (1770- ) Hun var forlovet med Helge T Lajord, som etter det som sies var en meget kjekk mann. Han bodde omtrent fast i Kattevold 44/ og hjalp til på gården. En dag skulle han kjøre posten for "svigerf aren", men kjørte gjennom isen ved Leine-osen og forsvant med post og hest. Ingelev ble boende i Kattevold resten av livet.

MARGRETE (1771-1851), var gift med Finnkjell A Leirol ((1737-1822) De var både på Syndrol, på Kvåle og i Hamre 60/. De hadde en sønn ANDRIS (1794-1869) Han drev Hamre 60/ og var gift med sin slektning Berit H Leine (1794-1874) de hadde ikke barn og ga derfor i felles testamentet gården til Trond E Kattevold som var fetteren til Andris og som var gift med niesen til Berit (Berte H Leine)

DORTE (1786- ) var gift med KNUT H NEFSTAD, de drev Bunde 97/3. Uten barn Han var oldebarn av presten Colding og altså nær slekt med Dorte.

Trond ville vel heller ikke gi fra seg gården så tidlig, derfor fikk Jon og Ragndi bare en plass unde r gården. De hadde det trangt hele livet, men klarte seg. Sønnen deres Trond, tok bestefaren til seg og oppdro han som sin egen sønn. Jon og Randi hadde også barna:VILHELM (1795- ) først på Krøsshaug og så til USA i 1852. JON Jonson (1798-1833) va r skulemeister i Vang.

Oppfostret av bestefaren Trond (far til Kattevøladn). Mange mente han ble en ny utgave av den gamle patriarken. Han var en flink bonde og Kattevold 44/ var toppgården i Vang på den tiden. Han ble ofte truet på livet fordi han alltid var ute etter all råskapen og fanteriet som var i Vang på den tiden. Han gjorde mye for skolene i bygda, bl.a skaffet han lærebøker. Han ville at ungene skulle lese ordentlige bøker, og ble sint hvis han så at de leste

(BK. "Gamalt frå Vang): " Han Trond flytta aat Bø og brukte gard'n der i 9 aar. Ein drivande garbrukar var han, og der flødde taa alle ting i Bø i dei aaro. Daa bestefar'n dø, kom dei te Kattevøl, og dei kom ikkje tomhendis. Ei heil dreft med hesta og fe hadde dei med se or Bø. Slik heimafyld hadde ingjen sett før her i bygd'n.

Endaa va det kje følketomt paa Kattevøl; mange ledige dagdrivarar med lite te bite, og lite te slite. Dei nebbast som smaafugla, ner ein lit'n jobb va te bøans. men han Trond kunna mynstre og stramma dei, so fekk dei nøkk fart i se. I baao støgo Sygarde va det ei babelsk førvirring hjaa frendo hans, som heldt paa fara utaaver bakkin, og Trond stræva lenge med o faa dei te seta føta unde se. Han fekk ikkje stort att før strævet sitt, vart helda misskjent mangei gøng; men sia kom dei daa te kjenne han før den velmeinte og reale mann, som han virkele va.

Da han giftet seg andre gang, kom rampen og skulle røve bruden. Men hun kom ikke ut. De låste derfor alle inne i huset der festen var. Da Trond giftet seg med Ingeborg flyttet han til Bø 25/ og drev den til stesønnen Amund ble så stor at han kunne overta gården i 1823, Trond fikk livaure på Bø 25/ av stesønnen. Trond døde antakelig av lungebetennelse. BK skriver: "Trond Jonson fø 5. januar 1855. Han for på Øyremarkna'n um hausten og lei so vondt paa ture at han fekk banin sin taa det. Maren Bøyesdøtte. Ekja ette hono dø um hauste 1873."

Ove måtte selge Kattevold 44/4 på auksjon i 1852. Dermed kom en ny slekt på gården. Det var Per Tørrisen Leine som kjøpte gården. Ove forsøkte å ta den tilbake på odel senere for å gi den til sønnen Trond, men saken ble hevet mot at han og sønne n Trond fikk bruke husmannsplassen Skraslebakken. Ove reiste med konen og sønnen Endre O Kattevold (1846- ) til USA i 1876. Sønnen Trond O Kattevold (1839- ) som brukte Skraslebakken reiste til USA i 1870. De hadde også Gjartrud O Kattevold (1845-) Øystein O Kattevold (1855). De hadde tre sønner som het Endre. De to eldste døde små, men dette viser hvor ivrige de var med å følge navnereglene i Vang.

Ove lånte en masse penger, minst 435 spd, bl.a. av brødrene Ivar og Torgeir T Eltun. De forlangte tvangsauksjon over gården og Andris F. Hamre fikk tilslaget den 1.4.1852 for 300 spd. Han solgte straks til Per Tørrisen Leine for det samme beløpet .

Ove reiste odelspåtale mot Per på vegne av sønnen Trond, men de inngikk forlig den 15.2.1856. Forliket gikk ut på at Ove trakk odelssaken mot at Trond fikk husmannsplassen Skraslebakken og at Ove og hans familie kunne bo hos Trond og overta plasse n dersom Trond døde eller reiste bort. Det siste var nok tatt med med tanke på Amerika feberen som raste over Valdres på den tiden. Det viste seg også å være riktig for Trond dro til USA i 1870, så faren overtok og drev plassen til han selv dro over i 1876.

Trond dro kanskje til Amerika for å slippe å ta ansvar for den sønnen han fikk med datteren til per tørrisen i 1869.

Det er nok han Bøye Skeie skriver om i "Gamalt frå Vang" side 60, som etter 30 år i Amerika skrev til slektninger i Vang: E skulde like um de sendte me ei flis taa dørahellun mino paa Helestrønd, ner so kunne felle, samma un flise ikkje var størr e ennn tobaksdaasen min". Det minner om ekte hjemlengsel.

Jim’s notes: Clarine "Skip" Andersen skriver om han og foreldrene i "Thune Family in America": I USA kalte han seg Thomas. Two years later on March 17, 1851, their younger brother,Thron [Thomas], along with parents, Vilhelm Jonson and Kjersti Jorgensdatter Thune [Krosshaug] also left Vang, immigrated to America, and settled in Winneshiek County. Thomas homesteaded 80 acres in Glenwood Township, the S half of the SW quarter of Section 19, on land neighboring John's. Jorgen was known to be in the area about the same time. Two months after John and Martha's wedding, Sarah Garden became the bride to Thomas, while Mary Hovy became Jorgen's bride. These brothers celebrated their weddings on the same day, August 21, 1855.

Anders Olsen Kattevold was her “responsible person” or principal sponsor at her baptism. That Andris (I1993 in Jim’s VS) was gaardbrukar of Kattevold 45/ Øvre at the time of Randi Erichdatter’s birth. Other baptismal sponsors listed for Randi were: Niels Nielsen Böe, Christopher Tostensen Kattevold, Margrethe Christopherdatter Kattevold, and Anne Johannesdatter Böe.

There was no other Randi Eriksdatter shown as born in Vang around 1838. Randi’s parents, Erich Christopherssen Qvale, age 36, and the maiden Kjersti Endresdatter Kattevold, age 26, later married in Vang on 7 Jun 1842. For this marriage his father was Christopher Tostenson and her father was Endre Thronsen.

Quite incorrectly, Jim’s VS shows this Randi marrying Andris Thomassen Høyne, b. 1830, and having four children with him between 1857 and 1862 in Vestre Slidre.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, Rangdi Eriksdatter, age 28, seamstress, and her daughter Berit Jakopsdatter, age 5, both born in Vang, were lodgers on the Anders Olsen farm on Søndrebøe østre 37/ in the Hoved Sogn subparish in the Vang parish.

Ernie was a prominent business owner of the Anoka Locker Plant for 30 years. If you had a "beef" you saw Ernie. Claude Soine, 94, a longtime Wildrose resident, lately of Minot, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Trinity Hospital in Minot.

His memorial service will be held Tuesday morning, Feb. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Wildrose. Pastoral Assistant Kathy Paulson will officiate and interment of the cremated remains will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Ray in the spring.

Claude Vernon Soine was born on March 6, 1914, to Alfred and Sneva "Lula" (Nygaard) Soine. He was raised and educated in Ray and graduated from Ray High School in 1934.

Claude married Adelle Larson of Ray on Feb. 19, 1940, in Seattle, Wash. They eventually made their home in Wildrose.

Following high school, he worked at Fort Peck Dam in Montana, Washington, Corinth and Wildrose. He was owner/operator of the Wildrose Bar for several years. He later became manager for the Farmers Union Oil Company until he retired at the age of 65. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1945.

He was a member of the Ray Lutheran Church until transferring his membership to Grace Lutheran Church of Wildrose in 1963.

Claude was active in the American Legion, serving at one time as commander and as post commander. He was active in the Masons in Wildrose and later in Ray. Claude was also a member of the Elks Lodge, a lifetime member of the Volunteer Fire Department of North Dakota, the Lions Club and the Williston Moose. He belonged to the Commercial Club in Wildrose, organized by the businesses in Wildrose. Claude also was involved in the design and maintenance of the Wildrose golf course.

Claude enjoyed golfing, dancing, playing cards, sports, hunting, fishing and reading.

Claude is survived by his sons, Terry (Rita) of Thief River Falls, Minn. and David (Susan) of Seabeck, Wash.; daughters, Judy (Terry) Halgrimson of Minot, Jane Soine (Joe Ewing) of Grand Junction, Colo., and Nancy (Jack) Kahl of Rapid City, S.D.; a special friend and companion, Ruby Melland of Williston; sisters, Muriel Meredith and Margaret Michaud, both of Washington; a sister-in-law, Donalda Tuttle, also of Washington; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Adelle; his parents; and his brothers and sisters, Art, Jess, Les Maurice, Jean and Martha.

Brad’s notes, regarding conversations he had with relatives in Norway, refers to Ole as “Ole Ellingboe in the Cities.” Ole was a frequent visitor to the Ole and Albert Ellingboe farms in Lakeville. These visits may have been accompanied by visits to Selma Nelson, a neighbor of the Ellingboes and a sister of “Ole the plumber”’s first wife.

He may be the 22 year-old Ole O Ellingboe who arrived in New York and passed through Ellis Island.

In the 1920 census, Ole, a widower, is living with the Henry Hanson family of 4428 44th Avenue S. in Minneapolis. He is shown as “nephew” along with his 13 year-old son Oscar who is also living with the Hansons. Ole was born in Norway and came to the U.S. in 1901. Ole is a plumber.

Ole, of 4428 44th Avenue in Minneapolis, was listed as the nearest relative of Harry Olson Ellingboe on Harry’s draft registration.

Seemingly related here is Bertha Ellingboe, b. ca 1896, in Norway, a tailoress, who lives with Conrad and Mary Hanson of 4420 43rd Avenue S. in Minneapolis. Conrad Hanson and Henry Hanson both work at a bag factory. (That Bertha is, apparently, #10692, the daughter of Anders Tollefson and Ingeborg Olsdatter.)

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he is a mechanic for MGL. He and Bertha live at 3209 20th Avenue S.

He is the Ole Ellingboe, age 69, arriving in New York on September 20, 1948, aboard the S.S. Stockholm which had departed from Gothenburg, Sweden, on September 11th. Ole’s address is shown as 3209 20th Avenue South in Minneapolis. His U.S. passport was #159040.

He died leaving a widow Bertha who was the informant for his death certificate. According to that death certificate, Ole was a plumber/steam fitter for the Minneapolis Gas Company. His death date was qualified by “found” so he may have died at his residence, 3209 20th Avenue South, and Bertha may not have been living with him. His cause of death was coronary disease.

In the 1930 Minneapolis city directory, he is Harry O Ellingboe, a helper at Paramount Pies Inc. He resides at 718 E 17th. That is, indeed, the address for Reuben R and Mabel Ericson. Reuben is a plumber for Bjorkman Bros.

He is included in the 1931 and 1932 St. Paul city directories as a helper for Paramount Pies Inc. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1932 Minneapolis city directory, he is a cook residing at 718 E 17th Street.

The 1933 St. Paul city directory lists him as a cook for Paramount Pies Inc. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1935 St. Paul city directory lists him as a fruit cook for Paramount Pies. He resides in Minneapolis.

In the 1937 Duluth city directory, he is a cleaner for N D Bort. He resides at 16 W 2nd.

In the 1940 census, he lived in Minneapolis as Harry Ellingboe, a 42 year-old single man born in Norway and having had two years of high school. He had lived in Duluth five years earlier. His occupation was bakers helper in a restaurant. He had earned $135 in 1939.

He registered for the draft on 14 Feb 1942 in Minneapolis. He worked for George Lundeen of Dassel, Minnesota.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was Harry O Ellingboe, a factory worker for Bemis. He resided at 104 Washington Avenue S.

He may have been married to #10778 although his death certificate says that he never married. (The Vang bygdebok says that he was married.)

The informant for his death certificate was Mrs. Alice Schmitz of 4946 Sherman in Minneapolis. Harry was not a veteran. He died of pulmonary edema and pneumonia. He worked at Bemus Brothers. His usual residence at the time of death was Cook Home of Rice Lake Road, Duluth, which wouldn’t seem to be the address of St. Mary’s Hospital. The SSDI says last residence was Minneapolis.

His obituary was published on p. 11A:1 of the September 14, 1977, edition of the Duluth News-Tribune:

Harry O. Ellingboe, 80, Cook Home, died Sunday in a Duluth hospital. He was born in Norway and came to Duluth in 1962 from Minneapolis. He was a retired laborer. Surviving is a niece, Alice Schmitz, Minneapolis.

Marjorie Thelma Thune, 85, of Bowman, North Dakota, died peacefully and passed into the presence of her Lord, surrounded by her children Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014 at Sunrise Village in Bowman.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday morning, January 11, at 11 AM at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton, ND. Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate with burial to follow at the Union Prairie Cemetery, rural Scranton.

Marjorie was born on August 2nd, 1928 to Walton and Kathleen (Moore) Thune of Ladner, South Dakota. She was the fourth daughter of eight girls. She grew up on the Thune Ranch, raising sheep, riding horses, and collecting rattlers from rattle snakes. Marjorie graduated from Bowman High School in 1946. Following graduation, she earned an Emergency Teacher’s Certificate at college in Dickinson. She taught one year at Whiting School, 1946-47, where a romance with John began to bloom.
In 1970-72, she enjoyed her work at the Sunset Nursing Home in Bowman, North Dakota.

Marjorie and John Torpen were married in Scranton, North Dakota, on June 8, 1947. They made their home on the Torpen Hillview Farm five miles south of Scranton where they raised grain and livestock. During this time God gave them six children. Marjorie was a wonderful mother, wife and partner to John for almost 63 years.

Being a talented seamstress, Marjorie sewed clothing for herself and her six children; including school clothes, prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and a wedding dress. She also took great pleasure in gardening, family genealogy, cooking and baking, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She was a 4-H leader and a member of Ladies Aide and Homemakers. Marjorie also had a love for reading and music; often whistling, humming, or singing a familiar tune.

Marjorie’s greatest joy was time spent with her six children and their families on the farm. Her hospitality included Sunday dinners with relatives and neighbors, which were often followed by games of Pinochle. She enjoyed afternoons with friends at the Scranton Senior Center having coffee and playing “May I.” While living at Western Horizons Assisted Living in Hettinger and Sunrise Village in Bowman she made many new friends and enjoyed putting puzzles together.

Marjorie’s inviting smiles and kind words made others feel welcome. Those who knew her loved her and were embraced by her unconditional love.

Family trips to the Cave Hills for church picnics and Thune and Torpen family gatherings were an important part of Marjorie’s life. During separate travels to Europe, England, and Norway, Marjorie enjoyed sightseeing, spending time with family, and researching family genealogy.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Gladys (Kahrs), Phyllis (Palczewski), and Peggy (Brown); and one infant brother, Benjamin. She is survived by her four sisters; Dorothy (Thunem), Clara (Flemmer), Betty Joy (Njos), and Judy (McCann); and her six children: Dianna (Richard) Kalina, Marsha (Robert) Nelson, Jacqueline (James) Basaraba, Randal (Deborah) Torpen, Sandra (James) Smith, and Jane (Neil) Lessman; 16 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

John K. Lerohl of Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully, at home with loved ones by his side, on October 31, 2014 at the age of 91. A native of Bovey, MN, John was a WWII enlistee when he was selected to attend West Point. He later earned a PhD in physics from Ohio State and spent his first career as a nuclear physicist for the Air Force and Defense Department. He retired from the military as a Colonel, earned his JD and had a second career as a lawyer specializing in nuclear regulation. John was an enthusiastic tennis player, swimmer, volleyball player, ballroom dancer and Buckeyes football fan. He is survived by his son, Jack Lerohl, his daughters, Karen Wilson and Randi Lerohl Manning, his companion of many years, Marvel Luykx, as well as his five grandchildren, Megan Keany, Teddy and Tommy Wilson, and Patrick and Lucy Manning. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Ann Lawrence Lerohl as well as his daughters, Jane Rasmussen and Kathryn Keany. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, by his wife's side, at a later date.

Christy was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church of rural Tioga. She attended District 4 Williams County country school and graduated from 8th grade on June 30, 1927. During the summers at the age of 8 years old, Christy was babysitting and doing housework for relatives and neighbors in the Tioga area. In 1929, the Ostrem family moved to a farm north of Manfred, ND. Christy stayed and worked in the Tioga and Ruso area. In 1930, she joined her family in Manfred. She had many stories of the days she helped in the cook car during harvest. She also enjoyed the church functions, gathering of friends and dancing at the Sons of Norway Hall.

It was at one of those dances she met Gordon Anderson. She said he looked like a movie star! Christy and Gordy were married in Minot, ND in 1935. They lived in Manfred where two children were born, Darlene and Rodney. In 1943, the family moved to Harvey where Gordy worked for the Soo Line Railroad as a brakeman and conductor. Two more children were born, Robert and Sandra. In 1966, Gordy suffered a stroke and was confined to a wheelchair. Christy was his caregiver until his death on May 31, 1992.

Christy was a loving and patient wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She taught by example. Most of her friends called her an "Angel". She was always there to help in a time of need. She enjoyed to the fullest the times spent with family and the many games of Shanghai.

Christy was a member of the Vang Lutheran Church of Manfred and First Lutheran Church of Harvey. Christy was faithful to her Lord in quiet and simple ways. Christy entered the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey in September 2009.

Christy will be deeply missed by her family, Darlene (Bill) Quenette of Moorhead, MN, Rod Anderson of Goodyear, AZ, Sandra (Bill) Krebs of Oshkosh, WI; brother, Arnt (Phyllis) Ostrem of Gresham, OR; sister-in-law, Lila Anderson, Lincoln, CA; many special nieces and nephews; grandchildren, David (Avis) Quenette, Suzanne (Sam) Wagner, Dr. Stephen (Nikki) Quenette, Mark Quenette, Jeffrey (Kandyce) Fraser, Andrew Fraser; five great-grandchildren several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Christy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Robert; son-in-law, Jonathan Fraser; sisters, Bertha Satterlee, Evey Fisher, Ingrid Reinholt; brothers, Ivan, Lars, Hank, Ted, and Ivar; nephews, Don Ostrem and Darrell Fisher; and many dear relatives and friends.

Morine G. Hollen, age 83, of Sunburg, passed away at his home on Monday morning, Oct. 19 following an extended illness.

Morine Glen Hollen was born on September 8, 1937, on the family farm near Sunburg, the son of Ruben and Laura (Gunderson) Hollen. He grew up in Sunburg, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and received his education in the Sunburg community.

At the age of 17, Morine enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1955 to 1958. On October 19, 1955, in Mainstockheim, Germany, Morine was united in marriage to Ingeborg Irene Schneider. They lived in Germany for one year before moving to Minneapolis where Morine was employed at Honeywell Corp.

In 1965 they moved to the family farm near Sunburg and continued the family farm operation. Morine was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church and served on the church council and cemetery board for many years. Morine enjoyed hunting, fishing, classic cars, traveling to Germany to visit relatives and the simple farm life.

He is survived by his two children, Heidi Hollen (and Dave Slavens) of Shoreview and Chris Hollen of Sunburg; one sister, Ethel (and Gene) Melgren of St. Louis Park; three brothers, Gordon Hollen of Glenwood, Kermit (and Franny) Hollen of Fridley and Lowell (and Mary) Hollen of Brooten, and his beloved canine companion, Max, besides other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ingeborg in 2018; one brother, Harold and three sisters, Audrey, Arlene and Rosella.

Donald Eugene Johnson, Born December 17, 1934 in Roseau, Minnesota, passed away on the afternoon of June 23, 2012. The son of Eugene and Inga Johnson, he started college but soon joined the Marine Corps and found himself 'at home.' Don served from 1952 until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge as a Sergeant in the Korean War as well as a Good Conduct medal, a National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and a United Nations Service Medal.

After Don returned home, he soon met JoAnn and on November 17, 1956, Don and JoAnn were married. Don worked for Pacific Bell from 1955-1959 as a communications technician. In 1957 Don and JoAnn started a family with the birth of Cheryl, followed by Gary two years later. Don began his 30+ year law enforcement career as a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy from 1959 through 1962. In 1962 Don achieved his ultimate goal of joining the California Highway Patrol and spent the next 27 years with the CHP working in East Los Angeles area as a Motor Officer (motorcycle) from 1962-1976, and as a Vehicle Theft Investigator from 1976-1989. Don retired from the CHP in 1989 and pursued a career as a Licensed Private Investigator.

Don very much enjoyed his golf game. In November 2002, Don scored a "Hole-In-One" on the sixth hole at the Fullerton Golf Course. Don found a 'second home' in 1981 as a member of the Whittier Elks Lodge#1258 and remained an active member up to his final days. Don and His wife JoAnn made many long-lasting friendships and companions with the Whittier Elks where Don served as Secretary and a Trustee for a time. Don was also a member of the American Legion & V.F.W.

Don "D.E." Johnson is survived by his wife JoAnn, his two children: Cheryl Edwards (Andy) and Gary Johnson (Lenore) and seven grandchildren: Josh (Ashley), Becky, Shannon and Kelly Edwards, Trevor, Spencer and Oliver Johnson. Don "D.E." Johnson is much loved by his family and friends and will be missed dearly.
