Ingri Thompson, a young wife and mother died at her home in Eureka. Funeral services were held and her remains were laid to rest in the Norwegian Christiania Lutheran Church cemetery. Ingri, her husband Knute and their daughter Betsy came to this country in 1854 from Valders, Norway. They first settled in Wisconsin and two years later, in 1856 they came to Eureka township where they pre-empted a homestead near the Twin churches. Knute, Ingri and Betsy were three of the original members of the Christiania Lutheran Church. The entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved husband and ten year old child.

He became a successful farmer and community leader. He married Ingebor Haugen in 1867 and stayed on the Bonde farm all of his life. He built a much-admired stone house in 1875 and kept a journal, written in Norwegian.

Of his 11 children, seven survived to adulthood.


The Tosten E. Bonde Farmhouse, built of locally quarried limestone in 1875, is one of the oldest structures of its kind in Wheeling Township, Rice County. The Bonde family emigrated to Minnesota in 1849 and homesteaded land in 1855. The private home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

In 1849, Einer and Berit Bonde emigrated from Vang, Valdres, Norway, with their two sons, Tosten and Halvor. Berit’s daughter, Kari, from a previous marriage, and her husband, Thomas Veblen, had immigrated to the United States two years earlier in 1847. The Veblens were the parents of famed sociologist and economist Thorstein Veblen. According to family history, the Bondes “dreamed of following Kari’s footsteps to the new world.”

The Bonde family lived in Port Washington, Wisconsin, before moving to Winneshiek County, Iowa, in the spring of 1854. The following year, on June 9, the family settled on 160 acres in section 11 of Wheeling Township in Minnesota Territory. In 1866, the Veblens moved from Mount Vernon, Wisconsin, to a farm in Wheeling Township, Minnesota. The rural community of primarily Norwegian settler-colonists was composed of respected farmers and civic leaders, including Halvor Quie and Osmund Osmundson, founder of Nerstrand.

From 1855 to 1875, the family resided in a log home. In 1865, Tosten, who was described as a “very able young man,” purchased the farm from his father. His brother Halvor, a Civil War veteran, had settled in Swift County, Minnesota. Two years later, Tosten married Ingebor Hougen on April 3, 1867. They had eleven children, born between 1868 and 1887. Tosten’s family lived with his parents until the stone house was completed in the summer of 1875. His father, Einer, passed away on August 27, 1875, and Berit died on March 12, 1877.

In a diary started in 1888, Tosten Bonde noted the improvements to the farm site: a barn was added in 1870, the stone farmhouse in 1875, a machinery shed in 1883, a granary in 1886, and a milkhouse in 1887. The two-and-a-half-story, L-shaped farmhouse was built on a small rise and constructed of locally quarried limestone from the Nerstrand and Faribault area. Situated near a well-traveled highway approximately one mile from Nerstrand, the gabled farmhouse became a focal landmark in rural Rice County after its completion in 1875.

The farmstead, which is still owned by Bonde family descendants in 2020, is in many respects a “living” document to rural agricultural heritage and practices by a single family dating back to Minnesota’s territorial days. Tosten’s diary offers glimpses into late-nineteenth-century farm life with entries like: “The year, 1887, was very dry and the chinch bug destroyed all the wheat and part of the oats. The hay crop was very short.” In his entry for April 12, 1891, he wrote: “Horses are sick from distemper.” The family history noted that Oscar, a son, remarked they cured the horses by “burning rubbers and had the horses inhale the fumes.”

The family history also tells of tragedy within the farmhouse’s stone walls. When an epidemic of black measles occurred in late March and early April of 1882, three sons died in one week: Edward, who was fourteen, Ingebrit, who was six, and Albert, who was barely a year old, fell victim to the disease. According to family lore, when Ingebor worked in her garden, “she would look to Valley Grove Cemetery and long for her little ones buried there on the distant hill.”

In 1890, Tosten was elected to the Minnesota State Legislature; he was reelected the following year. By early 1895, he developed stomach cancer, and he passed away at his home on October 14, 1897. The fifty-four-year-old was survived by his wife and seven children. One obituary noted he was “a good citizen and highly esteemed and respected in the community.”

In February 1981, Britta Bloomberg’s submission for the Minnesota Historical Properties Inventory Form stated, “The Bonde Farmhouse is significant both for its association with a prominent immigrant family and for its notable limestone construction and outstanding integrity.” In April 1982, the private home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Died at his home in the town of Wheeling on Thursday evening, last, Oct. 14, of cancer of the stomach, with which he had suffered for two and a half years. The funeral was held on Monday, with services conducted by Rev. N. A. Quammen, and the remains were buried in the cemetery connected with Valley Grove church. Mr. Bonde was born in Norway, Jan. 12th, 1843. In 1849 he came with his parents to America and first settled at Port Washington, Wis.; five years later removed to Winneshiek County, Iowa, and in 1855 came to Rice County and located on section no.11, in Wheeling, which has ever since been his home. April 3d, 1867, he married Miss Ingebor Haugen, who survives him, and to them were born eleven children, four of whom are dead, and seven are living; Thomas, Bernhard, Anna, Alfred, Oscar, Edward and Carl, all of whom are at home, except Thomas, who is in St. Paul. Mr. Bonde was a good citizen and highly esteemed and respected in the community in which he lived so long, and was honored by election to various offices in the town and as a representative in the legislature, in which he served during the session of 1891.

Mrs. Stena Olson was born in Norway, April 21st, 1848 and died in St Paul, December 4, 1917. The deceased was 71 years, 7 months and 13 days old.

When six years old she came with her parents to this country and settled in Wisconsin. Later they moved to Monona County where she has since made her home.

On April 24th 1870 she was married to John P Olson. Mr. Olson preceded his wife in death on March 5th 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Olson were the parents of eleven children two of which died in infancy. The living are; Mrs. Chas Olson, Sloan; James K Olson, Whiting; George E Olson, Sloan; Will H Olson, Watertown, S.D; G.R. Olson, Sloan; Leonard Olson, Sioux City; John S Olson, Sloan; Mrs. Walter Allison, Whiting and Mrs. Ed Haakinson, of St. Paul. Besides the children two girls were given a comfortable home and reared to young womanhood, Mrs. Ethel Stewart, of Villisca and a granddaughter, Pearl Olson, who has been an immediate member of the family since infancy.

Mrs. Olson is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alfred Strand, of Underwood, Minn. and Mrs. Johanna Bakke. The funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church at Albaton of which she was a member. The six sons acted as pallbearers carrying the remains to the final resting place. Interment was made in the Fairview Cemetery.

The Ole Forstrom (shown as Fostrom) family were farming in Eureka Township at the time (June 5th) of the 1880 census. The family consisted of Ole, 39, Betsey, 26, Thomas, 6, and Eda, 3. Also apparently living with them was Thomas Thompson, 21, shown as “cousin.”

By the 1900 census, Betsy is a widow and still living in Eureka Township not far from Peter Thompson. She is 46 (born Oct 1853 in Norway) and came to the U.S. in 1855. Living with her is her sons Olai B., 16 (born Feb 1884) and Arthur J., 9 (born Nov 1890). Arthur is still in school but Olai is shown as a farm laborer. Betsy is shown as having borne 7 children, 5 still living. Also living with her, although also shown as “head,” is her son Thomas, 25 (born June 1874), and Thomas’s wife Tina, 24 (born May 1876). Thomas and Tina have been married for 5 years and have two children (Tina has had a third one who is now dead): Norris O., 3 (born Dec 1896), and Clarence T., 1 (born April 1899).

She is listed in “The Valdris Book”, a history of the Valdris Samband published in 1920 (available on Google Books), as Mrs. Betsey Fostrom of Farmington. She was a member of the Samband between 1910 and 1916. In her entry she is erroneously listed as the daughter of Peter Thompson.

In the 1920 census, she is shown to have come to this country in 1855 and was naturalized as a citizen in 1857.

An obituary:

In the death of Mrs B. E. Forstrom, Dakota county pioneer for 82 years and highly respected woman of Lakeville, the community loses a beloved character, known and admired by everyone. To her friends she was Grandma Forstrom. News of her demise came rather suddenly Tuesday morning, September 27, 1938 at the home ofher son Arthur, where she has made her home. She was able to be out-of doors on Saturday for a walk. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Arthur Forstrom residence and 2:00 o'clock at the Lutheran Free Church in Eureka. Burial will be beside her husband in the adjoining cemetery. Three ministers will have charge of the service, Rev J. R. Langsjoen, the pastor; Rev B. L. Sundal, former pastor; and Rev A. H. Gjevre, pastor of St. John's at Lakeville. Mrs. Sundal will sing several favorite requests of the deceased. Pallbearers will be Milford Halling, Rudolph Ruh, Sherman Torbinson, Oscar Shirley, Sylvester Steen and Carlton Leine. Betsy Thompson was born in Valders, Norway, October 14th, 1853. At the age of one and a half, she imigrated to the United States with her parents, arriving at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, from where they moved to Nerstrand, Minnesota, after a short period in Wisconsin. In the early spring of 1857, the family pre-empted a homestead near the Twin churches in Eureka township, where she lived until her marriage to Ole Forstrom, at which time they purchased the farm where Eureka Center is now located. There a family of seven children were born, two of whom died in infancy and a daughter, Ida (Mrs Ed Ruh) preceded her mother in 1905. Mr Forstrom, the husband, is also deceased. Those surviving to mourn the loss of a loving mother are Thomas of Montana, Edward, Robert and Arthur of Lakeville; also nine grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Mrs Forstrom will not only be missed by her family but a host of friends in Lakeville, Eureka and the surrounding territory will feel the loss of a kind friend and helpful neighbor. Funeral services for Oscar Albert Bonde, former resident of Nerstrand, were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Nerstrand with the Rev. V. A. Jensen officiating. Mrs. Conrad Gaasedelen sang a vocal solo and one vocal selection was sung by the grandchildren. Victor Radtke, Wilhelm Vesledahl, Helmer Mohn, Harold Mosher, Ingebrit Engeseth and Harris Quie were pallbearers. Interment was in the Valley Grove cemetery. Oscar Albert Bonde passed away at the Kenyon Sunset Home on Sunday, Jan. 3, after an extended illness, at the age of 87 years.

The son of Tosten and Ingeborg Hougen Bonde, he was born at Nerstrand, on March 3, 1883. He attended the public school at Nerstrand. June 19, 1919 he was united in marriage to Clara Severson. They resided on the Bonde Homestead until his retirement in 1954, continuing to live in the Nerstrand community until 1965 when he became a resident of the Kenyon Sunset Home where he resided until his death. One granddaughter preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife Clara, three sons, Earl and Harold of Nerstrand, Robert of St. Louis Park; two daughters; Alice (Mrs. Herman Stenbakken) of Kenyon, and Helen (Mrs. Richard Lodmill) of Edina, also, twenty-two grandchildren.

Evelyn entered this life in Bruce, Wis. on May 16, 1916. Evelyn graduated from Austin High School in 1934. She married Loren E. Christopherson in 1939. He passed away in 1976. To this union three daughters were born. She worked in her husband's two grocery stores during the early years of her marriage and later as bartender/waitress at Lefty's Bar earning her gold union card for 44 years of membership. She was a longtime member of the VFW, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion auxiliaries.

"Evie" was loved and respected by her family and the many people she served over the years. Her two rules, "always be a lady" and "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything" are her legacy. She left us quietly and quickly, never wanting to be a bother. Her way. We miss her.

Evelyn is survived by her daughters: Lora Lee Bauer, Austin, Minn., Linda (Steve) Hoag, Austin, Minn., Lisa Ramirez, Farmington, Minn.; Seven grandchildren: Tara Anderson, Wade (Jody) Bauer, Lia, (Jason) Culbert, Christyn, (Brandon) McFarland, Chelsea Hoag (Brandon Smith), Rose and Riki Ramirez and nine great-grandchildren; brother: Alvin (Geraldine) Redwing, Austin, Minn.; sisters-in-law: Delores Redwing, Portland Ore., Vernyce Austin and Delphy Voorhees, Austin, Minn.; many nieces and nephews.

James Kenneth Olson was born, October 7, 1872 and died April 7, 1939, at the age of 66 years. He was the oldest son born to Mr. and Mrs. John P. Olson pioneer residents of Fairview Township and co-founder of the Albaton Lutheran Church.

Kenneth was confirmed in this church in the year 1889.

Mr. Olson married in October 1892 to Martha Maria Solon who preceded him in death in December 1903. To this union were born four children, James Newel of Whiting; Mrs. Martin Yackel of St Paul, Minn., Mrs. Harold Hall of Sioux City, Iowa and Mrs. Ted Napier of Fonda, Iowa.

On January 24, 1906 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Carrie E. Zurcher and five children were born to this union, Mrs. Malcolm Patrick, Denver, Colorado, Mrs. J.J. Weiner, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. Dudley Delashmutt, Onawa, Iowa, Elsie Vivian and James Kenneth, Jr., Elsie Vivian and James Kenneth Jr, preceding their father in death.

Also surviving are 28 grandchildren and step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two step-daughters, Mrs. Raymond Hughes of Huron, South Dakota and Mrs. Leo G. Keller, Sioux City, Iowa and John T. Zurcher, deceased. Three sisters, Mrs. Julia Olson, Sloan, Mrs. Stella Allison of California and Mrs. Ed Haakison of St. Paul, Minnesota and five brothers, George E. of Sloan, Will H. of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, Gus A. of Whiting, Len S of California and John S of Sloan, and many friends who mourn his loss. He will be remembered as a man who enjoyed life to its fullest extent.

Mr. Olson was a resident of Monona County his entire life, the greater part of which was spent on his farm six miles west of Whiting. Except for a few years when he and Frank Jennewein were partners in the oil business in Whiting. It is indeed a strange coincidence that these two pioneers should both be called by death so close together.

Mr. Olson also served his community in various capacities of public office.

Interment was made in Albaton Cemetery.

She is not listed with her father and step-mother in the 1900 census although Annie and Gustav are. Neither she nor her sister Annie were living with her father and step-mother in the 1905 state census.

Graveside services were held for little Ole Forstrom, the son of Betsy (Thompson) and Ole Forstrom, by Pastor N. E. Wikre. Ole died October 19, 1877. Ole was preceded in death by a brother Thomas Clarence. Ole's parents, Betsy and Ole were blessed with five other children, four sons and a daughter; Thomas, Edward, Robert, Artur and Ida, all of whom were living when their father died in 1897. Betsy passed away September 27, 1938 and Ida (Mrs O. E. Ruh) was the only other child to precede her in death. An obituary:

Ed Forstrom, well known in Farmington and Lakeville, died instantly of heart ailment, Tuesday evening, while throwing down silage at the James Milan farm, west of Lakeville. Funeral services were conducted at the home of his brother Art on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., by Rev J. P. Langsjoen pastor of the Christiania Free Church. Burial was in the Christiania cemetery. Mrs Guy Mohn furnished the music at the funeral. Pallbearers were Rudolph Ruh, Sherman Torbenson, Inger Thompson, Peter Christenson, Melford Halling and Louis O. Larson. Edward S.Forstrom was born January 24, 1882 in Eureka township on the home farm and died at Lakeville, December 5th, 1939, at 6:00 p.m., at the age of 57 years and 11 months. After growing to manhood in Eureka he moved to the iron range where he spent several years. Following this, he was united in marriage with Maude Chamberlin about 30 years ago and after two years of married life Mrs Forstrom died, leaving one infant daughter, who is now Mrs Beaulah Voss of Northfield. The deceased is also survived by three brothers, Art and Bob of Lakeville and Thomas of Montana. His father died when Ed was about 15 years old and his mother died at the home of Art Forstrom last year. Ed worked for the Star Telephone Company several years and also for Dr. J. A. Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Eureka, Dakota County, Minnesota, as Julius Arthur Forstrom. He gave his permanent address as Farmington and described himself as a self-employed farmer living in Eureka Twp. He stated that he had a wife and child and claimed exemption from the draft on grounds of his “physical disability and support of family.” Although his year of birth is shown as 1891 on the draft card, his age is shown as 26 which would be consistent with the 1890 birth year shown by other sources. Julius was described as of medium height and build with grey eyes and dark hair. No physical disabilities were noted.

In the 1920 census, an Arthur J. Forstrom is farming in Eureka Township, not far from John and Helga Thompson. Arthur is 29 and his wife Ida is 24. Both were born in Minnesota and both sets of parents were born in Norway. They have no children.

In the 1930 census (indexed as Fosatrom), Arthur and Luella live in the village of Lakeville where Arthur is a clerk in a grocery store and Luella is a butter wrapper in a creamery. They have been married for 17 years and have no children. Living with them are Arthur’s mother Betsy E., 76, his niece Beulah Forstrom, 17, and a 25 year-old lodger named Ole Ruh.

She was born January 27, 1923 in Wheeling Township, Minnesota the daughter of Oscar and Clara (Severson) Bonde. She grew up on the family farm by Nerstrand. Alice graduated from Faribault High School, and then graduated from Deaconess School of Nursing as an RN in 1947. Alice married Herman Stenbakken June 19, 1948, and the couple later divorced. She then worked as a RN at the Northfield Hospital, and then at the Kenyon Sunset Home, where she later became the director of nursing. She enjoyed playing cards, scrabble, and visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her daughters Carol Stenbakken, Diane Rasmussen, and Elaine Kraling all of Kenyon, six grandchildren Ann, Michael, and Jenny Kraling, Eddie, David, and Sarah Rasmussen. She is also survived by one sister Helen (Richard) Lodmill of Seattle, three brothers Earl (Charlotte) Bonde of Nerstrand, Robert (Carol) Bonde of Minneapolis, and Harold (Anne) Bonde of Nerstrand.

Earl Bonde, 86, of Nerstrand died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at his home due to complications from a rare disease called Amyloidosis.

Earl was born Feb. 22, 1925, the son of Oscar and Clara (Severson) Bonde. He was baptized on April 12, 1925, Easter Sunday, at home by the Rev. Rolf Rosenquist. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Houglum on May 22, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Medford. He grew up on the family farm in Nerstrand, which he farmed with his brother Harold, and later with son Bill and nephews Gary and John. Earl was involved in many community organizations, including Grace Lutheran Church, Lenten Community Men's Choir, Valley Grove Cemetery Association, Farm Bureau, Federal Land Bank and Nerstrand Elevator Board. He loved spending time with family and friends. His life was richly blessed with many loving stories and memories. Earl loved his Norwegian heritage; both he and Charlotte enjoyed traveling several times to their native country. He was a longtime bowler still trying to achieve the perfect game in his early 80s. Earl loved to read, play games with his grandchildren and Freecell on the computer.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; six children, Steve and (Linda) Bonde, Bill and (Barb) Bonde, Gerald and (Denise) Bonde, Pete and (Julie) Bonde, Karen Bonde (Carla Kennedy), and Kris Bonde; 11 grandchildren, Marcus, Kyle and Angie, Nate and Nicole, Blake, Evan and Merri, Jacob, Karl and Luke; two brothers, Robert and (Carol) Bonde, Harold and (Anne) Bonde; one sister, Helen and (Dick) Lodmill; and many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn entered this life in Bruce, Wis. on May 16, 1916. Evelyn graduated from Austin High School in 1934. She married Loren E. Christopherson in 1939. He passed away in 1976. To this union three daughters were born. She worked in her husband's two grocery stores during the early years of her marriage and later as bartender/waitress at Lefty's Bar earning her gold union card for 44 years of membership. She was a longtime member of the VFW, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion auxiliaries.

"Evie" was loved and respected by her family and the many people she served over the years. Her two rules, "always be a lady" and "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything" are her legacy. She left us quietly and quickly, never wanting to be a bother. Her way. We miss her.

Beulah B. Nelson, Crookston, MN, formerly of East Grand Forks and Grand Forks, died December 8, 2005 at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home with family members at her side.

Beulah Beatrice Ulvedal was born on April 23, 1913 in Grand Forks at the St. Anne's Hospital. She was the eldest daughter of Cora (Redwing) Ulvedal and A. J. Ulvedal. She began her education in Emerado, ND and graduated with a teaching certificate from Mayville Teaching College in 1930. She was a rural schoolteacher at an early age and taught students of all ages, some even older than she was.

She married LeRoy E. Nelson in 1936. They farmed near Inkster, N.D. and Thompson, N.D. They moved to Grand Forks in 1952 to continue raising their family.

Both Beulah and LeRoy were active in the Thompson PTA and were instrumental in starting the school lunch program. After the move, they were active in the Belmont PTA and its fundraising activities. Beulah played a part in the writing of the history of Belmont School. She was also active in the United Lutheran Ladies' Aid and was president of the organization in the late 1950's. She combined homemaking and career as her children got older. She worked at Willey's Jewelry, Norby's and later served as the store manager of the Fanny Farmer Candy shop until her retirement.

Beulah was known as a fantastic cook, which also included baking breads, doughnuts, and Swedish rice pudding. Many holidays, she decorated homemade Yule Kaka and had her children deliver it to friends and family. Education and hard work, ""If you want to teach kids to work, you must work beside them' were priorities for Beulah. Mother of her seven and many neighborhood kids, Beulah had an uncanny ability to understand children and their needs. She had a quiet personality but was firm in her conviction; she volunteered as needed and put in long hours in her many roles.

LeRoy E. Nelson died on December 10, 1986. She is survived by her sister, Vivian (Don) Bye, Bemidji, MN and Mesa, AZ. Viola Teslow, age 98, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday morning, November 8, 2014 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, MN.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Mark Kvale officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.

Esther Viola (Tollefson) Teslow was born March 6, 1916 at home in rural Calmar, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Alma ( Halvorson) Tollefson. She was baptized March 19, 1916 at Springfield Lutheran Church and confirmed June 7, 1931 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Viola attended rural country school and then graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1936, earning a Normal Teaching certificate by taking extra classes. She then did substitute teaching for a little while.

Viola was united in marriage to Francis Norman “Frank” Teslow on February 11, 1939 at the Springfield Lutheran Church parsonage. To this union, six children were born: Janet, Patricia, Susan, Gary, Debra and Dianne.

Frank and Viola farmed for many years and she was an active farm wife and homemaker, raising her family. She later worked for 18 years at Decorah Community Schools in food service at the high school. She was a member of Washington Prairie Lutheran Church where she was very active in circle. The church was very important to her.

Viola loved spending time with her whole family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she really enjoyed their visits; she also loved to cook for her family and all of their gatherings. She was a very good lefse maker, loved to play cards, reading, embroidery, making quilts, gardening, and enjoyed dancing with Frank.

Viola became a resident of Wellington Place Assisted Living in September 2011.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Frank on January 30, 2006; one daughter, Janet Funston on October 2, 2007; one brother, Walter Tollefson; four sisters, Lillian Johnson, Helen Tollefson, Pearl Tollefson and Edna Grace Austad; two sons-in-law, Fred Gates and Marvin Manness; two grandchildren, Sherri and Kevin Funston; and a great-grandson, Cody Nikkel.

Tilford E. Hellie Jr, age 71 of St. Croix Falls, WI passed away in his sleep at his home on Sunday, January 23, 2011. Tilford was born May 18, 1939 to Tilford and Clara Hellie of Morris, MN; where he was raised. After graduating from Morris High School in 1957 he attended college and earned his Bachelors degree in Education. After college, Tilford was an active member of the Army National Guard for several years. In 1967 Tilford married Gretchen Dokken of Benson, MN. Benson became their home and they had two sons, Christopher and Erik.

Tilford eventually lived and worked in Minneapolis for many years before moving to St Croix Falls, WI; where he and Gretchen enjoyed retirement. There’s nothing Tilford enjoyed more than visiting with friends and being active in different community groups. He also loved spending time with his sons and grandchildren and being a part of their lives. He was a proud father and grandfather.

Tilford was preceded in death by his parents, Tilford and Clara Hellie, his younger brother Keith, and his granddaughter Madeline. Survivors include Gretchen Dokken-Hellie, sons Christopher (Michelle) Hellie and Erik (Jennifer) Hellie, and grandchildren, Emily, Bennett, Marty and Stuart.
