    Notes:

The JCC record (copy in Manitowoc public library) says that Knud Sandness died on 8 April 1895 and was born on 22 June 1829.

Knud's brother Tosten had immigrated in 1849, via Wisconsin, to Decorah, Iowa. That Tosten was the father of Anne Sandness (#4574).

The Thompson (Sandness) family emigrated in 1852 via Quebec. On steamship Atlantic when it sank in Lake Erie. They survived the sinking of the steamship Atlantic in Lake Erie on their way to Wisconsin. In 1852, Knud Thompson (Sandness) (1829-1929) and Anne Torgeirsdatter Strande (1819-1889) arrived in Wisconsin with two children. Five more children were born to them in Wisconsin.

Lived in Two Rivers Twp in 1855. Worked for Two Rivers Tannery in 1856. He was farming in Gibson Twp by 1870.

Knud Thompson served in the Civil War. Enlisted as private in Co. H, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry during Civil War, 5/01/1865 to 17/05/65. Transferred to 3rd Regiment.

His surname was listed as Windingstad or Vindingstad in Church Book records. His birth and christening records are found in Slidre Kirkebok No. 2, p. 329, Births, and on microfilm reel of Ø. Slidre Kirkebok, p. 336, reel # 0125644. His vaccination record is found in Slidre Kirkebok No. 4, p. 186, Vaccinations, #81, 6 Dec. 1843. Slidre Kirkebok No. 1 (1849-1874), p. 171, Marriages. Emigration date of 1 April 1852 listed in Ø. Slidre Kirkebok No. 1, p. 241, #43), with wife Anne Torgersd. (#44), daughter Ingeborg (#45) and son Thomas (#46). Name on emigration record is Knud Thomassen Vindingstad. (Statsarkivet, Hamar)

Jim Ellingboe says: The Thompson (Sandness) family came from the adjoining {to Vang i Valdres} county of East Slidre. Last year I visited the ruins of the house on the farm Sannes (Sandness) on Windingstad where they lived in before leaving Norway.

Named Knut Sandness in burial record. Knud and Anne are buried in the Jambo Creek Cemetery. There is some confusion regarding the inscription on the gravestone of both Knud and Anne Thompson. "HUSTRUTIL " means "wife of". A separate entry for Anne based on Jambo Creek Church records is mistakenly read as 7 Dec. 1889, whereas it should be 1 Dec. 1889 and the age should be 71, not 78. This is the same as the information on the stone, i.e., not a separate person. Knud is listed in the Jambo Creek Church burial records as "Knud Sandness".

Those days Crandon had no electricity so his work in the dark room was done by kerosene lamps. The end of his business came when his lamp exploded in his hands burning him extensively. In the 1915 Rochester, Minnesota, city directory, he may be the Arthur G Ellingboe, telephone operator for the C G W R R, boarding at 13 N Central.

According to the records of the Mountain Branch (Johnson City, Tennessee) home for disabled soldiers, Arthur enlisted on June 30, 1915, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, and he served as a private in the 424th Railway Telegraph Battalion Signal Corps until January 15, 1919, when he was demobilized and discharged at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina. In many articles in the Menasha newspaper he is referred to as “Newt” or “Newton.”

Knudt and Elizabeth were killed when their car was hit by a North Western Railroad Streamliner train at a crossing in Menasha. He apparently didn’t see the approaching train and was hit broadside. The couple was on their way home after a visit to Oshkosh. The train hit the left rear corner of the car, a Buick coupe, throwing it into the air and into a telephone pole which broke off about 15 feet above the ground. Authorities believed that the car would have cleared the track if it had traveled just 4 feet more. The wig-wag signal at the crossing was reported to have been working properly according to witnesses to the crash.

Knudt was apparently single and living in Marshfield, Wisconsin, at the time of the 1900 census (June 12th). He is shown as 24, born in 1874 (?), living as a boarder in a hotel on 2nd Street apparently owned, or at least run, by a Robert Mc Mallum (sp?). Knudt’s occupation is shown as plumber.

From a website called “Norwegians in the Civil War”:

    ELLINGBOE, Knut

Spanish-American War: Corporal. Ellingboe's father came from Vang, Valders, Norway. Post war: He was living in Menasha, Wisconsin, in 1907. Sources: (ULVESTAD p262)

Knut’s enlistment in the 2nd regiment was noted in the April 28, 1898 edition of the Manitowoc Tribune. The same paper noted his decampment in the May 19, 1898, edition. A later article referred to his being in the Rankin Guard.

Knudt became sole owner of the Menasha Plumbing & Heating Co. in December of 1906 when he bought out his previous partner, a man named McIntyre. In 1909, he sold the Tinning Dept. of that business to Emil Lehman,

In 1916, the business became the Harper & Ellingboe Co., a plumbing business which also sold Oldsmobile, Chevrolet, and Monroe automobiles.

Knudt registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, in Neenah. He was a self-employed plumber and lived at 354 2nd in Menasha, Winnebago County. He was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall and of medium build with blue eyes and light brown hair.

In 1922, Knudt retired from Harper-Ellingboe (which then became Harper-Krieg Motor Car Co.) but retained ownership of the “livery” end of the business.

At the end of 1926 he became the head (Excellent High Priest) of the Island City chapter of the Arch Masons.

In the 1930 census, he and his family live in Menasha. Knudt is a plumber for a plumbing company. Knudt is shown as a veteran of the Spanish-American war.

He became city plumbing inspector in May of 1939, a position that paid $50 per month. Later, he became building inspector too.

In the 1940 census, he and his wife live at 502 Keyes Street in Menasha, the same house in which they had lived in 1935. He was a plumbing and building inspector for the city of Menasha. He earned $430 in 1939. He and Elizabeth had eighth-grade educations. They had a 61 year-old lodger living with them named Sigrid Dudley, a widow with five years of college. She was a health supervisor for the city schools. She made $2200 in 1939.

According to the obit, he and his wife had lived in Menasha for 40 years. He was a Menasha building inspector and chairman of the Menasha tire rationing board.

Oscar Ellingboe, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, building contractor in the county on business this week recalled the striking differences in ship building now and 80 years ago.

Mr. Ellingboe is a former Gibson resident. He and Mrs. Ellingboe have been visiting with relatives at Two Rivers and at Gibson. His father, Helge, and grandfather, Knud Thompson, cut tall trees from the forests in Two Creeks, sheared off the bark, and delivered them in Milwaukee for use as masts in sailing vessels. Notes:

Jim Ellingboe passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 with his family beside him after a two-year struggle with lymphoma.

Jim was born in 1937 in Wilmington, Delaware and attended DuPont High School. Despite disliking school, he was precocious and curious, creating his own experiments at home and learning to take things apart and put them together again. He met with some success, winning first prize at the State Science Fair in Delaware (and second prize nationally), and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Jim attended Oberlin College and studied abroad in Geneva, Switzerland, followed by earning a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Harvard Medical School. He worked as a biochemical researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden where he met his wife of 46 years, Karin. They married in Stockholm in 1967 and had their first child, a daughter Randi, the following year. The young family soon moved to the U. S., first living in the San Diego area, and then settling in Massachusetts where their children Christopher and Anna were born. Jim directed research laboratories first at Boston City Hospital and then for 21 years at the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Center at McLean Hospital. As an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard, he worked with graduate students, many of whom kept in contact with him over the years as their careers unfolded. Later in his career, Jim served as the scientific editor of the magazines BioTechniques and Peptide Research, where he continued to make use of his extensive network in the research community.

Jim was a man of strong beliefs. These were borne out in his many community involvements as well as in his devoted care and support of family, friends, and colleagues. As a young man, he became a convinced Friend (Quaker) and registered as a conscientious objector. He was an active member of Acton Friends Meeting and served on the permanent board of the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends. His perspective was defined by a life-long curiosity, and in the tradition of his Norwegian farmer forebears, he was an intrepid do-it-yourself man. He enjoyed the never ending task of home improvement, insisting on completing most work by himself, and sharing these values and skills with his children. As a testament to his deep appreciation of nature, Jim served on the Littleton Conservation Commission and supported environmental protection organizations. He maintained a quiet friendship with the lonely swan of Matawanakee Lake, and always had binoculars available to enjoy and share the wonders of nature. Jim was an avid photographer of the natural world, especially during travels to Scandinavia and canoeing and camping trips in Maine. In Jim’s free time he indulged his hobby of genealogical research. He reestablished connections with his distant relations in Norway, and regularly corresponded and created family reunions with these relatives. He developed a large database of historical information, served as an information resource for many Ellingboe descendants, and attended and presented at gatherings of Norwegian heritage associations in the U.S. Midwest.

Jim is remembered with love and gratitude by his wife, three children, sister, three grandchildren, extended family and a wide circle of friends. His peaceful, humble, and loving nature will be deeply missed.
