Besides Torsten and his (then-pregnant) wife and three sons, the household includes the 15 year-old Johannes Nielsen, farm laborer, the widow Marith Torstensdatter, b. 1793 in Øystre Slidre, Føderaadskone, the unmarried Knud Andersen, b. 1820, Føderaadsmand, Sigrid Olsdatter, b. 1827, Knud’s future wife, and Marith Knudsdatter, b. 1853, Knud A.’s daughter and (presumably) Torsten T.’s sister-in-law.

In the 1870 census (August 25), he and his family farmed in Freeman Twp, Freeborn County, Minnesota. (Their post office was Hartland, Iowa.) The household consisted of Tosten Wefflen, 35; Mary, 27; Knudt, 10; Tosten, 8; Mary, 6; and Betsy, 3. Betsy was born in Minnesota, everyone else had been borne in Norway. Knudt and Tosten had attended school within the past year.

In the 1880 census, he, as Torsten T. Weflen, and his family lived in Brookings County, Dakota Territory. The household consisted of Tosten T, 45, Mary, 39, Mary, 13, Betsy, 11, Ingebor, 8, Marie, 7, Andrew, 5, Mattie T, 1, Knut, 20, and Torsten, 19. The first three and last two were born in Norway, the rest in Minnesota. Ingebor and Marie were attending school.

His obit in the Wetaskiwin newspaper said that he had come to the U.S. in 1858 and lived there until 1896 when he moved to Alberta. He farmed in the Crooked Lake district until he retired in about 1904.

His obit said that he had two surviving daughters, Mrs. A. Dahms of Detroit and Mrs. Fred Nelson of Wetaskiwin.

One of the first settlers of the Crooked Lake District passed away yesterday, Wednesday, at the age of 78 years. Mr. Kjos came to Alberta in 1900, settling in the Crooked Lake district, where he has been a farmer ever since.

He leaves to mourn his loss seven sons, Edwin, Iver, Albert, Thorwald, Oscar, Elmer and Tilmar, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Lerum, Mrs. Ida Jevne, Mrs. Alma Reimer, Mrs. Clara Bigland.

The funeral of the late Eric E. Kjos, who died suddenly on the 6th of July, took place on Friday, and was attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. The late Mr. Kjos was a pioneer settler of the Wetaskiwin district, where he and his wife settled with their family of seven sons and four daughters in 1900.

The deceased was born in Norway in 1848, immigrated to the United States in 1867, but with true Viking love for new fields and open spaces, immigrated with his family to the great Northwest twenty-seven years ago where his many descendants have founded homes and prospered.

His son, Thorwalk, arrived from Vancouver in time to attend the funeral, as did also his youngest son and daughter, Mrs. A. F. Bigland and Tilmar, of Magnolia, Alberta. Rev. Shillons officiated at the residence and at the church, delivering an impressive service in both the English and Norwegian languages. The pall-bearers were T. R. Jevne, T. T. Jeven, Thos. B. Jevne, Andrew Jevne, Evan Jevne and Osten Berge, old-timers in the district and relatives of the deceased.

Andrew Jevne, a resident of the Vang district for many years, passed away at New Westminster, B.C., on Sunday, January 27, in his 79th year.

Mr. Jevne settled in the Vang district in 1899 and remained until 1945, when he moved his family to Vancouver.
He was predeceased by his wife Ida, in August, 1955.

He leaves to mourn his loss: three sons, Theodore of Vancouver, Ralph of Wetaskiwin, and Allan of Edmonton; one daughter, Mrs. Mervin Rogelstad of New Westminster; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson, and one brother, T.B. Jevne, of Wetaskiwin.

Funeral services for Andrew Rudy of Forest township will be held at the Bierman Mortuary in Northfield at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, June 16, and at 3:00 o'clock at the Trondjem church. Interment will be made in the cemetery there. Mr. Rudy passed away on Thursday, June 12, at the age of 67 years having been born in Norway on September 6, 1873. Coming to the United States while quite young, Mr. Rudy had lived in Webster and Forest townships for many years where he was engaged in farming. His wife had preceded him in death. Funeral services for Knute G. Rudy, well known Forest township farmer, who passed away late Friday, July 27, at the Northfield Hospital, were held Monday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church, with the Rev. B. A. Benson officiating. Sever and Gilbert Dalby, Oscar Nelson, Clarence Camp, Gus Lockrem and Peter Paulson were pallbearers. Interment was in Northfield Cemetery. Mrs. Olaf Skramstad sang "I Know of A Sleep in Jesus' Name," and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Professor Carl Abrahamson at the services. Relatives and a large number of friends attended the service. Mr. Rudy had been a patient sufferer with arthritis for 12 years. He was born in Valders, Norway, April 3, 1875, to Ingeborg and Gullick Rudy and came to the United States when he was two years old. He had lived in Forest township most of his life. He was married to Miss Boletta Dalby who survives him. One daughter, Mrs. Clement Fabre (Cora) of St. Paul, also survives. A nephew, Edwin Rudy, has lived with the family since babyhood. One sister, Mrs. Anna Clark of Washington state is living, while a sister, Mrs. Mary Camp, and two brothers, George and Andrew Rudy, have preceded him in death.

Jerome Marlo Childs was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Evelyn and James Childs in 1928. His father sold insurance and real estate and his mother was a nurse. Jerry grew up in Fairmont where he lived an ideal boyhood near Lake Sisseton and Sylvania Park. He was the oldest of three children. He graduated from high school with honors.

He started selling men’s clothing while in high school and continued doing it for eleven years. He worked his way through Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter and graduated with a BA in Business Administration in 1951. In college, his love of sports started to surface and he lettered in hockey for four years as one of the team’s principal players. He continued playing hockey while in the Marine Corps.

While employed during the summer months doing accounting in Fairmont, he met his future wife, Patricia Austinson. He then spent two years in the Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After receiving his discharge, he joined Shell Oil Company in Minneapolis. Pat and Jerry were married in 1956 and lived in Wayzata where Bradley Austin was born in 1959. In 1962, Jerry was transferred to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Jane Tracy was born. During his 37 years with Shell Oil Company, Jerry was a member of the prestigious Laurel Society for outstanding sales performance and contributions to Shell Oil Company. He served in many positions and fields within the company.

Jerry was a member of the Lutheran Church council.

In 1968, they were transferred to St. Louis where they joined Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (formerly St. Luke’s) and remained faithful members. Jerry was a devout Christian, raised in the Lutheran Church, and actively served many charitable organizations throughout his lifetime.

Jerry was an avid golfer and gifted tennis player. Jerry was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Club. He always enjoyed traveling with friends and family. After retiring, he became a self-avowed “snow bird”, wintering in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida, where he played tennis 6 days a week. He competed in the Senior Olympics, taking home both silver and bronze medals.

The Childs and Neumans are long-standing members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and long-time family friends. Bob & Bea and Jerry & Patty enjoyed many evenings out as couples and were great friends; their kids are great friends as well. The families shared many special memories at the Childs’ annual 4th of July pool parties and trips to Destin, Florida. Following the deaths of both of their spouses in 2000, they began attending church functions and soon became inseparable. They wed in 2001, uniting their families and establishing new traditions, while continuing to winter in Fort Meyers Beach, Florida.

Preceding Jerry in life was his beloved wife of 44 years, Patricia, his parents, James and Evelyn Childs, and his younger brother Gailand (survived by Elin and niece Diane Acree (Richard).

Jerry is survived by: his devoted wife Beatrice Joan Childs (Neuman), sister-in-law, Karen Cantlon (Steve), and his sister, Jeanyne (Childs) Hess (Clifford) and family. He is also survived by immediate family: son, Bradley Childs (Angelia) and grandchildren; Aaron, Allison, Abby Childs and great granddaughter, Violet Childs. Daughter, Jane Childs Bantz (Everett) and granddaughter, Emily Napoli. He was a loving step father (& grandfather) to Beatrice?s four children & families: son, Craig Neuman (Susan), grandchildren; Nicholas (Shelby), Blake, Brady, and Robert Neuman. Daughter, Kristi Neuman. Son, Steven Neuman (Debra) and grandchildren; Alec, Brendan and Grant Neuman. Daughter, Michelle Neuman Spielberg (Andrew), grandchildren; Connor and Hannah. He was a dear uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Beulah L. Caron, 90, a resident of Cedarview Care Center, died Oct. 23, 2009.

A Mass of Christian burial is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owatonna, with the Rev. Edward McGrath officiating. Friends may greet the family one hour before the time of services at the church on Tuesday. A parish rosary will be recited at 12:15 p.m. at the church on Tuesday. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna.

Beulah Lorraine Caron was born in Northfield, Minn., on Nov. 25, 1918, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Quinnell) Camp. Beulah grew up and attended school in the Northfield area. Beulah was united in marriage to Louis Caron on Sept. 27, 1938, in Northfield, and together they raised two sons, Gregory of Rochester and Craig of Overgaard, Ariz.

Beulah worked for Jostens Inc. for 25 years, the first 15 as a corporate accountant in Owatonna and the last 10 years in division management out of the Minneapolis office. She moved back to Owatonna in 1985. After retiring, she enjoyed working with Wednesday morning religion classes at St. Mary's school, delivering Meals On Wheels for St. Joseph's Church and Woman's Club while her health permitted. She was an avid bridge player and loved to sew, especially for her granddaughter.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law Mary Caron, and her sister Olive.

She is survived by sons, Gregory Caron of Rochester and Craig Caron of Overgaard, Ariz.; beloved granddaughter Melissa and great-grandchildren, Riley and Brodie; sister, Ronna Schiltz of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie Seyller (n?e Wernette), 100, of Aurora, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 16, 2020. She passed away in her daughter's home surrounded by her family. She was born on July 17, 1920, in Forest City, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Vernor and Clara (Austin) Wernette. Mrs. Seyller moved to Aurora in 1942 where she worked at Elgin Watch and later at Barber-Greene where she met her future husband Charles "Chuck" Seyller - whom she insisted looked exactly like Glenn Miller. They were married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Aurora on May 5, 1944. In the beginning of 1949, she had her one-and-only daughter Claire, and proceeded to be (what witnesses call) the best mother ever. Witnesses also say that she was the best Grandmother and Great Grandmother ever - although these witnesses may be biased.

She grew up in the Lutheran Church and never missed an opportunity to tell you about this or her Norwegian ancestors. With her favorite Bible verse being John 3:16 and a favorite hymn of "Trust and Obey" both of which she learned in childhood and comforted her through her entire life. A favorite of hers would be to regale the nearest ear with how she taught her grandchildren these things and/or how she would hum them at the dentist's, doctor's, or any other office.

At the end of the day, what can be said about someone who lived 100 years on this earth? There's simply too much to include in witty, short sentences. She loved her life, her family, and Jesus. She loved trees, and having lived through the upper range of the Dust Bowl, always worried about them and animals during hot or dry weather. She loved her dogs and cats and without being the stereotypical cat lady, insisted on their personhood. She would joke that every couple should see Niagara Falls twice - once on their honeymoon and again to see the falls.

That's how it was with her - never too serious, but never too absurd and almost always impractical. She was magic. To ask her ten years ago about living to 100 was met with an "Eesh! Can you imagine?" but then at 100 she was amazed at how it all went by so fast. She joked about what she would tell people her "secret" was but ultimately it boiled down to "her kids, being Norwegian, and the Lord".

Survivors include one daughter, Claire (Larry) Rogers of Aurora; two grandsons, Eric and Leif (Julie) Rogers; and two great-grandsons, Charles Rogers and Luke Rogers. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Abram (Abe) and Herbert (Herb); three sisters, Inez, Ruby, and Kathryn.

Charles Monroe Curtis, Sr., of Annandale, MN was 88 years of age when he peacefully passed away. He is preceded in death by his parents, Austin John and Stella (Ellertson) Curtis; brother, Elroy; sister, Carole; as well as his loving wife of 52 years, Bonnie Mae in October 2007; and daughter Kimberly Andrews in August 2003.

Charles joined the U.S. Navy August 1946; serving on the 1504 Navel Construction Battalion Saipan M.I. and the 104th Naval Construction Battalion in Coronado CA. He was honorably discharged with a World War II Victory Medal and a Good Conduct Medal in January of 1949. He married Bonnie Schmitz on July 2, 1955, they lived in Annandale with their four children. Charlie worked for AT&T Network Systems for over 32 years and the Communications Workers of America Union Local 7290. He had a love of cars, motorcycles & snowmobiles, watching the Vikings & Twins, spending time with his family and engaging in a good conversation.

Marjorie Thelma Thune, 85, of Bowman, North Dakota, died peacefully and passed into the presence of her Lord, surrounded by her children Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014 at Sunrise Village in Bowman.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday morning, January 11, at 11 AM at Peace Lutheran Church, Scranton, ND. Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate with burial to follow at the Union Prairie Cemetery, rural Scranton.

Marjorie was born on August 2nd, 1928 to Walton and Kathleen (Moore) Thune of Ladner, South Dakota. She was the fourth daughter of eight girls. She grew up on the Thune Ranch, raising sheep, riding horses, and collecting rattlers from rattle snakes. Marjorie graduated from Bowman High School in 1946. Following graduation, she earned an Emergency Teacher’s Certificate at college in Dickinson. She taught one year at Whiting School, 1946-47, where a romance with John began to bloom.
In 1970-72, she enjoyed her work at the Sunset Nursing Home in Bowman, North Dakota.

Marjorie and John Torpen were married in Scranton, North Dakota, on June 8, 1947. They made their home on the Torpen Hillview Farm five miles south of Scranton where they raised grain and livestock. During this time God gave them six children. Marjorie was a wonderful mother, wife and partner to John for almost 63 years.

Being a talented seamstress, Marjorie sewed clothing for herself and her six children; including school clothes, prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and a wedding dress. She also took great pleasure in gardening, family genealogy, cooking and baking, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She was a 4-H leader and a member of Ladies Aide and Homemakers. Marjorie also had a love for reading and music; often whistling, humming, or singing a familiar tune.

Marjorie’s greatest joy was time spent with her six children and their families on the farm. Her hospitality included Sunday dinners with relatives and neighbors, which were often followed by games of Pinochle. She enjoyed afternoons with friends at the Scranton Senior Center having coffee and playing “May I.” While living at Western Horizons Assisted Living in Hettinger and Sunrise Village in Bowman she made many new friends and enjoyed putting puzzles together.

Marjorie’s inviting smiles and kind words made others feel welcome. Those who knew her loved her and were embraced by her unconditional love.

Family trips to the Cave Hills for church picnics and Thune and Torpen family gatherings were an important part of Marjorie’s life. During separate travels to Europe, England, and Norway, Marjorie enjoyed sightseeing, spending time with family, and researching family genealogy.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Gladys (Kahrs), Phyllis (Palczewski), and Peggy (Brown); and one infant brother, Benjamin. She is survived by her four sisters; Dorothy (Thunem), Clara (Flemmer), Betty Joy (Njos), and Judy (McCann); and her six children: Dianna (Richard) Kalina, Marsha (Robert) Nelson, Jacqueline (James) Basaraba, Randal (Deborah) Torpen, Sandra (James) Smith, and Jane (Neil) Lessman; 16 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.
