Lockrem, who had left home January 15th, on which day he went to the cemetery to make arrangements for the burial of his child which had died the day before. As he had gone away from home on several former occasions without informing his family of his plans, no search was made for him. The verdict of the coroner’s jury was that he came to his death by freezing. He was the husband of Ingeborg Enger Lockrem.

Funeral services for Andrew Rudy of Forest township will be held at the Bierman Mortuary in Northfield at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, June 16, and at 3:00 o'clock at the Trondjem church. Interment will be made in the cemetery there. Mr. Rudy passed away on Thursday, June 12, at the age of 67 years having been born in Norway on September 6, 1873. Coming to the United States while quite young, Mr. Rudy had lived in Webster and Forest townships for many years where he was engaged in farming. His wife had preceded him in death. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Demann (Florence) of the Dundas community and a brother and two sisters, Knute Rudy of Northfield, route 3, and Mrs. Mary Camp of Northfield and Mrs. Anna Clark of Everett, Wash.

Funeral services for Knute G. Rudy, well known Forest township farmer, who passed away late Friday, July 27, at the Northfield Hospital, were held Monday afternoon at St. John's Lutheran church, with the Rev. B. A. Benson officiating. Sever and Gilbert Dalby, Oscar Nelson, Clarence Camp, Gus Lockrem and Peter Paulson were pallbearers. Interment was in Northfield Cemetery. Mrs. Olaf Skramstad sang "I Know of A Sleep in Jesus' Name," and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Professor Carl Abrahamson at the services. Relatives and a large number of friends attended the service. Mr. Rudy had been a patient sufferer with arthritis for 12 years. He was born in Valders, Norway, April 3, 1875, to Ingeborg and Gullick Rudy and came to the United States when he was two years old. He had lived in Forest township most of his life. He was married to Miss Boletta Dalby who survives him. One daughter, Mrs. Clement Fabre (Cora) of St. Paul, also survives. A nephew, Edwin Rudy, has lived with the family since babyhood. One sister, Mrs. Anna Clark of Washington state is living, while a sister, Mrs. Mary Camp, and two brothers, George and Andrew Rudy, have preceded him in death.

Andrew Edwin Lockrem was born November 24, 1885 on a farm near Little Chicago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Lockrem. At the age of 21 he was married to Lucy Barrigar and they made their home in the Hazelwood community, purchasing the farm here and moving to Little Prairie 24 years ago where Mr. Lockrem has since lived. He was in his usual health, passing away Monday evening, Jan. 23, following a heart attack. Surviving Mr. Lockrem are his, four daughters and one son: (Rose) Mrs. Leo Stanford and (Grace), Mrs. Jack Gernandt of the Dundas community, (Minnie) Mrs. Ben Tupper of Northfield and Alma and Earl at home. There are 10 grandchildren and four brothers, Peter Lockrem of McGrath, Gus Lockrem of Northfield; Nels and Ole Lockrem of Minneapolis with four sisters, Mrs. Ole Flannes of Minneapolis, Mrs. Harry Edwards and Mrs. Sever Estrem, both of Northfield, also survive, and Mrs. Margaret McSlan, Granite Falls. Two sisters have preceded him in death. They were Mrs. Arthur Dilley and Mrs. Andrew Rudy, both of Northfield. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Dundas Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. Marvin Johnson in charge. Mrs. E. E. Williams and Mrs. Johnson sang during the service. Pallbearers were J. E. Ennis, Errol Swartwoudt, I. E. Tupper, Roy Palon, Stephen Becker and Harry Wallace and interment was in the Groveland Cemetery.

Miss Anna G. Lockrem died at the home of her mother, Mrs. I. G. Lockrem, Saturday morning, Jan. 16. The funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 oclock at the Moravian church, Rev. Mark J. Andrews officiating. Mr. Eltun sang one of her favorite songs, “Not Lost, but Gone Before.” She was buried in the old Northfield cemetery. Until five years ago she lived in Northfield and made many friends who mourn her death. She graduated from the Northfield high school in 1905 and taught at several schools before taking up normal school work. After her graduation from the Mankato normal in 1909, she taught for two years at Waterville. While at Waterville her mother moved from Northfield and lived with her for about two years. Miss Lockrem was talented in music and was a teacher of vocal music. While in Northfield she was a member of the Moravian church and the Moravian Young Peoples society. She became ill two months ago and was brought to her home here; she was attacked by heart trouble which caused her death Saturday morning. She was 26 years and 9 months old. Out of town friends present at the service were Miss Edna Peck, Miss Gertrude Lowgy and Mrs. F. F. Williams, all teachers of Waterville, Miss Katharine Garner and Mrs. Harold Oliver, both of Red Wing, and Mrs. E. J. Sweeney of Faribault.

Mrs. Vetrhus was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Waltham Township, to Sam and Anna (Lockrem) Anderson. She was raised by Andrew and Mary (Lockrem) Boe. She married Olav Vetrhus on Dec. 28, 1950, in Ottawa.

She attended Shabonna Elementary School in Ottawa, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn., in 1941, and Bible school in Hillcrest.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mariann Vetrhus of Corona and Karen (Bill) Gillissie of Bradbury, Calif.; and two sons, Arne (Patty) and Steven, both of Salmon, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by a brother at birth; one sister, Mary Dittmer; and two brothers, Art and Howard Anderson.

Bennie was born on January 9, 1918, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, the son of Johannes and Marit (Olsen) Hegrenes. He attended country school outside of Thief River Falls. After his parents died, he worked on several farms until 1938. He then moved to Borup, Minnesota, to work for his brother, Joseph Hegrenes. He worked there until he married Laura Malakowski on December 9, 1941, at her parent's house near Lockhart, Minnesota. He then worked on the farm for his father-in-law, Frank Malakowski, until 1946. They purchased a house at Lockhart and Bennie began farming on his own. He farmed until 1970. After retirement from farming, he worked for Anderson Building Center in Ada. In 1973, Bennie had a house built in Ada. He continued with Anderson Building Center until retiring in 1983. He then worked part time for Ada Co-op, Vilmo Farms, and Tim Anderson. He was a very active member of Faith United Church in Ada, and served on the church board of trustees for a number of years. Bennie loved to bowl and has many trophies to show his winnings. He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, loved to work in the garden, and do yard work. He delivered Meals on Wheels for many years until he was too sick to continue.

Alvin Clinton Simonson was born Feb. 7, 1930 to Anton and Malla (Winden) Simonson on a farm west of Watford City, N.D. He was the youngest of seven children and grew up during the Great Depression.

Al graduated from Watford City High School in 1948. After that he attended Jamestown College for one year and then Minot State Teachers College part of the next year, until he was drafted and then enlisted in the Navy. He served honorably as an electrical technician in the Navy until 1955.

After the Navy, he was hired by RCA Service Company where he worked for 35 years until he retired at the age of 60.
Al married Mildred "Billie" Mork Nov. 11, 1955 at Central Lutheran Church in Portland, Ore., during a surprise snow storm. They had two daughters, Linda and Julie, and were happily married for 65 years.

In addition to God, his family was his top priority. He made sure that his wife, children and grandchildren always felt loved and well cared for.

Even though they lived in Portland, Al and Billie had a deep love for North Dakota and the farm life they grew up on. They would travel back yearly to visit, and once Al retired, they went back twice a year for planting and harvest.

Al was very talented in that he could build and repair just about anything-he loved the challenge. He spent a lot of time at the church working on countless projects with his friends Ken and Wally. Besides the church, people often called to have him repair their TV, dryer, stove, etc. and he was happy to do this free of charge, of course.

Al was a good and humble man who valued the simple things in life. His wife, daughters and granddaughters considered him the best husband, dad and grandpa there could ever be.

He is survived by his wife, Billie; daughters, Linda (Greg) Mirecki and Julie (John) Kowitz; and granddaughters, Kayla (Kyle) Kilpatrick, Lauren Mirecki, Kendall Kowitz, Margaret Kowitz and Madison Kowitz; and one great-grandson, Noah Kilpatrick, who was born just three days before Al's death.

Al's service will be held Jan. 5, 2021, at Zeller Chapel of the Roses and the graveside service will be at Cherry Cemetery in Arnegard, N.D.

Remembrances may be made to Central Lutheran Church.

Beulah L. Caron, 90, a resident of Cedarview Care Center, died Oct. 23, 2009.

A Mass of Christian burial is set for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owatonna, with the Rev. Edward McGrath officiating. Friends may greet the family one hour before the time of services at the church on Tuesday. A parish rosary will be recited at 12:15 p.m. at the church on Tuesday. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Owatonna.

Beulah Lorraine Caron was born in Northfield, Minn., on Nov. 25, 1918, the daughter of Clarence and Emma (Quinnell) Camp. Beulah grew up and attended school in the Northfield area. Beulah was united in marriage to Louis Caron on Sept. 27, 1938, in Northfield, and together they raised two sons, Gregory of Rochester and Craig of Overgaard, Ariz.

Beulah worked for Jostens Inc. for 25 years, the first 15 as a corporate accountant in Owatonna and the last 10 years in division management out of the Minneapolis office. She moved back to Owatonna in 1985. After retiring, she enjoyed working with Wednesday morning religion classes at St. Mary's school, delivering Meals On Wheels for St. Joseph's Church and Woman's Club while her health permitted. She was an avid bridge player and loved to sew, especially for her granddaughter.

Beulah was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law Mary Caron, and her sister Olive.

She is survived by sons, Gregory Caron of Rochester and Craig Caron of Overgaard, Ariz.; beloved granddaughter Melissa and great-grandchildren, Riley and Brodie; sister, Ronna Schiltz of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie Seyller (n?e Wernette), 100, of Aurora, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 16, 2020. She passed away in her daughter's home surrounded by her family. She was born on July 17, 1920, in Forest City, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Vernor and Clara (Austin) Wernette. Mrs. Seyller moved to Aurora in 1942 where she worked at Elgin Watch and later at Barber-Greene where she met her future husband Charles "Chuck" Seyller - whom she insisted looked exactly like Glenn Miller. They were married at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Aurora on May 5, 1944. In the beginning of 1949, she had her one-and-only daughter Claire, and proceeded to be (what witnesses call) the best mother ever. Witnesses also say that she was the best Grandmother and Great Grandmother ever - although these witnesses may be biased.

She grew up in the Lutheran Church and never missed an opportunity to tell you about this or her Norwegian ancestors. With her favorite Bible verse being John 3:16 and a favorite hymn of "Trust and Obey" both of which she learned in childhood and comforted her through her entire life. A favorite of hers would be to regale the nearest ear with how she taught her grandchildren these things and/or how she would hum them at the dentist's, doctor's, or any other office.

At the end of the day, what can be said about someone who lived 100 years on this earth? There's simply too much to include in witty, short sentences. She loved her life, her family, and Jesus. She loved trees, and having lived through the upper range of the Dust Bowl, always worried about them and animals during hot or dry weather. She loved her dogs and cats and without being the stereotypical cat lady, insisted on their personhood. She would joke that every couple should see Niagara Falls twice - once on their honeymoon and again to see the falls.

That's how it was with her - never too serious, but never too absurd and almost always impractical. She was magic. To ask her ten years ago about living to 100 was met with an "Eesh! Can you imagine?" but then at 100 she was amazed at how it all went by so fast. She joked about what she would tell people her "secret" was but ultimately it boiled down to "her kids, being Norwegian, and the Lord".

Survivors include one daughter, Claire (Larry) Rogers of Aurora; two grandsons, Eric and Leif (Julie) Rogers; and two great-grandsons, Charles Rogers and Luke Rogers. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Abram (Abe) and Herbert (Herb); three sisters, Inez, Ruby, and Kathryn.

Marjorie was born on August 2nd, 1928 to Walton and Kathleen (Moore) Thune of Ladner, South Dakota. She was the fourth daughter of eight girls. She grew up on the Thune Ranch, raising sheep, riding horses, and collecting rattlers from rattle snakes. Marjorie graduated from Bowman High School in 1946. Following graduation, she earned an Emergency Teacher’s Certificate at college in Dickinson. She taught one year at Whiting School, 1946-47, where a romance with John began to bloom.
In 1970-72, she enjoyed her work at the Sunset Nursing Home in Bowman, North Dakota.

Marjorie and John Torpen were married in Scranton, North Dakota, on June 8, 1947. They made their home on the Torpen Hillview Farm five miles south of Scranton where they raised grain and livestock. During this time God gave them six children. Marjorie was a wonderful mother, wife and partner to John for almost 63 years.

Being a talented seamstress, Marjorie sewed clothing for herself and her six children; including school clothes, prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and a wedding dress. She also took great pleasure in gardening, family genealogy, cooking and baking, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She was a 4-H leader and a member of Ladies Aide and Homemakers. Marjorie also had a love for reading and music; often whistling, humming, or singing a familiar tune.

Marjorie’s greatest joy was time spent with her six children and their families on the farm. Her hospitality included Sunday dinners with relatives and neighbors, which were often followed by games of Pinochle. She enjoyed afternoons with friends at the Scranton Senior Center having coffee and playing “May I.” While living at Western Horizons Assisted Living in Hettinger and Sunrise Village in Bowman she made many new friends and enjoyed putting puzzles together.

Marjorie’s inviting smiles and kind words made others feel welcome. Those who knew her loved her and were embraced by her unconditional love.

Family trips to the Cave Hills for church picnics and Thune and Torpen family gatherings were an important part of Marjorie’s life. During separate travels to Europe, England, and Norway, Marjorie enjoyed sightseeing, spending time with family, and researching family genealogy.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Gladys (Kahrs), Phyllis (Palczewski), and Peggy (Brown); and one infant brother, Benjamin. She is survived by her four sisters; Dorothy (Thunem), Clara (Flemmer), Betty Joy (Njos), and Judy (McCann); and her six children: Dianna (Richard) Kalina, Marsha (Robert) Nelson, Jacqueline (James) Basaraba, Randal (Deborah) Torpen, Sandra (James) Smith, and Jane (Neil) Lessman; 16 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

The interment of Donna Mae Gernandt, age 15, of Morristown was in the Groveland cemetery Friday after noon July 30.
Donna, who was the granddaughter of Mrs. Lucy Lockrem of Dundas, was killed in an auto accident Tuesday morning as was her companion who was driving the car, Phyllis Weatherhead, also age 15, when the car struck loose gravel and overturned.

Donna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gernandt, was born in Bridgewater township, June 17, 1939. The family lived in this vicinity for several years. Three years ago they moved to Morristown and Donna had completed her freshman year in the Morristown high school this year. Besides her parents, she leaves one brother, Francis, age 14; three sisters; Jo Ann, 12; Patty, 10, and Diane, 8.

Private services were held in the Gernandt home at noon Friday, and a two o'clock service was held in the Bethlehem Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. Victor Marxhausen. Pallbearers were her four uncles; George and Leo Gernandt of Minneapolis; Louis Gernandt of Eau Claire, Wis., and Frank Gernandt of Lonsdale.

The accident occurred on a county road three miles north of Morristown. The car flipped end over end and landed upright. Phyllis Weatherhead was thrown from the car and died at the scene. Donna died at a Faribault hospital. She had been pinned under the wreckage. Patricia Weatherhead, age 10, was also thrown from the car but was injured and managed to get to a nearby farm for aid.

Francis John, the son of Jack and Grace (Lockrem) Gernandt was born December 5, 1940 in Bridgewater. Fran was confirmed at First English Lutheran Church and graduated from Faribault High School in 1958. After graduation, Fran proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1958 – 1962. On May 25, 1963, he married Judy Johnson at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Northfield. While working for the University of Minnesota, Fran continued his education at the Southern Police Institute and the FBI Academy in Virginia. Fran continued working with the University of Minnesota as a police officer and after 32 years, Fran retired in 1996. Most of all, Fran loved his family; he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time at his home on French Lake and golfing while spending his winters in Florida. Fran was an avid sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Survivors include his two daughters, Julie (and Sam) Dalton of Richfield and Shari (and Pat) Leubner of Apple Valley; four grandchildren, Dan (and Jess) Dalton, Jenny Dalton, Michael (and Stephanie) Leubner and Brianna (and Tony) Lempelious; great-grandchildren, Jack, Audrina, Joey, Brooklyn and Aubrey; brother, Robin (and Kim) Gernandt; sisters, Jo Ann (and Bob) Mayer, Patty (and John) Keahey and Dianne (and Dave) Velzke; special friend, Gail Kielmeyer; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Ottawa with Arne Vetrhus, her son, and the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mrs. Vetrhus was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Waltham Township, to Sam and Anna (Lockrem) Anderson. She was raised by Andrew and Mary (Lockrem) Boe. She married Olav Vetrhus on Dec. 28, 1950, in Ottawa.

She attended Shabonna Elementary School in Ottawa, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn., in 1941, and Bible school in Hillcrest.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mariann Vetrhus of Corona and Karen (Bill) Gillissie of Bradbury, Calif.; and two sons, Arne (Patty) and Steven, both of Salmon, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by a brother at birth; one sister, Mary Dittmer; and two brothers, Art and Howard Anderson.

Pallbearers will be John Boe, William Gillissie, Mark Hanson, Tony Ledford, Wesley Osthus and Steven Vetrhus.

Evelyn married Olav VETRHUS on 28 Dec 1950 in Illinois. Olav was born on 28 Nov 1923 in Fogn, Rogaland, Norway; died on 28 Aug 2016 in California. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Orville Finne was the most loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He always put other people’s needs before his own and would do anything he could for others, even strangers. He passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, September 16th at the age of 78 after a 2 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Orville was born to George and Norma (Esther) Finne on July 8th, 1943, in Owatonna, MN. After graduating from West Concord High School, he enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1961-1965. He was stationed at Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan and then at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. He returned to West Concord and worked at the State Hospital in Faribault for a few years and then sold life insurance for many years. He married Katherine Langerud in 1967 and they raised four children together. They were later divorced, but remained friends. Orville later drove taxi cab and limousine for Yellow Cab where he met his special friend, Margie Creech. They were together for 13 years before she passed away.

Orville loved his children and siblings dearly and was never afraid to say, “I love you very much” to them. His 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild were such a joy to him. He loved to play with them, tease them, take them fishing, and take them to the “Gucci warehouse”. Orville was an avid gardener, fisherman and collector/treasure hunter. If he was not at home, he was either gardening, fishing or finding a good deal somewhere. He was always willing to share his vegetables and help his neighbors, friends, and family. He knew a lot of random things and was always willing to share his knowledge, whether you wanted it or not. Orville’s kind heart, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his children, David, of Lake City, MN; Traci (Scott) Hammer, of Elgin, MN; Mitchell (Sara), of Eden Prairie, MN; and Jason (Lissa), of Mendota Heights, MN; his grandchildren, Lindsey (Zac) Webb, Hannah (Andy) Erickson, Nelson Finne, Isaac Hammer, Anya Hammer, Eleanor Finne, Johan, Greta, Kaia, and Gunnar Finne; great-grandchild Laurana Webb; daughter-in-law Nicole Finne, of Elgin, MN; siblings Anna Mae (Charles) Victor, of Marysville, OH; LuVerne (Paula), of West Concord, MN; Russell (Audrey), of West Concord, MN; and Ginger (Don) Tune, of New Richland, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of life will be held at the West Concord Historical Society on Sunday, September 26th from 1-4 pm with a remembrance at 3 pm. A private family burial will take place at Concord Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to SEMCAC Senior Nutrition to support their wonderful Meals on Wheels program. The family would also like to send a special thank you to Erin Gilbertson for the wonderful care she provided to Dad for the last 2 1/2 years and also to all of the St. Croix Hospice aides and nurses who helped care for Dad.
