Two years later on March 17, 1851, their younger brother,Thron [Thomas], along with parents, Vilhelm Jonson and Kjersti Jorgensdatter Thune [Krosshaug] also left Vang, immigrated to America, and settled in Winneshiek County. Thomas homesteaded 80 acres in Glenwood Township, the S half of the SW quarter of Section 19, on land neighboring John's. Jorgen was known to be in the area about the same time. Two months after John and Martha's wedding, Sarah Garden became the bride to Thomas, while Mary Hovy became Jorgen's bride. These brothers celebrated their weddings on the same day, August 21, 1855.

An Ancestry family tree has his parents as Erich Erichsen Jevnehagen and Mareth Jorgensdatter. That seems consistent with the mostly-illegible churchbook record. His baptismal sponsors included lots of Qviens and a (somebody) Tostensen or Tostensdatter Kjös.

Jim has him as Andris Eirikson Hagen, b. 9 Dec 1831 on Hagen 88/3-9-16 Av Jevne, Ryfoss i Vang i Valdres, parents Erik Eirikson Kjøs and Marit Jørnsdatter Lokreim.

The bygdebok has him as Andris, third son of Eirik Eiriksson (Nedre) Kjøs (1797-1889) and Marit Jørgensdatter Lokreim (1805-1874). The entry says “fekk dotter Marit (1856-) med Anne Torsteinsdotter Kjøseiga. Til Amerika (sjå innerstar).”

The out-migration record in the church book has the following leaving April 10, 1861, for Amerika: Anders Erichsen Jevne, age 30, his wife Marith Jørgensdtr, 35, and their two daughters Mareth, 4½, and Anne, 2. Listed next in the record is Tosten Tostensen Kjøsiet, age 37. (The scribe must have gotten confused when entering the name of Anders’s wife.)

In the 1880 census, he is Andrew Hagan, a farmer in Holden Twp, Goodhue County. Andrew E is 50, his wife Anna T is 55. They have three daughters living with them: Mary A, 24, born in Norway, Anna A, 21, born in Norway, and Gertie, 19, born in Minnesota.

In the 1900 census, he is A E Hagen, a farmer in Holden Twp, Goodhue County. He owns his farm, free of mortgage. He is listed as age 69, born Feb 1831. His wife is Annie T, age 74, born Aug 1826. She has had 7 children, 5 still living. The couple had been married for 45 years. They came to the U.S. in 1861.

In the 1910 census, he is Anders E Hagen, 79, living in Holden Twp, Goodhue County, with his wife Anne, 84. The couple had been married 60 years. Anne had had 7 children, 4 still living. They seem to be living in a separate house on the Ole Neseth farm.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Vang Lutheran Church for Ole O. Hagen, 78 year old resident of Dennison. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Burial was in the Vang cemetery. Mr. Hagen, who had been in poor health for the past two years, was stricken with a heart attack shortly before noon Saturday, July 3. He made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Kasa. Ole O. Hagen, son of Ole and Marit Hagen, was born in Warsaw Township, (Goodhue County) July 12, 1876 and had spent his entire life in this community. He farmed in the Sogn area for many years and also operated a treshing machines when custom threshing was in order. He moved to Dennison 32 years ago and engaged in trucking and built the garage which now is used as the Hagen Garage. He was married August 7, 1903, at Red Wing to Tina Flom who preceded him in death several years ago. Surviving are two sons and one daughter: Delmar Hagen of Rochester; Oscar of Dennison; Mrs. Maurice (Mary Ann) Kasas of Dennison, two brothers, George and Christ of Northfield. Three brothers are dead, Erick, Martin and Edwin. One sister, Malia, died when eight years old. Three grandchildren are living and one died several years ago. Pallbearers were: Oscar Hellerud, Ole Prestegaard, Philip G. Hauge, Iver E. Ellingboe, Atle Gjerlow and Edwin K. Haugen. Mrs. Blikstad sang "Den Store Hvide Flok" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. Cyrus Midje at the organ.

Funeral services were conducted at the Vang Lutheran Church, Tuesday, July 21, at 2 p.m. for Chris O. Hagen, 78, by the Rev. B. J. Blikstad, pastor of the parish. Mrs. Blikstad sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Forbil Hos Mig" accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midje, the church organist. The pallbearers were James Haugen, Glenn Hagen, George Hagen, Delmar Hagen, Harold Hagen and Maurice Hagen. He was laid to rest in the Vang Cemetery. Chris O. Hagen, son of Ole E. Hagen and Mary Bakken Hagen, was born March 10, 1886, near Sogn in Warsaw Township, Goodhue County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Urland Lutheran Church. In 1911, he was married to Anna Haugen, who survives him. One daughter, Florence, died in childhood. Hagen spent most of his life in or near Dennison until they moved to Northfield in 1947. He was employed at Carleton College until his retirement. In 1962 they moved to St. Paul. He died at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul Saturday evening, July 18, at the age of 78 years. Besides his widow, Anna, he is survived by one brother, George Hagen of Northfield, five sisters and seven nephews.

Oscar Hagen, 91, of Northfield and formerly of Sogn and Dennison, died Monday, Sept. 25, 1995, at Three Links Care Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1904, to Ole O. and Tina (Flom) Hagen on his familys farm near Sogn in rural Goodhue County. As he grew up, he helped with the farm chores and later attended the country school near their farm. Following school he began to work full time with his father, helping with the farm and dairy chores and driving the milk route, picking up the canned milk from farms and delivering it to the condensary for processing. They also did general truck hauling, picking up and delivering freight and other large items. In 1922, the Hagen family moved into Dennison to operate the trucking and milk route full time. He and his father often played with an old-time band, Hagen on the guitar and his father on the violin. Hagen later owned and operated the Hagen Garage in Dennison with his brother Delmer. The garage serviced autos and other gas-engine machines. Hagen had to stop working at the garage in the late 1960s due to his loss of sight. He continued to live in Dennison until moving to Northfield in 1972. Survivors include his brother, Delmer (and Alma) Hagen of Zumbrota; nieces Teresa Bellis of Grand Forks, N.D., and Karen Youkin of Minneapolis; and nephew Adrian Hagen of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his sister, Maryann Kasa. Services were held Thursday, Sept. 28, at Bierman Funeral Home, the Rev. Gerald Gengenbach of the Dennison and Vang Lutheran Churches officiating. Pallbearers were Adrian and David Hagen, Albert Remme and Helge Kasa. Interment is at Vang Cemetery in rural Dennison.

On May 8, 1949, he married Jean Stechman in Zumbrota. They made their first home in Northfield and then farmed in High Prairie for 12 years, later establishing an Arabian horse farm. Along with farming, he worked for Union 76 delivering fuel. He built and operated the Caravan Motel in Cannon Falls prior to retiring and moving to Northfield in 1987. He was a member of the VFW, Northfield. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Mary (David) Anderson of Prior Lake, and Jan (Doug) Rechzigel of Cannon Falls; and two grandchildren, Angela and Justin Rechtizgel. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Ellingson. Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society for research. He was preceded in death by his father, Nils Ole Gaasedelen, his mother, Isabel Naeseth, and his brother Francis Wilbur Gaasedelen. He is survived by his son, Jon (Marilyn Listvan); daughter, Barbara; and son, James (Allison) and grandson, Erik.

Onie was born in Minneapolis, MN and attended the University of Minnesota graduating with a BBA. He also attended Harvard Business School where he received an MBA. He served in the US Navy during WW II and was stationed in the South Pacific aboard the USS Tryon. After WW II he was called back to serve during the Korean Conflict. He remained in the Naval Reserves completing twenty years of military service. He achieved the rank of Commander.

Onie was the administrator of the Minneapolis Teacher's Pension Fund which he ran until his retirement in 1985.

Onie's hobby was aviation. He and his brother, Fran, owned several planes together over the years and enjoyed using them for pleasure trips both short and long. He was also a proud member of Torske Klubben since 1962.

Onie and his family would like to thank the staff of Castle Ridge and especially the staff of The Colony in Eden Prairie for their kindness and support during his last few months.

Marjorie was born on August 2nd, 1928 to Walton and Kathleen (Moore) Thune of Ladner, South Dakota. She was the fourth daughter of eight girls. She grew up on the Thune Ranch, raising sheep, riding horses, and collecting rattlers from rattle snakes. Marjorie graduated from Bowman High School in 1946. Following graduation, she earned an Emergency Teacher’s Certificate at college in Dickinson. She taught one year at Whiting School, 1946-47, where a romance with John began to bloom.
In 1970-72, she enjoyed her work at the Sunset Nursing Home in Bowman, North Dakota.

Marjorie and John Torpen were married in Scranton, North Dakota, on June 8, 1947. They made their home on the Torpen Hillview Farm five miles south of Scranton where they raised grain and livestock. During this time God gave them six children. Marjorie was a wonderful mother, wife and partner to John for almost 63 years.

Being a talented seamstress, Marjorie sewed clothing for herself and her six children; including school clothes, prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and a wedding dress. She also took great pleasure in gardening, family genealogy, cooking and baking, crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She was a 4-H leader and a member of Ladies Aide and Homemakers. Marjorie also had a love for reading and music; often whistling, humming, or singing a familiar tune.

Marjorie’s greatest joy was time spent with her six children and their families on the farm. Her hospitality included Sunday dinners with relatives and neighbors, which were often followed by games of Pinochle. She enjoyed afternoons with friends at the Scranton Senior Center having coffee and playing “May I.” While living at Western Horizons Assisted Living in Hettinger and Sunrise Village in Bowman she made many new friends and enjoyed putting puzzles together.

Marjorie’s inviting smiles and kind words made others feel welcome. Those who knew her loved her and were embraced by her unconditional love.

Family trips to the Cave Hills for church picnics and Thune and Torpen family gatherings were an important part of Marjorie’s life. During separate travels to Europe, England, and Norway, Marjorie enjoyed sightseeing, spending time with family, and researching family genealogy.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Gladys (Kahrs), Phyllis (Palczewski), and Peggy (Brown); and one infant brother, Benjamin. She is survived by her four sisters; Dorothy (Thunem), Clara (Flemmer), Betty Joy (Njos), and Judy (McCann); and her six children: Dianna (Richard) Kalina, Marsha (Robert) Nelson, Jacqueline (James) Basaraba, Randal (Deborah) Torpen, Sandra (James) Smith, and Jane (Neil) Lessman; 16 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

They set up housekeeping at Mercer where they reared Murray and Arlette and where Pearl taught 7th and 8th grade. In the summer of 1962, Pearl and Archie moved their family to Minot. Once settled in Minot, Pearl continued her teaching career at Jefferson Elementary, Jim Hill Junior High and Minot Bishop Ryan where she taught present Governor John Hoeven. Pearl's life centered around her teaching career and her family. She loved holiday gatherings, playing cards, gardening, fishing, and caring for those around her.??In her later years, Pearl was blessed by the loving care of special angels here on earth: Mary Wright and Linda Gieser, Minot: Joni Anderson of Granville; Karen and Tom Krebsbach, Carolyn Barden, and Dolores Boozenny, Max; Jane and Jim Jundt, Minot; and Janene and Michael Kittleson, Benedict. Alice (Lien) Eggum, age 97, of Dennison, passed away Friday, September 6, 2019, at the View Senior Living in Cannon Falls.

Alice was born April 26, 1922, the daughter of Andrew and Ann (Lockrem) Lien in Northfield Township. She attended Oak Grove country school, the same school where she had known Obert, her husband to be. Obert was a few years older and the families lived close to each other. He would give Alice and other kids sleigh rides to school. Alice’s sister lived in California and had wanted her to come out for work so Alice bought a train ticket and went to Southern California during WWII where she worked for North American Aviation as a “Rosie the Riveter” and helped manufacture the B-51 Mustang and B-25 Billy Mitchell. She enjoyed living in California but was needed at home to help care for her father. Upon her return, she began working at Carleton College. Alice was united in marriage to Obert Eggum on February 19, 1949, at Pastor Adolph Egge’s home in Northfield. The couple would be blessed with four sons. They made their home in Northfield Township on the family farm where they raised their family and farmed for many years.

Alice had a strong faith and was an active member at Vang Lutheran Church where she served on the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school. She had a strong work ethic that was evident over her life working at the defense plant and farming.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, patching jeans, crafts and taking pictures. She also loved plants because according to the family, she just couldn’t kill them. She was also very thoughtful serving house guest meals or other homemade treats when they came to visit. Alice was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be dearly missed and affectionately remembered.

She is survived by her sons Lance Eggum of Minneapolis; Kevin (Connie) Eggum of Cannon Falls; Clyde (Chrystine) Eggum of Dennison; Bryan (Jennifer) Eggum of Dennison; seven grandchildren Jason Eggum; Kyle Eggum (Molly Nefstead); Courtney (Joel) Rustad; Andrew (Jennifer) Eggum; Joseph (Dena) Eggum; Justin Eggum; Erin (John) Spanczak; and ten great-grandchildren Rowan Eggum; Miles Eggum; Sam Kalow; Owen Kalow; Avery Rustad; Charlie Rustad; Breck Rustad; Alonso Eggum; Kaia Eggum; and Charlotte Spanczak. Funeral services for Orlando Gerhard Lien, who passed away July 14 at the Northfield City Hospital at the age of 48, were held Monday, July 17 at 2 p.m. at the Vang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Brethren Church in Ottawa with Arne Vetrhus, her son, and the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Mrs. Vetrhus was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Waltham Township, to Sam and Anna (Lockrem) Anderson. She was raised by Andrew and Mary (Lockrem) Boe. She married Olav Vetrhus on Dec. 28, 1950, in Ottawa.

She attended Shabonna Elementary School in Ottawa, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minn., in 1941, and Bible school in Hillcrest.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mariann Vetrhus of Corona and Karen (Bill) Gillissie of Bradbury, Calif.; and two sons, Arne (Patty) and Steven, both of Salmon, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by a brother at birth; one sister, Mary Dittmer; and two brothers, Art and Howard Anderson.

Orville Finne was the most loving father, grandfather, brother and friend. He always put other people’s needs before his own and would do anything he could for others, even strangers. He passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, September 16th at the age of 78 after a 2 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Orville was born to George and Norma (Esther) Finne on July 8th, 1943, in Owatonna, MN. After graduating from West Concord High School, he enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1961-1965. He was stationed at Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan and then at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. He returned to West Concord and worked at the State Hospital in Faribault for a few years and then sold life insurance for many years. He married Katherine Langerud in 1967 and they raised four children together. They were later divorced, but remained friends. Orville later drove taxi cab and limousine for Yellow Cab where he met his special friend, Margie Creech. They were together for 13 years before she passed away.

Orville loved his children and siblings dearly and was never afraid to say, “I love you very much” to them. His 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild were such a joy to him. He loved to play with them, tease them, take them fishing, and take them to the “Gucci warehouse”. Orville was an avid gardener, fisherman and collector/treasure hunter. If he was not at home, he was either gardening, fishing or finding a good deal somewhere. He was always willing to share his vegetables and help his neighbors, friends, and family. He knew a lot of random things and was always willing to share his knowledge, whether you wanted it or not. Orville’s kind heart, generosity, and sense of humor will be missed by everyone that knew him.

He is survived by his children, David, of Lake City, MN; Traci (Scott) Hammer, of Elgin, MN; Mitchell (Sara), of Eden Prairie, MN; and Jason (Lissa), of Mendota Heights, MN; his grandchildren, Lindsey (Zac) Webb, Hannah (Andy) Erickson, Nelson Finne, Isaac Hammer, Anya Hammer, Eleanor Finne, Johan, Greta, Kaia, and Gunnar Finne; great-grandchild Laurana Webb; daughter-in-law Nicole Finne, of Elgin, MN; siblings Anna Mae (Charles) Victor, of Marysville, OH; LuVerne (Paula), of West Concord, MN; Russell (Audrey), of West Concord, MN; and Ginger (Don) Tune, of New Richland, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of life will be held at the West Concord Historical Society on Sunday, September 26th from 1-4 pm with a remembrance at 3 pm. A private family burial will take place at Concord Cemetery at a later date.

She married Helmer E. Berquam on May 17, 1928 at Urland Lutheran Church where she has been a lifelong active member.

Gladys enjoyed gardening, canning, crocheting, reading and bingo. She was proud to be Norwegian and enjoyed her two trips to Norway. Gladys enjoyed being out and about, and she shared her smile with everyone she encountered!

Johnny Clarence Flom, age 92, a lifelong resident of Dennison passed away on Thursday evening, August 12, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Johnny was born at home on December 23, 1918 in Sogn, the son of John and Inga (Kolstad) Flom. He attended rural country school District #52 in Sogn. Johnny married Marion B. "Trudy" Eggum on February 22, 1945 at the Dennison parsonage. He and Trudy worked together farming and raising six children. He milked cows for 80 years.

Johnny was a lifelong, active member and held many offices at Urland Lutheran Church, where his father was a co-founder. He was also a member of the Wanamingo Township Board for many years. Johnny was proud to be 100% Norwegian. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and flying ultralight aircraft. He also loved to visit, play cards, read and be with people.

He is survived by his children, John (Diane) Flom of Faribault, Leslie (Linda) Flom of Dennison, Gail Flom of Dennison, Bonnie (Mark) Thompson of Custer, SD, Dennis Flom of Minneapolis and Darryl (Cynthia) Flom of Dennison; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Lester (Doris) Flom of Dennison; and many nieces and nephews.

Lester Edward Flom, age 88 of rural Dennison, died at his home on Saturday, August 16, 2014 of pulmonary fibrosis.

Lester was born July 21, 1926 on the family farm in rural Dennison near Sogn to John L. and Inga (Kolstad) Flom. He was the grandson of Lars and Ingeborg Flom and Christian and Gertrude Kolstad, both pioneer settlers in the Little Cannon Valley. He was sure he grew up in the best place a boy could. He had hills and woods to explore, hunt and ski. The river was for swimming, fishing and skating.

Lester attended school at District 52, a one room country school. Later he attended high school in Cannon Falls and the School of Agriculture in St. Paul.

He spent seven years in the U.S. Navy and was an overseas veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He traveled the Pacific from Alaska to Australia and from California to China with many interesting stops. Lester was in China before it became a communist country. In the spring of 1945 diplomats from all over the world gathered in San Francisco to form a new worldwide organization. Lester was assigned to a group providing security and support for them. The new organization was called the United Nations. They were sure this organization could prevent wars in the future. In 1948 he was involved in the testing of atomic bombs six, seven and eight in the Marshall Islands.

Lester began farming March 15, 1952 on the land where his parents and grandparents farmed before him. On June 21, 1952 Lester married Doris Quam at Urland Church. They were truly farming partners.

Lester enjoyed many fly-in fishing trips to Canada. He also enjoyed hunting caribou, elk, deer and antelope. He was a Twins and Vikings fan. Lester was an avid reader. Even as a boy he thought a book was a great gift. Since retiring he had checked out more than 1500 books from the Cannon Falls Public Library.

He is survived by Doris, his wife of 62 years; five children, Julie (Gary) Warner, Pam (Steve) Tralle, Kathy (Daryl) Bergs, Eric (Melanie) Flom, and Evan (Mary Ann) Flom; six grandchildren, four step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gladys Berquam, Emma Berquam, Alice Ross, and Myrtle Cummings; and brothers, twins Joseph and Johnny Flom.

Visitation will be Friday, August 22 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Urland Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls, where he was baptized, confirmed and married.
