For a few years, 38/1 and 38/3 (the upper garden) were used as a farm, but when Ola Qvam died in 1832, the farms were divided between the sons Ola and Ove Vilhjøm again.

They also had a daughter Maren (Qvåle) Kvåle (1813- ) who was married to Mo in VS

Ove B Stele (Wangensteen) writes about him: Ole Olsen Qvam. He was born on the Leirhol farm in 1778 (baptised 27 December) to parents Ole Kristofersen and Berit Torstensdater. His father, Ole Kristofersen Leirhol, had been married twice. With his first wife, he had 3 sons: Ole, Anders and Tosten and daughters Anne. Ole Kristofersen died in 1793. After him, there was a very far-reaching shift, which lasted from 1793-1797, during which time several lower court and upper court judgments were handed down between the widow and the stepson. The widow was sentenced to cease the use of the farm and leave the inheritance to the stepson, as the rightful heir and heir. The end result was that she had her considerable inheritance counted - married farmer John Kvam and moved there with her children. Her son Ole was then 14 years old. He became a clerk at Eidsvold and after his death in 1809 he became sheriff in Vang. He also became a Member of Parliament in 1821, 1822 and 1824. Member of the impeachment trial against Wedel Jarlsberg, but was postponed by the impeachment trial against Fasting. For a little understanding of the conditions at the time, a diet account will be reproduced here, which reads as follows: "In order to become sheriff and member of the Storting Qvam communisert, the bailiff's official is hereby notified that with the Royal Ministry of Finance, Trade and Customs' letter of 12 Feb. has one received Sheriff O. Qvam's bill with the accompanying vouchers for his accruals on the occasion of his meeting as a representative at the last session of the Storting and a member of the Supreme Court. The bill is as follows: a) For diet for himself from 20 January 1821 to 24 June 1822, which is 521 days at 2 spd. Is 1032 spd. from here truncated for 2 days 4 spd. Again 1038 spd. b) For entertainment for a hired servant during the time the Storting lasted and likewise entertainment for a servant during the time the impeachment lasted, as well as allowance for travel, shot allowance and medication for a doctor, a total of 422 spd. All in all 1460 spd. Lensmand O. Qvam was married to Gjertrud Vilhelmsdatter Baggethun, - a descendant of Wangenstenslegten on Steile - bought the farm. Kvale and lived there with his family 3 sons and 2 daughters. However, the owner of upper Kvale - Uppågar'n kalvet- - was heavily in debt to sheriff Qvam as well as to a loan institution in Kristiania, and the result was that "Uppågar'n" was auctioned inside the capital and Qvam was the only e who "made a bid" and got the contract. The grant had to be "somewhat loose" because the first year the sheriff did not dare to harvest the farm's crop, which with stubble and stubble remained under the snow during the winter. Sheriff O. Qvam's eldest son, Ole, inherited his father's farm, married the Lars Wangensten's youngest daughter Ingelef, who brought a dowry of 1,500 spd (NOK 6,000) at the time, a very large fortune. Despite these two combined riches, in the end, however, it was rather small with regard to Ole and Ingelev Kvale's finances. was like everything they had under their hands, went as "good for the sun". The second-oldest son, Ove, got the "Uppågar'n" and was married to one of the village's most distinguished girls - from Remme. The youngest son, Vilhelm, became very "glazed in a glass" and in a short time destroyed his considerable inheritance and ended up as a wheat digger and daily wage earner on his father's estate. Among other measures, which Sheriff Qvam mentioned, is exploitation of the birch forest on Hellestrand . The forest there was used as common property, but in Sheriff Qvam's time was divided between the landowners in such a way that Mitre Kvale - sheriff's farm - got a disproportionately large share. And it has been said that it was not so good to oppose the interests of the countryman in the good old days. - But with regard to such "jobs" as the one mentioned above, sheriff Qvam was not alone in carrying out, sheriff Lars Wangensten got the forest in the northern part of the Skakedalen exploited in a similar way, as the upper Steile - the sheriff's farm - got almost everything, Lower Steile got little and Bergegårdene almost nothing. Ole Qvam died on 25 November 1832.-

He is probably a son of Ola Kristofferson Lerohl (1737-1793) and Berit Torsteinsdatter Skjel Leirol (1755-1835), a union mentioned on p. 885 of the bygdebok. That “probably” is what is assumed here. In the 1801 census, Berit is living on Qvam with her 2nd husband, Jon Ovesson Kvam. Included in their household is a nine year-old Andris Olsen listed as her son.

Jim’s VS agrees with Andris being a son of Ola and Berit. In Jim’s VS, Andris is Andris Olsen Leirol, #I57. Jim’s notes in VS: “Han kalles ofte Andris Olsen Kvam, fordi han vokste opp der sammen med moren og stefaren. Han ble gårbruker på Dalåker da han giftet seg med enken der i 1821. Andris ga bruk nr. 1 til stesønnen Nils Kristoffersen i 1832 og flyttet til bruk 2, syg arden.”

Translation: He is often called Andris Olsen Kvam because he grew up there with his mother and stepfather. He became a farmer at Dalåker when he married the widow there in 1821. Andris gave house #1 to stepson Nils Kristoffersen in 1832 and moved to house #2.

He was called Anders Olsen something at the time of his marriage to Ingeborg. The surname in the marriage record is unclear but it’s not (yet) Dallager.

Ingri Thompson, a young wife and mother died at her home in Eureka. Funeral services were held and her remains were laid to rest in the Norwegian Christiania Lutheran Church cemetery. Ingri, her husband Knute and their daughter Betsy came to this country in 1854 from Valders, Norway. They first settled in Wisconsin and two years later, in 1856 they came to Eureka township where they pre-empted a homestead near the Twin churches. Knute, Ingri and Betsy were three of the original members of the Christiania Lutheran Church. The entire community extends sympathy to the bereaved husband and ten year old child.

He became a successful farmer and community leader. He married Ingebor Haugen in 1867 and stayed on the Bonde farm all of his life. He built a much-admired stone house in 1875 and kept a journal, written in Norwegian.

Of his 11 children, seven survived to adulthood.


The Tosten E. Bonde Farmhouse, built of locally quarried limestone in 1875, is one of the oldest structures of its kind in Wheeling Township, Rice County. The Bonde family emigrated to Minnesota in 1849 and homesteaded land in 1855. The private home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

In 1849, Einer and Berit Bonde emigrated from Vang, Valdres, Norway, with their two sons, Tosten and Halvor. Berit’s daughter, Kari, from a previous marriage, and her husband, Thomas Veblen, had immigrated to the United States two years earlier in 1847. The Veblens were the parents of famed sociologist and economist Thorstein Veblen. According to family history, the Bondes “dreamed of following Kari’s footsteps to the new world.”

The Bonde family lived in Port Washington, Wisconsin, before moving to Winneshiek County, Iowa, in the spring of 1854. The following year, on June 9, the family settled on 160 acres in section 11 of Wheeling Township in Minnesota Territory. In 1866, the Veblens moved from Mount Vernon, Wisconsin, to a farm in Wheeling Township, Minnesota. The rural community of primarily Norwegian settler-colonists was composed of respected farmers and civic leaders, including Halvor Quie and Osmund Osmundson, founder of Nerstrand.

From 1855 to 1875, the family resided in a log home. In 1865, Tosten, who was described as a “very able young man,” purchased the farm from his father. His brother Halvor, a Civil War veteran, had settled in Swift County, Minnesota. Two years later, Tosten married Ingebor Hougen on April 3, 1867. They had eleven children, born between 1868 and 1887. Tosten’s family lived with his parents until the stone house was completed in the summer of 1875. His father, Einer, passed away on August 27, 1875, and Berit died on March 12, 1877.

In a diary started in 1888, Tosten Bonde noted the improvements to the farm site: a barn was added in 1870, the stone farmhouse in 1875, a machinery shed in 1883, a granary in 1886, and a milkhouse in 1887. The two-and-a-half-story, L-shaped farmhouse was built on a small rise and constructed of locally quarried limestone from the Nerstrand and Faribault area. Situated near a well-traveled highway approximately one mile from Nerstrand, the gabled farmhouse became a focal landmark in rural Rice County after its completion in 1875.

The farmstead, which is still owned by Bonde family descendants in 2020, is in many respects a “living” document to rural agricultural heritage and practices by a single family dating back to Minnesota’s territorial days. Tosten’s diary offers glimpses into late-nineteenth-century farm life with entries like: “The year, 1887, was very dry and the chinch bug destroyed all the wheat and part of the oats. The hay crop was very short.” In his entry for April 12, 1891, he wrote: “Horses are sick from distemper.” The family history noted that Oscar, a son, remarked they cured the horses by “burning rubbers and had the horses inhale the fumes.”

The family history also tells of tragedy within the farmhouse’s stone walls. When an epidemic of black measles occurred in late March and early April of 1882, three sons died in one week: Edward, who was fourteen, Ingebrit, who was six, and Albert, who was barely a year old, fell victim to the disease. According to family lore, when Ingebor worked in her garden, “she would look to Valley Grove Cemetery and long for her little ones buried there on the distant hill.”

In 1890, Tosten was elected to the Minnesota State Legislature; he was reelected the following year. By early 1895, he developed stomach cancer, and he passed away at his home on October 14, 1897. The fifty-four-year-old was survived by his wife and seven children. One obituary noted he was “a good citizen and highly esteemed and respected in the community.”

In February 1981, Britta Bloomberg’s submission for the Minnesota Historical Properties Inventory Form stated, “The Bonde Farmhouse is significant both for its association with a prominent immigrant family and for its notable limestone construction and outstanding integrity.” In April 1982, the private home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

From the Faribault Republican, Oct. 20, 1897, via Find A Grave:

Died at his home in the town of Wheeling on Thursday evening, last, Oct. 14, of cancer of the stomach, with which he had suffered for two and a half years. The funeral was held on Monday, with services conducted by Rev. N. A. Quammen, and the remains were buried in the cemetery connected with Valley Grove church. Mr. Bonde was born in Norway, Jan. 12th, 1843. In 1849 he came with his parents to America and first settled at Port Washington, Wis.; five years later removed to Winneshiek County, Iowa, and in 1855 came to Rice County and located on section no.11, in Wheeling, which has ever since been his home. April 3d, 1867, he married Miss Ingebor Haugen, who survives him, and to them were born eleven children, four of whom are dead, and seven are living; Thomas, Bernhard, Anna, Alfred, Oscar, Edward and Carl, all of whom are at home, except Thomas, who is in St. Paul. Mr. Bonde was a good citizen and highly esteemed and respected in the community in which he lived so long, and was honored by election to various offices in the town and as a representative in the legislature, in which he served during the session of 1891.

In the 1865 census, she is probably the 21 year-old Berith Iversdatter working as a tjenestepige on Endre Olsen’s Lien søndre farm.

Her connection to Johannes Knudsen Haugen has conflicting information and the bygdeboks aren’t helpful. Among the conflicts, for example, the Bredeson Family Tree calls her Berith J Knutson, daughter of Aaste and someone named Knudt Evenson. The Bredeson Family Tree does have (most of) Berith’s birth date right. Melvin Haugen’s tree shows her as Berit Iversdatter Gjevre and born in Vang 8 Feb 1845.

In the 1910 census, she is Berith Knutson, 65, now a widow and is head-of-household for the farm in Split Rock Twp, Minnehaha County. Living with her is her daughter, Martha Johnson, 25, and sons Andrew, 24, Otto, 22, and Iver, 29, all with the surname Johnson and all shown as single. Also living with the family is Mary J Tvedt, 39, a boarder. Berith still claims 8 children, 7 still living. So for some reason, the children living with her have adopted the surname Johnson.

In the 1920 census, Berith is a 75 year-old widow living on the Split Rock Twp farm headed up by her son Andrew Johnson, age 35. Also in the household is Martha E Johnson, 37, Iver W Johnson, 39, and Aaster K. Evenson, 96, grandmother. Berith is shown to have come to the U.S. in 1872. Aaste is shown as coming to the U.S. in 1867.

The bygdebok (Vang A, p. 840) implies that he stayed in Norway and, of the two Oles, Ole 2 is the one who came to the U.S.

In his entry under Mhyre (Vang A, p. 802), he was livaursmann under Dalåker and husmann on Klettadn.

In the 1880 census, he would seem to be the 59 year-old Ole Anderson living in Udolpho Twp, Mower County, Minnesota. Included in the household are his apparent wife, Anna P., age 38, and 8 children: Gertie, 20, Mary, 15, Andrew, 11, Isabella, 8, Berta, 7, Olena, 5, Anna, 3, and Antoine, 9 months. This second Ola was born 10 Nov 1827, bapt 26 Dec, in Vang to Anders Olsen Dalager and Ingeborg Olsdatter.

His baptismal sponsors were Maren Johnsdatter Quam, Ingeborg Knutsdatter Böe, (something) Sönderohl, Knud Söyne, and (something) Johannessen Sonderohl.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he and Ingeborg and their four sons were on Dahlager 49. He was gaardbruker og selveier.

As Ole Andersen Dalager, he emigrated with his wife Ingeborg Amundsdatter and their five children in July of 1869.

In the 1880 census, he is Ole Dalagher Anderson, age 54, living with his family in Udolpho Twp, Mower County, Minnesota. Others in the household are his wife Isabel, 55, and their children Andrew, 26, Christopher, 20, Ole, 16, Betsy, 13, Antoine, 10, and Emma, 7. The two youngest children were born in Minnesota.

According to an obit from the Ward County Independent of Minot County (cited in Find A Grave, K. Pike), he died in Lansing, Minnesota. His sons were A.A. Dalager of Minot and Ole Dalager of Sawyer. “The decedent leaves also three other children.”

An 81 year-old Ole A. Dalager died in Mower County on 22 Nov 1906. His children were Ole of Renville (a different Ole), Andrew, Chris, and Ole of North Dakota, Ed. A. of Mower County, Anton, Mrs. Sam Kobes of Cathay, North Dakota, and Mrs. Bertha Jackson of St. James, Minnesota.

The census specifically refers to these four younger sons as theirs and not his or hers. It also specifically refers to Marit as their child and not his or hers. The bygdebøk says that Anders lived in Lykkjun, farm 106/4 of Ø. Helle. Specifically, “ein mindre part, med tun ovafor gardstunet.”

At the time of the 1865 Norwegian census she was Berith Arnesdatter, born 1847 in Vang, living with the household of Torger Ejvindsen and Sigrid Torstensdatter (born 1822 and 1825, respectively, in Øystre Slidre Prgj.) on the farm of Holien in Vang. Berith is shown as unmarried, “hans Søsterdatter”, and “bestyrer hans Husholdning.” Listed just before Berith, and the reference of “his”, is Ole Andersen, born 1787 in Vang, “deres Føderaadsmand.” (That Ole is I8411.)

In the 1900 census, Betsy and family are living in New Market Township. The family consists of Betsy, 50 (born August 1849), Ole, 24 (born Sep 1875), Tillie, 21 (born June 1878), Oscar, 16 (born June 1883), Albert, 15 (born 1885), Olga, 12 (born Sep 1887), and Clara, 5 (born January 1895). For some reason, Anna Maria is not listed with the family and does not appear to have been included anywhere else in the census. Olga and Clara were born in Minnesota. Betsy is shown as having had 10 children, 8 still living. The family emigrated in 1887. Betsy owns the farm but it is still mortgaged.

In the 1905 state census, Betsy Ellingbo lives in Scott County with her children Ole, Anna, Albert, and Clara. (Olga seems to have been missed.)

In the 1910 census (May 10th), Betsy is 60 and four of her children are living with her: Anna, 29, Albert, 25, Olga, 22, and Clara, 15. Olga’s occupation is clearly shown as servant; Albert’s as a traveling something in the creamery industry.

Two doors down from Betsy is her son Ole and his new wife Rosie.

Evey says: “My father’s parents were buried ... in an area outlined in cement. A spire-like gravestone was in the middle of the area with Grandpa’s name on it and with ‘born’ and ‘died’ written in Norwegian with the dates. Grandma Ellingboe was also buried there.”

In the 1918 Alien Registration, she was Betsy Ellingboe, age 69, of Lakeville, Scott County.

Shown as “Betsy” in the 1920 census. In that enumeration, she is shown as the head of household, owning her property free of any mortgage, and Albert, Clara, and Olga are shown as living with her. Also in that enumeration, Berit is shown as being unable to read or to write. The census enumerator apparently had some trouble determining whether or not Berit was able to speak English; he finally concluded that she was.

Her death certificate, for which her daughter Thea was the informant, gives Berit’s birth year as 1847. She lived at 306 Washington in Northfield where she had lived since the summer of 1924. She died of cardiorenal disease.

She is probably the “Betsy, widow of Ole Ellingboe” living at 312 Washington in the 1926 Northfield city directory. Evey believes that Berit, and probably Olga and Clara, moved to Northfield after Albert and Annie were married and took over the Ellingboe farm in New Market.

She doesn’t seem to have an individual gravestone at the cemetery plot in the West Christiania Cemetery.

Notes:

In the 1900 Norwegian census he is single, a skomager, living on the Helle øvre (gaard) farm run or owned by his brother Anders. There is some suggestion (“Fælles husholdning ned Knut Arnesen.”) that Ole and his brother Knut maintain a separate household on that farm. The farm has a “haandverkshus”, perhaps a separate building in which Ole may have had his shoemaker business.
