Using the 1801 census as our guide, the son of Knut Halvorsen and Berit Haaversdatter who was born first was named Halvor Knudsen. Their second son was named Haaver Knudsen.

The listing of he and his siblings in Jim’s VS is confusing. If Håvard’s father is Knut, then he should have been Håvard Knutsen (the same as his older brother). All of this Håvard’s other siblings are appropriately named as Knutsen or Knutsdatter in Jim’s VS.

In the 1900 census, he is shown, quite incorrectly, as born December 1829. That census also shows that he came to the U.S. in 1854. He is the head of household for a farm in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County. He is a widower and the household consists of himself, son Nels (also a widower), daughter Mary Boe (recently married but with no husband in the household), son Christ, 26, son Thomas, 23, daughter Anna, 20, grandson Thomas, 9, and granddaughter Mary O., 7.

In the 1910 census, he is the 84 year-old widower Thomas Haugen living with his son C. T. Haugen and family in Warsaw Twp, Goodhue County.

Thomas N. Haugen, one of the oldest of the pioneers in this community died Sunday, March 6, 1921 at his old home in Warsaw township. He became ill on the tenth day of January and was confined for the greater part of the time to his bed. He weakened day by day until he quietly passed away. He was born in Vang, Valders, Norway on December 18, 1825. {Not correct.} His parents were Nels and Marit Haugen. There, in the country of his birth, he spent his boyhood days at the home of his parents. In 1854, he emigrated to America and located at Manitowoc, Wisconsin where he resided for two years, then he moved to Goodhue County, Minnesota where he took a homestead, settling on 160 acres in Section 32 in Warsaw township. On this farm he made his home continuously until his death. In 1863 he was joined in marriage to Miss Gertrude Lyken by Rev. John Fjeld. She died on August 8, 1895. He leaves six children to mourn his loss: Nels Haugen, Minot, North Dakota Mrs. A.E. (Gertrude) Ramsey, Harvey, North Dakota Mrs. Rev. V.E (Anna) Boe, Finley, North Dakota Chris T. Haugen, who lives on the old homestead Thomas T. Haugen, Dennison, Minnesota Mrs. Carl Brekke, Sharon, North Dakota He also leaves a sister in Warsaw township a Mrs. A.T. Remmen. All of the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Carl Brekke. Mr. Haugen was, at the time of his death, the oldest man in the community. He was also the oldest man in Vang's congregation and also the oldest in Rev. Haupt's charge. He was one of the organizers's of Vang's congregation and had always been a faithful member. He was a man of quiet disposition, loved and respected by his friends and neighbors. He took a great delight in mediating upon the word of God and was always a regular and faithful attendant at church. During the last year of his life he was feeble on account of poor health. There are now only a few left of those who came over from Norway in the same ship that he came. There are two yet living in Warsaw township; his sister, Mrs. A.T. (Thora) Remmen and H.E. Kasa, both of whom are younger than he was. The funeral was held Friday, March 11, 1921, with a short service at the home and regular services at Vang's Church. The services were conducted by Rev. A. Hauge who preached the funeral sermon. During the services at the church, Rev. V.E. Boe, of Finley, North Dakota, a son-in-law of the deceased, made a few remarks and spoke briefly on the beautiful an Christian life that the deceased had lived. After Rev. Boe had spoken, he sang a solo, "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name" in the Norwegian language. The remains were then taken to Vang's cemetery where interment was made. The pallbearers were: E.E. Haugen, T.L. Soine, Mr. T. Holten, E.H. Holien, A.E. Flom and A.O. Bonde.

Supposedly changed name to Spelleman, became famous for playing the violin, and toured the USA. This is not true; perhaps he is confused with another Anders.

In the 1900 Norwegian census, this Anders is the main farmer on Helle øvre (gaard), farm unit number 4b, in Vang, Valdres. He is married. The other two residents of that farm are Anders’s younger brothers, Knut and Ole, both still single. Knut is a snedker, Ole is a skomager.

The bygdebøk says that Anders lived in Lykkjun, farm 106/4 of Ø. Helle. Specifically, “ein mindre part, med tun ovafor gardstunet.”

She is the younger of two sisters named Berit. She appears to be the only sibling who came to the U.S. or had children come to the U.S.

At the time of the 1865 Norwegian census she was Berith Arnesdatter, born 1847 in Vang, living with the household of Torger Ejvindsen and Sigrid Torstensdatter (born 1822 and 1825, respectively, in Øystre Slidre Prgj.) on the farm of Holien in Vang. Berith is shown as unmarried, “hans Søsterdatter”, and “bestyrer hans Husholdning.” Listed just before Berith, and the reference of “his”, is Ole Andersen, born 1787 in Vang, “deres Føderaadsmand.” (That Ole is I8411.)

In the 1900 census, Betsy and family are living in New Market Township. The family consists of Betsy, 50 (born August 1849), Ole, 24 (born Sep 1875), Tillie, 21 (born June 1878), Oscar, 16 (born June 1883), Albert, 15 (born 1885), Olga, 12 (born Sep 1887), and Clara, 5 (born January 1895). For some reason, Anna Maria is not listed with the family and does not appear to have been included anywhere else in the census. Olga and Clara were born in Minnesota. Betsy is shown as having had 10 children, 8 still living. The family emigrated in 1887. Betsy owns the farm but it is still mortgaged.

In the 1905 state census, Betsy Ellingbo lives in Scott County with her children Ole, Anna, Albert, and Clara. (Olga seems to have been missed.)

In the 1910 census (May 10th), Betsy is 60 and four of her children are living with her: Anna, 29, Albert, 25, Olga, 22, and Clara, 15. Olga’s occupation is clearly shown as servant; Albert’s as a traveling something in the creamery industry.

Two doors down from Betsy is her son Ole and his new wife Rosie.

Evey says: “My father’s parents were buried ... in an area outlined in cement. A spire-like gravestone was in the middle of the area with Grandpa’s name on it and with ‘born’ and ‘died’ written in Norwegian with the dates. Grandma Ellingboe was also buried there.”

In the 1918 Alien Registration, she was Betsy Ellingboe, age 69, of Lakeville, Scott County.

Shown as “Betsy” in the 1920 census. In that enumeration, she is shown as the head of household, owning her property free of any mortgage, and Albert, Clara, and Olga are shown as living with her. Also in that enumeration, Berit is shown as being unable to read or to write. The census enumerator apparently had some trouble determining whether or not Berit was able to speak English; he finally concluded that she was.

Her death certificate, for which her daughter Thea was the informant, gives Berit’s birth year as 1847. She lived at 306 Washington in Northfield where she had lived since the summer of 1924. She died of cardiorenal disease.

Her obit was in the Northfield News, April 2, 1926 edition:

Mrs. Betsy Ellingboe died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Alvin Liggett, Friday, March 26, 1926, at 12:15 following a lingering illness of several months. Mrs. Ellingboe made her home with her children, having lived in the Liggett home for a year. She is probably the “Betsy, widow of Ole Ellingboe” living at 312 Washington in the 1926 Northfield city directory. Evey believes that Berit, and probably Olga and Clara, moved to Northfield after Albert and Annie were married and took over the Ellingboe farm in New Market.

She doesn’t seem to have an individual gravestone at the cemetery plot in the West Christiania Cemetery.

He’s simply Ole Nelson in the French Family Tree.

The bygdebok (p. 787) calls him Ola Nilsson Tørstadeiga. He was called Ole Nilsen Ellingbø in the church book entry for Nel’s birth. He was called Ole Nielson Kattevold in the entry for Anders’s birth and for Helge’s birth and for the family’s emigration record.

Shown as Ole Nielsson in the 1865 Norwegian census. He was a “husmand med jord og smed” on the Grunkø farm in Hoved subparish in Vang parish. He was 38, his wife Sigri Olsdatter was 31, and they had two sons: Niels, 7, and Ole, 3. Grunkø, aka Grunke or Grunketeigen, was a husmannplassen under Øvre Kattevøl.

Ole and his family had been in the state for 19 years, in the present enumeration district for 18 years.

In the 1900 census, he and his family are still in New Market. The household consists of Ole Nailson, 74 (b. June 1826), Sara, 65 (b. Dec 1834), Ole O., 36 (b. Aug 1863), Andrew, 26 (b. May 1874), Nails, 41 (b. 1859), Ole, nephew, 10 (b. Jan 1890), and Henry, nephew, 4 (b. Dec 1895). The youngest Ole had been born in Dakota, Henry in Minnesota, and everyone else in Norway. Funeral services were held at Vang church Thursday afternoon, Jan. 6, for Nels T. Haugen, who passed away Monday morning, Jan. 3, at Minneapolis after a few days' illness of pneumonia. The services were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Adolph Egge, who preached the funeral sermon. During the services, Mrs. Gertrude Boe Overby of St. Olaf college, a niece of Mr. Haugen, sang two hymns, one in Norwegian and the other in English. There were many beautiful floral offerings, and several gifts in his memory from relatives and friends to missions and charity. The services were attended by a large number of people, who had come to pay their last respects to their departed friends. The Rev. V. E. Boe, a brother-in-law of the deceased, was present at the funeral and spoke briefly at the close of the services. The interment was made in Vang cemetery. The pallbearers were: John Ellingboe, Ole Hoiby, John M. Lie, Nels L. Nesheim, Anton Remmen and Ludvig Soine. Nels T. Haugen was born in Warsaw township December 20, 1862, a son of the late Thomas and Gertrude Haugen. He was baptized as a young child by the late Rev. B. J. Muus and confirmed in 1875 by the Rev. M. O. Boeckman of St. Paul who then was the pastor of Vang congregation. His boyhood days were spent attending the common and parochial schools of the neighborhood. In 1887 he was married to Miss Regina Brekke of Ottertail county, and there he and his wife were engaged in farming. Mrs. Haugen died in 1894. In 1900 the family moved to Minot, N. D. Shortly after his arrival at Minot, Mr. Haugen was employed for several years in the lumber yard of Tosten Kulaas, a former resident of Warsaw township. After several years' work in the lumber yard, he was appointed deputy sheriff of Ward county, N.D., which position he held for four years. In the year 1917 he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Eide at Minot, and they went to farming near Minot until 1922, when they moved to this community, where they were engaged in farming until last fall, when they took up their residence in Minneapolis. After coming back to his old home community, he was for several years the janitor in Vang church, a work which he performed in addition to taking care of his farm work. Mr. Haugen was a man whom it was always a pleasure to meet. He had a pleasant smile and kind word for everybody. He made a large number of friends in whatever community he made his home. He leaves a large number of relatives and friends in this community. Endowed with a keen mind and a wonderful memory, he could relate incidents and interesting historical data from the pioneer days of this neighborhood. He was a great lover of horses and could many years afterwards speak of the color and the names of the horses which the pioneers had in the early days of this settlement. If anyone in recent years desired any information about the early history of this community, they were always referred to Nels Haugen. After coming back to the neighborhood where he was born, spent his childhood days and grew to manhood, he again became a member of Vang congregation. Besides his wife Mr. Haugen is survived by one son, Thomas, of Warsaw township and one daughter, Mrs. Carl Estrem, of Minneapolis. He also leaves two brothers, Chris T. Haugen of Warsaw township and Thomas T. Haugen of Northfield, and three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Ramsey of Harvey, N. D., Mrs. V. E. Boe of Finley, N. D., and Mrs. Carl Brekke of Ray, N. D.; fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. V. E. Boe, who passed away at her home Monday, April 21, were held Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran church with the pastor the Rev. B. R. Biorn, officiating. During the service Mrs. Edward Sovik, Jr., sang and she was accompanied on the organ by Mrs. G. B. Odegaard. Burial was made in the Vang cemetery, east of Dennison. Maria Haugen was born July 10, 1870, in Vang parish, the daughter of pioneers, who had emigrated from Vang in Norway in the early 1850's. She attended the rural public schools near her home and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the late Dr. J. N. Kildahl. Later she attended a business college in Red wing. On Dec. 23, 1899, she was married to Vigleik E. Boe, who at that time was a student at the United Lutheran Theological Seminary in St. Paul. Following completion of his work at St. Paul, Pastor Boe accepted his first call to Finley, N.D., where they continued to make their home for many years. From 1908 until 1915 they served Zion Lutheran church on Staten Island. Later they spent three years at Osakis then returned to Finley, N.D., where they returned to their original parish. They continued on there until retirement in 1940 when they established their home in Northfield. Mr. Boe passed away in 1953. In recent years Mrs. Boe had made her home with her daughter, Miss Esther Boe. She is survived by three sons and three daughters. They are Mrs. Oscar Overby and Miss Esther Boe of Northfield and Mrs. Harold Everson of Baldwin, Wis.; Marcus Boe, Eagle Grove, Iowa; the Rev. Victor Boe of Concordia College, Moorhead and the Rev. Egbert T. Boe of Menominee, Wis. There are also two brothers, Christ and Thomas Haugen of Northfield and one sister, Mrs. Carl Brekke, of Ray, N.D.; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, at 2 p.m. at the Vang Lutheran church for Thomas T. Haugen, 86, who passed away at the St. Olaf Rest Home in Northfield, Thursday, July 11. In the absence of the regular pastor, the Rev. B. J. Blikstad, the Rev. H. S. Bly, officiated. The vocalist was Mrs.Oscar Overby with Mrs. Cyrus Midje at the organ. The pallbearers were Herbert Haugen, Donald Haugen, Gerhard Haugen, Andrew Hoverstad, William Hunt and George Sevcik. Interment was in the Vang Cemetery. Thomas T. Haugen, son of Thomas N. and Gertrude Haugen, was born Nov. 16, 1876, in Warsaw Township. He attended the local schools and was a member of the Vang Lutheran Church. He suffered a heart attack at the St. Olaf Rest Home, where he had lived since his retirement. He never married. He was well known in Dennison as he had been employed at the Dennison Elevator Co. and at the Dennison Hardware Store before going to Northfield, where he was employed for many years at Carleton College before he retired. He is survived by two brothers, Christ and Carl of Dennison and one sister in North Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.

Mrs. John Carr Passes Away at Jamestown Home

Jamestown, N. D., March 6 --- Mrs. John Carr, wife of States' Attorney Carr, passed away at midnight Wednesday night, following an illness of about two weeks. Mrs. Carr has been in poor health for almost two years, but had been gaining in health and strength up to about the first of the year. About two weeks ago, she was taken with what was considered a very mild attack of influenza, and was not considered seriously ill until Wednesday noon. She failed very rapidly from then on until the time of death.

The deceased was forty-five years of age, having been born in Dennison, Minnesota, on May 19, 1874. Her maiden name was Marie Remmen, and she was married to Mr. Carr on August 22, 1905 in Minnesota, coming directly to Jamestown with her husband who had started in business here three years before. Mrs. Carr was a graduate of the State Normal School at Valley City and taught in the city schools at that place for about six years prior to her marriage.

Mrs. Carr leaves in addition to her husband, four children: Edwin, aged 13; Mary, aged 10; William, aged 5; and Martha, aged two years and five months. She also leaves her mother, Thora (Mrs. Anders T. Remmen) of Dennison, Minnesota, two brothers, Martin Remmen of Hettinger, North Dakota and Dr. Nils Remmen of Chicago, Illinois, and two sisters, Margaret (Mrs. Kjostel A. Bonhus) of Valley City, North Dakota and Randine (Mrs. Knute H. Braaten) of Belfield, North Dakota.

According to Ed, Marit and Elling lived in many parts of the country but, for the last years of their lives, lived in Omak, Washington. Jan confirms this.

On her death bed, Marit Lee thought she was again on the boat coming to America.

At the time of the 1900 census (June 27th), the Lees were living in Pembina County in North Dakota in Walhalla Village. The family consisted of Elling H., 28 (born October 1871), Mary, 24 (born June 1875), Harry O., 3 (born August 1896), and Floyd M., 1 (born July 1898). Elling and the boys were born in Minnesota. Mary emigrated in 1882 and was a naturalized citizen. She and Elling had been married for five years. She had borne 2 children, both still living. Elling was a salesman and they rented their house (which was not a farm). Mary would have been pregnant with Ella at the time of the census-taker’s visit.

Ilone says: Mary was a wonderful, loving grandmother who always kept very busy helping other people. Ilone always felt as if she were her favorite grandchild but later learned that every grandchild thought that he/she was the favorite. Her cookie jar was always full of gingersnaps. She was a very active member of the Presbyterian church.

Evey goes on to say: “When Pa and his parents and three siblings had come from Norway in 1881, they had lived in Wisconsin for about two years and then had come to this area, living for three weeks with an aunt of Pa’s father [Sigrid] until another baby was born [Oskar], and then in a sod house. (Ma told me that the aunt had written to Pa’s family saying, ‘Why don’t you move here, because from our place you can see the spires of three churches.’ Just what the meaning of that was, I’m not sure.) A year after the move, my grandfather, Ove, built the house. Albert was born there and lived there all his life.”

At the time of the 1910 census (May 10th), Ole and Rosie were living in New Market, near, or perhaps on, the same farm as Ole’s mother, Betsy. Ole, 34, and Rose, 21, are shown as having been married only 3 months. Rose would have pregnant with Ed at the time of the census.

Ole registered for the draft on September 12, 1918. He is described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. His nearest relative is “Rosa” Ellingboe.

In the 1918 Alien Registration, he is Ole Ellingboe, age 42, of Lakeville, Scott County.

The Census taker visited the Ellingboe farm on January 30, 1920, and noted 44 year-old Ole, 30 year-old Rose, 9 year-old Edwin, 7 year-old Arthur, 4 year-old Beulah, and 2 year-old Oscar. Rose and Ole were noted as having Norwegian as their native tongue and being able to speak English. Ole’s occupation was noted as “Farmer General Farm.”

In the 1940 census, Ole and his family lived in New Market Twp. The household consisted of Ole, 64, Rosie, 50, Edwin, 29, Oscar, 22, Helen, 19, Ruby, 15, Evelyn, 12, Jeanette, 4, and Albert Battin, 79, a lodger who was retired and blind. Ole and Rosie had education through 8th grade, Edwin through four years of high school, Oscar through 8th grade, Helen through one year of high school.

Ole and Rose were naturalized as citizens on November 10, 1937, in Minneapolis in U.S. District Court, 4th Division. At that time, his address was Route #2, Lakeville. Ole is described as 5’8” tall, 160 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair.

According to Evey, Ole died of an apparent stroke.

Obituary of Ole Ellingboe

Ole Ellingboe of Lakeville, age 72, died at the Sanford hospital at Farmington, Jan. 5, 1948, at 9:30 a.m. after an illness of only five days.

He was born at Valdres, Norway, Sept. 25, 1875, of parents Ove Ellingboe and Beret (Helle) Ellingboe. At the age of six years he emigrated with his parents and three sisters to America. They came to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where they resided one year. Then they came to Lakeville and settled on a farm in New Market township, Scott county, Minn. He attended the District 66 school, which was built by his father. This is the same school attended by his children. His father died at an early age leaving him to be his mother’s main stay to help support his younger brothers and sisters. He was confirmed by the Rev. Quammen and has been a faithful member of the Christiania Lutheran congregation ever since.

On February 12, 1910, he was united in holy matrimony to Miss Rose Mathilda Thompson at Bethel Lutheran church, Ward township, Todd county, Minn. They went to live on his farm, which was a part of the old homestead, and have made their home there ever since. To this union eight children were born, namely Edwin and Helen (Mrs. Clarence Campion) of Minneapolis, Arthur and Ruby (Mrs. Frank Pool) of Farmington, Beulah (Mrs. Lloyd Luckman) of Rosemount, and Oscar, Evelyn, and Jeanette at home.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and eight children, two brothers, Oscar of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Albert of Lakeville, who was critically ill at the hospital; five sisters, Mary (Mrs. E. H. Lee) of Omak, Washington, Thea (Mrs. George Tonsager) of Lakeville, Anna (Mrs. John Selmo) of Solway, Minn., Clara (Mrs. Alvin Liggett) and Miss Olga Ellingboe of Waseca, besides seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and also a sister and brother who died in infancy.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 8, at one o’clock at his home, followed by services at West Christiania Lutheran church with burial in the adjoining cemetery, Rev. Hoff officiating.

Rev. Hanson from Webster also spoke. The Webster Male Chorus sang three beautiful songs accompanied by Mrs. Walter Snesrud {#14775}. Pallbearers were Ole Ellingboe’s three sons, Oscar, Edwin, and Arthur and his three sons-in-law, Lloyd Luckman, Clarence Campion, and Frank Pool.

Many beautiful sprays of flowers were received. One of these were from the V.F.W. Post 210, and one from the 109th Fighter Squadron. Innumerable memorial gifts were received which was evidence of his many friends.

He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be sadly missed. Blessed be his memory.

In the 1905 state census, George and Thea lived a little ways away (on the same census page) from the Ellingboes in New Market Twp.

At the time of the 1910 census (April 15th), the family was renting a farm in New Market township. The family consisted of George, 31, Thea, 31, Clarence M., 4, Palmer O., 2, and Lester G., 8 months. The couple had been married for 5 years and Thea had had 3 children, 3 still living.

Her husband was the informant for her death certificate. George didn’t know who Thea’s parents were. Thea died from a cerebral hemorrhage that had occurred 10 days previously.

In the 1940 census, George and Thea, their three youngest sons, and their grandson Robert lived in New Market in the same house all of them had lived in five years before.

Oskar Ellingboe changed his name to Arthur Carney and invented a preposterous backstory in which he also changed his birth date and family history.

Ed says Oskar spent his youth in Lakeville, went into the service, and later became a Federal Prison guard at the penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. He lived in Leavenworth until he died.

Not listed with his mother and siblings in New Market Twp in the 1905 state census.

The 1910 census contains no Arthur Carney born in Kentucky within 5 years of 1887.

He was not listed in the WWI draft registrations, either as Ellingboe or as Carney.

In the 1920 census, a 33 year-old Arthur W. Carney is shown as a soldier at Fort Leavenworth. His native state is shown as Kentucky and both of his parent had been born in Kentucky. Thus, he was claiming to have been born in Kentucky several years before he married Marie.

In the 1925 Kansas census, he and Marie are living with other Hamiltons in Leavenworth. Arthur claims to be 38 years old, born in Kentucky, and working for or on the “golf links” at Ft. Leavenworth.

This same Arthur Carney, claiming to be a native of Kentucky, was living in Ohio at the time of the 1930 census. This Ohio Arthur Carney was a prison guard at the prison (U.S. Industrial Reformatory) in Scioto, Ross County, Ohio. He was married, 43, with a wife Marie, 37. This Arthur Carney was a veteran of the World War.

In the 1940 census, he was the 53 year-old Arthur W. Carney living with his wife Marie, 47, in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was a prison officer for the federal prison. Arthur claimed to have had two years of college. Marie had an eighth-grade education. The couple owned their house, worth $4000, at 712 Ninth Avenue (or 712 Central Avenue). They had lived in Leavenworth five years earlier although not at that address. The census-taker talked to both Arthur and Marie. Arthur specifically claimed that he was born in Kentucky. Thus, likely in Marie’s presence, he claimed to have been born in Kentucky, a claim Marie would have known to be false because she had met his family in Minnesota.

A note in the Leavenworth Times in August of 1952 said that Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Carney had returned home after several weeks visit with relatives in Minnesota.

According to city directories, he and Marie lived at 712 9th Avenue in Leavenworth between 1934 and his death in 1960. The couple is shown as briefly living in Alburquerque, New Mexico, in 1955, at which time he was associated with the U.S. Air Force.

A database of obituaries in the Leavenworth Times newspaper shows the death of an Arthur W. Carney in the November 20, 1960, edition.

According to his entry in Find A Grave, which includes a photo of his gravestone, he was Arthur Wilbur Carney, b. 15 Jun 1886 and died 18 Nov 1960. According to the inscription on that gravestone, apparently one supplied by the government, Arthur had been a sergeant in Company B, 88th Infantry of Kansas in World War I.

In the document requesting a military headstone for Arthur, signed by Marie H. Carney on 8 Jun 1961, of 712 Ninth Avenue, Leavenworth, the particulars of his military history are listed: Service number 341371 or 341271, Pension claim number C 122 18 08, Enlisted 10-12-1916 in Washington, Discharged 10-11-1920 at Ft. Leavenworth. He had been a Sgt, Co. B, 88th Infantry, 19th Division, U.S. Army. His date of birth was 15 Jun 1886. The branch of the service that most conforms to this description is the 88th Division, “a National Army Division organized September 4, 1917, at Camp Dodge, Iowa, from men drafted from the states of Minnesota, Iowa. the Dakotas and Illinois. Later when these first drafts had been transferred in large measure to Camps Cody, Bowie, Doniphan, Pike, Travis and Gordon, newly drafted men from these original states, together with men from Missouri and Nebraska, constituted the bulk of the Division.”

One of his nieces says: I've known since I was a little girl that he had changed his name. I think I heard that he took his middle name of "Carne," (most likely Arne) and used it as his last name because there were so many Ellingboes (really?). It was hinted, also, that maybe he changed his name so as not to be traced by someone--maybe a girl? There always seemed to be an air of mystery about it. He and Marie visited once when I was about 10 or so. I remember that Marie played our pump organ and Oscar sang. Ma said later, after that visit, that Marie had said that "the Carne's 'hail' from Kentucky." I don't know what Ma answered to that. She was no pushover. I think some of us thought his story was just to impress Marie with a more important background than he really had. I saw him again, briefly, at Uncle Albert's funeral. Once I asked Aunt Clara (Pa's youngest sister) about it when we visited her in Waseca. Oscar & Marie's picture was displayed on a table, which prompted the question. He was quite a distinguished-looking man, and Marie was very sweet-looking. Oscar resembled Albert a lot--a high forehead with hair that seemed to flow back in a high, bushy sort of way. Aunt Clara said that he left home at about 17 years old--(the 1900 census) and I think she said he went to Canada. Oscar claimed that he was born in Kentucky to wealthy parents who traveled a lot. On one of their trips they went to Norway, bringing him along as a baby. While there, they went out on a fishing expedition of sorts or a boat ride of some kind. Not wanting to take the baby along, they left him in the care of a Norwegian lady, Berit--Grandma supposely (??). Their boat was lost at sea, and Grandma brought him up as her own. Part of the story told of his being part of the Canadian Royal Mounted police, and of heroic acts during a small-pox epidemic. I also remember that they said he had had a family Bible, and maybe something else, too, with the proof--I forget what--in his locker at the prison, but it was lost in a fire there. Also, I recall that he hadn't wanted the story told to his mother as it would upset her. Two of the Lee "girls" told of how Oscar could quote pages and pages of epic poetry and verse, etc.”

Another niece in April of 2003 said:

I am delighted to tell you what I know. You can draw your own conclusions! It is a bit of a mystery. Incidentally, neither my Mother nor I knew Uncle Arthur had lived for awhile in Ohio, or, at least, Mother never mentioned it. Also, Mother never referred to him as "Oscar". I'd never heard that name until my cousin, Dorothy Olson, whom we have only recently come to know rather well, said that was his given name.

I think my Mother, as the 'baby" of the family, was always very special to Uncle Arthur. He and Aunt Marie visited us, if not frequently, at least every once in awhile and I have clear memories of them both; very dear memories. Aunt Marie was a very sweet person with absolutely beautiful handwriting. Uncle Arthur could recite numerous poems, epic and otherwise, from memory. I have a notebook in which he wrote down these poems for me. Family, in general, was very special to Uncle Arthur and everyone and everything related to family was always "the best".

Uncle Arthur left home, the family farm, at a young age and had a variety of adventures, including service in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (and had tales to tell of those years); in the army in the Philippines (I have some photographs of him taken there); lastly as a guard at the Federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, where we visited them.

He was completely convinced that the family name should be Carney, not Ellingboe, and had his name legally changed, though he never told his mother and consequently, as I understand it, his mother never met his wife. It must have been very awkward. That must have been puzzling for his mother, and a source of pain, too, I would think, as well as requiring endless evasions.

Uncle Arthur said he had documentation which proved that an Irish family named Carney, who lived in Kentucky, were in the habit of going to the Norwegian fjords to fish. On one such expedition, they took their son, their son's wife and infant son, along. They left the baby with a maiden lady while they went out fishing. The entire family was drowned and she - the Norwegian maiden lady - raised the boy as her own. Later, she came to the U.S., still claiming the little boy as her son. This little boy was my grandfather. (Only recently, I learned that my grandfather was an illegitimate child, which would lend credence to Uncle Arthur's story.) Thus, the Carney name disappeared and the name Ellingboe appeared.

Uncle Arthur always admired the Irish, and, of course, Scandinavians were looked down upon at this point in our history, as were many immigrants. However, Uncle Arthur was very proud of his family and it is almost impossible for me to reconcile this pride in family, with a repudiation of his family name unless he was certain of the truth of the story. I know Uncle Arthur believed the story though I'm almost as certain no one else did, or does. His documentation, including a family Bible, was burned in a fire in the locker room of the prison so there is no proof of his claim to Irish ancestry.

It is true that my Mother looked Irish; white skin, black hair, bright blue eyes! Who knows? I don't think Mother believed this story, but she didn't actually say she disbelieved it, either. We cannot square such a "fairy tale" though, with what we know of Uncle Arthur's character, so.......As I said, draw your own conclusions!

As of April of 1930, at the time of the 1930 census, 16 year-old Harold R. Johnson was lodging with the Albert Ellingboes, apparently to attend school.

In the 1940 census, he and his family farmed in New Market Twp and lived in the same house that they had lived in in 1935. Albert had a fifth-grade education, Annie had an eighth-grade education.

Obituary of A. O. Ellingboe

Albert Olaus Ellingboe of Lakeville Route 2, died January 9, 1948, at Sanford Hospital from a heart attack. His death occurred the day following his brother Ole’s funeral. Both were taken to Sanford hospital by ambulance January 3, and both lived in New Market township, just a quarter mile apart.

Funeral services for Albert Ellingboe were held at the West Christiania Lutheran church, January 12, at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. E. E. Hoff officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Three hymns were sung: “Built On A Rock”, by Evelyn Ellingboe; “Nearer My God to Thee” and “Behold A Host” sung by Evelyn Ellingboe and Veola Soberg.

Pallbearers were six nephews, Oscar Ellingboe, Edwin Ellingboe, Arthur Ellingboe, Floyd Tonsager, Alvin Tonsager, Francis Tonsager.

The deceased was born March 28, 1885, a son of Ove and Berit (Helle) Ellingboe, on a farm in New Market township, the same farm on which he spent his entire life time. He attended the Scott county school Dist. 66 and then he took a short commercial course at a business college in Northfield. He was engaged in farming through out his life.

He was united in marriage with Anne Bergstrom of Nekoma, N.D., June 21, 1922, at Kenyon, Minn.

Albert Ellingboe is survived by his wife, three daughters, and one son, Alta Ann (Mrs. Samuel Mahnken), Dorothy and Hazel Ellingboe, and Albert Ellingboe, Jr. He is survived by one brother, Arthur of Leavenworth, Kansas; five sisters, Mary Lee of Omak, Wash.; Thea Tonsager of Lakeville, Anna Selmo of Solway, Minn.; Clara Liggett and Olga Ellingboe of Waseca.

Mr. Ellingboe was left with the responsibility of the farm at an early age, when his father died. {illegible} had the care of his mother and younger sisters. He was a faithful and sincere church member of the West Christiania Lutheran Church during his life. Mr. Ellingboe was well-known and highly respected in the community in which he always lived. He was chairman of School Dist. 66 board for 23 years and a church trustee for one year. He was a kind and loving husband and father.

Among the out of town attendants at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Al Liggitt of Waseca; Arthur Carney of Leavenworth, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Campion of Minneapolis; Ed Ellingboe of Minneapolis; Charles Tanger, Mankato; Willard Espelund, Winnebago; Mrs. Tony Sciano of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Mahnken of Minneapolis; Dorothy Ellingboe, New York City; Hazel Ellingboe of Mankato Teachers College.

In the 1930 census, Olga was indeed living with her sister Clara Leggett and family at 604 5th St. in Waseca.

In the 1940 census, she was living with the Liggetts in Waseca.

According to her death certificate, she had lived in Waseca for 26 years. Her address was 7th Avenue, SW. Olga died from a cerebral hemorrhage. She also had severe rheumatoid arthritis.

If Olga had lived with Clara for 26 years, she had gone to live with her shortly after their mother died. This suggests that Olga, although only about 40 years old, may not have been able to live on her own.

In the 1930 census, he lives in New Market with his son Oscar. They are listed on the census form just after the Ole Ellingboe family. Ole is shown as a widower.

The 1891 Norwegian census shows the 9 year-old Anders as, apparently, the child of Anders Haaversen and Berith Knudsdatter. Others on that farm are Mareth Andersdatter, 69, and Knud Johannessen, 60, apparently serving as foderaads.

His obit calls him Andrew Anderson Holien, age 85. He had been a farmer in the Wrencoe area west of Sandpoint for 30 years before moving to Spokane in 1946. His obit said that he was an uncle of Henry Holien, Sandpoint, and Mrs. Bertha Heaton of Spokane. Andrew had been on the board of directors of the initial REA utility in the area as well as the board of the local gas coop.

T. Gerhard Haugen, 86, of Northfield died Thursday, July 11, 1991 at the Three Links Care Center. Haugen was born Dec. 15, 1904 to Christopher and Mareth (Lykken) Haugen in Dennison. He attended rural Dennison Public Schools and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1925. On March 21, 1964 he married Bertha Soine in Dennison. The couple lived in Dennison, Cannon Falls and Northfield. He was employed by Goodhue County Dairy Herd Improvement Association from 1939 to 1941. In 1941 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He re-enlisted in 1945 and was sent ot China where he was critically injured and received a medical discharge in 1947. When he returned he was employed by Dakota County Dairy Herd Improvement Association until 1953, then worked as a custodian at Boe Chapel at St. Olaf College until his retirement. Haugen was a member of Vang Lutheran Church in rural Dennison. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and a sister. Survivors include a stepson Richard Soine of Phoenix, Ariz.; a stepdaughter Carol (and John) Beckman of Cannon Falls; two stepgrandchildren; a sister Gertrude Underdahl of Kenyon; a nephew Pete Underdahl of Dennison; and several cousins. Visitation was held Friday, July 12 at the Benson Funeral Home in Northfield. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 13 at Vang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gerald Gengenbach officaiting. Music was provided by organist Helen Midje. Pallbearers were Bernard and Arnold Ellingboe, Herb and Donald Haugen, and Dale and Pete Underdahl. Interment was at Vang Lutheran Cemetery.

In the 1920 census, a 23 year-old Harry O. Lee is listed as a “Lodger”, apparently with the family of Charles Johnson, in the Omak precinct of Okanogan County, Washington. Harry is listed as a wage-earning “farmer” on a “fruit farm.” He is shown as being born in Minnesota, as was his father, and his mother is shown as being born in Norway.

Harry lived almost next door to his brother Floyd at the time of the 1930 census.

Harry O. Lee and his family lived at 118 North 2nd Avenue W. in Omak, Okanogan County, Washington, at the time of the 1930 census in April of 1930. Harry owned his home, worth $2500. The household did not have a radio. The household: Harry O., 33 (married at age 29, born in N. Dakota but his father is shown as born in Wisconsin (?)), his wife Gladys E., 23 (married at 19, born in Washington but her father born in Tennessee and her mother in Oregon), their son, Burton O., age 2 and 9 months, born in Washington. Harry is an assistant clerk in the post office, he is employed, and he is a veteran, having fought in the World War.

In the 1940 census, he and his family live in Omak at a house they own worth $2500. This was the same house that they all lived in in 1935. Harry and Gladys were both high school graduates. Harry was a postal clerk for the Post Office.

Harry registered for the World War II draft in 1942. At that time, he was living in Omak, Washington, and working for the post office. He gave his brother Floyd as the “person who will always know your address.”

Floyd lived almost next door to his brother Harry at the time of the 1930 census.

At the time of the 1930 census in April, Floyd and his family were living at 110 North 2nd Avenue, W., in Omak, Okanogan County, Washington in a house they owned. The house was worth $4000 and the household did not have a radio. The household consisted of Floyd M., 31 (first married at 25 and born in Wisconsin as was his father), his wife, Zella A., 31 (first married at 25 and born in Washington although her father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Oregon), their son Floyd E., 4 and 5 mos., born in Washington, and their daughter Betty Ann, 2 and 3 mos., born in Washington. Floyd is an insurance agent, he is employed, and he is not a veteran.

In the 1940 census, he and his family live on 2nd Avenue North in Omak in a house that they own, the same house that they all lived in in 1935. Floyd is a salesman for a publishing company and his wife is a printer for a publishing company. Floyd is a high school graduate, Zella has had two years of college.

In the 1950 census, he and Zella and David live in Omak. He is circulation manager for the “town paper.” Zella runs the printing press for the “town paper.”

He is not included in the Washington death index and he is not included in the SSDI.

Floyd served as a police judge and a justice of the peace in Omak. He moved to Issaquah, near Seattle, in 1958. While in Omak, he headed the circulation staff of the weekly Omak Chronicle.

According to the obit in Spokane newspaper: “Surviving him are his wife, Zella Lee, at the home in Issaquah; two sons, Floyd Jr., San Diego, and David Lee, Spokane; one daughter, Mrs. George Charlton, Ellensburg; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Harry and Ivan Lee, Omak; two sisters, Mrs. William Sprowl, Omak, and Mrs. Cecil Holmes, Oroville.”

Lillian Lee and Willis Link Go Beyond Depth

OKANOGAN, Wash., July 2, — Lillian Lee, 19, and Willis Link, 23, drowned this evening at Shellrock point in the Okanogan river, midway between Okanogan and Omak. They were members of a swimming party given by the Christian Endeavor as a farewell to Miss Mabel Simmons and Miss Mabel Haley. They stepped from shallow water into deep water and neither could swim. Several of the party had swam across the river and were unable to return before the two sank. After dragging and diving with searchlights for more than two hours the girl’s body was recovered. Miss Lee was the daughter of E.H. Lee. W.D. Link is the boy’s father. Both sets of parents are orchardists living near Omak.

Couldn’t find her in the 1930 census. There was an Annie Lee, schoolteacher, of about the right age living in Okanogan County at that time but her place of birth, as well as the places of birth of her parents, were all wrong.

Annie Irene Lee Holmes, 90, of Tonasket, died on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999 at the North Valley Nursing Home in Tonasket.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1908 in Superior, WI to parents, Elling and Mary Lee.

When Annie was a child, her family moved west to an orchard near Omak. Five years later, they moved into town. There Annie attended school, graduating from the Omak High School in 1925. She then attended and graduated from the Cheney Normal School with a teacher's certificate. Schools she later taught in included Foster, Tonasket, Wauconda, Riverside, Methow, Manson and the Chewiliken Valley. On Aug. 27, 1933, she married Cecil Holmes in Omak. Following their retirement, they moved near Oroville and lived there until 1990 when they moved to an apartment in Tonasket.

Her husband, Cecil, preceded her in death in 1991.

Due to ill health, Annie's last years have been spent in the North Valley Nursing Home in Tonasket.

Annie had an enormous capacity for the love of children.

She was a charter member of the Tonasket Free Methodist Church and also a member of the Retired Teachers Assoc.

Annie is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marjorie, four brothers and two sisters.

Services will be Friday, Aug. 6, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Tonasket Free Methodist Church with Fred Boyd officiating. Burial will be in the Tonasket Cemetery.

Seems to have gone by the name Oliver, at least at the time he graduated from high school in 1930. A commemorative plaque apparently given to each of the nine graduates shows “E. Oliver Ellingboe.”

He is listed twice in the 1930 census: at home with his parents and as a farm laborer lodging with the Raymond Hussong family on their farm in Alba Twp, Jackson County, Minnesota.

In the 1940 census, he is living at home in New Market with his parents and siblings. He was a high school graduate and was employed as a mechanic.

Registered for the draft in Shakopee on 16 Oct 1940. He claimed to be self-employed and living with his parents at 2 Lakeville in New Market. The registration card shows that he was inducted on May 4, 1941.

From a write-up of “Old Timer” W.O. Edwin O. Ellingboe in the North Star Guardian, sometime in 1961:

It was May, 1941, when WO Edwin O. “Ellie” Ellingboe, ABRON’s Motor Vehicle Maintenance Officer, volunteered for the draft. Just after Pearl Harbor, he joined the 109th at Esler Field, Louisiana, and went overseas to southern England where he spent 22 months in training.

June 1944 marks the invasion of Europe. The 109th crossed the channel to France during the night in Liberty ships. From Ellie’s ship, trucks were unloaded onto barges to make the landing. Ellie boarded the last barge where he discovered he was the ranking NCOIC. He recalls, “While we were in the channel, both the outboard motors on our barge quit and we started drifting. To make matters worse, we were under attack from German aircraft. Finally, we got the motors started and made our landing. I waited for the last truck to be unloaded. By that time, we were separated from the rest of our squadron so we bunked under the truck until morning when we joined the rest of our outfit.”

At first, Ellie and his men were located at a front line air strip near St. Lo (No. A-9 for the benefit of the other Old-Timers). From there, he continued to move through France with the 109th. “I’ll never forget my first morning in Versailles. I woke up to find a dead Jerry lying almost beside me,” remembers Ellie.

Next came Paris, then a move to Gosselies, Belgium {a part of the Belgian town of Charleroi} - about 35 miles from the Battle of the Bulge. During the winter of 1944, his outfit was on the receiving end of several German bombing raids, including a few attacks by V-1s.

“One evening,” remembers Ellie, “three crippled bombers with full bomb loads landed at our base and skidded into a stockpile of petroleum drums. The crew members got out O.K. but the resulting fire set off all the bombs. That was the best Fourth of July celebration I’ve ever seen.”

The 109th was at Eschwagen, Germany, when the war ended. German aircraft literally poured into the field to surrender rather than land at Russian-held bases.

Next, the 109th was re-assigned to the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. But all those who had sufficient service time (including Ellie) were transferred to non-combat organizations. Ellie spent a short time with the 155th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, then reassigned to the States where he was discharged at Camp McCoy in March, 1947. Ellie joined the Guard as an Air Technician.

South Minneapolis residents, Ellie and his wife, Ann, have two daughters, 10 and 7. Fishing and reading are Ellie’s pastimes.

Assigned to inactive reserve in October of 1941. Recalled to active duty January 28th, 1942 (entered active duty in April). Unit renamed 109th Tactical Reconnaisance Squadron and was in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Germany, as part of the Ninth Air Force, until October, 1945.

He arrived back in New York aboard the Queen Mary on September 28, 1945, as a SSgt in the Army Air Corps. The personnel roster shows that the group was destined for Reception Station No. 16 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was was Edwin O Ellingboe, auto repairman, National Guard Air Base in St. Paul. He resided at 3011 32nd Avenue S. That was his address at the time of his marriage to Anna.

In the 1950 St. Paul city directory, he was Edwin O, auto repair, National Guard Air Base. He resided in Minneapolis.

In the 1950 census, mistakenly called Edward, he and Anna lived at 2436 11th Avenue in south Minneapolis in the “rear” apartment. Edwin was a mechanic for “air service.”

Height 5' 4.5", Weight 135 lbs.

Died of heart disease at the age of 58. First heart attack at age 51 in February of 1962.

Arthur Raymond Ellingboe was born in Scott County, Minnesota, on August 2, 1912, to Ole and Rose (Thompson) Ellingboe. He was raised on his parents’ farm and attended the nearby country school.

On June 17, 1936, he was united in marriage to Margaret Oline Klefstad. They farmed together in Scott County until 1941 when they bought and ran their own farm in Dakota County, north of Northfield, until 1948. Arthur and Margaret then moved to Northfield and later, in 1952, to their longtime home in Waterford where they raised their two sons. Arthur began working at Dr. Garlie’s Veterinary Clinic as Office Manager and Vet Assistant, retiring in 1977. Not one to stay idle, he then worked at the Northrup King Research Station in Stanton for the next ten years.

Arthur was involved as a volunteer with the Civil Defense Organization in the area and a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. He and Margaret spent a number of winters in Arizona, largely in Apache Junction. In 1995, they moved to Parkview Manor in Northfield.

Arthur died on Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Abbot Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 90.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret, sons Richard (Debera) of Eugene, Oregon, and John (Catherine Cella) of Edina, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sisters Beulah (Lloyd) Luckman of Northfield, Minnesota, Helen Henry of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Evelyn (Gaylord) Horwath of Faribault, Minnesota, brother-in-law John Menne, sisters-in-law Anna and Veola Ellingboe, and many other relatives and friends.

In the Northfield city directory, Art shows up in 1950 and 1953. In 1950, his address is shown as 1112 Union Street and his occupation as “Bookkeeper, Adolph O. Garlie.” In 1953, there is a similar entry for that address (including “sp. Margaret”) but there is also one for 1109 Winona Street in which Art is listed as “Asst., Adolph O. Garlie.” Apparently the veterinarian that Art worked for was Adolph O. Garlie (#15744) until 1965 but by 1967 that vet is David A. Garlie.

On June 17, 1936, she was united in marriage with Lloyd Winfield Luckman at Christiania Lutheran Church. After marriage they farmed in the Lakeville and Crystal Lake areas and then near Castle Rock. In 1960, they moved to Northfield and Beulah worked as a nurses aid. From the mid 1960's until the late 1970's she worked in food service at St. Olaf College. Lloyd passed away December 27, 2006. Beulah was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she had been active in Circle, Ladies Aid, as a Sunday School teacher, and helping serve at funerals. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing. She was a kind, good hearted Christian, and she loved her family dearly.

Survivors include 4 children: Carol Brenner of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Edwin and wife Rev. Peggy of Tillamook, Oregon, Sharon Ann Satre of St. Paul, Charles of Northfield; her daughter-in-law, Sylvia Luckman of Faribault; 13 grandchildren: Darla (Alex) Hanson, Steven Luckman, Susan (Ed) Narewski, Donna (Ed) Gensemer, James Brenner, Brandon (Julie) Luckman, Michael and Joseph Satre, William, Ryan, Genevie, Bridget and Cheyenne Luckman; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn and husband Gaylord Horwath of Faribault; her sister-in-law, Jeanette Severson of Roseville; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Lloyd; her son, Kenneth; her parents; 3 brothers: Edwin, Art and Oscar Ellingboe; and 3 sisters: Helen Henry, Ruby Linderholm and Jeanette Menne.

Beulah passed away Saturday evening, October 11, 2008, at the Northfield Hospital at the age of 93.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, October 16, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield with Rev. Mark Johnson officiating. Music will provided by Randy Ellingboe and Alexandra Smith.  Interment will be in Northfield Cemetery. Casket bearers will be James Brenner, Edwin, Charles, Brandon, Steve, William and Ryan Luckman, Michael and Joseph Satre. Visitation will be 5-7PM Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue on Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service.

Beulah had 14 grandchildren, not 13.

Florence Viola Sandmann (Tonsager) passed away peacefully at home in Webster on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the age of 101. Florence was born May 31, 1915 to George and Thea (neé Ellingboe) Tonsager in New Market Township. She was baptized and confirmed at West Christiania Church. Her sister, Gladys played the guitar and sang together many times at church. She attended school at Scott County District 65 Country School through the 8th grade, earning two perfect attendance records. She was united in marriage to Ira Sandmann on June 5, 1935. They adopted their 3 children while they farmed near Webster. They farmed for many years before moving into Webster Township in 1978. Ira passed away in December of 1988.

Florence loved to work in her garden, tending to her vegetable and many flower varieties. She was also very active and enjoyed playing cards weekly at the local senior centers. She was a member of St. Johns Church for 81 years. She was active in her church with the Ladies Aid to when changed to the LWML. She loved to crochet and do word searches. Her life was filled with love, spending as much time as possible with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and taught them of the love of fishing. Her favorite color was red.

Florence is survived by her children, Betty Nelson of Webster, Jerry (Richard Kelley) of Golden Valley and Larry (Roxanna) of South Range, WI. She is also survived by her grandchildren, James (Tira) Nelson, Timothy Nelson, Kimberly Nelson, Kristine (Jene) Lattimore; great grandchildren, Jason Nelson, Sarah (Jim) McKinnon, Carrie (Chris) Jeno, Nicholas Nelson, Kayla Vohnoutka and great-great grandchildren, Ashton Hortenbach, Avery Jeno and Lily Nelson; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Tonsager (Francis), and Marcelline Tonsager (Bud); many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Dorothy Bernice Olson, 94, of Lakeville, Minnesota, passed away on November 8, 2019.

Dorothy was born on the family farm near Lakeville, Minnesota, on October 9, 1925, the second daughter of the late Albert and Anne Ellingboe. She attended a one-room rural school for grades 1-8 and graduated from Lakeville, Minnesota, high school in 1942. She then attended Mankato State Teachers’ College, taking breaks from college to teach in two rural schools (Minnesota and Montana) and a year in New York City working on Wall Street. After completing her Master’s degree in Education and Music at Mankato State College she taught K-12 music in Comfrey, Minnesota.

In 1960 she married Herman Olson and they settled in St. Cloud, Minnesota. She started teaching English at St. Cloud Technical High School where for over 20 years she was known for her dynamic teaching until her retirement in 1988. 

Dorothy moved to Richmond, Minnesota, in 1992 after building her dream home on an island in the Sauk River chain of lakes. Dorothy loved music, literature and travel. She was an accomplished vocalist. From an early age she was known for her wonderful soprano voice. Her recitations of poetry and prose were spell-binding. 

In retirement she remained active in the Sons of Norway, the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gama honor society, church choir, and the Whitney Senior Center in St. Cloud. Her last years were spent in senior assisted living in Cold Spring, Minnesota, and Lakeville, Minnesota.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Anne Ellingboe, sister Alta Mahnken, and her husband Herman Olson. She is survived by a sister Hazel (Charles) Tanger of Weston, Wisconsin, and a brother Albert (Ann) Ellingboe of Madison, Wisconsin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, November 14 at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, Minnesota, with visitation at 10:00 am prior to the service.  Interment will be at 10:00 am on Friday, November 15 at West Christiania Cemetery in Lakeville, Minnesota. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tri-County Humane Society, St. Cloud, Minnesota or Minnesota Hospice, Lakeville, Minnesota.

She was a school teacher in Ledger, Montana in 1945.

A house fire resulted in a total loss for a 91-year-old resident Monday morning, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.

Dorothy Olson of 18941 Fall Ridge Road, Richmond, was using a small kitchen appliance when the fire began just after 7:45 a.m. Nov. 21 [2016]. Olson got out of the house safely after the fire grew too quickly to extinguish on her own; she was later transported to St. Cloud Hospital for precautionary reasons.

The Chain of Lakes Fire Department arrived on the scene and requested mutual aid from Richmond and Cold Spring Fire Departments. The Stearns County Sheriff's Office, Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department, Xcel Energy and Stearns County Highway Department also assisted at the scene.

The house is believed to be a total loss, according to the sheriff's office. The fire is under investigation.

The youngest child of Albert Olaus Ellingboe and Anne Bergstrom Ellingboe, Al was born at home on the family farm in Lakeville, MN. Al attended Lakeville High School, Mankato State University, and the University of Minnesota, where he received bachelor and doctoral degrees in Plant Pathology. He was a member of the U Minnesota Chapter of the Farmhouse Fraternity. He often expressed his deep appreciation for U Minnesota and Farmhouse for their support of his education.

Al met and married his wife and life-long partner, Ann Elizabeth Rogers, while at the University of Minnesota. He completed a post-doctoral Fellowship at Harvard University and joined the faculty at Michigan State University (MSU) in 1960 with his growing family. Daughter, Lori, was born in Cambridge, MA, while daughter, Leah, and sons, Albert "Bert" and Brian, were born in East Lansing, MI. Al and Ann were married for 65 years.

In 1980, the family moved to San Carlos, CA, where he joined the International Plant Research Institute (IPRI) as Head of the Plant Pathology Group. In 1983, he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, as a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology with a joint appointment in the Department of Genetics. Al was an international recognized authority on the genetics of host-pathogen interactions. His research focused primarily on fungal pathogens of cereal grains including barley, wheat, corn, and rice. Later in his career he established a breeding program to select for natural resistance to blight disease of Chestnut. He was frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings where he, his students, and his postdoctoral fellows presented the results of their research. He was a caring mentor for numerous students and post-doctoral fellows, many of whom have remained in contact with him and Ann.

He received several prestigious academic honors during his career. Most notably, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) in 1978, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Plant Pathology (U Minnesota) in 2003, and he was honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Agricultural Sciences and Technologies from the University of Naples, Italy, in 1995. He was the Director of Research for the American Chestnut Foundation for many years, and he and family planted numerous Chestnut trees at their Dodgeville "tree farm." Al traveled and worked on six different continents (alas, not Antarctica!) with his students and collaborators. He was a member of the local Ygdrasil Literary Society.

Al was a proud and loyal family man. The family enjoyed camping every summer (often at the location of the APS meeting) and Christmas trips to Minnesota most years to visit the Ellingboe and Rogers families.

Al's hobbies were his tractors and old cars at the Dodgeville farm, especially his 1933 B-Farmall tractor that he brought over from the family farm in Lakeville. He loved giving tractor rides and sleigh rides on the farm to his children and grandchildren - all of whom he taught to drive a tractor. He enjoyed canoeing in the Boundary Waters with family, Boy Scouts, and former colleagues from his MSU days. Al was always ready to go driving on a road trip. He spent many happy hours perusing maps and atlases of the U.S. and Australia. He often preferred "the road less traveled."

Al is preceded in death by his parents; and sisters: Alta Mahnken and Dorothy Olson. Al is survived by his wife Ann; his children: Lori, Leah (Jim), Bert (Sue), and Brian (Errin); his sister, Hazel Tanger; and grandchildren: Haakon, Vitya, Christine, Emily, Lachlan, Zoe, and Finn.

His funeral service was held April 19th at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Madison.

Betty Carol Leggett Lieder formerly of Rochester, Minnesota, died on Friday, January 13th 2023 at her new residence in Iowa City. She was 98 years old. She had lost her spouse of 78 years and her soulmate 5 weeks earlier. She died of old age and a broken heart syndrome. Surrounded by family, she took her last breath 74 years to the day from when her oldest son was born.

Betty was born in Northfield, Minnesota on April 23, 1924 as the beloved daughter of Alvin and Clara Leggett. She grew up in Waseca, Minnesota and graduated with Salutatorian honors in 1942. She met her husband, Lyle while attending St. Olaf College in Northfield. They were married in 1944 and moved to Boston where they attended Boston University while serving two Methodist Churches in New Hampshire. In 1946, they worked as summer missionaries in Mexico. Betty received her BA in Philosophy and Sociology from Boston University in 1948. Betty and Lyle served United Methodist Churches in Iowa and traveled extensively at home and abroad.

In 1980, Betty was named the National Mother of the Year–a richly deserved honor. Though living in many different houses throughout her life, she made each house a warm and inviting home. She was an accomplished pianist and had a beautiful, soaring soprano voice.

A master of memorizing poetry, it was not uncommon for her to break out in verse in the midst of a conversation! She read voraciously and broadly, remaining interested and interesting throughout her long life. She was a study in strength, compassion, warmth, steadiness and good, old common sense.

She was an inspiration to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle W. Lieder, parents, Alvin and Clara Leggett, eldest son, Mark Abernathy Lieder and sons-in love, Stephen K Smith and D Bradley Kiesey. She is survived by daughters Rebecca Lieder Smith and Deborah Lieder Kiesey of Iowa City, son and daughter-in-love David and Janet Lieder of Stewartville, Minnesota, daughter and son-in-love Rachel Lieder Simeon and Mark Haines Simeon of Harstine Island, Washington, 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any memorial donation be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

She will be interred with her husband at the Oakland cemetery in Iowa City.

He registered for the draft as Henry Richard Nelson in Scott County on June 5, 1917. He was of slender build (whether tall, medium, or short is not mentioned) with blue eyes, light brown hair, and weak eyes. He was a farm laborer for Alex Stennerson in New Market.

In the 1920 census, he may be the Henry Nelson who is rooming with the Elwood Harper household in Minneapolis. That Henry was a bookkeeper with a wood company.

In the 1940 census, he lives with or next door to the Albert Ellingboes. Henry is a farm laborer.

Evey says that Hank was a “middle-aged bachelor” who “stayed in the little house on Albert’s place.” Rose said that Hank’s house was “on the 20.”

It was Hank Nelson who, with his old pickup truck, drove several of the Ellingboes, including Albert Batten, to Lake Pepin on an overnight fishing trip in the summer of 1941.

Henry was a single farmer according to his death certificate. He resided at Lakeville, Route 1. He died of an intestinal obstruction brought on by cancer. The informant for his death certificate was his cousin Oscar Nelson of 848 East Rose Ave., St. Paul.

Pallbearers were Lars Holden, Fred Frederickson, Eddy Peterson, Carl Miller, Axel Frederickson and Carl Anderson. Olaf Bergstrom was born March 21, 1889 in the Webster community, son of Ole and Betsy Nelson Bergstrom. He attended the rural schools and engaged in farming in the Webster community. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters and four brothers. Survivors include his wife; two daughters Doris (Mrs. Ray) Cousins of Worihington and Marcella (Mrs. Gordon) Tripp of Saugus, Calif.; three sons Ronald of Elko, Loren of Chaska, and Duane of New Market; one sister Sophie Aronson of Lakeville; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Friday, May 26, at the White Funeral Home in Lakeville. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 27, at Christiania Lutheran Church with the Rev. Charles vonFischer officiating. Interment was in West Christiania Cemetery. Pallbearers were Debbie, Todd, Scott, Jeff and Mark Bergstrom, and Lori Cousins.

She was born in Minot, ND on October 2, 1915 to Thomas and Tilda (Holt) Haugen. She lived most of her life in Nerstrand, where she married Elmer J. Engeseth on December 11, 1937 and they spent many years farming. She moved to McHenry, Illinois, in July of 1989 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren.

She loved her church, reading, sewing, baking and spending time with her friends and family. Her kindness, patience and pace of life were exemplary and an inspiration to us all. Her use of adages such as "uff da!" "For Pete's Sake", "Ish" and "My Word" were endearing and reminded us of Minnesota farm life. Her wisdom and perspective were a blessing to us. She will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Joni (Dennis) Podgorski of Ringwood, IL; grandsons, Jeffrey (Diane) Flicek and Jay (Susan) Flicek of McHenry, IL; her great-grandchildren, Frank (Jennifer) Frantz of Wonder Lake, IL, Blake Frantz of Seattle, WA, Kristin (Mark) Leiker of New Port Richey, FL, Alan (Jordon) Flicek of Normal, IL, Jeffrey Flicek, Thomas Flicek, Robert Flicek and Kelsey Flicek of McHenry, IL; her great-great-grandchildren, Frank III, Kaylee, Kristen and Quinn Frantz of Wonder Lake, IL, Owen Leiker of New Port Richey, FL and Code Podgorski of Oak Park, IL; her brother, Donald (Marilyn) Haugen of Dennison; a sister, LouAnn (James) Lervik of Northfield; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Hazel Dammer, age 87, of Northfield, died on Monday, February 02, 2009 at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Saturday, February 7th at the Dennison Lutheran Church in Dennison with the Reverend Terje Hausken officiating with burial at the Valley Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday at the Church 1 hour prior to Services.

Hazel Irene Dammer was born December 13, 1921 in Kenyon, MN, daughter of Thomas and Tilda (Holt) Haugen. She was raised with her family on various farms in the Kenyon and Dennison area and was baptized and confirmed at the Vang Lutheran Church. She attended country school and then was a housekeeper at private homes for a few years. On January 26, 1945 she was united in marriage to Elsworth Edward Dammer at the Dennison Lutheran Church in Dennison. They made their first home in Dennison and moved to Northfield in the early 1950's.

Shortly after moving to Northfield, Elsworth was killed in an auto accident leaving Hazel a widow raising their 2 children. She remained at home until Kathy and Tom were in Senior High School and then began working in housekeeping at the Odd Fellows Home (now Three Links Care Center) and later at the Northfield Care Center. She retired in 1983 at the age of 62 while working at the Northfield Hospital. Hazel was an excellent baker and cook, enjoyed reading and needle work, loved her grandchildren and cats, and enjoyed all types of music.

Hazel Dammer is survived by daughter Kathleen Schwartz of Northfield; son Thomas (Sharon) Dammer of Almena, WI; sisters Valdine Engeseth of McHenry, IL, Norma Iverson of Wanamingo, LouAnn (James) Lervick of Northfield,; brother Donald (Marilyn) Haugen of Dennison; 3 sisters-in-law, Beverly Haugen of Zumbrota, Edna (George) Brewer of Saginaw, MN and Emmie (Herb) Dammer of Cottage Grove, MN; 2 brothers-in-law, Ed (Dorothy) Dammer of Northfield and Karl Dammer of Saginaw, MN;

7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elsworth; her parents; sister, Meredith Lien and 2 brothers, Herbert and Russell Haugen.

Harvey was the third of seven children born to William and Ella Frances (Lee) Sprowl on November 20, 1925 in Omak, Wash. Harvey graduated from Omak High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy on September 13, 1943 and served with the Marines as a Medical Corpman and was honorable discharged on April 21, 1946. He then worked in construction for many years.

On February 3, 1951 Harvey and Donna Joan Rumburg of Bridgeport, Wash. were married in Omak, Wash. where they made their home. They had six children, William currently of Northport, Wash., Jim currently of Alvin, Texas, Scott and Harvey currently of Omak, Wash., Craig (Angie) currently of Webster, Texas, and Heather (Brent) Johnson currently of Benbrook, Texas. Harvey also had three grandchildren, Kara Sprowl of Silverdale, Wash. and Stuart and Kailey Johnson of Benbrook, Texas.

Harvey is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna Sprowl; his children; grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Johns of Lewiston, Idaho and Ruth (Ed) Piper of Dryden, Wash.; brothers-in-law, Darrell Carlton of Omak, Wash. and E.J. Schmidt of Omak, Wash.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Lou Schmidt, 78, a lifelong resident of Omak, went to be with the Lord Friday, July 8, 2005, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee following a brief illness. She was surrounded by family.

She was born to Bill and Ella Sprowl March 18, 1927. She was the fourth of seven children. Mary Lou graduated from Omak High School in 1945 and attended Central Washington College for one year.

She married E.J. Schmidt Sept. 4, 1948, at the Omak Presbyterian Church.

She worked at the Jim Hill Hotel, Omak Chronicle and Cooperative Growers/Magi for many years besides working in the home and orchard.

Mary Lou loved to sing. She was in choir music in high school, college choirs; church; community choirs and choral groups. In recent years, in fact, they couldn't come home from Arizona until the Choraliers concerts were over. Mom loved to garden, raising beautiful flowers as well as a vegetable garden.

She is survived by her husband, E.J., of the home; sons, Keith and his wife Heidi Schmidt and Chris and wife Tina Schmidt; daughter, Lisa and her husband Jeff Demmitt; all of the Omak area; daughter-in-law Patti and her husband Steve Cockfield of Malott; grandchildren, Eric Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Melissa Schmidt-Cockfield, Karl Schmidt, Justin Demmitt and Michelle Demmitt of the surrounding area; sisters, Margaret Johns of Okanogan, Ruthella and her husband, Ed Piper of Dryden; and brother, Harvey and his wife Donna Sprowl of Omak.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Mark; infant sons, Kirk and Allen; sisters, Della Mae Haeberle, Dorothy Carlton and brother, Herbert Sprowl.

She was a member of the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship and a past member of the Ora Yarwood, Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Country Club.

Memorial services for Mary Lou Schmidt will be held on Wednesday, July 13 at 1 p.m. at the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship. Memorials may be given to the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship or to the Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild.

Dorothy was born Jan. 22, 1933, in Omak to Bill and Ella Sprowl. She was from a pioneer family in Omak. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Sprowl homesteaded on Pogue Flat in 1900. She graduated from Omak High School in 1951, where she was "Princess Omak" in the Apple Blossom Festival.

Dorothy married Darrell Carlton on July 21, 1951, in Couer d'Alene, ID.

She was a beautiful, loving woman and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. We will all miss her more than words can express.

Bonnie June Stapf (nee: Tonsager), age 84 of Farmington, MN and Davenport, FL passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on May 11th.

Bonnie was born June 4th, 1937 to Palmer and Velma Tonsager. She grew up in Farmington, MN, where she met and later would marry the love of her life, Myron. In their over 61 years of marriage, they built a home, raised three children, and built a company where she was a real estate broker. In their retirement years, they spent most winters in Florida with good friends, enjoyed their social club, traveling around the world and golf outings.

Bonnie loved to cook. There wasn't a recipe or kitchen gadget she didn't have. She was a gracious and frequent hostess, throwing great parties and warm family gatherings. She was a die-hard Vikings fan - usually. She was vibrant and fearless, and she loved to laugh and spend time with her people. After a debilitating stroke five years ago, her only complaint was that she could no longer go dancing.

Bonnie is survived by her beloved husband Myron, daughters Lisa Thostenson (Mark), Stacy Fleming (Brian) and son Darin Stapf, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and her special dog MeToo and cat Sammie. A Celebration of Life will be held open house style at Celt's Pub in Farmington on Thursday July 7th from 4-7pm. Feel free to wear purple, orange or green, and bring stories or photos to share. In lieu of flowers, Memorials can be made to the family. A scholarship to St. Paul College Culinary Arts cooking school is planned.

Otte, Marguerite Ellen "Margo" died peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Richmond, Texas, on October 30th at the age of 80. Margo was born and raised in Farmington, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelors Degree in Education. She received her Masters from the University of Minnesota Mankato. She met her lifelong love, Darrell, in high school and they were married for almost 60 years. Margo taught at Farmington Elementary School for more than 30 years and touched many lives with her passion for teaching. Margo enjoyed golfing, dancing, reading, playing cards and growing her beautiful flowers which she shared with her family and friends. After retiring, they enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona and Texas and summers at the lake in Wisconsin. Her and Darrell also greatly enjoyed attending and cheering for their grandchildren at all their sporting events. Margo is preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Velma Tonsager and by son Douglas. She is survived by her husband, Darrell and children; Doneen Viall, David and Melissa Otte, Barb and Adam Borrowman. Margo was a wonderful grandma and great-grandma to Kylynn, Becca, Nick, Logan, Keegan, Kendall, Mitchell, Cambell and Rily. She is also survived by sister Bonnie and her husband Myron Stapf and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be greatly missed. Bobby was Lester Tonsager's son, Robert Lester Tonsager, born in November, 1931.

In the 1940 census, Robert lived with his grandparents, George and Thea Tonsager, and apparently had lived with them five years earlier.

Bobby died at age 22 in September of 1954. Lester's young wife (?) Alice died in at age 18 in 1933 so she apparently had Bobby at 16. Lester remarried and died in 1945 at the age of 36. Bobby was apparently associated in some way with the Minnesota Air National Guard. Bobby is buried either with or near Thea and George in West Christiania Cemetery where both of his parents are also buried.

Burial record or gravestone show that Robert Lester was a member of the Minnesota A1C 514 Air Defense Group. Record also says “raised by George and Thea Ellingboe Tonsager.”

A newspaper account of Robert’s death said that he lived at 1820 W. 90th Street in Bloomington and was killed after his car left county road 56 near New Market village and went into a field. Tonsager’s body was found about 30 feet from the roadway. The road was straight where his northbound car apparently left it, traveled 60 feet into the field and then skidded back to the edge of the road. Officials guessed he might have been thrown from the car and then run over by it. Tonsager was dead on arrival at Lakeville hospital.



The death notice for Robert Tonsager appeared in the September 9, 1954, editions of the Shakopee Valley News (p. 1, column 3), and the New Prague Times (p. 6, column 6).

Laverne 'Vern' Tonsager 1940–2017 Circle Lake—Laverne "Vern" Tonsager, age 77 of Northfield, passed away surrounded by family on October 27th, at his home. Vern Darrell Tonsager was born July 19, 1940, in Northfield, Minnesota, to Ruby (Fredrickson) and Lester Tonsager. Vern was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was raised in Northfield and was a house painter for 55 years. Vern was an active parishioner and volunteer at Annunciation Church in Hazelwood, MN. Vern battled Leukemia for three years and Pancreatic Cancer for the last 18 months, facing the diagnosis with courage, and determination. Vern continued working until recently and deeply missed a hard day's work. He loved spending winters in Ft Myers and fishing on the ocean with his buddies and family. He spent three decades on Circle Lake where his hobbies were fishing and building houses. He cherished all of the time with his grandkids and great-grandkids more than anything else. Of South Range, Wisconsin, at the time of Florence’s death in April of 2017. His kidney cancer prevented him from attending her funeral.

Adopted by Florence and Ira when he was four years old.

Larry had had surgery for kidney cancer and apparently was recovering, but something went wrong. Larry had a wife. They had been married for about 5 years.

Sharon Mahnken, a member of the Roald Amundsen Lodge (Sons of Norway) in Sacramento, died in her sleep, while serving as the craft teacher at Camp Norge’s Language Camp this summer. Sharon was an expert wood carver and rosemaler. She will be missed by many. She was a Master Wood Carver and lived in Folsom.

The California Norwegian-American community recently mourned the loss of two of its most active members, with memorial services both held Sunday, August 2, in different parts of the state.

Sharon Mahnken, 60, died suddenly July 24 at Camp Norge in Alta, CA where she was completing the second week teaching crafts at Camp Trollfjell, the District Six Language and Heritage Camp. Sharon was a longtime member of Sons of Norway, Daughters of Norway and the RV Carvers.

She was a beloved aunt and woodworker extraordinaire, who gave a memorable demonstration of her craft for Edvard Grieg Lodge a few years ago.

She was a member of Roald Amundsen Lodge Sacramento No. 6-48. She had spent a month in Norway, returning just before camp started. On her trip to Norway, she had acquired a bunad, in which she was attired in her final rest in funeral services held Aug. 2 in Fair Oaks, CA with interment in San Mateo.

Memorial donations can be made to the Sons of Norway Recreation Center, Camp Norge in her name. There was no place that she loved so well as Camp Norge.

A Funeral Eulogy:

I met Sharon when I joined the Sons of Norway in 1980. She had joined in 1971, giving her 38 total years of membership. We were both single professional women, living in Folsom, with a deep love of kids, dogs, and handicrafts, and we formed a quick bond. We both loved the Norwegian Christmas, and worked together on lodge parties, dinners, and parades. She mademanyfriendsinanauxiliarygroupcalledViking Sisters, which helped with cooking and crafts. Sharon was Social Director for five years, opening and closing the lodge, and organizing many social events for members. She made the Norwegian costumes for the kids to wear in parades, and kept them in immaculate condition, along with the Norwegian flags. Over the years she helped with Lutefisk Dinners, Camellia Festivals, Vikingfests, and Scandinavian Festivals. She also found time for the Daughters of Norway group.

Sharon was a very passionate person. She loved her family; her nephew Steven lived with her for a while, and nephew Patrick’s family of P. J., Madyson, and Austin had a very special place in her heart. She also enjoyed time with nephew Lance, his three year old daughter Kayla, and nephew Sam in Rohnert Park. The kids loved spending time with Aunt Sharon in Folsom and at Camp Norge in Alta. This was Sharon’s favoriteplaceonearth,andshewaspassionateabout improving the camp. She donated substantial funds for specific projects, and loved the rosemaling weekends at camp. She also loved to teach kids wood carving at the Troll Fjell language camp at Camp Norge, which is where she was when she died.

She was passionate about her handicrafts. She enjoyed rosemaling, or Norwegian rose painting, but her true love, found later in life, was wood carving. And she was so skilled in her carving, from the wooden rosemaling motifs to the wood- chipping in her Celtic crosses, which were my favorites. She traveled throughout the state donating her time to demon- strate wood carving for various groups, and she loved the carving weekends with the RV Carvers, serving as wagon master. When we sold the Sons of Norway lodge some years ago, our meeting night conflicted with the Woodcarvers. But she stayed active in Viking Sisters and Camp Norge.

Sharon and her aunt Dorothy shared a special bond, and loved to travel together. They had been to Norway several times, although their memories varied on what happened on the trips. They would squabble on a detail, and Dorothy would shake her head, that is just the way it was, and Sharon would roll her eyes and laugh. Sharon and Dorothy had just returned from a glorious trip on the Hurtigruten, or Norwegian Coastal Steamer, and a side trip to Inari, Finland. I want to remember Sharon standing on North Cape, happy to be in Norway, happy to be alive. She died too early, with many plans for the future, and much love of life.

Dr. Mark A. Lieder, well known Estes Park, Colo. realtor and classic car enthusiast, died peacefully Monday, June 23, 2003 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 13, 1949 to Lyle and Betty (Leggett) Lieder in Boston, Mass.

He graduated high school in Spencer, Iowa; received a Bachelor's of Arts degree from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa; and a Masters of Divinity, Doctorate of Ministry from the School of Theology in Claremont, Calif. He joined the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served United Methodist Churches in New Hartford, Fayette, Parkersburg, Woodward, and Iowa Falls, Iowa. He retired from professional ministry in 1995 and moved to Estes Park after having been a visitor for 30 years. He worked at Coldwell Banker Realty and was a founding member of the Estes Park Car Club. He was passionate about restoring vintage automobiles and collecting antiques. He loved hiking, rock climbing and enjoyed intellectual and physical challenges.

He is survived by his parents; his partner, Pam McCarthy and her daughter, Natalie Long, of Estes Park; a son, Chris Lieder, with the U.S. Air Force in Abilene, Texas; a daughter, Emily Lieder, of Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, David Lieder, of Stewartville, Minn.; sisters, Becky Smith of Iowa City, Iowa, Deb Kiesey of Vinton, Iowa, Rachel Lieder-Simeon of Eagle River, Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Friday, June 27, at the Community Church of the Rockies in Estes Park with the Rev. Mark Evans officiating.

Memorials sent to the family will go directly to the Cerro Gordo County Trails Committee in Mark's name as Mark was a very avid outdoorsman and concerned about the environment.

Howie was born in New Market, MN on November 18, 1936. He married the love of his life, Carol Thompson on March 3, 1956 and they were married 60+ years until her death on July 23, 2016.

ORLEN HARRY DAVIDSON, age 98, of Janesville died on Friday, June 10, 2022 at Whispering Creek in Janesville.

Born on October 17, 1923 near Elko in Scott County, Minnesota, he was the son of Adolph and Inga (Bergstrom) Davidson. Dave, as he was known since high school, served in the Navy until WWII ended. He married Lorraine Sammon on May 29, 1947 and began his business career in Faribault as manager of Wilson Co. of Chicago. When the plant closed, they moved to Owatonna where Dave began working for HyLine Poultry Farms, part of the large Pioneer Corn Corp. of Des Moines, IA. He quickly rose to management while he and Lorraine remodeled a farm, raised five children, and built an egg production business of their own. In 1966, Dave left HyLine and doubled production in his own business. He and Lorraine sold the business in 1976 and moved to Arizona for seven years before retiring in Janesville.

Dave had excellent organizational and problem-solving skills that he taught his children, contributing to their successes. Lorraine always said he could fix anything!

He is survived by his daughters, Joyce (Mark) Powell of Elysian, Gwen Davidson (Douglas Lubotsky) of Portland, OR, and Joan Davidson of Hollywood, FL and son, Gary (Debra) Davidson of Silver City, NM. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Courtney (Terry) Strean, Alec Powell, Landis Davidson, Larisa (Jonathan) Wilson, Kai Davidson, Tai Davidson, and Indigo Davidson; and five great grandchildren, Allie and Arya Strean, Rohan, Khaimus, and Tiden Wilson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Vincent John; one sister, Lillian Gladys Aronson; and one brother, Arthur Maynard Davidson.
