Anfinn married the eldest daughter of Knut Tasa, also an early settler of Decorah, Iowa. Anfinn settled as a neigbour to his father-in-law in the summer in 1855 in Holden Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. Then Anfinn sold his half of the farm in Iowa to his brother Christopher for $720.00 on April 21, 1856.

Andris og Marit hadde 4 barn. Den 10. januar 1888 solgte Andris 80 acres til hver av sønnen (Knut og Andris). Andris bodde på gården til han døde i 1910 og er begravet på en liten kirkegård som ligger på den opprinnelige delenen av farmen hans.

Han var "bel" i sitt eget bryllup, red rundt med en stokk med messingholk på. med den banket han på dørene, når folk kom ut og spurte hva han ville, svarte han; "E vil ha kjøt! Anfind Olsen var en av de tre mennene som møttes i prestegården i Vang 3. november 1837. De to andre var Ole Andersson Haalien og soknepresten Thomas Stang.

Dette møte er historisk. Det var nemlig det første kommunestyremøtet i Vang. Disse tre mennene hadde tidligere på høsten blitt valgt som "Formænd" for hvert sitt sokn, og da de satte seg rundt kontorbordet til presten denne høstdagen, var folkesty ret formelt innført i Vang.

Før de skiltes denne dagen, hadde de valgt soknepresten som den første ordføreren i kommunen, og Haalien gikk fra møtet med tittelen "Viceordfører".

Presten Stang var den eneste av disse tre som kunne skrive, den 17 linjer lange protokollen har Ole Haalien og Anfind Qvame undertegnet "med iholdt Pen".

Da Stang bare noen få måneder etter dette møtet flyttet til Hallingdal, ble Ole Haalien ordfører, og Anfinn ble valgt til bygdas tredje ordfører i 1839. Han satt som ordfører til 1841. Han kalles "Gamle Kvamin". Som halvbroren "Søynin" var han en meget god felespiller, Han lagde også feler selv. Han var også hjulmaker, men mest kjent er han for at han dreiv kvern og stampe i Eidsån. Han var dessuten den første som drev skyssstas jon på Kvame.

In the 1880 census he was Torstein (”Sorstein”) Flaten or Flaton, 31, living in Minneapolis (”Lower Levee”) with his wife Rangdi, 23, and their three daughters Bertha, 5, Margaret, 2, and Annie, 4 months (born in January). Torstein is a carpenter.

He is shown in the 1885 state census as T. N. Flaten, living in Minneapolis. The household is himself, 35, “Maude”, 30, Bertie, 10, Dorothea, 8, Nellie, 5, and Nels, 2.

The 1895 census showed that he had been in Minnesota for 26 years which would be consistent with him and Randi emigrating in 1869. Tosten was a dairyman and he and his family lived at 1604 East Lake Street. The household consisted of himself, 47, Randa, 40, Bertha, 20, Margarite, 18, Nellie, 15, Balder, 7, Nordie, 7, Walter, 5, and Mable, 2.

Ove måtte selge Kattevold 44/4 på auksjon i 1852. Dermed kom en ny slekt på gården. Det var Per Tørrisen Leine som kjøpte gården. Ove forsøkte å ta den tilbake på odel senere for å gi den til sønnen Trond, men saken ble hevet mot at han og sønne n Trond fikk bruke husmannsplassen Skraslebakken. Ove reiste med konen og sønnen Endre O Kattevold (1846- ) til USA i 1876. Sønnen Trond O Kattevold (1839- ) som brukte Skraslebakken reiste til USA i 1870. De hadde også Gjartrud O Kattevold (1845-) Øystein O Kattevold (1855). De hadde tre sønner som het Endre. De to eldste døde små, men dette viser hvor ivrige de var med å følge navnereglene i Vang.

Ove lånte en masse penger, minst 435 spd, bl.a. av brødrene Ivar og Torgeir T Eltun. De forlangte tvangsauksjon over gården og Andris F. Hamre fikk tilslaget den 1.4.1852 for 300 spd. Han solgte straks til Per Tørrisen Leine for det samme beløpet .

Ove reiste odelspåtale mot Per på vegne av sønnen Trond, men de inngikk forlig den 15.2.1856. Forliket gikk ut på at Ove trakk odelssaken mot at Trond fikk husmannsplassen Skraslebakken og at Ove og hans familie kunne bo hos Trond og overta plasse n dersom Trond døde eller reiste bort. Det siste var nok tatt med med tanke på Amerika feberen som raste over Valdres på den tiden. Det viste seg også å være riktig for Trond dro til USA i 1870, så faren overtok og drev plassen til han selv dro over i 1876.

Trond dro kanskje til Amerika for å slippe å ta ansvar for den sønnen han fikk med datteren til per tørrisen i 1869.

Det er nok han Bøye Skeie skriver om i "Gamalt frå Vang" side 60, som etter 30 år i Amerika skrev til slektninger i Vang: E skulde like um de sendte me ei flis taa dørahellun mino paa Helestrønd, ner so kunne felle, samma un flise ikkje var størr e ennn tobaksdaasen min". Det minner om ekte hjemlengsel.

Mrs. Ingeborg Haugen passed away February 2 on her farm two and a half miles west of Union Lake at the age of seventy-five years. Mrs. Haugen had been ill for several months, but had been able to be up and around until two weeks prior to her death. On the morning of February 2 she died suddenly from a heart attack.

She leaves to mourn her death six children, namely, Talmar Haugen at home, Gust Haugen on a neighboring farm, Knute Haugen, Northfield, Mrs. Paul Overby, Binford, N.D., Mrs. Albert Thorpe, Minneapolis. Two brothers, Christ Estrem, Petersburg, Neb., Andrew Estrem, Decorah, Iowa, and several grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Gilbert; an infant buried on the farm in Nebraska; Gustav Martinus born December 16, 1879, died March 5, 1893 buried at Closter, Nebraska; and Albert born November 9, 1885, died July 28, 1908 buried at Binford, North Dakota

Mary’s obit, as well as her gravestone, says she was born in 1869. That is incorrect.

Her obit said that she came to the U.S. at the age of 18. She and Willie and family moved to a ranch in Stanley County, South Dakota, south of Ft. Pierre, in 1906. They moved into town in 1936. Mary spent her last years in the Alleman Rest Home.

Surviving her are seven children, Goldie, Mrs. Ed Spencer, Ft. Pierre; Myrtle, Mrs. Walter Fackeiman, Ft. Pierre; Mrs. Laura Busch, Los Angeles; Orin and Stanley, Ft. Mabel died from typhoid fever which had produced internal hemorrhaging as well as pneumonia. She lived at 2311 E 32nd Street in Minneapolis and was employed as a “cutter.”

A different Mabel Flaten, a few years older and perhaps a cousin, married a Walter G Lee in Renville County on 11 Sept 1912.

Gilbert Tasa, 90, of Dennison passed away at Northfield City Hospital Tuesday, Sept. 5. He had been a resident of the Dilley Convalescent unit for some time. Mr. Tasa was an 1896 graduate of Luther College and farmed most of his life. He was never married. Funeral services will be held from the Vang Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8, with the Rev. John Fahning officiating. Interment will be at the Vang Cemetery. Survivors include on brother, Albert, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Albert Antoni Tasa, 85, of Dennison, were held Sept. 17 at the Vang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeno Weisz officiating. Interment took place at the Vang Cemetery. Christine Gunhus, accompanied by Mrs. Cyrus Midge, sang "Children Of The Heavenly Father." Pallbearers were Eric Odegaard, Lester Odegaard, Obert Musgjerd, George Langemo, Myron Heggedahl, and Robert Adamson. Albert Tasa was born on Feb. 6, 1886, to John and Ingeborg Bakken Tasa on their homestead in Holden Township. He was baptized on March 14, 1886, by the late Rev. J. N. Kildahl, and confirmed on Nov. 11, 1900, by the late Rev. A. Hauge. He was a life-long member of the Vang congregation, and lived on the homestead for most of his life. His parents, eight sisters, and three brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by 14 nieces and nephews as well as many other relatives. He passed away on Sept. 13 at the Dilly Convalescent Home in Northfield, where he had been a resident since 1964.

Rev. Knut E. Bakken died at his home east of the village here on Saturday evening, Oct 23, after an illness of five months. He became ill this spring while pastor of a charge at Verndale, Minn., and was forced to resign on account of poor health, and returned to his farm in the township of Warsaw. his illness was heart trouble and he gradually grew weaker until at last succumbed on Oct 23.

Knute E. Bakken was born in Warsaw Township, Goodhue county, on July 24,1861. He attended St., Olaf College from 1880 to 1882. During the winter of 1882 he attended Decorah Institute, Decorah, Iowa. In 1883 he entered Archibald’s Business College at Minneapolis and graduated from that institution the 29th of May, 1884. in 1885 and 1886 he was engaged as a school teacher. From 1887 to 1889 he was clerk in the Minnesota legislature and during the summer of 1890 he was appointed United States Census Enumerator at St. Paul. In the fall of 1890 he entered the United Church Seminary and graduated June 3, 1893. He accepted a call from Springfield congregation in Winneshiek county, Iowa and was ordained as a minister on the 15th of June 1893, at Minneapolis. He served as pastor in this charge from 1893 to 1911.

On the 15th of November, 1894, he was joined in marriage to Miss Signe Augusta Jacobson of Winneshiek county, Iowa. Besides his wife he leaves nine children, four sons and five daughters, to mourn his death. He also leaves his aged mother, who lives at the old homestead and two brothers, Rev. G.H. Bakken of Wautomah, Wis., and Thomas Bakken of Warwas township, and also two sisters, Mrs. Ole J. Hamre of Erskine, Minn, and Miss Carrie Bakken who lives at the old homestead.

The funeral was held on Thursday oct 28, with a short service at the home and reguar service at Vangs church. Rev. H.O. Fjelstad of Holden congregation preached the funeral sermom. Rev. S. O. Simundson of Kenyon also made a short speech. Prof I.F. Grose of St. Olaf college read a resolution of thanks from the congregation in Winneshiek county, Iowa, where Rev. K.E. Vakken had been pastor for 18 years. During the service John T. Eltun of Northfield rendered a vocal solo. The paulbearers were Rev. A, Hauge, Rev. S.O. Simundsomn, Prof. I.F. Grose, David Jacobson, John Eltun and Sever Stende. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Vangs churh was filled with friends and relatives who were present to attend the funeral services of a man who was loved and respected by a large circle of friends. The remains were laid at rest in Vangs cemetery.

Lærer, kirkesanger, klokker, lærebokforfatter og dirigent bl.a. for Vang Sanglag, Bygdelagskoret og Kjelsås skoles jentekor (som han også stiftet). Han gikk den 3-årige lærerskolen på Hamar og tok eksamen i 1915. Deretter var han i 2 år lærer ved framhaldsskolen i Vang, den var på Fredheim. Da bodde han hjemme hos sin mor og far i Bøe. Vi har skolebilde fra den tid på Tango. Mange av bygda s "gamle" gikk der. I 1917 dro han til Åsnes i Solør, hvor han var i 2 år på Toverud skole, fram til 1919. Han har fortalt at en gang var det så kaldt der at de ikke fikk varmen opp i skolestua og elevene måtte gå hjem. Mens han var i Solør fikk han spanskesyken, da syklet han hjem til Vang for å ligge syk der. På et stevne møtte han styreren for Vestmar folkehøyskule i Drangedal (Telemark), Andreas Ystad, som spurte om han ville bli lærer der. Far kom dit i 1918 og ble der i seks år. Han kaller det selv noe av den mest interessante lærerperioden sin. Mens han var på Vestmar ble han syk, legen fant ikke ut hva det var og far var ett år og 6 mnd på sjukeheimen i Vestre Slidre. Ystad skulle til Marcello Haugen for ett eller annet , og far ba ham også spørre for seg. Da Ystad var ferdig med sine spørsmål, fortalte han at han hadde noen spørsmål fra en venn. Han har satt ut sangen "Alla mina geita" som han kunne etter sin far. Gurvin har også skrevet ned den sangen, etter notater som far har gjort. Far hadde skrevet en note litt slurvete, dermed skrev Gurvin sangen ned med en note feil. Ilse hørte de n i et kor, og oppdaget at det var en liten feil i sangen.

Far var en god felespiller, helt til han brakk lillefingeren og den ble gipset feil av dr. Novotny. Han fortsatte å spille fele etter det, men som han selv sa var det bare som en skygge av hvordan han egentlig hadde kunnet spille. Jeg og alle andr e barn som hørte han spille var veldig imponert over et stykke han spilte som hadde med seg alle slags lyder fra fjøset. Han hadde en nydelig sangstemme, tenor, som gjorde ham kjent som kirkesanger. Han hadde lært stemmebruk hos Marie Irgens, og opptrådte ofte ved festlige anledninger, f.eks. i Valdreslaget.

En sommerdag nellom omkring 1915, kom den senere krigshelten og professoren Arnold Restad, til Tangadn. (Restad ble også senere den første styreformannen i Norsk rikskringkasting). Restad forteller selv om denne turen i en av sine mange bøker, ha n ble rodd fra Vassenda til Helestrønd, og gikk sammen med sitt følge gjennom Tangelia. Der ble han betatt av den vakre naturen og plukket seg ut en tomt på Mehankberget. Far var på stølen da, og Restad kom opp for å snakke om tomten. Far skull e spørre grunneierne om Restad kunne få bygge en hytte på Mehankberget. Andris J Bøe (Andris Sygarde) sa nei, men da far spurte om han selv kunne få sette opp en hytte, var det ikke nei i Andris sin munn. Far og onkel Nils (Nils N Bøe 1881- ) kjøpe en gammel stue fra Syndrolsbøkko, og satte den opp på Mehankberget i 1917, etter at de hadde spurt alle grunneierne om lov. Det var Nils på Kjelvo (se denne ) som satte opp selet, etter at bestefar (Nil s T Bøe) hadde kjørt det opp om vinteren. Selet er antakelig fra midten av 1600-tallet. Den siste som ble født i det, døde i brannen på Kvåle 39/1 i 1936.

Far var et meget klokt menneske, som har tenkt gjennom de fleste sider ved livet. Selv om han var gift med mor, som var tysk, gikk han inn i tysk fangenskap under krigen. Han satt i lærerleiren i Kirkenes, da jeg ble født. Jeg har aldri hørt ha n snakke stygt om noe menneske. Selv om jeg er hans sønn, vil jeg kalle ham en "meget høvisk mann" i tråd med det OBW skriver i Wangensteenslekten. For meg er det ingen overdrivelse når jeg kaller ham "DET BESTE MENNESKE JEG HAR MØTT", selv da ha n gikk i sitt 100 år, hadde han omsorg for andre mennesker, og snakket om livets mening og hvor viktig det er å ta vare på hverandre. Fysisk påsto han at han ikke er sterk, og jeg husker godt han sa at han aldri ville bli så gammel som brødrene sine, da jeg var ung. Likevel overlevde han alle sine søsken og var den av dem som ble eldst. Han ville alltid bli med til Tangadn i pås ken, uansett hvor strevsom det kunne være å komme opp dit. Da han var 98 år gammel, kjørte han selv snøscooter ned til Briskebu.

Han døde på Ullevål sykehus 18. mars 1995, nesten 101 år gammel. Ilse og Eva var hos ham. Selv var jeg på et møte i styret i Cricom regional i Portugal.

Noard was born on June 24, 1920 to Christ and Genevieve (Rassmussen) Hemsing at the family home in Maynard, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Maynard Lutheran Church and attended Maynard Public Schools.

n July 30, 1938 she was united in marriage to Leon "Red" Noard. They lived in Montevideo until 1977 when they moved to Lake Amelia. Red died in 1987 and Gladys remained at their lake home until her health forced her to move to Montevideo in 1997. Gladys worked at Hemstad's Greenhouse for many years and excelled in designing bouquets and corsages, primarily for weddings. She loved cooking, hunting, fishing and working in the outdoors doing lawn care and flower and vegetable gardening. Gladys was a good neighbor and a loving friend to all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon in 1987; a son-in-law, Dennis Peterson; and three brothers: Alfred, Nels and Clarence Hemsing.

Elizabeth, Colo. - Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Franktown, Colo., for Homer Sanderson, 86, formerly of Luverne, Minn., who died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, in Denver, Colo., of apparent heart failure.

Mr. Sanderson was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Steen, Minn. He married Esther Dunn on Feb. 25, 1933. They lived in the Steen area and moved to the West Coast during World War II, where he worked in a defense plant. He then moved to Colorado, where he had lived for 25 years.

Dorothy had a great love for her family. She was always kind and compassionate with a positive outlook on life. She enjoyed taking care of and racing thoroughbred horses and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of the Washburn American Legion Auxiliary and the First Lutheran Church of Washburn.

She is survived by her brother, Orville Selid; her sister, Annie Selid; her son-in-law, Mike Miller; and her 2 grandsons, Corey and Shawn Miller.

Flaten, Leo G. age 97, of Minneapolis died Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born at the family farm on Lake Elizabeth in Atwater, MN on March 9, 1921 and spent his early childhood years in Willmar and Atwater, MN. During WWII he served in the Army of the United States from August 26, 1942 through December 1, 1946 spending 2 1/2 years in England and France. Following discharge, he attended Macalester College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he received his B.S. degree in Economics in March, 1949. He was employed for 36 years by the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota, completing his career in the position of Chief Examiner. He was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1950. He enjoyed reading, especially history books and researching family genealogy with his niece, Jane. He lived in his home until the time of his death. He passed into eternity peacefully in the Emergency Room of Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. Leo is survived by his daughter, Janet (Thomas) Sass, son, David Flaten and grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Sass, Laura Sass and Christina (Ethan) Ongstad and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 720 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis Thursday, August 30th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten was born on August 21, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Balder and Alta (Peterson) Flaten.  He grew up in Atwater, graduating from Atwater High School in 1945 and continuing his education at Macalester College graduating in 1949 with a degree in Mathematics.  He attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota until 1950 and then began teaching math in Wabasso. 

On October 20, 1951, Roy was married to Margaret "Marge" A. Mielke.  They lived in Denver Colorado where Roy served in the U.S. Army at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.  Later they moved to West St. Paul, Minnesota where Roy was employed for 32 years with the 3M Company.  He retired in 1988 and moved to Lake Elizabeth near Atwater.  He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the Kandiyohi County Economic Development Commission.  Roy was an avid reader, a master gardener and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marge of rural Atwater; four daughters, Gretchen (and Brad) Biggerstaff of Puyallup, WA., Nan Flaten of Dallas, TX., Erika Flaten of Hastings, MN., and Jennifer (and Brian) Shaul of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.  Also surviving is one brother, Leo Flaten of Minneapolis and one sister, Helen Diers of Eagan, besides other relatives and friends.

Nordahl T. Flaten Jr., age 88, of Burnsville, went home to heaven on October 19th . Nord is survived by his wife Mertha; his children Sonja (Fred) and Mark (Sharon), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Nord was born in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High in January 1943. After graduation he was inducted into the US Army and was trained for both the infantry and aviation training. In early 1945 he was shipped to Europe where he fought in the battle of the Ruhr Pocket and Drabenderhoe where he received the Bronze Star. In April 1945 his division liberated the German concentration camp at Flossenburg, Germany where two weeks earlier the Christian pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer had been put to death by the Nazi regime by hanging. Upon the end of the war in Europe his division was deployed to Japan for the invasion of Japan and was part of the occupation forces.

Nord was a gifted creative engineer who could imagine and build most anything. During his career he was awarded several patents. He enjoyed and spent many hours on his farm in southeastern Minnesota. He also loved listening to pipe organ music on his stereo. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.

Funeral Service, 11am Friday, October 25, 2013 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Burnsville. Visitation will be held from 10-11am prior to the service. Internment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Berith is mentioned on p. 104 of the Vang B bygdebok but she is erroneously referred to there as “Randi.” The bygdebok identifies her mother as Randi Eiriksdotter Kattevøl.

In the 1880 U.S. census, she is Berit Pedersen, daughter of A. Pederson and his wife Randi of Kerkhoven Twp, Swift County. The rest of the children shown for that family are quite a bit younger although there is a daughter Kersti, age 10 (so born in 1869 or 1870) born in Norway. That implies that A. Pederson and Randi were together in Norway before coming to the U.S. in about 1870. Their 10-year-old son, Gustav, was born in Minnesota.

In the 1910 census, she is 48 years old, has been married for 29 years, and has had 15 children, 14 of whom are still living, and 13 of whom are still living at home. She came to the U.S. in 1872.

Berith married Christopher HOLLEN in 1880.
