Han satt på Stortinget fra 1821-24. Da han kom tilbake fra Stortinget gikk han av som lensmann. Han overtok lensmannsembetet etter Ola Edsvold. Først var han kontorist hos Edsvold. Det ble sagt at han var synsk og kunne følge med på hva de drev med på gårdene, mens han satt på Stortinget. Mange sa han hadde svarte -boka og kunne bruke den når det var behov for det. Sannheten er vel at han brukte mye tid på å snakke med folk fra Vang som var innom Kristiania.

Kvale og bodde dersteds med sin familie 3 sønner og 2 døtre. Imidlertid var eieren av øvre Kvale - Uppågar'n kaldet- - kommen i stor gjæld til lensmand Qvam samt til en låndeindretning i Kristiania, og følgen blev tilslut den, at „Uppågar'n" blev drevet til auktion inde i hovedstaden og Qvam var den enest e som „gjorde bud" og fik tilslaget. The bygdebok, p. 840, calls him Andris Olsson S. Kvam (1791-1838).

He is probably a son of Ola Kristofferson Lerohl (1737-1793) and Berit Torsteinsdatter Skjel Leirol (1755-1835), a union mentioned on p. 885 of the bygdebok. That “probably” is what is assumed here. In the 1801 census, Berit is living on Qvam with her 2nd husband, Jon Ovesson Kvam. Included in their household is a nine year-old Andris Olsen listed as her son.

Jim’s VS agrees with Andris being a son of Ola and Berit. In Jim’s VS, Andris is Andris Olsen Leirol, #I57. Jim’s notes in VS: “Han kalles ofte Andris Olsen Kvam, fordi han vokste opp der sammen med moren og stefaren. Han ble gårbruker på Dalåker da han giftet seg med enken der i 1821. Andris ga bruk nr. 1 til stesønnen Nils Kristoffersen i 1832 og flyttet til bruk 2, syg arden.”

Jim’s Valdres Slekt calls hime Ola Andrisson Dalåker, #I21577. His father was Andris Olsen Leirol, his mother was Ingebjørg Olsdatter Dalåker.

His baptismal sponsors were: Ingebor Andersdatter Braathen, Ingelev (perhaps Ostens or Oves)datter Qvam, Lars Wangensteen, Jöger Andersen Qvam, and Torsten Torstensen Lajorde.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he is probably the Ole Anderssen, age 45, husmand med jord, living on Klættene in Vang. His wife is the 73 year-old Guro Amfindsdatter. Jim calls her Guro Arnfinnsdatter Myreeiga (1793-1870). Earlier, Ole had been a farmer on Dalåker.

The bygdebok (Vang A, p. 840) implies that he stayed in Norway and, of the two Oles, Ole 2 is the one who came to the U.S.

In his entry under Mhyre (Vang A, p. 802), he was livaursmann under Dalåker and husmann on Klettadn.

In the 1880 census, he would seem to be the 59 year-old Ole Anderson living in Udolpho Twp, Mower County, Minnesota. Included in the household are his apparent wife, Anna P., age 38, and 8 children: Gertie, 20, Mary, 15, Andrew, 11, Isabella, 8, Berta, 7, Olena, 5, Anna, 3, and Antoine, 9 months. The four youngest children had been born in Minnesota.

This second Ola was born 10 Nov 1827, bapt 26 Dec, in Vang to Anders Olsen Dalager and Ingeborg Olsdatter.

His baptismal sponsors were Maren Johnsdatter Quam, Ingeborg Knutsdatter Böe, (something) Sönderohl, Knud Söyne, and (something) Johannessen Sonderohl.

In the 1865 Norwegian census, he and Ingeborg and their four sons were on Dahlager 49. He was gaardbruker og selveier.

As Ole Andersen Dalager, he emigrated with his wife Ingeborg Amundsdatter and their five children in July of 1869.

In the 1880 census, he is Ole Dalagher Anderson, age 54, living with his family in Udolpho Twp, Mower County, Minnesota. Others in the household are his wife Isabel, 55, and their children Andrew, 26, Christopher, 20, Ole, 16, Betsy, 13, Antoine, 10, and Emma, 7. The two youngest children were born in Minnesota.

According to an obit from the Ward County Independent of Minot County (cited in Find A Grave, K. Pike), he died in Lansing, Minnesota. His sons were A.A. Dalager of Minot and Ole Dalager of Sawyer. “The decedent leaves also three other children.”

An 81 year-old Ole A. Dalager died in Mower County on 22 Nov 1906. His children were Ole of Renville (a different Ole), Andrew, Chris, and Ole of North Dakota, Ed. A. of Mower County, Anton, Mrs. Sam Kobes of Cathay, North Dakota, and Mrs. Bertha Jackson of St. James, Minnesota.

Ole married Ingeborg Amundsdatter BØ on 20 Oct 1853 in Vang i Valdres, Oppland, Norway. Mary’s obit, as well as her gravestone, says she was born in 1869. That is incorrect.

Her obit said that she came to the U.S. at the age of 18. She and Willie and family moved to a ranch in Stanley County, South Dakota, south of Ft. Pierre, in 1906. They moved into town in 1936. Mary spent her last years in the Alleman Rest Home.

Surviving her are seven children, Goldie, Mrs. Ed Spencer, Ft. Pierre; Myrtle, Mrs. Walter Fackeiman, Ft. Pierre; Mrs. Laura Busch, Los Angeles; Orin and Stanley, Ft. Pierre, and Lowell, Pierre: eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild. A daughter, Viola, died before Mary.

Mabel died from typhoid fever which had produced internal hemorrhaging as well as pneumonia. She lived at 2311 E 32nd Street in Minneapolis and was employed as a “cutter.”

A different Mabel Flaten, a few years older and perhaps a cousin, married a Walter G Lee in Renville County on 11 Sept 1912.

Funeral services for Ole A. Grove, 77, pressman at the Northfield News for 45 years, who passed away at the Northfield hospital on Sunday following a fall on the previous Friday in which he suffered a broken hip, were held on Tuesday, January 25. A brief service ws held at the Minnesota State Odd Fellows Home at 2 p. m. followed by services in the Northfield Congregational-Baptist church at 2:30 p. m. The Rev. Kenneth Martin, pastor of the church, officiated. Interment was made in the Northfield cemetery. During the service Mrs. J. Oliver Sletten and Mrs. S. E. Reed sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden," They were accompanied by Mrs. Etta Larkin. Pallbearers were F. E. Bates, Kenneth Hamann, C. E. Grimes, Herman Roe, Kenneth Johnson and Harold Ramsay. Ole A. Grove was born on January 29, 1872, at Vang, Valders, Norway, the son of Andrew Grove and Gertrude Kvale Grove. When seven years of age he came to the United States with his parents who located in Northfield. Here he learned the printers trade and continued with this profession at the Northfield News until his health failed and he retired. On October 12, 1896, he was married to Mae Cathrine Partlow and they made their home in Northfield their entire married life time. They were the parents of three daughters. Because of the frail health of both, Mr. and Mrs. Grove made their home at the Minnesota State Odd Fellows Home for the past year. Mrs. Grove preceded him in death on last December 9. Mr. Grove is survived by his three daughters, Mrs. Christ Christensen (Gertrude) of Northfield; Mrs. W. G. Rome (Dorothy) of Eden Valley; and Mrs. Laurence Gainhardt (Helen Mae) of Groton, Mass.; three grandchildren, Robert and Carol Rome of Eden valley and Mrs. Boyd Teague (Betty Christensen) of Frederickburg, Va., and one great grandchild, Linda-Jo Teague; two sisters, Mrs. John Hemsworth and Miss Minnie Grove of Minneapolis. Thomas A. Grove, a well known resident of Northfield, died at noon Friday, July 19, after a long illness. Mr. Grove had been in poor health ever since the death of his oldest son, Walter Andrew, three years ago, when he had an attack of scarlet fever. Last February he was taken seriously ill, but recovered sufficiently to return to work again for a few weeks. In May, however, his illness took a turn for the worse, ending in his death last Friday. The funeral exercises were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at the home at 706 Union street and at 3 oclock at the Congregational church chapel, Rev. E. B. Dean officiated. Miss Edna Mabon and Tom Mabon sang two songs, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “Sometime Well Understand,” the same songs that were sung at the funeral of his son three years ago. The interment was made at Oaklawn cemetery, where the burial services were conducted by the Workman lodge, of which the deceased was a member. The profusion of flowers and the large crowd at the funeral testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. The pallbearers at the funeral were L. R. Williamson, D. D. Springsted, C. A. Schleif, Jos. Drake, Ben Odegaard, and Knute Johnson. Visitors from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wohlers of Faribault, and Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hensworth, Nels Kvale, Fred Loe, Ingebret Kvale, Miss Ingelev Kvale, and Miss Holden, all of Minneapolis. Mr. Grove was born in Vang, Valders, Norway, on Sept. 5, 1873, and came to America with his parents in 1876. The family settled in Goodhue county and later removed to this vicinity, where they made their home on a farm on the Brush Prairie road. On Aug. 24, 1901, Mr. Grove was married to Miss Florabelle Chamberlain of Northfield, and the couple went to live on the present Spring Brook farm, where they remained two years. Then they moved to Northfield and with the exception of a year spent in Wichita, Kans., they made this their home since. Mr. Grove was employed as a clerk in grocery stores and was known as one of the best and most efficient clerks in the trade. Most recently he was employed at the L. R. Williamson store. Mr. Grove is survived by his wife and three children, Lyle John, Edgar Thomas and Byer Andrew. He leaves also his aged father, Andrew A. Grove, Sr., of this city, two brothers, Ole Grove of Northfield and Andrew A. Grove of Milbank, S. D., and three sisters, Misses Emma and Minnie Grove and Mrs. R. A. Whitson of Northfield.

The 1900 census shows her as 21 years old, born in September of 1878. She is in the 1880 census as one year-old Mary. It’s hard to understand why the obvious error of the 1881 birth date is repeated so many times in the records, including her gravestone and her obit.

In the 1930 census, she is Minnie Grove, age 39, living in a rooming house in Fargo, North Dakota. She is a corset clerk in a department store.

Funeral services for Miss Minnie Grove, 73, who passed away at the Northfield Hospital Tuesday evening, Dec. 28, after a short illness, were held this afternoon at the Anderson Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Ivar Ramseth officiated at 1:30 p.m. Burial was made in the family lot in the Northfield Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Elling, Roland Hoover, John Ellingboe, Clarence Kolstad, Algot Pearson and Forest Drake. Miss Minnie Grove was born in Northfield on Sept. 6, 1881. She made her home in Northfield where she attended the local schools and was employed for several years as saleslady in the Alex Marshall Company. In 1924 she left to make her home in Fargo, N. D., where she remained until 1938. Since that time she has resided in Northfield and Minneapolis making her home with her sister, Mrs. Emma Hemsworth. For the past several years they have spent the winters in an apartment in the Elling house and their summers in Mrs. Hemsworth's home in Minneapolis. Besides her sister, Miss Grove, is survived by several nieces and nephews including Mrs. Chris Christensen of Northfield.

Louis Grove Jul/1909 LAID TO REST---REMAINS OF LOUIS GROVE RECEIVED AND CONSIGNED TO GRAVE. Remains of Louis Grove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew A. Grove, who was accidentally killed July 29 at Seattle, Wash. was received in Northfield Wednesday morning. A letter accompany the remains stated that death resulted from a fall under a loaded wagon which he was driving. The wagon passed over his head and chest, injuring them so badly that death came in a very short time. Funeral services were held Wednesday evening at 5 oclock. Prof. O. Lee conducted the service. John Eltun sang which added to the impressive service. The presence of many friends and the numerous offerings evidenced the high regard with which the deceased was held in Northfield. People from out of the city who attended the last sad rites were: Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Grove, Jr., of Milbank, S. D. ; Mr. and Mrs. Sever Loe, Miss Kvale, Miss Louise Fendrom, Miss Mary Ellingboe, and Walter Chamberlain of Minneapolis.

This illegitimate daughter of Berit Olsdatter Kvale (b. 1851) and Lars Johnson Wangensteen (b. 1848) was the first demonstrable leirmal for each parent. Ove Olsen Kvale was the responsible member of the Vang congregation who stood for the illegitimate Berit.

From the Emigrantar over Bergen frå Austlande, on August 26, 1898: three unmarried individuals who were born in Vang i Valdres but were returning to their home in Minneapolis after a visit departed on the Stjernelinjen line. The three were: Britha Larsen Kvale, 26, b. 1872 (#11616), occupation syerske (seamstress), Rangdi Tollefsen Ellingbø, 28, b. 1870, occupation syerske, and Jørgen Tollefsen Ellingbø, 31, b. 1867, occupation juveler.

Rangdi and Berith arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Majestic on September 8, 1898, after departing Liverpool on August 31st. Rangdi is shown as a U.S. citizen, Berith is a citizen of Norway.

She is probably the Bertha Kvale of Minneapolis, listed in the Valdris Book, who was a member of the Samband between 1902 and 1910.

According to MOMS, Bertha L Kvale married “Christ A Joe” in Hennepin County, Minnesota, on 1 Jan 1913. The Minnesota Marriages database on FamilySearch clarifies the husband’s name for this marriage as Christ A Loe. Bride and groom were both “of Hennepin County.” The ELCA record of the marriage shows Inga Ellingbo of Minneapolis as one of the witnesses. We don’t know who that Inga was.

The hospital was the informant for the information on her death certificate. At the time of her death, she lived at 2622 3rd Avenue S. She had been in Minneapolis for 40 years. She died from an acute small bowel obstruction due to post-operatory adhesions. She had an operation, and “exploratory laporatomy,” on June 21st. She had entered the hospital with peritonitis and bronchopneumonia.

In the 1900 U. S. census, Rangdi (b. June 1872) and Jorger Ellingbo (b. July 1867), brother and sister, are living with their newly-arrived niece, Mary Ellingboe (b. June 1883), at 1425 Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis. Rangdi is a seamstress, Jorger is a jeweler, and Mary has no occupation. Jorger originally came to the U. S. in 1885 and Rangdi in 1890. That niece Mary may have been caught in the 1900 census at the location of her employer where a 16 year-old Mary Ellingbo (but one supposedly born in May of 1884), recently arrived in the U.S. (1900), is a servant at the home of the Cargill family (the Cargills) on 33rd and Portland. (Could not find a Marit born to Ellingboes in Vang in 1884.)

The Vang church book emigration record shows a Marit Andersdatter Ellingbø, b. 1883, emigrating to the U. S. in 1900, perhaps leaving Vang on March 21st. Ole Iversen Ellingboe (#9188) left Vang at about the same time, perhaps leaving Vang on March 23rd.

Also from the Emigrantar over Bergen frå Austlande, on March 23, 1900, Marit Andersdtr Ellingbø, 17, b. 1883, born and living in Vang, unmarried, departed on the Allan line. Her occupation is shown as “datter af Veivgter.” Marit departed from Liverpool on the S.S. Tunisian on April 5, 1900, and arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 14, 1900. She is shown as Marit A. Ellingboe, single female, age 16, occupation “servant.” Her last residence was Valders and her final destination is Minneapolis. She paid for her own passage and had $5. She was going to join her cousin Rangde Ellingbö. Marit appears to have been traveling with 16 year-old Ragnhild Lunde, also from Valders (but not, apparently, from Vang) and also heading to Minneapolis to find work as a domestic.

In the 1901 Minneapolis city directory, she is Marit A Ellingbo, a seamstress, living with Jøger T Ellingbo at 1425 East Franklin.

She was one of the witnesses to her uncle Jøger’s 1903 marriage to Olena.

In the 1903 Minneapolis city directory, she is Marie Ellingbo, tailor at A J Kidd, boarding with Rangdi at 2121 13th Avenue S.

In the 1907 Minneapolis city directory, she is probably the Mary Ellingbo, seamstress, rooming at 2417 Butler Place.

In the 1909 Minneapolis city directory she is Marie Ellingbo, a seamstress who boards at 2417 Butler Place. There was a Conrad Hanson living on Butler Place at the same time.

In the 1910 Minneapolis city directory, she is still Marie Ellingbo, still a seamstress, still boarding at 2417 Butler Place.

Because Bertha is listed as “sister-in-law” in the 1920 census, we can deduce that Mary became the wife of Conrad Hanson and was living at 4420 43rd Avenue South in Minneapolis at that time.

Shown as Mary I. in her death certificate. Her father was shown as Ole Ellingboe and her mother as Ingeborg Qvale. The informant for her death certificate was her son Burton Hanson of 6421 Oliver in Minneapolis. (Burton was mistaken: Marit’s father was, indeed, Anders Tollefson.) Mary died of asthma and heart disease. Her usual residence at the time of death was 2246 East 56th Street in Minneapolis which may be the address of the “St. Olaf Residence.”

He may be the 23 year-old Ola R. Ellingboe lodging at about 7th Avenue and 10th Street in Minneapolis in the 1910 census. He is a packer in a furniture factory or store and came to the U.S. in 1909.

She is probably the Inga Ellingboe, age 19, servant, living in Richfield, Minnesota, in the 1910 census. She is living with the brothers Nels and Conrad Hanson on their dairy farm at about 54th Street and 28th Avenue. Also living on the farm is Arnold Heen, 23. All are from Norway and all appear to have come to the U.S. after 1900.

Jim’s site, in Valdres Slekt, says that she went to the U.S. before she had children and notes that the bygdebok doesn’t say anything about her coming back. Whatever, she is buried in the Vang church cemetery in Norway with her husband.

She had a daughter Ingeborg (b. ca 1935) with Anders Boe (b. 1878). The bygdebok has this Anders (son of Ola Andrisson Bøe 1854-1948 and Anne Olsdatter Øylo 1856-1938) as born in 1888, dying in 1953, and unmarried.

She arrived in New York on April 3, 1915, aboard the S.S. Kristianiafjord which had departed Bergen on March 25th. Berit was single, age 20, occupation domestic. She gave her father Anders T. Ellingbö of Vang, Valders, as her nearest relative in the country she had come from. She was traveling with her cousin Marit (10705).

In the 1916 Minneapolis city directory, she is probably the Bertha Ellingboe, seamstress, boarding at 4341 Nokomis Avenue.

She may be the Bertha Elingbow, a helper/laundress at Sheltering Arms, in the 1917 and 1918 Minneapolis city directories. There are no other Bertha Ellingboe variants in those two city directories.

In the 1918 Alien Registration, she was Bertha Ellingbo, age 23, of Minneapolis.

In the 1919 city directory, she is probably the Bertha Ellingbo who is a machine operator for Brown Brothers Mercantile Co. She boarded at 3500 16th Avenue S.

She is the Bertha Ellingbo, “sister-in-law”, living with the Mary and Conrad Hanson family in Minneapolis in the 1920 census. (Also see 6236.) She is a tailoress and came to the U.S. in 1915.

She died as Bertha E. Hanson, wife of Henry A. The informant for her death certificate was Burton Hanson. Her parents were Anders Ellingboe and Ingeborg Qvale. This is a different father than the Ole Ellingboe who Burton Hanson said was his mother’s father. Bertha was a seamstress engaged in the tailoring business. She died from a stroke. Her usual residence was 3414 Minnehaha Avenue.

Jim’s site’s Valdres Slekt does not include Berit in the children of Anders and Ingeborg. Nor does the bygdebok.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, August 19, for Dr. Nils Flaten, a member of the faculty of St. Olaf college for 47 years who died at his home, 1401 Forest Avenue, Northfield, at 4 o'clock Sunday morning, August 17. The services were held in St. John's Lutheran church with the pastor, the Rev. Arnold Nelson, officiating. During the service Mrs. Gertrude Boe Overby sang "I Know A Sleep in Jesus Name" and "I'm But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home." Many greetings and memorial gifts were given at the services. Interment was in Oaklawn cemetery with Paul Bollenbacher, E. C. Jacobson, Clarence Carlson, Alf Houkom, Hjalmar Lokensgard and Rolf Solum as pallbearers.

Nils Flaten was born in Valdres, Norway, March 18, 1867, the son of Ole and Maren (Wangensten) Flaten. With his parents he came to the United States when he was a year old. They settled in the Dennison community, Goodhue County, where his father was a teacher. He was educated in the local public schools and at the St. Olaf School and the Carleton Academy. Then he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1893, the Master of Arts degree in 1896 and the Doctor of Philosphy degree in 1900. He also studied at the Universities of Grenoble in France and Barcelona in Spain. Dr. Flaten taught at the Grand Forks College 1893-94 and at the United Church seminary in St. Paul from 1894 to 1900. He joined the faculty of St. Olaf College in 1900 as Professor of Latin and in 1916 was made professor of Romance Languages. He was active as a teacher until November 1946 when illness confined him to his home. During World War I in 1918-19 Dr. Flaten served with the Y.M.C.A. in Italy.

In the 1930 census, Austin Austinson, 60, lived in the village of Dennison, Warsaw Twp, Goodue County. The family consisted of him, Severina, 51, Myron C., 25, and Evelyn T., 14. Austin was a retail grocery merchant. Their home was worth $5000.

Ellingboe, on Sunday, September 7. She had been in poor health for some time. She was the daughter of Trond and Marit Austinson, born, April 14, 1870, in Dennison, where she had spent the greater part of her life. She attended the public schools and had teacher training in Minnesota. She was married to Thrond I. Ellingboe on June 24, 1900. Ellingboe passed away several years ago. She served on the local school boards and the Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the Jehova's Witness faith. Surviving Mrs. Ellingboe are Iver T. Ellingboe, Pueblo, Colorado; Mrs. George Chandler, Vancouver, B. C. Canada; Arthur Ellingboe, Dennison; Mrs. Calvin F. Schmid, Seattle, Washington, and Mrs. Louis Heggedhal, Kenyon. There are eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She leaves on sister, Miss Minnie J. Austinson, Dennison and one brother, Nils Austinson, North Sacramento, California. The funeral was held at the Anderson Mortuary in Northfield with Quentin H. Newland of Lakeville, officiating. Burial was in the Oaklawn cemetery at Northfield. Pallbearers were Myron Heggedahl, Bernard Ellingboe, Ludvig Austinson, John Schumm, Gudmund Norswing and Edward Ellingboe. Mr. and Mrs. Iver T. Ellingboe, Pueblo, Mrs. George Chandler, Vancouver and Mrs. C. F. Schmid, Seattle, were here for the funeral.”

Mrs. Louis Heggedahl was Amanda Emmeline Ellingboe, the daughter of Emma’s husband and his first wife.

Dorothy had a great love for her family. She was always kind and compassionate with a positive outlook on life. She enjoyed taking care of and racing thoroughbred horses and visiting with family and friends. She was a member of the Washburn American Legion Auxiliary and the First Lutheran Church of Washburn.

She is survived by her brother, Orville Selid; her sister, Annie Selid; her son-in-law, Mike Miller; and her 2 grandsons, Corey and Shawn Miller.

Flaten, Leo G. age 97, of Minneapolis died Friday, August 24, 2018. He was born at the family farm on Lake Elizabeth in Atwater, MN on March 9, 1921 and spent his early childhood years in Willmar and Atwater, MN. During WWII he served in the Army of the United States from August 26, 1942 through December 1, 1946 spending 2 1/2 years in England and France. Following discharge, he attended Macalester College for two years before transferring to the University of Minnesota where he received his B.S. degree in Economics in March, 1949. He was employed for 36 years by the Commerce Department of the State of Minnesota, completing his career in the position of Chief Examiner. He was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church since 1950. He enjoyed reading, especially history books and researching family genealogy with his niece, Jane. He lived in his home until the time of his death. He passed into eternity peacefully in the Emergency Room of Fairview Southdale Hospital surrounded by his family. Leo is survived by his daughter, Janet (Thomas) Sass, son, David Flaten and grandchildren, Jonathan (Emily) Sass, Laura Sass and Christina (Ethan) Ongstad and other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 720 13th Avenue South in Minneapolis Thursday, August 30th at 10:30 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten age 85, of rural Atwater, died Thursday morning, July 24, at the Fairview University Hospital in Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, July 29, at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar. Military Honor Guard will be provided by the Austin F. Hanscom American Legion Post #167 of Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Monday, July 28, at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Willmar are preferred.

Elroy "Roy" J. Flaten was born on August 21, 1928, in Willmar, Minnesota, the son of Balder and Alta (Peterson) Flaten.  He grew up in Atwater, graduating from Atwater High School in 1945 and continuing his education at Macalester College graduating in 1949 with a degree in Mathematics.  He attended graduate school at the University of Minnesota until 1950 and then began teaching math in Wabasso. 

On October 20, 1951, Roy was married to Margaret "Marge" A. Mielke.  They lived in Denver Colorado where Roy served in the U.S. Army at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal.  Later they moved to West St. Paul, Minnesota where Roy was employed for 32 years with the 3M Company.  He retired in 1988 and moved to Lake Elizabeth near Atwater.  He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church and a volunteer for the Kandiyohi County Economic Development Commission.  Roy was an avid reader, a master gardener and enjoyed woodworking.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marge of rural Atwater; four daughters, Gretchen (and Brad) Biggerstaff of Puyallup, WA., Nan Flaten of Dallas, TX., Erika Flaten of Hastings, MN., and Jennifer (and Brian) Shaul of Colorado Springs, CO; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.  Also surviving is one brother, Leo Flaten of Minneapolis and one sister, Helen Diers of Eagan, besides other relatives and friends.

Nordahl T. Flaten Jr., age 88, of Burnsville, went home to heaven on October 19th . Nord is survived by his wife Mertha; his children Sonja (Fred) and Mark (Sharon), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Nord was born in Minneapolis and graduated from Roosevelt High in January 1943. After graduation he was inducted into the US Army and was trained for both the infantry and aviation training. In early 1945 he was shipped to Europe where he fought in the battle of the Ruhr Pocket and Drabenderhoe where he received the Bronze Star. In April 1945 his division liberated the German concentration camp at Flossenburg, Germany where two weeks earlier the Christian pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer had been put to death by the Nazi regime by hanging. Upon the end of the war in Europe his division was deployed to Japan for the invasion of Japan and was part of the occupation forces.

Nord was a gifted creative engineer who could imagine and build most anything. During his career he was awarded several patents. He enjoyed and spent many hours on his farm in southeastern Minnesota. He also loved listening to pipe organ music on his stereo. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.

Funeral Service, 11am Friday, October 25, 2013 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Burnsville. Visitation will be held from 10-11am prior to the service. Internment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Elmer Dalager of Montevideo died Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Presbyterian Homes on Lake Minnetonka in Spring Park, Minnesota, at the age of 96.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Montevideo. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Elmer Norman Dalager was born January 6, 1918 at Granite Falls, MN the son of Christopher and Mathilda (Ellefson) Dalager. He attended rural school and graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1937. Elmer served in the US Navy during WW II and was stationed in the Philippines. On April 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Idell Erickson at the Hanley Falls Lutheran Church. They lived for a short time in Minneapolis and Marshall, Minnesota, before moving to Montevideo in 1949. Elmer worked at Molde’s Electric before becoming deputy county treasurer in the late 1950's. He served as the Chippewa County Treasurer until retiring in the early 1980's. Elmer played town team baseball in his younger years. He put a lot of time and energy into the development of Lagoon Park. He enjoyed camping, fishing and playing golf. He especially loved being around people and had a good sense of humor.
 
He is survived by his two daughters: Susan Halverson and her husband Jon of Minnetonka, and Karen Ryan and her husband John of Plymouth; three grandchildren: Molly (Sam) Auseth, Adam (Rhiana) Halverson and Robert Ryan; six great-grandchildren: Olivia and Dylan Auseth, Adriana, Ivy, and Hudson Halvorson, and Lachlyn Ryan.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Idell in 2004; four brothers: Orville, Melvin, Christopher, and Chester Dalager; and two sisters: Lillian Stevens and Ruth Stevens.

Donna Delaney passed away peacefully in the company of her family on October 26th. She was the beloved wife of the late Gene Delaney; loving mother of Dan (Kathy), Dick (Millie), Chris (Anne), Kathy Delaney (Bill Saunders and son Craig), Terry and Tom Delaney; dear grandmother of Dan, Walt, Annie (Dave) Porter, Miles (Katie), Ryan (Suzie), Lexie, Lauren, Matt, Meaghan, Jenny, Kevin and Mike; great granddaughter Addie. 

Donna was born in Chicago to Dr. Roy A. and Catherine B. Dallager (née Seery) and raised in South Shore, first on Euclid then on Bennett Ave. One of the high points of her early years, and the source of many stories, was spending time during the summer at the cottage her father Roy built by himself in Momence, Illinois down by the wild Rock River. This was the site of endless pranks by her brother Dick (aka The Big Dealer, Uncle Tully, Old Gus), whom she loved dearly in spite of, or perhaps because of, his constant kidding of her. 

Her parish and grammar school was Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Here began a lifelong friendship with Monsignor Ignatius McDermott, MSW (“Father Mac”), a young assistant pastor who later dedicated his life initiating trail-blazing programs for those fighting addiction. Fr. Mac provided important support and consolation at two key times in Donna’s life - when her father died unexpectedly after surgery and again 51 years later during the final days of her husband Gene. 

After four years at Aquinas Dominican H.S., she attended Barat College and then Mundelein College for nearly a year, but college was not her cup of tea. It was back to beloved South Shore and work in the city at the offices of Peabody Coal Co. 

Donna delighted in telling her kids of the time during her courtship with Gene when he was picked up by Chicago police while he waited for her to return home in his father’s black Buick. Turns out that idling a black Buick down the block from the home of reputed Chicago Outfit racketeer Murray “The Camel” Humphreys was not the ideal way to begin a date. However, the incident did not deter Gene and they were married in May of 1949. 

After early years in their garden apartment in Chatham, Donna and Gene, with 4 kids in tow, moved to their first house in La Grange, spending 10 years raising a growing family and meeting lifelong friends like Lou & Otto Molidor. A family can be thought of as the sum of its stories and the years in LaGrange provided hundreds, which were told and re-told amidst laughter throughout the years, right up to her last days. It doesn’t get any better than that. 

After 2 years in Connecticut, Donna and Gene returned to the Chicago area and completed raising their family in Northbrook. During these years, Donna was Eucharistic Minister for more than a decade at Our Lady of the Brook and even had a short-lived career in real estate at Lake Bay Realty. It became clear pretty quickly that Donna’s heart was in filling a home with food, joy and fun rather than selling it. 

One of her longest-lasting achievements was hosting an annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl for 36 years in her Northbrook backyard. Family, school friends and neighbors would take to the field in games where the same plays seemed to be run each year and the games always ended in a tie, thanks to the officiating of Gene Delaney and Jack McCarthy. One year, several players opted to stay for Thanksgiving dinner, which warmed Donna’s heart. 

That was what Donna cherished the most – her family and happy meals around her well-stocked table. Her family will all miss those meals, but will always remember them.
