Confirmed in Vang on 20 Jun 1841 as Anne Tostensdtr Kjöseiet, daughter of Tosten Tostensen and Anne Andersdatter. She had been vaccinated on 28 June 1828. Her birthdate is unclear although it looks like her baptism date was 27 Aug 1826.

Kaye says: Both Randi and the local church were opposed to the marriage of Anders Larson and Anne the elder even though they had two children:.

Funeral services were held at the Vang Lutheran church, Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m. for Mrs. Mary Rauk, who passed away at the Gaylord Hospital in Gaylord, Minn., Wednesday, March 27, at the age of 92 years. The Rev. B. J. Blikstad officiated. Mrs. Blikstad sang "O God Of Mercy" and "Tenk naar engang", accompanied by the church organist, Mrs. Cyrus Midje. A poem, "Life", composed by Jennifer Frettem, an 11 year old grandchild of Mrs. Rauk was read. Pallbearers were Robert Larson, Rodney Rauk, Charles Meyer, Stanley Arndt, Mayold Frettem and Charles Anderson. She was laid to rest in the Vang Cemetery. Mary Rauk was the daughter of Roar and Anna Kjos Quam. She was born Dec. 29, 1871, in Holden Township, Goodhue County. She was baptized and confirmed by the late J. N. Kildahl. She was united in marriage to Knut Rauk in 1890. They established their home on a farm adjoining that of her girlhood home in Holden Township, where she lived until 1932. She then moved to Kenyon, where she has since resided. Her husband died in 1927. Ten children have also preceded her in death. She is survived by eight children, Mrs. Lester (Sophia) Larson, Hans, Sigurd and Raymond of Nerstrand; Carl of Vermillion, S. D.; Mrs. Willard (Agnes) Meyer of Winthrop, Minn.; Mrs. Martin (Mildred) Westermo, Madison, Wis. and Mrs. Charles (Thelma) Rumpf, Denver. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was a life-long member of the Vang Lutheran church and took a keen interest in her church and community. She was a gold star mother.

Albert was the son of Minnesota natives Gertrude Anderson and Christian Kolstad; brother of Enga, Ann and Julia Kolstad.

At the time of the 1900 census, the family was living in Warsaw, Goodhue County, Minnesota. By 1910, Albert's mother was widowed. Albert, his mother, and sister Julia, were living in Cannon Fall, MN.

By 1920, Albert, living in Warsaw, MN, was married to Myrtle and they had a six-month-old son, Clifford. Albert's mother, Gertrude, was also living with them.

In 1940, Albert and Myrtle were living in San Francisco. In addition to Clifford (age 20), they had two more children: Virgil (age 19), and Shirley (age 12).

Bernard Lien of Maynard died on Monday May 23 at the Clara City Nursing Home in Clara City at the age of 88. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday May 28 at 1:30 P.M. at the Wang Lutheran Church near Maynard, Mn. with Rev. Ronald Duty officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 2:45 PM Friday at the Clara City Nursing Home and visitation Friday afternoon and evening and with the family from 7-8 PM at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Bernard Christian Lien was born on June 23, 1905 in Wang Township of Renville Co., Minnesota to George and Sophia Lien. He was baptized and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church and attended rural school District #44. He was united in marriage to Alice Hoverstad on April 4, 1931. He farmed for many years on the Lien Homestead in Wang township before retiring in 1975. In 1976 he moved into Maynard and for the past 4 years has been a resident of the Clara City Nursing Home. He was a lifelong member of the Wang Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife - Alice; by a son - Robert (Donna Mae) of Maynard, Mn.; by daughters - Doris (Jack) Brambilla of Shakopee, Mn.; and another daughter [name removed for privacy]; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 brothers; 1 sister; as well as by several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers - Elmer and Ernest Lien; sisters - Mabel Steen and Esther Fletcher; and a son-in-law - Pete Gronewold.

She was born on January 3,1891 in Holden Township to Knute and Mary Qvamme Rauk. She was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church in rural Dennison. She graduated from St. Olaf Academy in 1910 and later taught in rural Goodhue County. In 1916 she was united in marriage to Lester Larson. The couple resided in the Nerstrand area until Sophia entered the Kenyon Sunset Home in 1988. She was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid at Grace. She also taught Monday School at Grace for many years.

She is survived by one son Lester Robert Larson, and his wife Joan, of Nerstrand; three daughters, Marie Tolley and her husband, Robert, of Long Beach, California, Julie Farmer of Kenyon and Avis Frethem and her husband, Harland, of Richfield, Minnesota; 22 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Agnes Meyer of Winthrop, Minnesota, Mildred Westermoe of Madison, Wisconsin, and Thelma Rumpf of San Diego, California. A sad and unfortunate accident occurred last week near Nerstrand in Goodhue County when Thelma, the four year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Knute Rauk, was burned to death. The child’s dress becoming ignited from the flames of a burning straw pile, there being no one near enough to save her with the exception of a little brother, who ran to the house for help, but by the time help arrived she was so badly burned that she died in a couple of hours. The father had set fire to a straw stack in the field some distance from the house and several of the younger children were watching the flames. The children came too near and the fire, burning off everything she had on and herself fatally. Death followed two and one-half hours after the accident.

Johnny Clarence Flom, age 92, a lifelong resident of Dennison passed away on Thursday evening, August 12, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

Johnny was born at home on December 23, 1918 in Sogn, the son of John and Inga (Kolstad) Flom. He attended rural country school District #52 in Sogn. Johnny married Marion B. "Trudy" Eggum on February 22, 1945 at the Dennison parsonage. He and Trudy worked together farming and raising six children. He milked cows for 80 years.

Johnny was a lifelong, active member and held many offices at Urland Lutheran Church, where his father was a co-founder. He was also a member of the Wanamingo Township Board for many years. Johnny was proud to be 100% Norwegian. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and flying ultralight aircraft. He also loved to visit, play cards, read and be with people.

He is survived by his children, John (Diane) Flom of Faribault, Leslie (Linda) Flom of Dennison, Gail Flom of Dennison, Bonnie (Mark) Thompson of Custer, SD, Dennis Flom of Minneapolis and Darryl (Cynthia) Flom of Dennison; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Lester (Doris) Flom of Dennison; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 59 years, Trudy on July 3, 2004; daughter-in-law, Barbara; twin brother, Joseph Flom; sisters, Gladys Berquam, Alice Ross, Myrtle Cummings and Emma Berquam.

Lester Edward Flom, age 88 of rural Dennison, died at his home on Saturday, August 16, 2014 of pulmonary fibrosis.

Lester was born July 21, 1926 on the family farm in rural Dennison near Sogn to John L. and Inga (Kolstad) Flom. He was the grandson of Lars and Ingeborg Flom and Christian and Gertrude Kolstad, both pioneer settlers in the Little Cannon Valley. He was sure he grew up in the best place a boy could. He had hills and woods to explore, hunt and ski. The river was for swimming, fishing and skating.

Lester attended school at District 52, a one room country school. Later he attended high school in Cannon Falls and the School of Agriculture in St. Paul.

He spent seven years in the U.S. Navy and was an overseas veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He traveled the Pacific from Alaska to Australia and from California to China with many interesting stops. Lester was in China before it became a communist country. In the spring of 1945 diplomats from all over the world gathered in San Francisco to form a new worldwide organization. Lester was assigned to a group providing security and support for them. The new organization was called the United Nations. They were sure this organization could prevent wars in the future. In 1948 he was involved in the testing of atomic bombs six, seven and eight in the Marshall Islands.

Lester began farming March 15, 1952 on the land where his parents and grandparents farmed before him. On June 21, 1952 Lester married Doris Quam at Urland Church. They were truly farming partners.

Lester enjoyed many fly-in fishing trips to Canada. He also enjoyed hunting caribou, elk, deer and antelope. He was a Twins and Vikings fan. Lester was an avid reader. Even as a boy he thought a book was a great gift. Since retiring he had checked out more than 1500 books from the Cannon Falls Public Library.

He is survived by Doris, his wife of 62 years; five children, Julie (Gary) Warner, Pam (Steve) Tralle, Kathy (Daryl) Bergs, Eric (Melanie) Flom, and Evan (Mary Ann) Flom; six grandchildren, four step grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gladys Berquam, Emma Berquam, Alice Ross, and Myrtle Cummings; and brothers, twins Joseph and Johnny Flom.

Visitation will be Friday, August 22 from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10-11 a.m., at Urland Lutheran Church in rural Cannon Falls, where he was baptized, confirmed and married. LOIS L. NYMAN, age 80 of Grand Rapids, MN, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010 in Grand Rapids. Lois was born in Montevideo, MN to Elmer and Agnes Lien in 1930. She was the oldest of three children, Margaret Ann and James Allen followed. Lois attended grade and high school in Maynard, MN, graduating in 1948. She attended St. Olaf College for a year before entering nurses training at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. After completing her training, Lois became a Registered Nurse in 1952. She continued to work at Fairview for 3 years before traveling to California to work at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles for 3 years. After her return to Minnesota, Lois was united in marriage to Robert Nyman in 1959. To their family was born 4 sons, Eric, Leif, Sten and Karl. In 1972, the family moved to Grand Rapids, where Bob became a realtor and also owned a print shop. After a time, Lois went to work at the Grand Rapids Hospital as a R.N. She worked there for 20 years, retiring in 1991. Lois also raised her brothers children, Sandra and David, from the time they were 7 and 10 years old. Lois was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. Preceding her in death were her parents, her sister and brother and sister-in-law. Survived by Four Sons- Eric Nyman of Hutchinson, MN, Leif Nyman and Sten Nyman, both of Grand Rapid, MN, and Karl Nyman of Coon Rapids, MN; Special Niece- Sandra (Tony) Filipiak of Grand Rapids, MN; Special Nephew- David Lien of Colorado Springs, CO; Grandchildren Sean and Faith A Gathering of Family and Friends will be Saturday, November 6th from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Memorial Service at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. The Maynard community was saddened on Thursday evening, August 1st, by the announcement that Marguerite Lien had passed away at the Montevideo hospital, after an illness of but a few hours.

Her death was the result of cerebral hemorrhage, the symptoms indicating her ailment becoming manifest shortly before noon.She lapsed into a coma about three o'clock. The doctor was called and she was immediately rushed to Montevideo hospital, where everything possible was done for her with out avail. She never regained consciousness.

She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lien, she was born in Maynard on November 28, 1931, died August 1st, 1946.Her age being 14 years, 8 months and 3 days.

She was a member of the Maynard Lutheran Church, very active in the Sunday school, the choir, the Lutherans daughters of Fermentation and the Luther League and on June 9th this year she was a member of the Confirmation class of Fourteen.

She was looking forward to the approaching school year with avid interest having finished her Freshman course last year with high standings and about to enter the Sophomore year with her classmates.

She was a young lady of exceptional merit, popular among her classmates, and loved and respected by all with whom she came in contact with.

Funeral services were conducted from the home at 1:45 and at the Maynard Lutheran Church at 2:00p.m. on Monday, August 5th.

Internment occurred in the Maynard Lutheran cemetery.

Pallbearers were; Willard Anderson, Dean Eggen, Gene Fransen, John Peterson, LaVere Ulvik, and Virgil Eckhoff.
It is fitting that she should be accompanied to her final resting place by these her loving friends and classmates.

Willard Hanson, 85, formerly of White Earth, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Tioga Nursing Home.

Willard was born March 19, 1931 in White Earth, ND, the son of Harold and Esther (Ives) Hanson. Growing up, he attended a country school by White Earth. Willard met Edra Kuhlman through mutual friends. After a year and a half courtship, Willard received Art’s blessing and they were joined in marriage on January 4, 1953 in White Earth. Their first home is fondly remembered as the “honeymoon shack”. Due to the rustic conditions of the cabin and the extra neighbors (mice), they moved in with her parents two days later. They stayed there until the house that became their lifelong home was completed. With this union, they were blessed with two children, Beverly and Paul. Together Willard and Edra ranched and raised their family in the White Earth Valley. Even though their children’s lives on earth were short, Willard and Edra cherished every memory made with them.

Willard was very involved in the community of White Earth. He served on the Myrtle Township Board and was one of the first members of the White Earth Valley Saddle Club. He helped to organize the White Earth Rodeo in its early years. He enjoyed getting to know other cowboys from the state and looked forward to boarding horses for them. He loved giving wagon rides. Willard was a 64 year member of the ND Stockman’s Association.

Willard and Edra enjoyed organizing and helping with the White Earth Centennial celebration. He was fond of butchering for his friends and neighbors. He was always willing to help cook for a pig roast or barbeque. Most of the time it turned out perfect, but there was a rumor once that the pig tasted a lot like venison!

He will be remembered for his love of the White Earth Valley and the love of he had for the cowboy way of life. Willard spent his life doing what he loved, sitting on his deck visiting, enjoying the view of the valley and he especially enjoyed riding his horse and messing with his coulee cows.

Willard experienced many hardships and loss in his life, but he was a man that gained great faith from it. He knew the Lord was with him and trusted in His care.

He is survived by his sister, Arlene Westrum; brother, ElRoy (Diane) Hanson; sister-in-law, Mary (Albert) Western; numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.

Ione Lundell, age 92, of Cannon Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021 at Cannon Rivers Senior Living.

Ione Elaine Lundell was born at home, in Holden Township, on October 17, 1928, the daughter of Helmer and Gladys (Flom) Berquam. She grew up in the Sogn Valley area and attended the District #54 country school, graduating from Kenyon High School.

On June 14, 1947, Ione was united in marriage to Wayne Lundell at Urland Lutheran Church. They made their home on a small farm outside of Cannon Falls, where Ione was a homemaker. Her passion was a large garden and lots of flowers. Canning enough tomatoes to get through the winter was a labor of love for her. In addition to her work on the farm, Ione was also employed as a nursing assistant and activities director at the Cannon Nursing Home for a number of years. After 40 years on the farm, Ione yearned for big city life, so she moved to a townhouse in Cannon Falls. Meeting many new friends, she ended up in a card group, playing five days a week. She also enjoyed Saturday morning coffee with her kids, and cooking her famous goulash hotdish. She could be found every evening at 6:30 in front of the TV in her recliner watching 'The Wheel', and loved playing along on the show Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader. Ione has been a member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church for over 70 years, where she enjoyed being a member of the Bell Ringers. Ione also enjoyed china painting, bowling, bingo, needlepoint, and entering exhibits at the fair.

Survivors include her seven children Ilene (Rick) Fox, Susan Iverson, Rodney Lundell, Debra (Jarle) Norstad, Mark Lundell, Colleen Scott, and Dawn Friedrich; grandchildren Robin, Jesse, Ben, Dylan, Tony, Tara, Nicole, Matthew, Lindsay, Derek, Brent, Courtney, Jennifer, and Dustin; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings Gerhard (Marion) Berquam, Donald (Glenna) Berquam, Gloria Peter, and Lois Burdick; brothers-in-law Dale Lundell, Floyd Budensiek, and Curt Duden; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wayne, sons-in-law Craig Scott and Scott Friedrich; sister Helen Berquam; and brother Harland Berquam.

Helen K. Berquam, age 74, of Cannon falls, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020 at the Gardens at Cannon Falls.

Helen Kay Berquam was born on June 24, 1945 in the Sogn area, the daughter of Helmer and Gladys (Flom) Berquam. She grew up in the Sogn area, attended country school, and graduated from Kenyon High School. She worked for many years for Smead Paper Company.  Helen was very close to her mother, living with her and being her caregiver until she passed away in 2001. They had many happy times together traveling all over, including three trips to Norway. She was an active member of Urland Lutheran Church and often helped in the kitchen for various events. She enjoyed dancing and ice skating in her younger years.

Survivors include her siblings Lois Burdick, Gloria Peter, Ione Lundell, Gerhard (Marion) Berquam, and Donald (Glenna) Berquam; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harland, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

Craig “Red” Kolstad, age 67, of Faribault, MN, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019, following a nearly two-year journey with cancer.

Interment will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Randolph, MN .

Craig Allen was born on October 25, 1951, in Red Wing, MN to Vernon and Marilyn (Berg) Kolstad. He graduated from Randolph High School, class of 1970. He became known as Red and was a member of Laborers Union Local 132, working for many contractors over the years with fencing, tending stone and block, and pouring footings. He was a hard worker and a man of great strength, independent, spiritual, and generous. He loved fishing, gardening, playing cribbage and cards, and coffee.

Craig is survived by daughter Kacie Kolstad; son Cody Kolstad; significant other Tracy Berry; sisters Vernelle (Bill) Valek, Marsha Kitchel (Duane Everson), and ValRae Kolstad; brother Bradley (Jenny) Kolstad; granddaughter Lucy; ex-wife Laurie Kolstad; aunt Elaine Hernke; uncle LeRoy Hedin, several cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Marilyn; cousins Mark Olson, Michael Hedin, Brenda Hedin and Rita (Hedin) Root, and uncles, aunts and grandparents.

Services for Kathy Holen, 61, of Marshall and formerly of Montevideo, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wang Lutheran Church, rural Maynard. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Anderson-TeBeest Funeral Home in Montevideo, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. There will also be visitation at the church for one hour before the service.

She died Friday, March 17, 2017, at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kathy Jo (Lien) Holen was born July 26, 1955, in Granite Falls, the daughter of Robert and Donna Mae (Bakker) Lien. She was baptized and confirmed at Wang Lutheran Church. Kathy graduated from Maynard High School in 1973 and later from Granite Falls Vo-Tech after studying to be a legal secretary. She worked for several attorneys as a paralegal. She was united in marriage with Todd Holen in June of 1988. They made their home in Montevideo. Kathy worked in Willmar at Western Minnesota Legal Services for over 30 years. She lived in Arizona for a few years before moving back to Minnesota. She was currently working at People Ready in Marshall. She enjoyed going for walks and doing crafts. Kathy was very involved with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her mother, Donna Mae Lien of Granite Falls; three sons, Jeremy (Alisha) Lien of Granite Falls, Chad Holen of Benson, and Christopher (Sarah) Lien of Lucan; nine grandchildren, Justin, Kaitlynn, Ashlynn, Seth, Ayla, Mason, Konner, Zoey, and Emily; and two brothers, Stanton (Joni) Lien of Maynard and David (Sue) Lien of Maynard.

Preceding her in death were her grandparents, Bernard (Alice) Lien and John (Grace) Bakker and her father, Robert Lien.

Pam Skluzacek, 50, of Montgomery, died Thursday, November 7, 2013 at her home in Montgomery. Visitation will be held Friday, November 15, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 A.M at Vang Lutheran Church in Dennison. Burial will be at a later date.

Pam was born on December 9, 1962 to Larry and Anita (Rank) Soine. She graduated from Burnsville High School. She was the owner of Pams Bake Shop and was a homemaker. She was united in marriage to David Skluzacek at Vang Lutheran Church in Dennison in May of 1990. She was a gourmet cook, loved reading, loved cats and dogs and was a foster mother.

She is survived by parents; husband; David Skluzacek, daughter; Chelsea Skluzacek of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and sister; Lisa (John) Lees of Denver, Colorado.

Pam is preceded in death by son Noah, grandparents and friend Cindy Dozier.
