In the 1870 census, he was Ingrebit Oleson, a farmer in Kickapoo Twp, Vernon County. The household consisted of Ingrebit, 46, Sophia, 47, Anna, 20, Amanda, 17, and Ole, 14.

In the 1880 census, he was Engelbert Wedwick, age 55, a farmer in Kickapoo Twp. He had remarried and his wife was now 34 year-old Susan. Living with the family was Ole Wedwick, Engelbert’s son from his earlier marriage, and Andrew Nelson, age 14, “brother-in-law.”

In the 1900 census, he was a widower again and living in Kickapoo Twp with his son Ole.

Ingebrigt married Sophia Monsdatter EIKUM on 25 Apr 1849. Sophia (daughter of Mons Monsson EIKUM and Astrid Kristensdatter) was born in 1823; died about 1875 in Vernon County, Wisconsin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The 19 year-old Thomas Peterson, “nephew”, was living with her father and brother in Kickapoo Twp in the 1900 census.

In the 1905 state census, she lived with George and Thomas on a farm in George’s name in Liberty Twp, Wisconsin.

In the 1910 census, she was the head of household on a farm she owned in Liberty Twp. The rest of the household was George, Thomas, and her brother Oley Wedwick.

Mabel E. Lawton, 87, of Phoenix and formerly of Viroqua, died Aug. 22, 1994 at J.C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.

Mabel was born in Vernon Co. May 25, 1907 to George and Alice (Peterson) Guist. She attended Vernon Co. Normal School and taught for 10 years. Mabel was united in marriage to Dr. James G. Lawton June 7, 1936. They lived in Viroqua and were members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Mabel was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Literary Society, Kiwanians and served on the Red Cross Board. Dr. Lawton died Dec. 20, 1991. Mabel went to live with her daughter in Phoenix in March 1992.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Luke of Phoenix; her son, Larry (Sheila) Lawton of Los Angeles, CA; four grandchildren; a sister, Celia Guist of Viroqua; two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Cochran of Phoenix and Kathryn Lawton of Sparta; nieces and nephews.

In addtion to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Loren Luke; two brothers, Thomas and Lawrence Guist and four sisters, Allie Ward, Helen Hill, Clara Erickson, and Bertha Guist.

Seward Ward, 81, of La Crosse, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.

He was born in rural Readstown on Feb. 28, 1923, to Raymond and Allie Ward. When he was at a young age, his parents moved to the Chicago suburbs of High Lake, West Chicago, Wheaton and Warrenville. His father worked on a commuter railroad. Seward attended grade school there. After 10 years in Illinois, his family returned to Wisconsin, where Seward finished grade school and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1942. After high school, Seward enrolled in Madison Vocational School, completing a course in aircraft sheet metal.

He entered the U.S. Army in February 1943. He was assigned to the 602nd Engineer Battalion in Camp Buttner, N.C. In January 1944, his unit sailed to England and spent nearly six months there and in Wales for more training. In service, Seward was awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon, the Meritorious Service Unit Wreath, the E.T.O. Ribbon with five battle stars and the Victory Ribbon.

On June 6, 1944, his unit participated in the invasion of France and landed on Omaha Beach. His unit did see service in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany and the Netherlands. His unit was caught in the Battle of the Bulge, but managed to escape 20 minutes before the Germans overtook the area.

Upon his discharge from the service in December 1945, he helped his father on the family farm until spring 1947, when he enrolled at the Curry School of Aeronautics at Galesburg, Ill., obtaining his pilot's license. In November 1948, Seward started work for Dairyland Power at the Genoa Station Plant No. 1.

On June 26, 1954, Seward married the former Myra Kraemer of rural Hillsboro. They had two children, Scott and Kevin. Seward and his family have lived in Genoa since their marriage. On Jan. 2, 1986, Seward retired from Dairyland Power after 38 years of service.

He is survived by his two sons, Scott (Vickie Carridus) of Davenport, Iowa, and Kevin of Genoa, Wis; and a sister, Berdyne (Robert) Brocklehurst of La Crosse.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
