    Dear Sister Anna and family
Thank you for the letter I received yesterday evening. According to it our dear sister Siri has passed away. how strange it is in this world, how short our lifetime is, and how important it is for us all to grasp eternal life. Then death can come. When it greats us we fear not but but continue our life in the eternal dwelling that Jesus our crucified and ressurected Savior has made possible for us up in heaven. Praise be his holy name!!!
Mother has been very sick this last year. She has not been down all the time, but up now and then. she has a large amount of heart failure so death can occur at any time. Mother has a strong conviction about resting on the Sabath which is for those who believe in His life and know our hope for forgiveness is in Christ Jesus. He was crucified, died and was buried for us. In order to live with him we must believe.
With us here in Digene all is normal. We are all healthy at this date. Andreas is going to the pastor this winter. so there is just Melvin of my children who is not confirmed. Thanks for the confirmation picture of Della. How pretty she is now. I will send Einar's confirmation picture at Christmas. Einar is a head taller than me. You asked in your last letter about Anton Flaten. He is still a widower and spends a lot of time with his children. He operates a country store.
In your letter you mention Siri's house in town. You must explain a little about how large it is and the rules and regulations for selling it. A person who is always looking after ones own needs will not seek out a legal settlement of an estate, but will try to arrange a deal without any legal authority. Write soon again about this.
Thousands of greetings and Merry Christmas from us all.
    Your brother Eric
PS - Great Sigird and her family for us. Hope she writes at Christmas. Live Well!

    My dear sisters and families!
Thanks for the letter I got from from Anna a while ago when I found out that you, Sigrid, have become so sick that you must stay in bed. Yes, that is sad to hear, but we people must (nok boie) us for that we are subjected to. With sin comes grief and sickness and death according to our catechism instruction. In former times, before death and the grave, it was not so. It is written: And He (Jesus) shall wipe away tear of your sorrow and death shall be no more, neither grief, neither wailing, neither pain shall be more. The first thing is our Book. (Quotes from Hebrews 21,4 and Aab. 21,23)
After these lines were written I got your letter, Anna, and was so distressed that this letter did not reach my dear sister, Sigrid, while she was living. but I have remembered her each day in my prayers, so I believe and hope that Sigrid received the forgiveness of her sins in the lambs blood and now is home with our dear Savior who shall wipe away every tear of your grief. He has saved us. (I'm sorry the letter is so sloppily written. I've had so little time to write.)
Here in Digene everything is normal. we are working with a large number of patients (20) doing farm labor. Three years ago we bought the Nerby forest and land belonging to Oisterholmen for 24000 kroner. So now we have the largest farm in Hedalen. So you understand that we are not out of work. My health is poor. I'm nearly always well. It is my digestion which is causing problems. It constantly aches when I eat. My oldest son Einar is now 23 and has begun working at the Dikemark asilym as a nurse. Andreas is 20 and runs the telephone switchboard for the community. Melvin will be 14 in the fall and will be confirmed in the summer of 1939. He is the last of our children. Yes, it is amazing in this world how children grow up and we adults go back towards the grave. Lucky are those who have confessed their faith in the Savior Jesus and have a strong belief in His coming. In order to be where He is, people have not lived their lives in vain.
Send this letter to your dear brother-in-law and to all their dear children whom I have never met. Let them all read this letter from their oncle and when they have all read it let Anna have it back. May your gracious God bless all of you in your grief over my dear sister's passing away. May God be with us all. His mercy is now with her and her relatives who are now in Jesus' house, meeting again with her as she has now traveled from us.
Heartily greetings from all of us to all of you.

From notes on Anne Marie Digene on the Johnson website.

(As told by Elna Johnson, Fall, 2000) Anne Marie Digene came from Norway with a cousin ( no name known) and traveled to Minnesota to stay with an older sister, Gunhild/Julia in 1903/04. Her father drove her from Hedalen to Oslo with a horse cart. She was just 18 when she came, and pretty adventurous. She came through Castle Garden, where she was checked out for diseases (a story she told for years). She was sponsored by sister Julia. She came to Ellensburg, Washington, and stayed at the Eidal farm. She met her husband-to-be, John David, at Sarah Digene Wold's in their two story house, which is torn down now. She had never seen her sister Sarah (Siri) Digene Belgum Wold, who was 21 years older than her, until she came to the US. Anne's father's brother was the first to come...and that was how Sarah came. Sarah did not move to Ellensburg until after her first husband Belgum died. Anne worked at various jobs around Ellensburg when she first came. (Chris Eidal and Charlie Anderson were friends in Roslyn, And when Anne and John David Johnson were married, they lived and worked at Charlie Anderson's. Later they were sold the 12 acres that is still in the family today, and where Elna, Della, Charlie, and Melvin grew up. The 12 acres was "on the wrong side of the track" for the Anderson farm...

    Notes:

After her younger sister Ann had been in New Market for a year and a half, helping their grandmother Rangdi on the farm, Julia decided it was Rose’s turn. Rose recounted to Evey, “I had been sick. I went to school, and then I got the measles and my eyes got so bad, amd Ma wanted me to go down there then, because she though that would be nice for me. I had to take over the baking and everything, you know, when I came there. I was seventeen. I stayed there a year and a half then and then I came home again. I met your dad, then and he came up and visited us up in Clarissa. And then I went back in the spring to work for Knute. I worked another summer there and then I went home, and then I got married.”

To put Rose’s story in perspective, her sister Ann would have gone to New Market from Clarissa in the summer of 1903 and stayed in New Market until the early spring of 1905. Rose would have gone down to help her grandmother in, probably, the spring of 1907 and stayed there until late summer of early fall of 1908. In the spring of 1909 she went back to New Market to work for Knute (#1687) and went back to Clarissa in the late fall of 1909. She got married a few months later.

According to Evey, “Ma’s name was Rose though people always called her ‘Rosie’, probably because in Norwegian her name would have two syllables: ‘Ro’se’ (with a rolled r) and the e pronounced like an i. Due to a law which was later changed, Ma lost her citizenship when she married Pa and had to apply for citizenship later on with him.”

Rose M. Ellingboe, age 28, of Lakeville in Scott County, was included in the 1918 Alien Registration.

How Ole and Rose met, according to Evey: “Grandpa Thompson and family, including my mother, were by that time living near Waubun in Mahnomen County. When my mother, who was the oldest, was about eighteen years old, she went for a visit and to help out her grandmother Thompson near Webster. While she was there, she met a young man named Adolph Davidson (#13416) who lived near there. Adolph was a friend of my dad, and consequently my mother met him through Adolph. (It seems she once told me that she went out first with Adolph, so I think that is the way it happened.) Adolph and his wife, Inga, were their friends all their married life. Interesting side note: Inga (#11920) was a cousin of Annie, later to be Albert Ellingboe's wife.”

“My dad, being one of the oldest, built a half mile west of the old house when he married my mother. My mother sold our farm and moved into Lakeville, shortly after Pa died. Not far from there, was the area around Eureka Center and the East and West Christiania churches.”

The oldest child. Of Rose’s four sisters, none lived on farms after they were married. One lived in Colorado, one in Illinois, and the other two in Minneapolis. Two of the sisters were childless, one had two sons, and one had only one daughter.

Had to be “renaturalized” as a citizen because she married a non-citizen. This naturalization took place in Minneapolis, U.S. District Court, 4th Division, on November 10, 1937, with Ole’s naturalization. In the naturalization certificate, Rose is described as 5’4” tall, 110 lbs., blue eyes, light brown hair.

In the 1950 census, Rose and Jeanette live on Morgan Street in the village of Lakeville. Rose is a cook’s aid in a cafe.

Rose went to Europe in the summer of 1958. Her trip included a visit to Sweden to daughter-in-law Anna’s relatives. In a letter to Sweden in September of 1958, Anna says: “Ed’s mother is back safely, she had a nice trip. We never thought she would go to Sweden! Thanks to Olle for he was kind to drive her to Östersund. She told us of Olle and Gösta how kind they are and how fun she had with you all. She has now seen Sweden but she don’t know anyone there.”

    A letter he wrote:

    Martin Digene
    Bolhaug
    November 22, 1945
    Dear Aunt Anne Marie
I have been thinking so much about you lately. I was 14 years old when you traveled from America and I remember you so well from that time. Time goes fast and I, myself, am beginning to age. I'm already now 54. Now it is only you of my mother's sisters in America who are living. Yes, concerning us everything is going fine. We have our health so things are fine. We have lived through each year of this last occupation of the country. There are five unhappy and sad years that are now behind us. The German occupation was bad enough to take quite a toll on us. Some of our best people were locked up in concentration camps and prisons, or also were shot. The food supply was miserable and huge numbers suffered from hungry especially in the cities. The bread we had was made of bad oats and barley and poor rye. It was whole meal bread. We didn't enjoy it and would almost throw it up. Then later there were only crumbs, and unhappily we could see only dark days ahead. the common folk could not have good strong coffee. It was sold on the black market for 200 kroner per kilo. For a long time there was no margarine that could be bought, so it was a rough time.
A little before freedom came, during last year's winter 1500 parachutes with war material were dropped down in the Vassfaret which was to be used against the Germans. If this had been discovered, Hedalen would have been obliterated from this world. But, according to God's providence, it went well. Now circumstances are beginning to work themselves out a little. We are actually getting wheat from Argentina and America. So now we have good, fine bread and coffee. (?) It will be well over a year before we can all get a pair of shoes, a gown, or a dress. In the cities there is hardly anything still. (?) the Germans clearly stole everything they found in the country.
About the family news here, I hardly know where to begin. Perhaps Erik has written and told you most of it. He said that he had gotten a letter from you but I have not read it yet so I don't know anything. Halvor Lie is bedridden. His leg was amputated. Gunhild Gronhaug died two years ago. She visited us so often. Her husband, old Halvor, is still living. He is now 86. Halstein and Marit Lie died during the war. Kari Overby still lives but she is very weak. Her daughter, Thonetta, takes care of her. Of the other old people around here, living still are Kari Bullend(sp), Ole Bjorgan, Iver and Marie Sorlie but Ivar and Marie are in very bad shape now.
Down at Digene, Erik's place has truly become a fine manor. You must take a trip to Norway now. You will find that you don't recognize your own home. At Keoveberg just below the top of the mountain that you know, he has built a very beautiful hytte (mountain lodge or cabin). In the hytte he has an English hearth with really pretty material and furniture. In the summer he rents it out to rich Oslo folks, bankers and money changers and other fine folks. He increases his work steadily so now he has at least 25 mental patients. The more he earns, the greedier people are after his fortune.
You have certainly read in the newspapers that all of the Finmark area was burnt by the Germans and the population had to evacuate to the south. From last November 3rd until now we have had 50 of these unlucky people here in Hedalen. They had to flee half-naked and exhausted and have been placed around here and other communities in Ostlandet. I get a little spending money to be the foreman of the resettlement program here. I have had a huge amount of work to do, finding them housing, clothes and food. It is not such a simple task when most of us here in this country have not had new clothes since before the war. We must find old clothes, food, etc. in this effort. They seem to be doing relatively OK. Most of them have traveled back north again to Finmark, but they have a very rough existence. they live in old sod buildings, or ruined buildings destroyed after the Germans were there.
Did you have any sons who were in the war? I hope you are in good health and let me hear from you. I certainly like to get pictures of you and where you live. Margit and her husband have two handsome sons. The oldest, Gubrand, will be confirmed in the fall. The other is 4. Gubrand look very much like the grandfather that he is named after. Marit and her husband have been very economical but times are difficult. Hedalen is much prettier and built up than when you were home. The most beautifully improved farm of all is Digene. And he (Erik) now owns Nerbyskogen, and Oistreholmen. He now has 10 cows and two horses in the stable. Gunhild Marie Lisbraten has been dead for two years. She was so youthful and strong until the last. But she got liver cancer and was not sick for more than a year before she died. What was it that Aunt Gunhild died of? How are things going with her children and grandchildren. I'm sending a little picture of my wife and I and our foster daughter whom we have had since she was 6 years old. She is the daughter to Anton Bakke, my wife's brother. It is taken in front of our house up here in Solhaug. You remember, certainly, the hill on the Overby land. That is where we live.
So now I wish you and your a very merry Christmas. Many greetings from my wife, daughter and me.
    Martin Digene
PS - The old houses on Kloneberg are still standing. Both the Jorenby bua are old. I was there once and saw them!

Regarding Eidal International, from its website:

Eidal International was formed by Roy M. Eidal in November 1943 as Eidal Manufacturing Company for the purpose of producing military trailers for the United States government. After World War II, the changeover from military to civilian trailers was rapidly made. By mid 1946 Eidal was producing off-highway trailers for the oil industry abroad. Eidal trailers hauled the pipe and other materials that built the Trans Arabian Pipeline across more than 1,000 miles of roadless desert in Saudi Arabia. Eidal hauled construction equipment and materials for Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO), and transported drilling rigs to isolated desert areas and serviced these rigs. Eidal transported fuel, food, water, cement, pipe, and housing that permitted oil field crews to live and work in a desolate area.

By 1950, the company was producing fabricated steel for bridges and buildings as well as manufacturing trailers. As the trailer business increased, steel fabrication orders were sought less and less until this business was discontinued completely. For the next decade the company continued with the military trailers business, and to manufacture other military trailers and parts for such equipment. During the Korean conflict, Eidal’s production was directed toward filling U.S. military orders.

As new areas of the world opened to oil exploration, Eidal solicited the business of drilling, exploring and field service firms, and successfully sandwiched military and civilian manufacturing. New areas opened to Eidal. Aside form the Middle East, trailers and components were exported to Australia, Asia, North Africa and South America.

Today, Eidal International through the acquisition of existing companies and the expansion and development of its own product lines Eidal has diversified and expanded and now serves principal markets which include the mass transportation, defense and civilian transportation, oil and gas industries, and military aircraft ground support equipment. In 1991 Eidal produced fifty of its specialized 70-ton heavy-duty transporters for Saudi Arabian Armed Forces.

Eidal major products are lowboy trailers for domestic and overseas customers; military trailers to transport tanks, water, fuel and general cargo; aircraft ground support equipment which include hydraulic test stands, carts, brake testers and retrofit kits for the U.S. Air Force, NATO, and other approved countries; fifth wheels for medium, heavy and severe loads both on-off highway. These vehicles are in service in over seven major cities and national parks in the United States, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Eidal International continues to be a leader in the production of civilian and military trailers, fifth wheels, aircraft ground support equipment and alternative fuel mass transit vehicles.

    Notes:

    May 1, 1967
    Dear Keith and your family,
I first read your letter today and I was glad that there was someone in our family in the USA who wanted to learn Norwegian. Thus we can in this manner hold the connection between our families and that we can tell each other about that which is interesting. Because I know in reality so little about my father's sisters who emigrated to the USA from Norway at the turn of the century during the hard and poor times which were in Norway during that time. The USA was that time as now free times land (translation?). My father's sisters were Gunhild born January 2, 1868, Siri (Sara) Dec 29, 1864, Maria January 3, 1872, Sigrid Jan 15, 1874, Gudbrand Nov 18, 1876, Elsie May 31, 1880, Erik (my father) May 27, 1883, Anne Marie March 4, 1886. Strange it is to think that of these brothers and sisters there is only father who is still alive. He will now be 84 years old this May. His health is quite good; ________ he was in the hospital for a hernia operation that was successful and was away only 8 days. My mother died three years ago. She was then 80 years old. Mother was from Sogn in the West. She was a strong and beautiful woman, whom I miss very much but I am glad we _________ as long as we had. Your father's sister Elna visited us the summer before last. It was a visit we all were very happy about and valued very much. Some difficulty with the language we had, but then it was so fortunate that our __________ son in law Herman was here during that time and he spoke the language, therefore it was surely so lucky. I think you, Keith, are already very able in writing Norwegian. I hope you will write to me again. I am already looking forward with pleasure now to getting letters from you. I have of course read much about your country and seen on television different reports from the USA. A land of adventure where people from all countries of the world emigrated and have now ________though several generations and become one people - one nation. You Keith are the third generation and can be called a genuine American. I am glad that you want to learn Norwegian. I am the next oldest sone of your father's uncle Erik. I am married to Ingegjerd whose maiden name is Sorlie. Her father was in the USA for 5 years before he married Gunhild from Grov (?) My wife also has many relatives in the USA. We have 2 children (daughters). The youngest 20 years Edith shall now in July marry Herman Lia. He is 25 years old and is trained as a electronics engineer and works for the Tanaborg firm in the developmental laboratory. Our oldest daughter 25 years old is at home a works for me as a telephone secretary. I have been working for a long time to gather light on my father's family on father's side. And when I get more together, I believe you also would be glad to have that, which I shall promise to sent you. I should also like to wwrite to your father, but I can't unfortunately in English - but if he will write to me in English then shall my son-in-law read it for us. Your father's grandmother (also mine) Marit Digene died in 1933. I remember her very well. Your father's mother surely has many letters from her. I think you should inquire if there are some who have kept them and you could read these I suppose and in this manner get an impression of her and the _________ which was between the children in the USA and the family here in Norway. The closest ancestor I have here in Norway is a daughter of father's brother Gudbrand. Margit married Tidemann Ruud. So you understand I set a large price on making contacts with my relatives in the USA. I have only one first cousin yet here in Norway on father's side now after my cousin Martin Digene died 2 years ago. He had no children in his marriage. I have 2 brothers. The oldest Einer is residing in Oslo and has 2 children. My youngest brother Melvin is also married and has 4 children.
Give my regards to all your family. Hope you will write to me again. Greetings from Andreas Digene

    Notes:

    Married as Della Marie Johnson.

Della Marie Pedersen, age 100, passed away Wednesday March 27, 2013 in Ellensburg, Washington. Della was born June 25, 1912 in Ellensburg, WA to immigrant parents John David Johnson (Sweden) and Anne Marie Digene Johnson (Norway). She grew up in the Woldale area, named for her Uncle Peter Wold. She was one of the first children to be baptized in First Lutheran Church. At age 11 she was a spectator at the first Ellensburg Rodeo. She attended Woldale Grade School, graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1930 and attended Washington State Normal School while working at the Green Lantern restaurant.

Della married Danish immigrant Marius Pedersen February 25, 1937, and they established a home in Badger Pocket where they raised one son and two daughters on the farm they cleared from sagebrush, starting some of the first crops with the recently completed irrigation system, the High Line Canal. Della excelled at preparing meals for the farm employees; a bonus at the Pedersen farm, well remembered by her children, nieces and nephews.

Della was an active member of the 4K Women's Club, serving as president, the Badger Pocket Home Economics Club, and also active with her husband in the Farm Bureau. She cherished close friendships with Badger Pocket women. After her move into Ellensburg, she hosted many Christian Women's Bible studies. In later years Della enjoyed spending time with her friend Lynette Mann taking daily walks.

Family was important to Della: her whole world was taking care of her family. Each child could count on her life long support. She instilled a strong work ethic and stressed honesty and consideration for all. She believed in higher education and lived to see each child and grandchild graduate from college. Her love for her three children and grandchildren will never be forgotten. Every single one held a special place in her heart. They will be forever grateful for her devotion and the sacrifices she made for them.

Della's family would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Richard Vaughan for his many years of care, and the wonderful care given by Dr. James Wickerath in the emergency room.

She was preceded in death by her husband Marius, and her brothers Charlie and Melvin Johnson, and a special niece, Patsy Johnson Bacon. Della is survived by one sister, Elna Johnson of Ellensburg, a son, Chester Pedersen of Quincy; her daughters Linda Pedersen of Ellensburg and Barbara Mann Rodden (Rick) of Yakima; her granddaughters Linda Mann of Renton, Julie Tobin (Jeff) of Renton, Barb Mann-Paloy (John) of Seattle, and great grandchildren Madelyn, Molly, and Mackenzie Tobin; and Della Anne and Henry Paloy, and several nieces and nephews.

Adella married Marius PEDERSEN on 25 Feb 1937 in Kittitas County, Washington. Marius was born on 10 Nov 1896 in Denmark; died on 14 Mar 1970 in Washington; was buried in High Valley Cemetery, Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  24. 64.  Melvin Augustus JOHNSON Descendancy chart to this point (32.Anne5, 15.Mikkel4, 6.Gudbrand3, 2.Marit2, 1.Lisbet1) was born on 24 Nov 1914 in Kittitas County, Washington; died on 7 Jun 2008 in Washington.

    Notes:

Melvin (Swede) Augustus Johnson passed away Saturday, June 7, in his sleep. He was born in Ellensburg (Woldale district) on November 24, 1914, to immigrant parents, Anne Marie Digene (Hedalen Valdres, Norway) and John David Johnson (Almered Satila, Sweden). He graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1933 and spent his entire life in the valley. He was employed in the lumber industry for 37 years; 33 of those years were for Boise Cascade. He married Lucille Hunt on June 28, 1945. They were life-long members of First Lutheran Church. During their 63 years together they enjoyed many trips throughout the Northwest, especially the Oregon Coast, and Canada. Melvin loved creek fishing (Taneum, Green Canyon, and Salmon la Sac) and in his later years lake fishing at Fish Lake with his niece Linda. He also loved gardening, discussing politics, watching all sports, and raising his farm animals. In later years bird-watching and bird feeding (Audobon Society member) became a favorite past-time. Though Melvin's formal education ended at high school, he continued to surround himself with books. He loved to acquire and read books, and the importance of education was stressed to his family. He was very proud that all four of his children earned a college degree and that all eight of his grandchildren also graduated from college, with several going on to post-graduate work. Having lived through the Depression, like many of his generation, he acquired a great work ethic, a sense of frugality, and perseverance, punctuated by honesty and integrity. In spite of his thriftiness, he was very generous with his various charities. Family was very important to Melvin as witnessed by his strong devotion and responsibility towards them. In addition to his strong relationships with his children and grandchildren, he had an outstanding interest in maintaining contacts with his family members in Norway and Sweden. He also always looked forward to family traditions and events: birthdays, weddings, parades, the Ellensburg Rodeo, and the annual Family Olympics (secretly hoping to win the gold medal in horseshoes or the balloon toss). He is survived by his wife, Lucille; his four children, Keith (Janet) Johnson (Poulsbo), Anne Bounds (Yakima), Patricia (Robert) Bacon (Vancouver), and Laurie Johnson (Olympia); his eight grandchildren Brett Johnson, Maren Johnson, Jennifer Buster, Kirsten Koetje, Courtney Holbrook, Cari Waldal, Drew Stillman and Bryce Stillman; and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters Della Pedersen (Ellensburg), Elna Johnson (Seattle), and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Johnson. The family gratefully acknowledges the special care and assistance given Melvin during this last year: Dr. Donald Solberg, Pastor Dennis Hickman, Kristi Zollars, the staff at the Royal Vista, and other close neighbors and friends. A memorial service celebrating Melvin's life will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church.

Melvin married Lucille Virginia HUNT on 28 Jun 1945 in Kittitas County, Washington. Lucille was born on 20 Aug 1921 in Kittitas County, Washington; died on 17 Jan 2012 in Washington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

After graduating from Ellensburg High School, she earned a B.A. in elementary education from Central Washington College. Her first teaching job was at Fairview School. Most of her teaching career (39 years) was in the Highline School District in Seattle.

Family was very important to Elna. Her seven nieces and nephews, and then their children, were a big part of her life. Any celebration was not complete unless Aunt Elna was present.

Elna loved to travel; she visited countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa. However, her favorite places to visit were Sweden and Norway, birthplaces of her parents. Another passion was the Mariners Baseball Team; she could readily name players and their recent exploits.

Elna's last years were spent at Brookdale Assisted Living. She belonged to the Lutheran Church and was so thankful for Pastor Dennis Hickman's regular visits.

Elna is survived by her nieces/nephews Chester Pedersen, Linda Pedersen, Keith (Janet) Johnson, Anne Bounds, Barbara (Rick) Rodden, and Laurie Johnson. Preceding Elna in death were her siblings Della Pedersen, Melvin Johnson, Charles Johnson, and her niece, Patricia Bacon.

    • Social Security Number: SS# 474 05 9761 issued in MN before 1951
    • Confirmation: 20 Jun 1926, West Christiania Lutheran Church, New Market Twp, Scott County, Minnesota

    Notes:

Seems to have gone by the name Oliver, at least at the time he graduated from high school in 1930. A commemorative plaque apparently given to each of the nine graduates shows “E. Oliver Ellingboe.”

He is listed twice in the 1930 census: at home with his parents and as a farm laborer lodging with the Raymond Hussong family on their farm in Alba Twp, Jackson County, Minnesota.

In the 1940 census, he is living at home in New Market with his parents and siblings. He was a high school graduate and was employed as a mechanic.

Registered for the draft in Shakopee on 16 Oct 1940. He claimed to be self-employed and living with his parents at 2 Lakeville in New Market. The registration card shows that he was inducted on May 4, 1941.

From a write-up of “Old Timer” W.O. Edwin O. Ellingboe in the North Star Guardian, sometime in 1961:

It was May, 1941, when WO Edwin O. “Ellie” Ellingboe, ABRON’s Motor Vehicle Maintenance Officer, volunteered for the draft. Just after Pearl Harbor, he joined the 109th at Esler Field, Louisiana, and went overseas to southern England where he spent 22 months in training.

June 1944 marks the invasion of Europe. The 109th crossed the channel to France during the night in Liberty ships. From Ellie’s ship, trucks were unloaded onto barges to make the landing. Ellie boarded the last barge where he discovered he was the ranking NCOIC. He recalls, “While we were in the channel, both the outboard motors on our barge quit and we started drifting. To make matters worse, we were under attack from German aircraft. Finally, we got the motors started and made our landing. I waited for the last truck to be unloaded. By that time, we were separated from the rest of our squadron so we bunked under the truck until morning when we joined the rest of our outfit.”

At first, Ellie and his men were located at a front line air strip near St. Lo (No. A-9 for the benefit of the other Old-Timers). From there, he continued to move through France with the 109th. “I’ll never forget my first morning in Versailles. I woke up to find a dead Jerry lying almost beside me,” remembers Ellie.

Next came Paris, then a move to Gosselies, Belgium {a part of the Belgian town of Charleroi} - about 35 miles from the Battle of the Bulge. During the winter of 1944, his outfit was on the receiving end of several German bombing raids, including a few attacks by V-1s.

“One evening,” remembers Ellie, “three crippled bombers with full bomb loads landed at our base and skidded into a stockpile of petroleum drums. The crew members got out O.K. but the resulting fire set off all the bombs. That was the best Fourth of July celebration I’ve ever seen.”

The 109th was at Eschwagen, Germany, when the war ended. German aircraft literally poured into the field to surrender rather than land at Russian-held bases.

Next, the 109th was re-assigned to the China-Burma-India theatre of operations. But all those who had sufficient service time (including Ellie) were transferred to non-combat organizations. Ellie spent a short time with the 155th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, then reassigned to the States where he was discharged at Camp McCoy in March, 1947. Ellie joined the Guard as an Air Technician.

South Minneapolis residents, Ellie and his wife, Ann, have two daughters, 10 and 7. Fishing and reading are Ellie’s pastimes.

    Service Number 37028396

Served in the US military in World War II. Enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in May of 1941. Trained at Esler Field, Louisiana, in the 109th Observation Squadron. Assigned to inactive reserve in October of 1941. Recalled to active duty January 28th, 1942 (entered active duty in April). Unit renamed 109th Tactical Reconnaisance Squadron and was in England, Scotland, France, Belgium, and Germany, as part of the Ninth Air Force, until October, 1945.

He arrived back in New York aboard the Queen Mary on September 28, 1945, as a SSgt in the Army Air Corps. The personnel roster shows that the group was destined for Reception Station No. 16 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

In the 1948 Minneapolis city directory, he was was Edwin O Ellingboe, auto repairman, National Guard Air Base in St. Paul. He resided at 3011 32nd Avenue S. That was his address at the time of his marriage to Anna.

In the 1950 St. Paul city directory, he was Edwin O, auto repair, National Guard Air Base. He resided in Minneapolis.

In the 1950 census, mistakenly called Edward, he and Anna lived at 2436 11th Avenue in south Minneapolis in the “rear” apartment. Edwin was a mechanic for “air service.”

    Height 5' 4.5", Weight 135 lbs.

Died of heart disease at the age of 58. First heart attack at age 51 in February of 1962.

Not listed in the index of Minnesota births.

For some reason, SSDI gives his death date as 15 Apr 1969.

He was buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Columbaria Section O, row O, grave 575. Rank: CWO, USAF

    Notes:

In the 1940 census, Art, Margaret, and Richard lived on a rented farm in New Market Twp. Margaret had had two years of college but the census recorded her occupation as housework.

Evey recalls that Art invited Margaret to church with him one Sunday. “The seating arrangement with men on one side and women on the other caused some uncertainty in what to do. They decided to sit together on the men’s side. I thought it looked kind of funny to see Miss Klefstad over there with all the men. She probably wasn’t feeling too relaxed, either. Gradually this segregated seating came to an end at the church.”

From the program at Art’s funeral:

Arthur Raymond Ellingboe was born in Scott County, Minnesota, on August 2, 1912, to Ole and Rose (Thompson) Ellingboe. He was raised on his parents’ farm and attended the nearby country school.

On June 17, 1936, he was united in marriage to Margaret Oline Klefstad. They farmed together in Scott County until 1941 when they bought and ran their own farm in Dakota County, north of Northfield, until 1948. Arthur and Margaret then moved to Northfield and later, in 1952, to their longtime home in Waterford where they raised their two sons. Arthur began working at Dr. Garlie’s Veterinary Clinic as Office Manager and Vet Assistant, retiring in 1977. Not one to stay idle, he then worked at the Northrup King Research Station in Stanton for the next ten years.

Arthur was involved as a volunteer with the Civil Defense Organization in the area and a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield. He and Margaret spent a number of winters in Arizona, largely in Apache Junction. In 1995, they moved to Parkview Manor in Northfield.

Arthur died on Sunday, January 12, 2003, at Abbot Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis at the age of 90.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Margaret, sons Richard (Debera) of Eugene, Oregon, and John (Catherine Cella) of Edina, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sisters Beulah (Lloyd) Luckman of Northfield, Minnesota, Helen Henry of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Evelyn (Gaylord) Horwath of Faribault, Minnesota, brother-in-law John Menne, sisters-in-law Anna and Veola Ellingboe, and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edwin and Oscar, and sister Jeanette. Another sister, Ruby Linderholm, died several hours after Arthur.

In the Northfield city directory, Art shows up in 1950 and 1953. In 1950, his address is shown as 1112 Union Street and his occupation as “Bookkeeper, Adolph O. Garlie.” In 1953, there is a similar entry for that address (including “sp. Margaret”) but there is also one for 1109 Winona Street in which Art is listed as “Asst., Adolph O. Garlie.” Apparently the veterinarian that Art worked for was Adolph O. Garlie (#15744) until 1965 but by 1967 that vet is David A. Garlie.

Sue’s Mother’s father’s CHURCHILL family came to Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington in 1887 from Oregon. O.H. Churchill had gone to California from Kentucky at age 10 in 1851. His wife was Amelia Catherine HOUSER whose family came to Kittitas County in 1868 from Pennsylvania. Another booklet covers the REED family from Ohio.

  29. 104.  Patricia Ellen JOHNSON Descendancy chart to this point (64.Melvin6, 32.Anne5, 15.Mikkel4, 6.Gudbrand3, 2.Marit2, 1.Lisbet1) was born on 6 Nov 1950 in Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington; died on 1 Oct 2011 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington.

    Notes:

Diagnosed with ALS in January of 2010.

Surrounded by family, Patricia Ellen (Johnson) Bacon, 60, serenely passed on to a better life October 1, 2011. Patsy fought a most courageous and dignified battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease); her strength and grace were inspiring.

Patsy was born on November 6, 1950, in Ellensburg, WA, to Melvin (Swede) and Lucille (Hunt) Johnson. She was the granddaughter of long-time Kittitas Valley residents J.D. and Anna Johnson and Charles and Alice Hunt. She graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1969, and from Central Washington University in 1973, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She later earned advanced credits in library science.

On March 27, 1971, Patsy married her high school sweetheart, Robert Bacon. Together, they set up residences in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Spokane, Washington but have lived the majority of their 40 years together in Vancouver, WA. To this union were born two daughters, Courtney and Cari. Patsy worked for over 25 years as a medical librarian for Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver.

Family, immediate and extended, was very important to Patsy as evidenced by the numerous sleep-overs by her grandkids, the many holiday traditions , family biking, fishing, tennis, trips to the beach, etc. And then there were the annual Family Olympics which she so looked forward to with her siblings, nieces and nephews. Patsy was the glue and cheerleader for her extended family and certainly the organizer for many family gatherings. She was such a wit; we will miss those gatherings filled with laughter. Patsy had a very caring, compassionate way and readily designated herself to be temporary caregiver for her parents following surgeries.

Patsy had a great zest for living, enjoying nature as much as people. She nursed fallen squirrels back to health and enjoyed watching their lives in their 'squirrel condos' placed in her yard. Patsy enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and walking her dogs. She and Bob travelled extensively throughout the Northwest and took several cruises... but it was the van trip through Norway and Sweden in search of her roots which remained dear to her. In the last few months, Patsy used her iPad extensively both for social networking and speaking purposes.

Preceding Patsy in death is her father. Survivors include her husband, Robert, her daughters Courtney (Ty) Holbrook, Portland, and Cari (Al) Waldal, Vancouver, and grandchildren: Tatum Holbrook, Haley Holbrook, Seth Waldal, and Jake Waldal. Also surviving are her mother, Lucille Johnson of Ellensburg, brother Keith (Janet) Johnson, of Poulsbo, sisters Anne Bounds, Yakima, and Laurie Johnson, Olympia, father and mother-in-law, Dick and Clara Bacon of Ellensburg, sister-in-law Midge (Ed) Church, Yakima, and brother-in-law, Greg Bacon, Wenatchee. Others surviving are aunts Elna Johnson and Della Pedersen of Ellensburg; Mary Hunt, Tacoma; and an uncle, Don Hunt of Columbiana, Alabama, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family is extremely grateful for the very caring Hospice volunteers that made Patsy's last months more comfortable.

A 'Celebration of Life' will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 1:00p.m. in the Health Connection reception room at Vancouver Memorial Hospital (3400 Main St., Vancouver, WA). Memorial donations in honor of Patsy can be made to ALS research by going online to webor.alsa.org and specifying Patsy Bacon as the memorial recipient. Donations can also be sent to ALS Association for OR/WA; 700 NE Multnomah St.; Portland, OR 97232
