He is Ola (Ole) Olsen Reien Magistad (ca 1650-?), I6300, in Jim’s VS. Jim’s notes say that this Ole took over Magistad from his older brother Ole who purchased a Tune farm in Vang in 1725.

dwfrench1 says that there were two Ole Olsen Magistad brothers. The older, born in 1670, married Marit Olsdatter Kvale. That Ole died in 1752 on Magistad.

The younger Ole, again according to dwfrench1, was born ca 1672 and died in 1704.

Her marriage to Anders is not shown, instead her outside-of-marriage liaison with Endre Iversen Ellingbø is shown, a liaison which led to the birth of Marith Endresdatter in December of 1829. In the church book record for that Marith’s birth, Eli is shown as Eli Knudsdatter De Thune.

“Many of these tiny patch farms have now been swallowed up by the landowners, and the cottages torn down. To some of these parcels of land, a bit more ground was added on, however, and sold to small farmers. Such a small farm was the little place called Åsen [the mountain ridge], which now has completely disappeared. [Note: this was written in 1911.] Many young people in the neighborhood have no idea even where Åsen was located. But, when I was a small boy, Åsen was a so-called resting place for all who traveled over Egge Ridge between Vang and Øystre Slidre [Valdres], so that there were often 30 horses standing along the road there at any one time. And, the little cottage was more than packed with drivers on their way home.

“At Åsen lived Andris and Eli, and their son Ola and all three were 'clever people.' And, no matter how little they had, no one ever heard them complain even when they were on the verge of starvation. Ola, who was about as old as I, was a happy and kind fellow no matter how things were, and he was an expert singer. A song written by Peter Dass, called Happy was Halvar on the Ridge, was changed by him into Happy was Andris on the Ridge, and he sang so that it echoed over the valley. Eli, who often sat inside and mended, would 'sneak' out as soon as all the drivers had left and sweep up the little fodder remaining on the ground there, and in this way, the sole cow they had also got something to live on.

“Andris at Åsen was a good worker and good at doing things, no matter what, if he only got a little food in his stomach. Since he was of small stature and thinly built, and often hungry, he often used to say about himself: "It's not my muscles doing the work, it's the food." But, it was amazing how many stones and rocks he moved up there on the ridge overlooking the valley. And, although Andris had toiled until late in the evening [all his life], it was not very long before the place called Åsen was no more.”

William George Estrem, 92 years old, of Scotts Valley, passed away on May 31st, 2022, after contending with Alzheimers dementia for 10 years. He was survived by Shirley Estrem, his loving wife of 59 and a half years.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Estrem of Weiser, ID; brother-in-law, Stanley Conrad of Scotts Valley; niece, Brenda Stack of Ogden UT; nephew, Edward Conrad of Scotts Valley; and granddaughter Téa Hegg of Boll, Switzerland. He is fondly remembered by his son, Conrad and Heidi Estrem of Boise ID; daughter, Kimberly Ann and Aschi Hegg of Boll, Switzerland; grandchildren, Zoé Hegg, Siena Estrem, Rémy Estrem, Kaioa and Tiana Hegg; sister in law, Carol Conrad; and nieces, Debra Clausen, Aleta Leen and Pamela Conrad, and many other friends and family.

William was born on August 29, 1929, in Sacramento, CA, to Ernest and Alice Estrem. He attended Auburn High School, and following graduation in 1947, he owned a bread delivery service providing bread for business in the Tahoe-Donner area. He also continued his studies by attending Placer College. His studies were interrupted by the Korean War. He volunteered to serve in the Air Force. By volunteering, he could choose his placement and serve at Ramstein Air Force base in Landstuhl, Germany. He worked in a pharmacy on the base. He enjoyed exploring central Europe during his leave time in Germany. He was honorably discharged after four years of service and returned to Placer College, now known as Sierra College. From Sierra College, he transferred to Stanford University and completed his degree in Political Science.

William met his wife-to-be, Shirley, while working during the summers inspecting pears in Lake County. In 1962, on November 11th, the two were married at Stanford University and settled in Scotts Valley. For forty years, William and Shirley worked hard to raise the best crop of pears. He spent many years serving on various pear boards to put his Stanford degree to good use. In serving on these boards, he traveled domestically and internationally to learn more about the pear industry. He was the Director of the California Tree Fruit Agreement for many years. He also represented Lake County growers on the Canning Pear Assn. He also served with the North Coast Fruit Agreement. He was the founder and President of the Scotts Valley Water Conversation District. The ranch served as a receiving station for Hunts/Wesson canned foods, where local farmers brought pears to be inspected and sent out to the cannery. At 73, William retired from pear farming and traveled to Switzerland, Michigan, and later Idaho to visit family and enjoy his grandchildren.

William was known for his gentle kindness, quiet calm presence, infinite patience, twinkling eyes and a sweet smile.

Robert Elwin Estrem was born on September, 6th 1925 to Alice Virginia Butler-Estrem and Ernest Melvin Estrem in Sacramento, Ca. He died on October, 24th 2011 at the age of 86 in Richland, Washington.

Robert graduated from Placer High School in 1943 and later joined the Marine Corps. After WWII, Robert graduated from the School of Pharmacy at USC. He began working as a Highway Patrol Officer and later as an undercover narcotics agent for the State. Robert went on to work as a pharmacist in Paradise and several of the surrounding communities. Robert was a licensed pharmacist for 50 years.

In 1994 Robert met Rosa Pardo and the two were inseparable until the day of his death. Up until 2005 they lived in Paradise, and then moved to Weiser, Idaho. In 2010, they moved again to Richland, Washington.

Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting, and considered himself a "purveyor of antiquities".

Robert was loved by his family and will be dearly missed. He is survived by the love of his life, Rosa Pardo, his brother William Estrem and wife Shirley of Lakeport, Ca.; his daughter Karen Estrem-Turgeon, husband Rick Turgeon and Grandchild Brenden Turgeon of Fresno, Ca.; his son, Erik Estrem and wife Micki of White Salmon Washington; his son Lars Estrem of Chico, his Nephew Conrad Estrem and family of Boise Id. and his niece Kimberly and Family in Switzerland.

Ingo Mervin Skjefte was born April 7, 1958, to Lucie Marie (Schreiber) Skjefte and DeWayne Mervin Garland Skjefte on a US Army base in Stuttgart, Germany. Ingo was dedicated to his children and his grandchildren. He was previously married to Debra Dunkley, a citizen of Red Lake Nation, Band of Anishinaabe. Ingo is survived by his children, who were the light of his life, and whom he dedicated his life to: Ingo Mervin Garland, Lucie Ann, Lisa Lee, and Leah Marie, all of Minneapolis, MN; his step-daughter, Tina, his cherished grandchildren: Andre, Shyann, Animikii (Papa's Boy), Ayashe, River Paul; his sister, Lisa, brother, Hardy; and nephew Alonzo.

Gary Beito, age 78, of Las Vegas, NV formally of Granite Falls, MN , passed away on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at The Nathan Adelson Hospice Center.

Gary Melford Beito was born November 5, 1942, the son of Lloyd & Alta (Halvorson) Beito, in Granite Falls. He was baptized and confirmed at Saron Lutheran church on June 16th, 1957. He graduated from the Granite Falls High School in 1960. Gary served his country in the United States Army where he was assigned with the Military Police. He was honorably discharged in January 1968.

Gary married the love of his life Judy JensVold on November 29, 1969, and remained married to her until her passing on January 5th 1999. He worked road construction for Minnesota Valley for a number of years. Gary then returned to farming with his brother David North of Granite Falls. He later was employed as a security guard at Firefly Creek Casino and then worked at the Corn Processing Plant in Marshall for 11 years, retiring in 2010. Gary was a member of the Granite Falls American Legion, where he served as Commander for a year.

After retirement he spent his winters in Las Vegas with his son Nathan and Nathan’s cat Slinky, who would spend most of his time on Gary’s lap. He also enjoyed watching the Vikings every season in hopes that one year they would win the Superbowl.

When it was warm enough Gary would head back to MN to be with his other son Ryan. Gary stayed very active and was always busy working outdoors. Gary took pride in making his properties look nice. When Gary wasn’t working on something he would take Rita’s dog Molly for walks and rides in his truck and both of them visited with neighbors and friends.

Gary passed away peacefully surrounded by family on June 15, 2021, at the Nathan Adelson Hospice Center in Las Vegas. He was 78 years of age.

Gary is survived by his two boys: Ryan Beito (Rita Smith) of Granite Falls, Nathan Beito of Henderson, Nevada, siblings: David Beito (Lorelei Andresen) of Granite Falls, and Paul Beito of Arlington, Virginia; and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Judy in 1999 and siblings: Donna Bruflat, Lou Anne Kling, and Ron Beito.

Paul attended Asbury Country School through the fifth grade. He graduated from the Granite Falls High School in 1960. He was raised on a farm north of Granite Falls along with his five siblings.

Following graduation Paul earned a BA in English at the University of Minnesota in 1965. He taught school in Minneapolis and Rochester from 1965 to 1975. He became a CPA in 1984, after obtaining a Master’s Degree in Accounting from Pace University in New York. He worked for Brout & Company in New York from 1980 to 1984, and for Coudert Brothers starting in 1985. He eventually moved to McLean, Virginia and started a private accounting practice. Later he moved to Arlington, Virginia where he resided until his death.

Paul married Julie Homme in 1966. They divorced in 1971.

Paul was a talented singer and sang at many weddings and funerals. While living in Rochester he played Tony in a community production of “The West Side Story” making his family and friends very proud.

Paul loved to travel and traveled extensively in Europe. In 1966, he met his brother David in Paris. They then traveled by car back to Germany where David was stationed in the Army for 30 months. Paul especially enjoyed taking his parents to Norway in 1973, where they were able to meet Halvorson relatives and visit Beito, Norway.

Between 2011 and 2019, Paul and his partner Jose, traveled every year to different countries including Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Hungary, Norway and Sweden.

Paul also ran in the New York Marathon several times. One time he was accompanied by his nephew Rodney Bruflat.

Paul is survived by his brother David Beito (Lorelei Andresen) of Montevideo, his partner Jose Efrain De la O of Arlington, Virginia, sister-in-law Deanne Beito of Buffalo, brother-in-law Wayne Kling of Granite Falls and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Gary Beito, Donna Bruflat, Lou Anne Kling and Ron Beito, brother-in-law Bill Bruflat and sister-in-law Judy Beito.

Ronald Dean Beito, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Parkview Care Center in Buffalo, MN. He was born on, May 7, 1938, to Lloyd and Alta (Halvorson) Beito.

Ronnie attended Asbury Country School while also helping maintain the family farm. He married Deanne Gale Haats of Maynard, MN, on December 29, 1961. Together they had three daughters.

His initial career began at Thorstad Construction Company in Maynard, MN. He then moved his family to Winsted, MN, where he was employed at Sterner Industries and Scherping Welding. These positions provided the foundation skills of construction and welding, which helped him launch his own company, Beito Welding.

Ronnie took the most pride in his family and work. He was fascinated with airplanes and aeronautics and had an appreciation for Farmall C and Allis Chalmers tractors. He loved tinkering in his shop and teaching others his trade. Often, he returned to the family farm and enjoyed sitting around the kitchen table with relatives, reminiscing about the “good ol days”, telling wonderful, humorous stories. Ronnie was a lifelong learner, always looking for his next invention. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to work hard and to follow their dreams.

Left to remember and love him are his wife of 55 years, Deanne, their daughters: Kelly (Brian) O’Neill, Deephaven, MN, Kristen (Scott) Klein, Buffalo, MN, Jennifer Beito, Dallas, TX: 3 grandchildren; Alexander Otto, Cade and Cormac O’Neill; brothers: Gary Beito, Paul Beito and David (Lorelei) Beito; many nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lloyd and Alta Beito; mother and father-in-law; Bert and Mildred Haats; siblings/in-laws; Billy and Donna Bruflat, Lou Anne Kling and Judy Beito; nieces/nephews: Jill Bruflat, Timothy Bruflat, Matthew Kling, Todd Haats, and Troy Haats.

Nathan Beito, 46, formally of Granite Falls, passed away Friday December 16th at the Henderson Hospital in Henderson, Nevada.

Nathan Allan Beito was born August 9th, 1976, the son of Gary & Judy (Jensvold) Beito, in Granite Falls. He was baptized on October 17th, 1976, and confirmed on October 25th, 1992, at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. He graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1994.

In November of 1994, Nathan decided to serve his Country and joined the United States Navy. After his Graduation from Navy basic training, as a Navy Seaman Apprentice, he received a Letter of Commendation for being a Data Processing Technician Seaman. While stationed onboard the USS Saipan (LHA-Z) he was deployed to the Mediterranean where he visited Spain, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey and Israel. Nathan received several commendations while he served in the US Navy including: The National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Armed Forces Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in February 1997.

Following his discharge, he moved back to Granite and began working at Firefly Creek Casino where he became a Pit Boss. In 1999, Nathan and his brother, Ryan moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where Nathan continued his education and earned an Associates of Applied Science with Honors in Accounting and a Certificate of Achievement with Honors in Bookkeeping. Nathan continued his education at UNLV part-time while working at the job he loved which was at CCSN as an Administrative Assistant. Nathan enjoyed bowling, and in his younger years, he was in many tournaments and won a State Championship.

Nathan loved animals and his life literally revolved around his cat Slinky. Family meant the world to Nathan but trying to get him to come home in the winter to visit was like pulling teeth. Nathan was easy going, he liked to make others laugh and loved face-timing, especially during family gatherings, holidays or just to shoot the breeze, it made him feel like he was here with us. Nathan’s infectious smile and warm heart will forever be missed by his family and friends. We love you Nate!!!

Wayne K. Bestor, 90, of Houston, MN died on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Wayne Kay Bestor was born on Sunday, December 13, 1931, in Bristol Township of Fillmore County, Minnesota. He was raised on the family farm near Granger, Minnesota. He was a 1950 graduate of Harmony High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1954. On September 10, 1955, Wayne was united in marriage to Donna Hermanson. He worked for IBM in Rochester, Minnesota, for several years. Wayne then attended Coleman Technical School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he received his certification as a mechanical draftsman. He then worked for Trane Company as a draftsman for 26 years until his retirement in January of 1994. In his retirement, Wayne enjoyed golfing, woodworking, making gun stocks, hunting, taxiing his grandchildren around, and often visiting his parents in Granger.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Donna; five children: Rosie (Kevin) Paulson, Brad Bestor, Vicki (Grant) Olson, Tammy (Greg) Boldt, and Stacy Vix, all of Houston; twelve grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; five great-great-grandchildren; six siblings: Wanda, Georgia, Verlaine, Dallas (Connie), Cheryl (Tom), and Susie; brother-in law, Roger Hanson; sister-in-law, Naomi Wangen; brother-in-law who Wayne considered a brother, Ben Hermanson; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four children: Allan and three who died in infancy; and by two siblings: Carylann and Garth.

Garth Merwyn Bestor, 79, of Harmony, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

He was born to Verl and Gertrude "Gertie" (Hovey) Bestor in Granger on Nov. 13, 1934. He spent his entire life living in the Harmony/Granger area with the exception of his time spent as an aircraft electrician in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1961. He spent a good deal of his service stationed in Japan. After his service, he worked as a plumber for Broadwater Plumbing and Heating in Harmony, before taking over the business in 1985 and running it as Bestor Plumbing and Heating until he sold it upon his retirement. He married Shirley "Sally" (Sandvik) Engle of Harmony in 1961 and became a loving stepfather to Terry Engle of Harmony, DebRae Sandvik (Engle) of Granger, and Douglas (Mary Jo) Engle of rural Cresco, Iowa. Together with Sally, they had three more children, Ty (Dacia) Bestor of Harmony, Tonya Bestor of McHenry, Ill., and Chad (Jill) Bestor of Kenai, Alaska.

Living in his country home six miles west of Harmony, Garth enjoyed spending his time doing anything outside: hunting, going to the boundary waters to fish in the summer, and, in his later years, playing with his two dogs, Buddy and Sam. He could also be found playing cards with the guys at the Co-op in Granger on a regular basis.

Garth is survived by his two brothers, Wayne (Donna) Bestor of Houston and Dallas (Connie) Bestor of Cresco, Iowa; his five sisters, Wanda House of Spring Valley, Verlaine Wilson of Cresco, Iowa, Georgia Hermanson of Harmony, Cheryl (Tom) Otteson of Decorah, Iowa and Susan (Gerri) Matson of Jefferson City, Mo.; his brothers-in-law, Keith (Betty) Sandvik of Rochester and Roger Hanson of Harmony; his six children; his six grandchildren, David, Jarid (Lindsi) and Travis "TJ" Engle, and Taylor (Kathryn), Whitney, and Blair Bestor; and, most recently, his great-granddaughter, Kymber Luna Bestor (Taylor).

Garth was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sally, his brothers-in-law, Bud Hermanson and Lloyd House, and his sister, preceded in death by section, it mentions a sister, Carol-Ann Hanson; her name should be spelled Caryl-Ann Hanson. Hanson of Harmony.

Caryl Ann Bestor-Hanson age 67, of Harmony, Minnesota, died surrounded by her family on Wednesday, Jan 15, 2014, at her home in Harmony. Funeral services will be Monday, January 20 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony. Interment will follow at St. Matthews Cemetery, Granger.

Caryl Ann was born February 21, 1946 in Granger, Minnesota, the daughter of Verl and Gertrude (Hovey) Bestor. She married Robert Anderson in 1962, he preceded her in death in 1964. She later married Roger Hanson on January 11, 1974. Caryl Ann worked as a Medical Transcriptionist; first in Spring Valley, MN for 8 years, then at the Harmony Community Hospital for 22 years and most recently at Mayo Medical Clinic in Rochester for 13 years. She was a longtime member of Greenfield Lutheran Church and was active in many church activities. Her grandchildren’s activities were a big part of her life, she also enjoyed country music, having coffee and visiting with family and friends.

Caryl Ann is survived by her husband, Roger Hanson of Harmony; 4 children: Kevin Anderson of Granger, James (Lesa) Hellem of Harmony, Jodi (Jerry) Bergey of Lansboro and Tricia (Scott) Heim of St. Charles; 7 grandchildren: Courtney, Josh (Kelsey), Luke, Katrina and Madelyn Bergey, Stacia and Ashlyn Heim; 8 siblings: Wanda House of Spring Valley, Wayne (Donna) Bestor of Houston, Garth Bestor of Harmony, Verlaine Wilson of Cresco, Georgia Hermanson of Harmony, Dallas (Connie) Bestor of Cresco, Cheryl (Tom) Otteson of Decorah, Susan (Gerri) Matson of Jefferson City, MO, and many nieces and nephews. In early 1979 he was sentenced to not more than three years in prison for two charges of aggravated forgery. The forgery incidents, passing forged checks, occurred in May of 1978. In the sentencing hearing, the county attorney noted, in reference to Bestor’s juvenile record, that Bestor had been a “significant problem” in the courts for six years. The county attorney also noted that Bestor had recently been undergoing treatment at a chemical dependency unit (CDU) at the Rochester state hospital while on probabation for a prior conviction in Houston County. He had been kicked out of that CDU after being caught smoking marijuana and was later taken into custody in Iowa.

Arrested for burglary and felony theft in 1981 for a March 31 break-in at a residence in Money Creek, Houston County, Minnesota.
