    Mike’s mother was born in Norway.

    Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917, in Polk County, at which time he was already married. He was living in Star Prairie, Wisconsin at the time and said he was a streetcar conductor for the Twin City Street Car Co. in Minneapolis. He was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and brown hair.

    He was a farmer in Alden Twp, Polk County, Wisconsin, in the 1920 and 1930 censuses.

    In the 1940 census, he and his family lived in Amery in a rented residence (not a farm). Martin worked for the county doing road construction. He had an 8th grade education, his wife had had three years of high school. He made $1300 in 1939. All 8 children were living at home.

    In the 1950 census, he and his family lived in Balsam Lake. Martin worked for the county highway department doing road maintenance. The household consisted of Martin, 55, Gertrude, 50, Wayne, 18, Eugene Norman, 12, Berl Mabry, 21, and Berl’s wife (and Martin and Gertrude’s daughter) Fern, 21. Berl was a clerk in a grocery store, Fern was a stenographer for the county clerk.

    Moved to Washington in January of 2001. Carl moved into the Warm Beach Nursing Home in March of 2001.



    In July of 2011 she went into a nursing home because of a compressed fracture of the vertebrae.

    Murriel Lorraine Johnson was born on July 23, 1922, in Amery, Wisconsin, to Martin and Gertrude Ausen.  She graduated from Amery High School in 1940.  After graduation, Lorraine worked in the dietary department of Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While waiting at the Minneapolis bus depot, Lorraine got to know her future husband, Carl Johnson, who was also waiting for the same bus to return to his hometown of Amery.  The two were married June 19, 1944, before Carl was shipped overseas during WW II.

    For a short time they lived in the San Francisco area close to the Navy base so they could be near each other when Carl’s ship was in dock.  Upon returning to Minneapolis to live, they had two daughters, Peggy and Nancy.  When the girls were in grade school, Lorraine went back to work pursuing a retail career at Powers Department Store in St Paul where she managed different departments until retirement.

    For twelve years, Lorraine and Carl enjoyed entertaining a host of guests in their beautiful retirement home on Balsam Lake, Wisconsin.  In 2000, they moved to the Warm Beach Senior Community to be near their daughter, Nancy, and her family.  Carl entered nursing care shortly after arriving in Washington and died five years later from Parkinson’s disease.

    Lorraine has greatly enjoyed her grandchildren, Thad Johan Nelson and wife, Abby, of Stanwood; and Cherith Joy Lee and husband, Chad, of Lake Stevens and her great grandchildren (Preston, Eli, Julie and Clara.)  Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, and oldest daughter, Peggy Lamb.

    As spelled in the 1930 census form. Living in Montana according to Lorraine in 2001. His wife’s name was Helen A. at that time. He apparently maintained a home in Amery, at least for the period 1998-2002. From 1993-2002, he was living in Bridger, Montana. In 1992, there is a Ruth A Ausen living at the same address.

    He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

    He attended the funeral of his sister Lorraine on July 24, 2017.

    He lived in Billings at the time of her sister June’s death.

    Glen Russell Ausen, 95, passed away Sept. 4, 2019, with his family by his side.

    Glen was born in Alden Township, Wisconsin, on July 18, 1924, to Martin and Gertrude Engel Ausen. He was the fourth of eight children. After graduating from high school in Amery, Wisconsin, he enlisted in the Navy and served on the hospital ship USS Bountiful as a corpsman during WW2. His ship was the first to evacuate wounded from Iwo Jima.

    Following the war, he attended the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. While there he met Ruth Woods, a fellow student who was working at the boarding house where he was living. They were married June 5, 1948, in Webster, Wis. Upon graduation from college, they moved to Montana where they started their teaching careers at Ekalaka. From there they moved to Harlem and he earned his master's degree at the University of Montana. His administrative career took them to Glasgow, Culbertson, Colstrip, Bridger, Deer Lodge, and Wyola.

    Glen enjoyed traveling, hunting, and was a lifelong Green Bay Packer fan. He was proud of his Norwegian heritage, actually liked lutefisk, and taught his children the value of hard work. He was privileged to go on the Montana Honor Flight in the spring of 2015. He spent the last year and a half as a resident of The Springs at Grand Park where he was lovingly cared for by the staff there in addition to the staff at Compassus Hospice.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth (married 46 ears); second wife, Helen (married 21 years); son,Stanley; grandson, Jeremy Sikkenga, and his seven siblings.

    He is survived by his four children: Sheila (John) Sikkenga of Sheridan, WY; Sandy (Dick) Taylor of Billings; Sam (partner Lori Hodges) of Billings and Steve (Deb) of Park City. In addition he is survived by his 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grand-children, and one great-great grandson. They all agree he was tougher than woodpecker lips.

    Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred next to his wife Ruth. There will be a graveside memorial service at the Bridger Cemetery on Thursday, September 12, at 3 p.m.

    Lillian “June” Fossum, 92, formally from Frederic, Wisconsin, died January 22, 2019, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease at Christian Community Home of Osceola.

    June Ausen was born on the family farm in Alden Township near Wagon Landing, Wisconsin, on June 13, 1926 to Martin and Gertrude Ausen. In 1934, the family moved to Amery where June lived until she graduated from high school in 1944. She then attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison where she earned a degree in English in 1948. During her time at college, she met a sailor named Jens Fossum and they were married a month after her graduation. The couple moved to Jens’s home town of Frederic where they resided until moving to Osceola in 2016.

    June was a high school English teacher at Centuria for the first few years of her career, later taking a job at Frederic where she also taught speech and family living. While at FHS, she took a record number of students to state in forensics and also served as advisor to the student newspaper and the cheerleading squad. She retired from teaching in 1988, always regretting that she had not continued to work longer in the job that she really loved.

    June was a voracious reader and loved playing cards, especially 500 and bridge. She was also an avid walker and a skilled dance partner to her equally smooth husband. She was an active member of the Frederic Lioness club and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, where she served as secretary to the Ladies Aid for over 30 years. She also traveled extensively during her lifetime and was a classy dresser and a fantastic cook. But above all she was a wonderful wife and mother who was loved and appreciated more than she ever knew.
    She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Jens Fossum; as well as her 3 children: Bruce (Sandy) of Rochester, MN, Brian (Linda) of Eau Claire, WI, Karen (Tim) of Osceola, WI; her beloved grandchildren: Croix, Carson, Colter and Carl; step-grandchildren: Sam, Britta, Sloane and Caitlin; sibling, Glen Ausen of Billings, MT; her former card playing partners in Frederic and wherever else someone was shuffling a deck.

    June is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Vernon, Wayne and Gene; sisters: Isabelle, Lorraine and Fern; along with several other relatives and host of lifelong friends and former students.

    A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Frederic.

    Fern Elaine Mabry, 86 of Forest Lake, Minnesota passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Windy Acres Assisted Living Center.  She was born October 2, 1928 in Amery, Wisconsin the daughter of Martin and Gertrude (Engel) Ausen. 

    Fern grew up in Amery and the Balsam Lake area.   She married Berl Mabry on July 6, 1949 in Balsam Lake and later moved to Forest Lake, Minnesota in 1958 where together they raised 4 children.  Fern retired from Midway Family Physicians in St. Paul as a medical secretary.  She loved to dance and was a big fan of Elvis.

    Fern is survived by her devoted friend and former husband, John Norton; three sons, Dennis (Andrea), Dana (Cheryl), Dean (Rhonda), one daughter; Lori (Ross Carlson) Mabry-Pasch, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Also survived by two sisters; Lorraine Johnson and June Fossum; one brother, Glen Ausen other relatives and friends.  She is preceded in death by her first husband Berl, Parents, three brothers; Vernon, Wayne, Eugene Ausen, one sister; Isabelle Johnson and one grandson; Christopher Mabry.

    Wayne S. Ausen passed away peacefully on September 3, 2013 at the age of 81 after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Mr. Ausen served in Korea and Vietnam and retired from the Navy in 1971. He then worked in civil service at North Island. Mr. Ausen was preceded in death by his wife Betty. They had been married 54 years. He is survived by his son Norman, daughter-in-law Valorie, and grand- daughter Amy, all San Diego residents. He is also survived by his brother Glen of Montana, sisters June and Fern of Minnesota and sister Lorraine of Washington State. A military service will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery

    Accidentally shot and killed by his father. Mike was handing a .22 caliber .22 calibre target handgun to Eugene when the gun discharged. The bullet shot off one of Eugene’s fingers before entering his chest. The young man died in his brother Wayne’s car as rushing to the hospital in Amery. The accident occurred at the Balsam Lake village dump where the three Ausens were target shooting.

    Michael was born January 4th, 1943 the son of Vernon and Marvel Ausen. He married Pamela Peterson (Bowman) in May of 1995 in Billings, Montana.

    Michael had special memories of Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, where he spent summers enjoying time at the lake at his grandparents’ house. He grew up in Brooklyn Center with his brother Bruce, and two sisters, Gale and Debby.

    Michael worked as a real estate developer and salesman in Shakopee, Minnesota, and was a business owner and mechanic in Billings, Montana. Michael enjoyed camping, hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing. He was active with the Boy Scouts for many years. After retirement he enjoyed travelling across the country visiting friends and family.

    Michael was proceeded in death by his parents, Vernon and Marvel Ausen, and his wife Pamela Peterson (Bowman) Ausen.
    Michael is survived by his 3 siblings, Bruce Ausen, Maple Grove, MN; Gale Ausen, St. Louis Park, MN; and Debby (Pete) Hayda, Edwards, CO; his 6 children Jason (Haley) Ausen, Covington, WA; Phillip (Heather) Ausen, Ramsey, MN; Woody Ausen; Andrea (William) Whisler, Decatur, IL; Eric (Holly) Bowman, Lusby, MD; and Ryan (Tessa) Bowman, Boise, ID; 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

    Inurnment will take place in Montana at a later date.

    Larry Raymond Johnson was born in Amery Wisconsin on June 8, 1945, and passed away unexpectedly at the age of 74 on December 11, 2019, in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. 

    Larry grew up during the golden age of the American family farm, being raised on a dairy farm in Amery, Wisconsin, by Raymond and Isabel Johnson. Upon completion of high school, Larry attended the University of Wisconsin River Falls and later UW-Madison, studying Mechanical Engineering. During his college years he was an active member of Alpha Gamma Rho.

    In 1965 he met Lenore Lenz and they were married during a blizzard on December 28, 1968. Larry would go on to receive his Masters in Agricultural Engineering from UW-Madison and then later his MBA from the University of Detroit. Upon completion of his Masters in Engineering, Larry worked for Ford Motor Company’s Division of Agricultural and Construction Equipment in Troy, Michigan. At that time, Larry and Lenore bought their first home in Birmingham, Michigan. It was during this period God led them to the community of Ferndale Free Methodist Church. In 1980 Larry and Lenore welcomed their first child, Gregory, on October 23. Shortly afterwards Larry and his family moved to Fort Atkinson.  He took a job with Butler (later J-Star), an agriculture equipment manufacturer. On April 26, 1983, they welcomed their second child, Aaron. Larry would go on to work for Weiler & Company in Whitewater and then later VISTA Training in Waterford. Larry started his own consultancy, Oakwood Engineering LLC, and worked with clients globally in product safety. He received many professional awards during his career including a Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin College of Ag & Life Sciences, Career Achievement Award from ASAE Wisconsin Section, and a Distinguished Service Award from The University of Wisconsin College of Engineering.

    Outside of work, Larry was a beloved husband, father, and friend. He was very active in his local church, Faith Community. Larry was also an avid hiker, downhill skier, gardener, wine maker and coffee roaster. He loved to solve problems and was ever eager to take on challenging projects.

    Larry is survived by his wife Lenore, sons Greg (Shara) Johnson, Aaron (Amber) Johnson and grandchildren Archer and Amory Johnson.  He is also survived by siblings Lynda (Jerry) Overman, Jan (Mel) Wondra, and Jerol (Jane) Johnson and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
