    • Service number 328 82 84. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Fargo on January 3, 1941. As a Seaman, 1st Class, assigned to the U.S.S. Antares, he was a witness to, and survivor of, the attack on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. He remained assigned to the Antares until November of 1942, when he was a Coxswain assigned to the newly-repaired ocean-going tug U.S.S. Vireo (AT-144). He was a BM2c on December 1, 1942. He remained with the Vireo throughout 1943, during which time he participated in resupply operations for Guadalcanal. The Vireo was attacked by dive bombers in April of 1943 and participated in the Battle of Kula Gulf in July of 1943. On January 11, 1944, he was assigned to the newly-commissioned U.S.S. Hoggatt Bay (CVE-75), an escort carrier also known as a “baby flattop.” This ship carried aircraft and crews to Pearl Harbor from the U.S. through March, engaged in anti-submarine warfare in May and June, and supported various missions around the Phillipines and New Guinea for the remainer of 1944 and into 1945. In early January, on the way to Lingayen Gulf, the crew of the Hoggatt Bay fought Japanese suicide planes. By mid-1946, Clarence was assigned to the U.S.S. Palau (CVE-122).

      Referred to in a 2005 article on Pearl Harbor in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal as “Elizabeth Township native Clarence Lyngstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Poynter.”

      Clarence Orville Lyngstad, 79, a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, at the Home. He was born Sept. 16, 1921, to Carl and Martha (Olson) Lyngstad in Elizabeth Township, rural Elizabeth. He was raised and attended school in the Erhard area. He joined the Navy in 1940 and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II until 1946. On June 29, 1946, he married Doris Toso Bloch in Norfolk, Va. They lived for a few years in California and Fergus Falls. Then they lived for 20 years on South Turtle Lake near Underwood. Clarence worked as a painter for several years before going to work for the city of Fergus Falls. Clarence was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, VFW Post 612 and the American Legion all of Fergus Falls. He loved woodworking, gardening, picture framing and ice fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Esther (William) Muller, Myrtle (Wallace) Murphy and two brothers, Clifford and Marvin Lyngstad. Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters, Lynette (Roger) Hutchins of Fergus Falls, LaDonna (Mandus) Olson of Alexandria; one son, Deland (Sharon) Bloch of Savage; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence (Henry) Merz of Fergus Falls and several nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation: Monday from 4-8 pm with family present from 6-8 at the Olson Funeral Home, and resumes one hour prior to the services at the church. Service: 2 p.m. Tuesday October 17, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. Clergy: Rev.
