Called Bert Engel in the 1910 census. Living on a farm he owns, with a mortgage, in Wheaton Twp, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, in the 1910 census. The household consists of Bert, 36, Francis, 33, Fern, 11, Mildred, 6, and Raymond, 1 and some months. Francis has had 5 children, 3 still living. The couple has been married 12 years. In the probate records for his father’s estate, he is listed as Bert Engel, son, Town of Wheaton, Wisconsin. He registered for the draft as John Bertram Engel in Chippewa Falls on September 12, 1918. He gave his age as 45 and his birthdate as January 9, 1873. His address was Rt. 6, Chippewa Falls and he gave his nearest relative as Frances Marcks Engle (sic) of the same address. He is described as tall, medium build, with blue eyes and brown hair. He is still Bert and is still farming in Wheaton Twp in the 1920 census. He was town chairman. In the 1930 census, Bertrum Engel, his wife Frances, and their sons Raymond and Ford, are farming in Wheaton Twp. There is a Sarah 1914-1914 (died at 5 weeks) buried in Oakwood who could be a child of William or of John. Dana Trager’s Philliber Family Tree ascribes Sarah to Bert and Frances.
