  Notes	Massachusetts Town Birth Records show that this Horace W Hand was born 1 November 1848 in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, to George W. and Chastina Hand. In the record of his marriage to Eliza Marshall, his occupation is shown as brakeman. In the 1870 census, as H W Hand, he and Eliza were living in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada. Horace was an engineer. Living with them was a Hattie Bailey, 21, seamstress. In the 1880 census, H W Hand and family live in Gold Hill, Nevada. The household consists of H. W., 31, an engineer, E.A., wife, 31, Walter, 7, and A Marshall, 63, mother-in-law. At the time of the census, Walter is shown as “visiting in Mass.” In the 1878-1881 Bishop’s Directory of Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City, Carson City, and Reno, Horace W Hand is shown as an engineer for (or at) Crown Point and he resided at 81 Tunnel Toll Road. He is the only Hand in Gold Hill. In the 1900 census, he and Isabel and Myrtle live in Gold Hill. He is shown as born in November of 1850. Living with them is Lillian Golding, 21, “niece”, and her two (twin) daughters. In an article about his wife’s serious operation in August of 1909, he was described as the chief engineer of the Ward shaft in Virginia City. In the 1910 census, he and Myrtle live in Virginia City. His occupation is hoist engineer for a quartz mine. Living with his daughter Myrtle and her family at the time of the 1930 census. According to that census, Horace was born in Massachusetts, his father in New Hampshire, and his mother in Scotland. Newspaper articles concerning his life and death do not mention his son or his first wife.
