Came to this country in 1893 according to the 1900 census. At that time (June 17), he and his family lived in Colburn, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Called Edward in the 1900 census.
Called Albert in the 1910 census. In that census, he is a farmer and came to this country in 1890.
Still farming in Chippewa county in 1920, not far from Mons Ekum (#838).
Still there in the 1930 census. Clement is still home and living with his parents. William may too although he is listed as a separate head-of-household just above Albert.
By August of 1942, his farm was for sale, or at least 80 acres of it.
On September 17, 1943, Delvina Mercier, “owner,” auctioned her father’s farm. The advertisement described its location as “8 miles N of Boyd on D and 12 miles S and E of Cornell on D.” The auction was to be of 18 head of cattle, 50 chickens, tons of clover, timothy, and straw, 200 bushels of oats, and many items of machinery. By August of 1944, he and his wife lived in Stanley.
Among the out-of-town relatives attending his funeral in September of 1944 was a Miss Adeline Mercier of Chicago.
From C.T.:
Albert's parents were Octave Mercier and Marie Adelina Boulard. Albert was born in Canada in 1871. The 1881 Canadian census places Albert Joseph Mercier in St. Jacques, Montcalm, Quebec, he was 10 years of age. The 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census places him in Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
In March of 1891, Albert entered the United States at Port Huron. Albert made his Declaration of Intent, 2 November 1896. He made application for citizenship 23 September 1913. Albert Joseph Mercier received citizenship 18 April 1914. It was recorded at the Circuit Court of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Petition and Record Vol 4 Dec Vol F Pg 459 NO 341 36.
Albert worked as a lumberjack at Ruby Sawmill. Albert was a foreman for a logging company, owned by Joseph (Joe) Bernier, in Colburn, in the late 1800's. Albert's brother-in-law, (Ludger Beaudin) worked for Bernier driving steers, which were used as much as horses in those days, to skid out the logs. Albert was also a skilled carpenter and built several homes, schools and farm buildings in the Colburn area.
Albert and Agnes were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Boyd, Chippewa, Wisconsin. Father Nau officiated. Witnesses were Ludger Beaudin and Mary Beaudin, brother and sister to Agnes Beaudin. Their faith was a grounding element in their lives and those of their children. They were active in St. Joseph Parish during the tenures of Father Nau, Father Colling and Father Leuther.
Albert went to Michigan to look for work but returned to Wisconsin to dairy farm. Albert and Agnes farmed in Colburn, south of Pike Lake Road. Their 10 children were all born on the family farm, not far from the Pike Lake School, no longer standing, on D and Pike Lake Road. The Pike Lake area is between Cornell and Boyd. Albert and Agnes were Godparents to Marie Boudia (Beaudin). Marie's parents were Peter Beaudin (brother to Agnes) and Elizabeth Deutsch Beaudin. After the family farm was taken over by Delvina Mercier (daughter), Albert and Agnes moved to Stanley, Chippewa County, Wisconsin. Albert was trying to renovate the house that he and Agnes purchased. He died of massive heart failure while digging up a sewer pipeline. At the time of his death he was living on Barber Street. His obit said that he and Agnes had moved to Stanley seven weeks before he died.
Both Albert and Agnes are buried at St. Joseph Cemetery, Boyd, Chippewa County, Wisconsin.
