Her obit in the September 2, 2008, edition of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal:
Viola Pauline Bye, 100, of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Pioneer Retirement Community.
She was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Pandora, Iowa, the daughter of Charles John and Agnes Rachael (Johnston) Beller. She was nine years old when the family moved to a farm near Carlisle, and attended District 111. She then boarded in Fergus Falls to attend high school. She worked for the Dahl family who owned City Bakery and as a waitress in the Kaddatz Hotel and the Christiana Restaurant.
On March 3, 1929, she married Julian Hubert Bye in Toledo, Ohio. Viola met him at a dance while he was enrolled in Park Region College. After their honeymoon, they moved to Fergus Falls. During The Depression, they moved to Michigan to work and returned to Fergus Falls in 1935. She also worked as a head cook at Skogmo Cafe in 1958, and at the Normandy Cafe from 1965 to 1970. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls.
Her hobbies included spending time at their cottage on Wall Lake where they enjoyed swimming, fishing and the great outdoors, and also gardening. She loved to bake, prepare meals for family and the picnics at the Phelps Mill County Park.
She made several trips to Michigan to visit her three brothers.
God gave us a mother and grandmother for many years to learn from her. We learned of the love of family, of God, the world and how to keep her passions, memories and treasures alive to pass down to generations to come. Her stories will be told and retold. The legacy of Grandma Bye will continue to live on.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Julian in 1983; their daughter, Delores Anderson in 2001; her brothers, Orville, Verle and Gerald; sister-in-laws, Ethel, Florence and Alma; a son-in-law, Jerry Anderson; and many extended family and friends. Survivors include three children, Mary (Virgil) Albertson and Alan (Betty) Bye all of Fergus Falls, and Russell (Bonnie) Bye of Underwood; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.

Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls. Clergy: Revs. Marv Abramson and Harry Olson. Burial: Vukku Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Doran.
