- Called Julietta or Juliaetta in the 1880 census.
Her obit said that she and Frank were in North Dakota between 1903 and 1911. Etta was a Methodist. She was a charter member of the Pepin Lakeside Camp 3184 of the Royal Neighbors of America. (This was basically a women’s social organization, that later became a life insurance company targeted towards women.)
Etta Engels and family were living in Garfield township, Polk County, on January 13, 1920, the day they were visited by the census "enumerator", Hazel Wolf.
Etta is shown as 41, a widow, and a farmer. She is shown as born in Wisconsin but her father was born in Germany and her mother in Pennsylvania.
Children living with her are: Helen, 21, born in Wisconsin, Shirley (occupation:farmer), 16, born in North Dakota, Viva, 14, also born in North Dakota, Dorothy, 6, born in Wisconsin, and Donald, 3, born in Wisconsin. (Gertrude, the oldest, was married and gone by 1920.)
Donna says: “Etta was a young widow..You know that she lived near my grandparents and she and grandma Marta were friends. Etta was mom's Bible School teacher and taught at her house. Poor Etta had to raise kids alone and keep that farm going which she did.”
Shown as Etta J. Engels in the 1930 census. Living with her at that time were Shirley J., his wife, Letha or Latha R., their daughter Margerie A., Etta’s daughter Viva E., Etta’s daughter Dorothy, and Etta’s son Donald F.
Etta and Dorothy and Donald lived in Garfield Twp, Polk County, in the 1940 census. Etta owned her house, the same house everyone lived in in 1935. The property’s value was $1500. They also had a school teacher living with them as a lodger.
Etta was a half-first cousin of the North Dakota senator Milton R. Young.
