She escaped a fire at her 2nd floor apartment in Willmar in June of 1934 along with her mother-in-law, daughter, sister-in-law Lillian, and mother’s brother Duane when a neighbor boy named Vernon Brogren put a ladder to the window and got them all out before the fire department arrived. A fire in their kitchen had spread to the stairways, cutting off their escape.
