- In the 1950 census, he and his wife and daughter were living with Selma’s parents at 419 S. Washington in Viroqua. Adrian worked doing chores on a farm. Selma was a clerk in a retail store.
Theresa mentions, in her 1974 birthday card to Cora, “I always fix oysters for Adrian on his birthday. Karl and Sally don’t eat them -- she can’t even stand to look at them -- so I fixed meat loaf and scalloped potatoes too.”
Adrian Sherry, 87, of Onalaska, died Jan. 20, 2014, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born on the family farm near Readstown to Gerhard and Mable (Swiggum) Sherry on Feb. 26, 1926. Adrian was baptized and confirmed at North Kickapoo Lutheran Church. He attended the Sherry School and graduated from Readstown High School, Class of 1943. Adrian grew up on the family farm, learning to raise horses and dairy cattle. On Dec. 4, 1947, he married the lovely Selma (Sally) Ekum in Viroqua. Adrian and Sally began dairy farming in 1951 until 1963, at which time they moved to Viroqua. Adrian sold insurance and managed auction sales for the State Bank of Viroqua. In 1975, Sally’s career took them to Waterloo, Iowa, where Adrian enjoyed success as a top real estate salesman and broker until 1991, when he and Sally moved back to Wisconsin to retire. Adrian and Sally enjoyed travel and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Adrian was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in La Crosse.
Adrian had a lifelong love of quarter horses and was a top competitor in western horse shows during the 1960s and 1970s. He later judged pleasure and reining classes. He always kept a beautiful yard and garden. Adrian loved to play cards with friends and family and had a keen sense of humor and always had a story to tell and a sparkle in his eye.
Adrian is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (David) Wendel of Eau Claire, Wis.; son, Karl (Joyce) Sherry of Minnetonka, Minn.; grandchildren, Matthew (Phronsie) Weirauch of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Elizabeth (Mark) Haley of Phoenix, Ariz., Ned Sherry of Seattle, Wash., and Reed Sherry of Minnetonka. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Dylan Claire Haley of Phoenix and Spencer Weirauch of Manhattan Beach.
