Clifford Milford drowned with his cousin Ivan “at Black Bottom” on December 23, 1934.
From the Vernon County Broadcaster, December 27, 1934:
Drowning of 2 Boys Saddens Community
A duo-tragedy occurred last Sunday afternoon at half past three when two small boys, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl and Mr. and Mrs. Odin Olson, met death by drowning in the upper Black Bottom creek.
The two five year old boys were playing on the ice of the creek, which was exceedingly thin at that place. It is supposed that the ice broke while they were at play, and the shock of the chilling water stupefied them to such a degree that they were unable to reach the bank. The water was four feet deep at the place where they were drowned.
They were discovered half an hour later by the other Nundahl children, who ran for help. Mrs. Nundahl, with the aid of two childen, rescued the bodies from the water and summoned assistance from a neighbor.
The entire community combines in offering the Nundahl and Olson families the deepest of sympathy in this period when joy and happiness is so prevalent. Funeral services will be held this Thursday at the Folsom church, with the Reverend Haakenson officiating.
From the Vernon County Censor, December 26, 1934:
Two Lads Drown in Black Bottom
One of the most heart-breaking tragedies that the Censor has been called upon to chronicle in years took place last Sunday afternoon in upper Black Bottom when young sons of Mr. and Mrs. Oden Olson and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nundahl met death in the icy waters of the creek.
The older boys of the two families had gone sliding earlier in the afternoon, and Clifford Olson and Ivan Nundahl, both not yet five years of age, got the same idea and started out with the sled. The first intimation of trouble came when the older boys returned to the Nundahl home and were met by the dog whose frantic agitation finally led them to the bank of the creek where the bodies of the two young lads were found in the water. From marks on the bank it was apparent that the dog had tried to pull them out but failed.
Mrs. Nundahl, although frail and ill and a mother only six weeks ago, plunged into the ice-cold water above her waist to retrieve the bodies. She was prostrated from the shock and grief and her condition was serious for a time. Mr. Nundahl was not at home at the time of the shocking accident.
The double funeral will be held at the Nundahl home near Brookville, and at the Kickapoo church Thursday afternoon, Rev. Haagenson officiating. To the heart-stricken families the most sincere sympathy of the entire community goes out at this Christmas season when their joy has been transformed to bitter grief.
