- The 1895 Iowa state census has him as Lyle Dawson, age 0, living in Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County.
Regular Army, perhaps an officer, according to DHC. This, apparently, was only during World War II.
Registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 in Los Angeles. At that time, he was living at 323 (last digit illegible) North Broadway in Los Angeles. He shows his occupation as bookkeeper for Southern California Edison. He was born in Fredericksburg, Iowa. He lists a wife, mother and (apparently) 8 year old sister as solely dependent on his support. He lists his dependents and the fact that he works for a public service corporation as reasons for exemption from the draft. He indicates that he is married. He is described as tall and slender with brown eyes and dark brown hair.
In the 1920 census, he (incorrectly indexed as Dallison) is Lyle T Dawson, 25, living in the city of Bend in Deschutes County, Oregon. He is a cashier at an electric office. His wife, Bertha P, 23, is a clerk for the U.S. Forestry Service.
An article in the Bend Bulletin in October of 1922 says that Lyle had been in Bend for several months and had left for Portland to make his home.
By April of 1925, he was in Medford, Oregon, where helped organize a Lions Club. A newspaper article said that he was “recently from Longview, Washington.”
In the 1929 San Francisco city directory, Lyle and Bertha live at 646 15th Avenue. Lyle is a credit manager for General Motors Acceptance Corporation.
In the 1930 census, the family was living at 410 North Pickering in Whittier, California, in a home they rented for $47/month. The family had a radio and consisted of Lyle T., 36, Bertha P., 34, and Donald R., 9. Lyle was a credit man in the finance industry. Bertha was a secretary for a lawyer. Lyle’s father was born in Illinois and his mother in Iowa. Lyle was a veteran of the world war. He and Bertha married when they were 21 and 19, respectively.
In the 1934 index of California voter registrations, he was Lyle T Dawson, living at 125-1/2 S Painter Av in Whittier, Los Angeles County. He was registered as a Democrat.
As of August of 1934, he was in Wellington, Smith Valley (near or in Yerington), and registered as a Democrat.
In the 1935 Long Beach city directory, Lyle T Dawson is an accountant living at 2468 Linden Avenue.
In the 1936 and 1938 voter registration indexes for Los Angeles County, he was Lyle T Dawson, living at 433 S Union Dr. He was a salesman and a Democrat.
In the 1937 Los Angeles city directory, Lyle and Irene live at 433 Union Dr. Lyle is a salesman.
In the 1938 Reno, Nevada, city directory, Lyle and Irene live at 524 E 7th. Lyle is an investigator for the U.S. Treasury Dept.
In the 1939 Reno city directory, Lyle and Irene live at 524 E 7th. Lyle is an ivestigator for the U S Alcohol Tax Unit.
As of 10 Jun 1939, he was secretary-treasurer of the Nevada Peace Officers Association.
In the 1940 census, the Dawsons lived in Rosemead in Los Angeles County. Lyle was an investigator for the Treasury Dept. He had had two years of college, Irene was a high school graduate. Five years previously, he had lived in Whittier, Irene had lived in Los Angeles.
In his World War II draft registration, he was employed by the U.S. Treasury Dept.’s Intelligence Unit, Bureau of Internal Revenue. He and Irene and family lived at 1400 Delta Street in Rosemead, Los Angeles, California.
A Captain Lyle T. Dawson is cited in a report on Camp McCoy in Wisconsin as the author, with a 1st Lt. Robert W. Mess, of a report entitled “Report of Visit to Prisoner of War Camp, Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.” This report would have been from the 1943-1944 time frame.
A Captain Lyle T. Dawson is also cited in a book on Italian POWs concerning an inspection he made, as part of the Eighth Service Command, of an Italian POW camp at Hereford near El Paso, Texas, on November 15, 1945. Cited were a report he made to Colonel Joseph R Carvolth, dated 19 Nov 1945, and a “conversation between Captain Dawson and Lt. Colonel Stephen M. Farrand, 17 Nov 1945 on Italian situation.” The former citation, the report, is in “Carvolth papers.” The latter citation, the conversation, is in the National Archives, RG 389.
His obit in the Nevada State Journal in Reno:
Funeral services were held at Montery Park, California, last week for Lyle T. Dawson, former resident of Reno and Lyon County, who died recently in Los Angeles.
A life member of the Nevada Peace Officers’ association, Mr. Dawson was once employed in the Reno internal revenue office. He was later manager of the co-operative mercantile store in Wellington and was employed by a U.S. geological survey unit in Yerington.
A veteran of both wars, he was discharged last May from the Army with the rank of major. At the time of his death he was employed in the U.S. intelligence department in Los Angeles.
He is survived by his widow, three sons, Daryl and Duane of Monterey Park and Donald of Oakland; his mother, Mrs. Loretta Dawson of Whittier, California; two brothers, Colin and Neil of Oregon; and two sisters, Mrs. Marian Knox of Salt Lake City and Mrs. Laura Frazier of Mina.
