Soine, 89, professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota-Crookston School of Soils and Agronomy and a former mayor of Crookston, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Friday at the Presbyterian Home in Arden Hills. Soine, of Falcon Heights, was born in Maynard, Minn. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from St. Olaf College in Northfield and master's and doctorate degrees in soils and agronomy from the University of Minnesota. He was a professor and soils scientist at the Crookston campus from 1942 until he retired in 1974. He specialized in crop rotation and the effects of soil fertilizers on sugar beets, sunflower seeds and other crops, said his son, Richard, of New Orleans. "He became interested in this area because he grew up on a family farm," Richard Soine said. He was manager of the Red Lake Watershed District from 1970 to '79 and a member of the board of managers for the Red River Valley Winter Show, an annual agricultural expo in Crookston. He was a Crookston City Council member and mayor in the mid-1960s. Soine moved to the Twin Cities after he retired. His son said he recalled his father's former boss telling him that he was the "type of person who always got the job done." He was active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston and enjoyed woodworking. In addition to his son, he is survived by his wife, Dora; two daughters, Kathleen McGee, of Salem, Ore., and Barbara Whitmore, of Minneapolis; a brother, Glenn, of Fridley; and two sisters, Lou Ella Nelson, of Apple Valley, and Thelma Ross, of Hopkins.
