  Notes	According to the 1880 census, his mother was born in Massachusetts. In that census, he was a student of law living with his father and step-mother in Minneapolis. In the 1877 Minneapolis city directory, Cady Smith was a student residing at 91 S 7th (the home of his father). He and his brother Frank were surveyors for the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul railroad in 1881. In the 1883 Minneapolis city directory, Cady Smith, civil engineer, boarded at 114 N. 3rd. His father’s obit called him Cady Smith and said he was a farmer in the state of Washington. A death certificate for the state of Washington shows that he died in Spokane County on 10 Jul 1898. The cause of death was “alcoholic and morphine poisoning.” He was approximately 39 years old, was single, and died at what is presumed to be his residence at 1120 R R Avenue in Spokane. The certificate says that the father of “J. Cady Smith” was Judge Seagrave Smith and that Cady had been born in Minneapolis.
