Notes |
- Called Pearl A. in the 1900 census.
In the 1920 census, she was still living at home with her parents and younger brother in Western Twp, Otter Tail County. She was a public school teacher.
The Thursday, September 3, 1953, edition of the Fergus Falls Daily Journal notes that Mrs. Pearl Bye will be _the_ teacher for the rural school known as district 56 in Fergus Falls.
The November 28, 1953, edition of the FFDJ notes that the brother of Mrs. Eivind Bye, Leo W. Gardner, formerly of Fergus Falls, had died in Colorado on November 9th at the age of 46.
In the January 26, 1954, edition of the FFDJ, she, as Pearle E. Bye, is noted as having personal property worth $580 for the purposes of the school tax in the 3rd Ward of Fergus Falls. In that same edition, she is noted as having personal property worth $118 for the purposes of the school tax in the 4th Ward of Fergus Falls.
The February 3, 1954, edition of the FFDJ notes that “Mrs. Pearl Bye received a message Tuesday announcing the birth of a daughter, Betty Ann, to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Clavijo, ... New Orleans. Mrs. Clavijo will be remembered in Fergus Falls as Miss Bonnie Rae Lamport, who made her home with the Bye family for several years. She attended high school here and was employed at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in this city.”
According to the March 20, 1954, edition of the FFDJ, she was an applicant, and unsuccessful candidate, for the county’s superintendent of schools as determined at a special meeting of the county’s board of commissioners on March 19th.
In that same edition is the note that “Mrs. Pearl Bye received word that she is the grandmother of a girl born Friday, March 19, to her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Eivind C. Bye, Jr., in Mo-Kane, Mo. The baby has been named Beth Anne.”
She was a candidate for register of deeds, apparently a county position, according to the July 27, 1954, edition of the FFDJ. The August 27th edition of the FFDJ (p. 8) carried a campaign advertisement for her which included a picture. The ad says that she had lived in Fergus Falls since 1916, had married Eivind G. Bye in 1921, was widowed in 1950, and that her son Eivind Jr., and daughter Diane, had been born “here” and had lived in Otter Tail County “all their lives.” She claimed experience in business and accounting and had taught in rural schools of Otter Tail County for 20 years. She had served as District Manager of World Book Encyclopedia from 1947 to 1953. The ad also appeared in the September 3rd and 11th editions of the paper. And in the editions of the 11th and 13th she had an additional advertisement in the form of a letter. Her candidacy was unsuccessful.
She was a member of the Business and Professional Women club in Fergus Falls. She apparently had a business called Your Date Maternity Shop in Fergus Falls.
The September 24, 1955, edition of the FFDJ notes that “Mrs. Pearl Bye is up from New Brighton to spend the weekend at her home and with friends here. She teaches first grade in the Snail Lake School in New Brighton. Her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Machande (Diane Bye) live in Brooklyn Terrace where they have a new home. Mrs. Machande teaches in Robbinsdale which is about nine miles from New Brighton.”
