- Phyllis Hovie Weisnicht, 91, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away Monday, January 4, 2016, at the Arthur B. Hodges Center at the Edgewood Summit after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.
Phyllis was born June 21, 1924, in Lessor, Wisconsin. She met her husband, Lee Weisnicht, on a blind date when they were just 17. They were married in 1944 in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Lee was the love of her life for 67 wonderful years. Together they raised four children, and now have 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, never missing an important family event. Her strong faith and love of family were an inspiration to all who knew Phyllis.
An only child, Phyllis graduated from Washington High School in Two Rivers in 1942. She attended cosmetology school in Milwaukee.
She married Lee in 1944 and waited for him as he served his country during World War II as a U.S. Navy officer and captain of a patrol ship. After the war and Lee’s military service, Lee and Phyllis lived in Two Rivers while Lee worked for Hamilton Manufacturing. In 1968 they moved to Richmond, Virginia, where Lee had accepted a position at Royal School Furniture. He later joined Lea Industries as vice president of marketing and the couple moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1978. Phyllis ran the home front and raised the children while her husband had a highly successful career in the furniture industry. They retired in 1983 and Phyllis and Lee built a retirement home at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, where they enjoyed 25 years with family and friends.
Phyllis and Lee helped form the Trinity Ecumenical Parish at the lake where Episcopalians, Lutherans and Presbyterians all worship together.
Phyllis was an avid homemaker who created a loving and wonderful home for her family. A lover of books, cooking and all the things that make a home and nurture a family. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother devoted to her family and friends.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Lee Weisnicht and her parents, Clarence and Lena hovie. She is survived by her children, Bonita Bartsch, Barbara (Leslie) Prausa, William (Maria) Weisnicht and David (Catherine) Weisnicht.
Phyllis is survived by 11 grandchildren and spouses: Jonathan (Deanna) Bartsch, Heidi (Nick) Anastos, Richard Prausa, Thomas (Amy) Prausa, Susan (Hank) Long, Brian, Eleni and George Weisnicht and Gregg, James and Patricia Weisnicht; and by five great-grandchildren.
Her interment will be in Wisconsin this spring.
