- Jane Martin, 84, of Tinton Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014. Born in Chicago, IL on March 5, 1929, she attended Dixon Grammar School and Hirsch High School where she was a member of the Equestrian Group and was the news editor for their paper. Jane graduated from Monmouth College in Monmouth, IL in 1950 with concentrations in Biology and Chemistry. She was active in the Beta, Beta, Beta Honorary Biological Society. She represented the college at the 42nd annual meeting of the Illinois Academy of Science. Jane was the chairperson of the collegiate section. She won an award for her paper on "Hemogloben Deficiencies in College Women". She was an active member of her beloved Kappa Delta Sorority.
Her first position out of college was working at the University of Chicago, where she was a junior member testing chemotherapy under future Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, Dr. Charles Huggins.
In February 1952, she married Chester Garret Soerens, the love of her life. They moved to Alberquerque, NM, where she did labwork for the Lovelace Clinic. In 1953, she and Chester began working at Phillips Petroleum, she in plastic evaluation, and she proudly told her daughter "I made more money than Dad".
Jane and Chester moved to Colts Neck, NJ in 1968, where she was a homemaker and loving mother to her three children. When her children were older, she became a substitute teacher and private tutor in Monmouth County schools for many years.
Jane was an enthusiastic member of P.E.O (Philanthropic Educational Organization) since 1968. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is passionate about its mission: promoting educational opportunities for women. Jane hosted their meetings, worked fundraising and made her closest friends through this organization. She was also a 26 year member of the Lincroft Presbyterian Church.
Jane celebrated her 62nd anniversary with Chester just two days before she died. He joined his beloved Jane four days later on Feb. 22.
Jane was also predeceased by her parents, Josephine Swee Martin and Leon Stanbridge Martin of Chicago, IL. She is survived by her sons, Charles Garret Soerens, Monroe, NJ, and Peter Martin Soerens, Holmdel, NJ, daughter and son-in-law, Laura Soerens Dusek and James Edward Dusek, Fort Lauderdale, FL, her brother, Leon Stanbridge Martin Jr., Roselle, IL and her granddaughter, Allison Jane Dusek.
When asked to share her best advice for her cherished granddaughter Allison, she said: "Get a good education because no one can take it away from you.
