Notes |
- From his entry in Find A Grave, unknown contributor (“#47427057”):
Art Carlson bought 80 acres of rich Iowa farm land on August 28, 1948, from Gust Gustafson. The land was in Corinth Township in Humboldt County. Record of the land transfer can be found in the Recorder's Office at the Humboldt County Court House in Dakota City, Iowa, in Deed Record Book 130, p. 602. The legal Description of the land is; the West 1/2 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section 18, Township 91 North, Range 29 West of the 5th Principal Meridian. After Art's Death in December of 1968 the land had a change of title to his wife, Cora Bernice (Opheim) Carlson. The change of title is also on record at the Humboldt County Court House and took place on July 22, 1969. On March 2, 1977, Art Carlson's 80 acres was sold to longtime family friend Harold Nostrum. Record of the land transfer can be found at the Humboldt County Court House, Recorder's Office, Book 208, p. 520.
This 80 acres of farm ground was an adventure for me as a child growing up. Who could ever forget the cream separator in the garage. An actual cream separator working in the 1960's. Or the out house, a two-seater, south of the house. Or the corn crib with the inside elevator, with huge scoops on chains that carriage shelled grain to overhead holding bins. All of the old horse harnesses and reins and hand-operated shelling machines in the old machine shed fascinated me. I grew up on a farm, but not one like this. We had indoor plumbing! We didn't have a hand pump on the end of the kitchen counter. The small pump. A 14-inch high version of the 4-foot high ones out on the wells. And there was always chewing gum in grandpa's top dresser drawer in his bedroom right at the top of the stairs. And these people knew how to make music! Grandpa Art on the fiddle and his cousin Joe on the banjo. How can you take these fibery looking thin strings and make such beautiful, harmonic tones come from them And when brother-in-law Bernold Opheim was there, a guitar joined in. Man could they make those strings sing! Grandpa Art always seemed to be a very distant man to me. The drinking that went on in the house was totally foreign to me. My parents and the cousins we usually visited didn't have a drop in the house. But outside the house, the old-time farm was an exploration waiting to happen to me.
