- John Melvin Burke Loving husband, father and friend, passed away on November 17, 2009 at the age of 91.
Mel is survived by Muriel, his loving wife of 68 years; son Wayne (Wendy) their children, Darcie (Travis) Lozinski, great grandsons Riley and Tristan, and Colleen (Jason) Ackerman; daughter Shirley (Jim) Mould, their children Susan (Al) Beaudoin, great grandson Christopher Dickens; Steven (Gina) Mould, great granddaughter Naomi; and Carol-Lynne (Kim) Quintin, great grandson Morgan; brother Ken Burke and family; sisters-in-law Mary Kruger, Jean Copeland, and Chris Telfer, their families and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mel is predeceased by his parents, John and Hulda, sister Harriet Carson, and son-in-law Jim Mould.
Mel served Canada during WWII as an instructor in the Signal Corps based in Kingston, Ontario. Upon discharge from the Army he and Muriel moved to Regina where they raised their family, and Mel began his 39 year career with SaskTel. He was active with the Telephone Pioneers, serving a term as president. He was instrumental in bringing Microwave towers to Saskatchewan to facilitate better communication, and also bringing the Infant Hearing Assessment Program to the Regina General Hospital.
Mel and Muriel built their family cottage at Buena Vista Beach which was enjoyed by three generations and many friends. After Mel retired from SaskTel, the cottage became their summer home, and they were able to travel extensively across Canada and many other countries. Mel enjoyed sports all his life; tennis, hockey, baseball, and he curled into his 80's. He took an active interest in his children, grand children and great grandchildren with regard to their education, and activities.
