- Born and educated in Youngstown, Alberta, Canada. While serving in a tank regiment of the Calgary Regiment of the Canadian Army, he was wounded in action on June 30, 1944, as part of the invasion of Sicily. Survivors were his wife, parents, 3 sisters (Olga, Emily and Norma) and 4 brothers (Julius of the U.S. Army, Clarence with the Canadian Army, Alden, with the RCAF, and Lawrence of the RCAF).
