He was born on his grandfather's farm in Dodge County, Nebraska, on October 8, 1918. Captured by the Japanese when the Philippines fell, he was on the Baatan Death March and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner. He was initially held at Cabana Twan, Philippines, and later transferred to Japan by ship where he worked in the copper mines. James made the Army his career and retired in 1959 (?) with the rank of Major. He returned to Denver and worked for the Internal Revenue Service for a short time. He purchased a bankrupt store in Golden, Colorado, named Jefco Blueprinting, which he and his family built into a thriving business as the main source for college textbooks for the students of Colorado School of Mines.
