From Joyce Halver and Janet Stephenson on Find A Grave:
An Old Settler Departed.
Arne T. Boen of Pleasant Valley was laid to rest in the Bear Creek cemetery on Sunday the 22 of the present month. The Bear Creek church was filled with relatives, friends and neighbors of the deceased. Rev. Jahren preached the funeral sermon.
Mr. Boen was born in Reinlid, Valders, Norway Oct. 24, 1833, came to America in the year of 1862 and to the Norwegian Bear Creek settlement the following year 1863. From his first arrival to his death he lived in the neighborhood and vicinity of Grand Meadow. In the year 1866 he married Miss Sigrid Omot and the couple became the parents of quite a large number children, all died in infancy or in early age, only two survive. These are Theodore who with his family resides on the father's old homestead and Mrs. Anna Jacobson who at present with her family resides in the township of Frankford in this county. The above named son and daughter are parents of a large number of young children who all surrounded the coffin of the departed grandfather.
The personal character of Arne T. Boen was that of a kind, loving and peaceable man. He had a good common school education in the Norwegian language and being born of a worthy father and mother in a home with a fair supply of literary treasure he became early a lover of books and in diligent reading acquired a fair amount of historic education and general information.
From the early organization of the Bear Creek Lutheran church he was a constant and consistent member, served often as Sunday School teacher and teacher in the settlements parochial school in the Norwegian Language.
For many years in his latter life he was afflicted with deafness and this malady deprived the friendly and social man from mingling in social affairs and church meetings. The fatal illness that ended his life was repeated strokes of paralysis.
Our friend Boen is no more with us in person but his friendly countenance, his genial character and many words of cheer will always remain in the memory of all who knew him.
